<h1>Introduction to Python Scripting For DevOps</h1>
<p>In this post, we will walk through the basic concepts and environment setup that is required to learn python scripting.</p>
<h3>Prerequisites</h3>
<p>1. The first and foremost thing is python environment to run and test your scripts. You can download and install the latest version of python in your system from this link https://www.python.org/downloads/</p>
<p>2. Use Atom, Sublime or Visual studio code as a text editor. I would strongly suggest the open source visual studio code, as it is packed with good features for coding with an integrated terminal. Also, it supports auto completion, debugging and much more.</p>
<h2>Creating You First Python Script</h2>
<p>For most of the system administration tasks, you would create a bash script which runs in a shell. In the same way, you can create a python script that runs in a shell.</p>
<p>The first thing you are going to do is create a project folder named python and create the following two files with .sh and .py extensions.</p>
<p>Copy the following contents on the two files using your editor.</p>
<h3>Code Explanation</h3>
<p>1. In the above code, #!/usr/bin/env python3 represents the run-time environment for the program. Normally in bash scripts, you would have #! /bin/bash we are using python 3 (latest python) for our program. I would suggest you to go with python 3 and not python 2.</p>
<p>2. # My first python Script is just a comment. Every comment starts with #</p>
<p>3. print ("Hello Python User") is just a python print function which outputs ?hello python User?.</p>
<h3>Executing your first python Script</h3>
<p>We save our python script in .sh and .py format.</p>
<p>1. To run the .sh and .py scripts, first, change it to an executable format by executing the following commands in the terminal.</p>
<p>2. To execute the script, you can use any of the following commands.</p>
<p>All the above executions will display the same output. So script file extension and execution is your choice. But our recommendation is to stick with .py extension and develop your scripts using a good editor like VS code that supports python linting, debugging and autocompletion.</p>
<p>In this tutorial, you created your first python script and executed it. In the next tutorial, we will look into more python based concepts.</p>

<p>so, im having trouble with the subject with Sourcetree 3.0.1.</p>
<p>A few months ago, I cloned the project using a username&Token url.</p>
<p>As it seems the Token has expired and so i've created a new one and tried adding the account to sourcetree.</p>
<p>I'm typing in the username (tried primary and secondary) & token as described in my account in https://dev.azure.com.
<p>The only thing i'm baffled about is the host i should be using, tried:</p>
<p>We couldn't connect to Azure DevOps with your ('MyUserName') credentials. Check your username and try the password again.</p>
<p>What am i missing?</p>

<p>So.. adding an account didn't work for me, but i managed to solve the problem by changing the repository url to include the new token</p>
<p>Sourcetree -> repository -> repository settings -> remotes</p>

<p>I managed to get this sorted by doing the following.</p>
<p><OL>
<li>Create a PAT in azure devops (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ ... ure-devops)</li>
<li>Make sure you copy the generated PAT as you won't be able to view it again</li>
<li>On Source Tree, go to add account and select Azure DevOps</li>
<li>for host, I used https://<organisation>.visualstudio.com as the new url format for azure devops didn't work</li>
<li>enter username that you use</li>
<li>use the PAT you just generated for the password</li>
</OL>

<p>@Craig Haydon I managed to get it working using his/her instructions. Step 4 is the important one then it's just a matter of logging in.</p>

<p>I got this working via the following steps:</p>
<p><OL>
<li>Create a PAT in azure DevOps (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ ... ure-devops)</li>
<li>Make sure you copy the generated PAT as you won't be able to view it again</li>
<li>On Source Tree, go to add account and select Azure DevOps</li>
<li>for the host, I used https://<organisation>.visualstudio.com as the new URL format for azure DevOps didn't work</li>
<li>enter the generated PAT as username</li>
<li>use the PAT you just generated for the password as well</li>

<p>If somehow your Sourcetree doesn't seem to be using the right PAT credentials when you try to clone your repo, force Sourcetree to use the credentials by prefixing the URL with them:</p>
<p><OL>
<li>Get the URL from the Azure DevOps Repo, ie: https://<organisation>.visualstudio.com/<projectname>/_git/</li>
<li>Add the token as username and password in the URL of the repo, ie:<br />https://<token>:<token>@<organisation>.visualstudio.com/<projectname>/_git/</li>
</OL>
</p>
<p>Using these steps, SourceTree will force using the PAT as credentials for the repo and you can clone and work on the repo directly.</p>
<p>PS: Somehow, I couldn't get the username - PAT as a password combination working. I found out this route and it works for me.</p>
