<p>DevOps taking the center stage in the software industry, the job role ?DevOps Engineer? is buzzing around and today, I have some thoughts that can guide you to become a great DevOps engineer.</p>
<p><strong>What is a DevOps?</strong></p>
<p>The term Devops was coined as a combination of DEVelopers and OPerationS. According to Wikipedia:</p>
<p>DevOps is a term used to refer to a set of practices that emphasize the collaboration and communication of both software developers and information technology (IT) professionals while automating the process of software delivery and infrastructure changes. It aims at establishing a culture and environment where building, testing, and releasing software can happen rapidly, frequently, and more reliably.</p>
<p>Digital transformation is happening in every sector today and if you don?t adapt yourself to the changing technology advancements, your business is likely to die in the coming years. Automation being the key, every company nowadays wants to get rid of repetitive tasks and automate them as much as possible to increase the productivity. Here is where DevOps comes into the picture and however it is derived from the agile and lean tech aspects but still it?s new in the software industry today.</p>
<p>With the increasing usage of tools and platforms like Docker, AWS, Puppet, GitHub etc the companies can easily leverage automation and succeed their way.</p>
<p><strong>What is a DevOps Engineer?</strong> <br />A major part of adopting DevOps is to create a better working relationship between development and operations teams. Some suggestions to do this include setting the teams together, involving them in each other?s processes and workflows, and even creating one cross-functional team that does everything. In all these methods, Dev is still Dev and Ops is still Ops.</p>
<p>The term DevOps Engineer tries to blur this divide between Dev and Ops altogether and suggests that the best approach is to hire engineers who can be excellent coders as well as handle all the Ops functions. In short, a DevOps engineer can be a developer who can think with an Operations mindset and has the following skillset:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Familiarity and experience with a variety of Ops and Automation tools</li>
<li>Great at writing scripts</li>
<li>Comfortable with dealing with frequent testing and incremental releases</li>
<li>Understanding of Ops challenges and how they can be addressed during design and development</li>
<li>Soft skills for better collaboration across the team</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p><strong>How can you be a great DevOps Engineer?</strong></p>
<p>The key to being a great DevOps Engineer is to focus on the following:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Know the basic concepts on DevOps and get into the mindset of automating almost everything</li>
<li>Know about the different DevOps tools like AWS, GitHub, Puppet, Docker, Chef, New Relic, Ansible, Shippable, JIRA, Slack etc</li>
<li>Org-wide Ops mindset:</p></ul>
<p>There are many common Ops pitfalls that developers need to consider while designing software. Reminding developers of these during design and development will go a long way in avoiding these altogether rather than running into issues and then fixing them.</p>
<p>Try to standardize this process by creating a checklist that is part of a template for design reviews.</p>
<p>End to end collaboration and helping others solve the issues</p>
<p>You should be a scripting guru: Bash, Powershell, Perl, Ruby, JavaScript, Python ? you name it. They must be able to write code to automate repeatable processes.</p>
<p><strong>Factors to measure DevOps success</strong></p>

<p>Following my previous post about generating reports using Postman. Here I am again, writing about Postman and its amazing tips to help deliver working software more efficiently. <p>The biggest advantage of using the Postman API is the automatic synchronization of the Collections edited in the Postman GUI with the Postman Cloud (which is completely free). This avoids using Source Code Management tools (Git, SVN, etc.) to host your collections. Nevertheless, this is not the only option. You can also use the public shareable link of your Postman collection, but this may present a security issue in your organization.</p>
<p>Beside that, exporting a collection in JSON, pushing it to a repo and then retrieving it in your CI pipeline is a fastidious way of automating tests. Especially for a lazy QA engineer like me. Furthermore, at Younited Credit</strong> we believe that #FasterIsBetter</em></strong></p>
<h1>Retrieve your collection using the Postman API</h1>
<p>In order to be more efficient and benefit from the automatic synchronisation of the Postman collections, we are going to use the Postman API. First of all, go to the Postman API and click the ?Run in Postman? button:</p>

<p>Follow the instructions to import the Postman API collection in your Postman desktop client, then click on your profile to generate a Postman API key.</p>

<p>Then in the Postman Cloud GUI, click on the ?Account Settings? button:</p>

<p>Have you ever wanted to create some diagrams to explain the flow or sequence along with you documentation. You can use some tool like Microsoft Visio, export or screen grab the picture then paste it into the wiki. Then when it comes to updating it you have to try and find that Visio file make the change and repeat the export.</p>
<p>In the series of Diagrams in Azure DevOps Wiki I will be showing you how you can put diagrams along side you Wiki documentation. In this post we will be looking at the in built Mermaid Diagrams.</p>
<h2>Lets get Started</h2>
<p>Microsoft has added the capability to include Mermaid Diagrams into Azure DevOps. These Diagrams are explained using a the Mermaid syntax to explain different types of Diagrams. At the time of writing the diagrams supported include:</p>
<p>The actual wiki diagram syntax is in the same file as you wiki document. The syntax for the mermaid diagram is surrounded with the notation see below.</p>
<p>In the preview panel to the right of you text will display the below image. Clicking on Load diagram the mermaid syntax is used to generate the diagram.</p>

<h2>Mermaid Resources</h2>
<p>For more information about the Mermaid syntax look at https://mermaid-js.github.io/mermaid/#/ . Be aware not all syntax works for these three types at the moment.</p>
<h2>Editors for Mermaid</h2>
<p>If you are looking at ways to create the Mermaid diagram there is a live editor at https://mermaid-js.github.io/mermaid/#/ and if you like editing you Wiki in VSCode there is a extension to allow you to edit the Mermaid diagram in VSCode and preview the diagram you can find the extension at https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/it ... wn-mermaid .</p>
<p>Please be careful in using these other editors as some of the syntax that is supported by these editor may not be supported by Azure DevOps Mermaid Generator.</p>
<p>This is a good start, hopeful more diagram types will be added.</p>

<p>There are a couple of tools that help with TFs to VSTS migrations. Currently "the best" depending on your situation is the ability to import a TFS collection and create a VSTS account from it.</p>
<p>See also this other post which asks the same question for work items, the same set of tools tends to apply:</p>
<p>TFS to VSTS migration - The official import option which will import 1 project collection into 1 VSTS account. It automatically imports everything stored in the backup. At the point of writing this, the TFS must be upgraded to TFS 2018 and some work item template customizations must be removed (there are a few well documented features unavailable on VSTS).</p>
<p>Use the TFS Integration Tools - Will work for most TFVC situations, though it will lose data associated to your checkins (original checkin dat eand time are lost due to the way TFVC works, the data will be appended to the checkin comment.</p>

<li>Use a 3rd party solution - Out of the available options currently OpsHub offers the most complete solution. For test case and source control link migration you're looking at the commercial edition, which comes at a steep price. It still has a long list of known issues and last time I tried it, I ran into numerous issues which required their support to resolve them. If you're only after source control history, then Timely Migrations is also worth looking at.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>There are specialized TFS consultants who live off these kinds of migrations if your current state of the work items is precious to you, then you could reach out to them.</p>
