<h1>Using Visual Studio Code with Azure DevOps</h1>
<p>In this article I want to give a quick overview about the integration of Visual Studio Code and Git with Azure DevOps on my Windows 10 machine.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps ? formerly VSTS ? is the version of Team Foundation Server hosted on Microsoft Azure. Azure DevOps includes Azure Pipelines, Azure Boards, Azure Artifacts, Azure Repos and Azure Test Plans.</p>
<p>To gain first experiences with Azure RM Scripting, automated deployment and code repositories I looked at Visual Studio Code (VSCode). This is a free source code editor from Microsoft. With Azure Repos you get free private Git repositories and will be able to do code collaboration in the cloud.</p>
<h3>Setup Visual Studio Code & Git</h3>
<p>First download the latest version of Visual Studio Code from https://code.visualstudio.com/ and install it. Start the application and install the extension: Azure Repos</p>
<p>The next step is to download the latest version of Git from https://git-scm.com/download . Choose all the defaults except change VS Code to the default editor. That?s optional but I did it.</p>
<p>If you haven?t created an Azure DevOps project yet, you should do so now. You have as well a new created repository. Navigate in your browser to Azure Repos.</p>
<p>I have created a folder to synchronize the repository to the local harddisk.</p>
<p>In the File-Explorer there is now the option ?Git Bash Here? with right click available. The following window appears in which you initialize Git with the command ?git init?.</p>
<p>This command creates a subdirectory .git, which contains all relevant Git Repository data, i.e. a Git Repository framework.</p>
<h3>Clone Git Repository from Azure DevOps</h3>
<p>The next step is to clone the git repository from Azure DevOps to the local disk.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Update: this Bug has been resolved!</em><br />Note</strong>: In Azure DevOps there is a button that you can press to synchronize. It doesn?t work if the URL contains spaces because of a bug. For this reason, I executed the clone command via the Git Bash. Therefore, replace the ?blanks? with %20 and it will work.</p></blockquote>

<p>The next command is only needed if the repository is completely empty. It will create a completely new history of the project. If you do not execute this command, Git will not work in VSCode.</p>

<p>If you are now starting Visual Studio Code you need to click ?Add Workspace folder?? on the welcome screen and choose the Git Folder on your harddrive. This will look like this. As you can see, I have already created a folder and a new PowerShell file.</p>
<h3>Signin to Azure DevOps-Team</h3>
<p>To collaborate with your team in Azure DevOps you need to sign-in first. For doing this click on ?View? in the navigation pane and choose ?Command Palette? or press ?CTRL+SHIFT+P?. In the command window enter ?Team: Signin? and choose your authentication method. I prefer the ?new experience?.</p>

<p><strong>For many organisations mainframe still drives essential back end processes with a plethora of other technology driving what might be termed ?front of organisation? processes and procedures.</strong></p>
<p>Mainframe is at the heart of many organisations and is essential for ensuring an effective front-end service layer. However, the entire service layer, and the batch systems, need to be managed in a more agile way.</p>
<p>Although software on the mainframe has some level of automated promotions and releases, most of the tools work in an autonomous way and are not integrated with each other. Consequently, this leaves many areas requiring manual processes with the potential of lengthy release processes and lengthy and expensive quality assurance processes.</p>
<p>Currently, teams are working in a serial conventional way to release software. For example, testing focusing on defects rather than quality and process enhancement. Consequently, the situation is further complicated by a Governance Layer that has the effect of making the whole process more cumbersome, inefficient and slower.</p>
<h4>The Mainframe Ecosystem</h4>
<p>Whilst other platforms, such as mobile cloud and distributed, embraced DevOps to innovate and bring changes to market more quickly, DevOps is still relatively new in the mainframe ecosystem. Traditionally, mainframes have limited release cycles, limited automation capabilities, and limits on build and deployment. Organisation are used to a few releases per year</p>
<p>and to extract low value from their release cycle. Put simply, enterprises choose mainframe because of its high availability, scalability and security rather than a quick route to market. Bringing agile practices into mainframe can address this and subsequently unlock tremendous value to enterprises. The first stage may involve setting targets for monthly releases to gradually introduce DevOps principles to a mainframe environment.</p>

<p>I've been using Visual Studio Team Foundation for the past 6 months now. I've banged my head against the wall ( a lot actually ) but I'm finally getting to a point where I feel that I'm in charge of it instead of the other way around. One thing that I really like about TFS is the Team Build product. Team Build is an agent that you install on your build box. It gives you the ability to kick off builds remotely.</p>
<p>For example, I'm able to open up VS2005 Team Explorer and go to Team Builds. I'm then shown a list of known build types in which I can bring up all kinds of information about previous builds and/or kick off a new build. Once I tell TFS to initiate a build of a build type, it sends the job over to Team Build and the process runs from there. All of this occurs without me needing to logon to the actual build machine. I don't know about you, but I think this rocks.</p>
<p>So what is a team build type? In TFS Source Control there is a special root level project called TeamBuildTypes. Each sub project represents a build type. TFS Build Types are pretty much solution centric. It's MSBuild based so really you could do whatever you want, but if you want to conform to the pattern think solutions.</p>
<p>The TeamBuildType consists of three files:</p>
<p>TFSBuild.proj -- An MSBuild project file that contains the built-in logic to use TFS to build a .NET solution.</p>
<p>TFSBuild.rsp -- a response file used to pass properties to MSBuild when firing up the build.</p>
<p>WorkspaceMappings.xml -- A simple XML file that maps your project area in TFS Source Control to your project directory on the build machine. This makes tasks such as keeping track of what changesets went into a build, labeling the files and getting them for compiling a piece of cake!</p>
<p>So after you install all the pieces of TFS and check a VS2005 .NET solution into source control, you can run the wizard and create your first TeamBuildType. With a couple more clicks you'll have TeamBuild building your first build.</p>

<p>In this post, we?ll look at the official integration between Azure DevOps and Atlassian?s Jira software.</p>
<p>Love it or hate it, Jira is among other things one of the most widely used issue tracking tools, and in July 2019 Microsoft rolled out a new Jira app that can be used to sync issues between DevOps and Jira, enabling end to end traceability between both platforms from when an issue is reported to when a deployment is released fixing it.</p>
<p>There are a number of limitations. At present, the official plugin doesn?t support DevOps repositories. Only GitHub repositories are supported, although Azure Repos support is planned soon. Build information also isn?t available ? the app will only show deployments made in the Jira issue.</p>
<p>The integration also doesn?t change much from DevOps ? there?s no UI integrating with Jira reporting or issues, and you can?t easily view a summary of Jira cards from pull requests commit messages.</p>
<p>That said, to get started, you?ll need to:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Be a Jira administrator, or have the ability to request a Jira app be installed within your organisation?s Jira installation</li>
<li>Use Jira Cloud ? on-premise installations aren?t supported</li>
<li>Use GitHub for your source code</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>It?s also worth noting that for now this app only supports showing deployment traceability in Jira ? other information such as build numbers or tasks will not show.</p>
<h2>Getting started</h2>
<p>First you?ll need to install the Azure Pipelines for Jira application, available for free in the Atlassian marketplace.</p>
<p>Then, once you?ve installed the app you?ll be prompted to add your DevOps organisation. Click ?Add organisation?, and you?ll be prompted to enter your credentials. It should then list all your organisations in a table view.</p>
<h2>Enabling support in DevOps</h2>
<p>Now we need to add the Jira integration to our DevOps release pipeline. Open the DevOps portal, and navigate to your project and release pipeline.</p>
<p>Click ?Edit? on the release pipeline you?d like to integrate Jira with, and then click ?Options?. Click ?Integrations? and you?ll see the option to ?Report deployment status to Jira?.</p>
<p>Check the box, and you should see your Jira software cloud account listed from the previous step. If you don?t see it, check your Jira account to make sure you?ve added the organisation successfully in the DevOps app.</p>
<p>You?ll also see the ability to map your stages to a set list of deployment types. These deployment types are set by Microsoft, and you?ll have to pick from the list and match them as best you can to your stages. At present, there are 5 deployment types:</p>
<p>These deployment types then show in your Jira cards as commits which contain your story numbers move through your deployment process.</p>
<h2>Referencing Jira issues</h2>
<p>The app works by searching your commit history (both commit and pull request messages) for Jira issue keys. If you?re not sure about how to find an issue key see this article on Atlassian?s website.</p>
<p>To enable the linking, once you?ve followed the above steps simply add the issue number into your commit messages when you write them. We tend to stick to the format ?[ISSUE-KEY] Fixed an issue with something? as the short message title, but the exact format is up to you.</p>
<p>The app then searches your commit history and will automatically update the issue when you create and deploy a release in your pipelines. It?s that simple.</p>
