<h1>Creating a Dev Environment on AWS</h1>
<p>BOSH Lite is designed to provide a local development environment for BOSH and by extension Cloud Foundry. Though BOSH Lite can be run locally via Virtualbox, this guide is primarily concerned with bringing up a single-instance environment on Amazon EC2.</p>
<h3>Prerequisites:</h3>
<h5>Vagrant</h5>
<p>The bosh-lite repo provides a Vagrantfile and box for quickly standing up a bosh lite director on AWS.</p>
<h5>AWS CLI</h5>
<p>(Amazon Web Services Command Line Interface)</p>
<p>While not strictly necessary, but this guide assumes a recent version it. Install or update it with:</p>
<p>Needed to clone the bosh-lite repo.</p>
<h5>Cloud Foundry CLI</h5>
<p>The cf command is our gateway to the Cloud Foundry environment, it handles everything from the creation of users and organizations to pushing and scaling applications.</p>
<h5>Bosh IAM User</h5>
<p>You?ll need a recent version of the AWS CLI for some of these commands. The current release is 1.7.12 as of this writing. Earlier versions may not have all the required commands.</p>
<p>Create the bosh user.</p>
<p>Apply a policy that will allow bosh to perform actions in the AWS environment.</p>
<p>Create the bosh keypair.</p>
<p>Create the bosh access key and secret key.</p>
<p>Export the required environment variables using key file and credentials create above.</p>
<p>This is the path to the private portion of the bosh keypair (bosh.pem).</p>
<p>This is AWS access key to be used by bosh.</p>
<p>This is AWS secret key to be used by bosh.</p>
<h5>Bosh EC2 Security Group</h5>
<p>A EC2 security group which allows SSH and HTTP/S into your AWS environment:</p>
<p>Again the AWS CLI is nice to have here.</p>
<p>Create the security group. By default, the bosh-lite Vagrantfile expects this security group to be named inception. You can call it something else, but you?ll need to make the new name available to vagrant with export BOSH_LITE_SECURITY_GROUP=NEW-SECURITY-GROUP-NAME .</p>
<p>Add your own public IP at minimum.</p>
<p>With the prerequisites out of the way, we can use Vagrant to deploy the instance which will run the BOSH Lite directory and wardenized Cloud Foundry services.</p>
<h3>Procedure:</h3>
<h5>Prepare Vagrant</h5>
<p>Grab the bosh-lite repo.</p>
<p>Add the bosh-lite vagrant box.</p>
<h5>Launch Vagrant</h5>
<p>Bring the vagrant machine up.</p>
<p>The initial vagrant up includes provisioning scripts which set up port forwarding rules via iptables to expose Cloud Foundry service VMs running as warden containers on the instance. If the machine is restarted or halted for any reason we?ll need to follow the steps in reprovisioning below.</p>
<p>Grab the public IP of the resulting instance and keep it handy. We?ll need it later in the deployment and when accessing the resulting environment with the Cloud Foundry CLI.</p>
<h5>Finish Building the EC2 Instance:</h5>
<p>Connect to the AWS instance via SSH.</p>
<p>There are a few utilities that we?ll need to configure the Cloud Foundry environment which aren?t included with the BOSH Lite public AMI.</p>
<p>Add the spiff utility.</p>
<p>Create a workspace directory.</p>
<p>Target the local bosh director.</p>
<p>Clone the bosh bosh-lite repo.</p>
<h5>Configure Cloud Foundry:</h5>
<p>Update the deployment stub to reflect the public IP of your instance as recorded above by adding a domain: key to the properties section of manifests/cf-stubb-spiff.yml . The resulting file should look something like this:</p>
<p>Ensure the Cloud Foundry services will be able to access each other via the external address.</p>
<h5>Provision Cloud Foundry:</h5>
<p>Run the automated provisioning script.</p>
<p>This script automates the process of:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Recursively cloning the cf-release repository.</li>
<li>Uploading the latest release to the director.</li>
<li>Uploading a public stemcell to the director.</li>
<li>Generating a deployment manifest from the included templates.</li>
<li>Deploying the generated manifest to a set of warden containers inside the instance.</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p>This process takes quite a while, up to an hour on the default m3.xlarge instance type.</p>
<p>When complete, use bosh vms to have a look at the resulting environment.</p>
<p>We?re done provisioning, now we?ll disconnect and access the environment via the Cloud Foundry CLI.</p>
<h5>Reprovisioning:</h5>
<p>If the Vagrant machine is halted or restarted for any reason there are several steps we?ll need to take to recreate the environment.</p>
<p>1.) Recreate forwarding rules.</p>
<p>2.) Repair the VMs.</p>
<p>Choose option 2 ?Recreate VM using last known apply spec? for each VM then confirm the choices. A new director task will be created to recreate each VM in turn. This will take several minutes to complete.</p>
<p>3.) If necessary, re-deploy using the new public IP address.</p>
<p>Update manifests/cf-stub-spiff.yml to reflect the new public IP address, then run:</p>
<p>If the machine will be regularly restarted, consider associating an elastic IP to avoid having to repeat the third step above.</p>

<h1>How to create an IT Org Chart for Modern DevOps </h1>
<p>Time is running out to make an IT organizational structure that can meet the constant ?ideate-build-run? iterations of modern development operations (DevOps).</p>
<p>That?s a mouthful of a sentence, so let me break it down. First up, let?s tackle who is advocating this. Sriram Narayan is an IT Management Consultant at ThoughtWorks who wrote the book on Agile IT Org Design. Recently, Sriram made some slides explaining why it is so important for DevOps to get a new org chart.</p>
<h3>Ideate-Build-Run DevOps</h3>
<p>Think of DevOps like a city. The person who designs a new road doesn?t build it. And the person who builds the new road doesn?t fill in potholes. That?s what traditional DevOps is like. The problem with this traditional approach is a lack of quality. The designer doesn?t feel the pain of having to maintain what was designed, so designs don?t get better.</p>
<p>Instead, with DevOps, the team who comes up with an idea for an improved software should also build the software and run the software. That?s what Sriram means by ?Ideate-Build-Run?.</p>
<p>This goes against more traditional business approaches where specialization is all important. But if specialization doesn?t always lead to better quality products, then it is important to rethink how things get built.</p>
<p>The benefit is that the process is a virtuous loop. The pain of running something gives builders better ideas on how to avoid the pain.</p>
<h3>A new normal for DevOps teams</h3>
<p>Sriram visualized a four tier concept for structuring DevOps teams. The idea is that each tier of teams has a constant ?Ideate-Build-Run? process for their area of DevOps.</p>

<h3>Time is running out</h3>
<p>If you buy in to the idea of Ideate-Build-Run DevOps, then the next questions is ?Why now??.</p>
<p>Every thing is becoming digital. Companies like Amazon would be expected to push the envelope through experimentation. But more traditional companies like Banks usually wait for stacks of best-practice case studies before changing they way they do things. There is not time for this anymore because Banks are digital businesses too, and have to act quickly like the best digital businesses.</p>
<p>In order to implement these core ideas, it?s important to have an org chart software that can easily manage different scenarios and quick changes.</p>

<p>This extension includes a build/release task to integrate with Ansible. The task executes a given Ansible playbook on a specified list of inventory nodes via command line interface. Ansible is an open-source IT automation engine that can configure systems, deploy software and orchestrate application deployments. Ansible uses Playbooks which express configurations, deployment, and orchestration steps in YAML format. Each Playbook maps a group of hosts to a set of roles. Each role is represented by calls to Ansible tasks. Inventory file is a description of the nodes that can be accessed by Ansible.</p>
<p>This task requires that the Playbook and Inventory files be located either on a private Linux agent or on a remote machine where Ansible automation engine has been installed. Additionally Inventory can also be specified inline or as a Host list.</p>
<h2>Prerequisites</h2>
<h3>Install Ansible automation engine</h3>
<p>Follow the installation guidance to install Ansible on a private Linux agent or on a remote machine. Currently Ansible can be run from any machine with Python 2.6 or 2.7 installed (Windows isn?t supported for the control machine).</p>
<h3>Create an SSH endpoint</h3>
<p>If Ansible is installed on a remote machine, you would need to set up an SSH endpoint in the administration section of your VSTS project.</p>
<p><ul>
<li>The hostname or IP address of the remote machine, the port number, and the user name are required</li>
<li>The private key and the passphrase must be specified for authentication.</li>
<li>A password can be used to authenticate to remote Linux machines, but this is not supported for Mac or OSX systems.</li>
<li>The public key must be pre-installed or copied to the remote machine.</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>SSH endpoint</strong>*: Name of the SSH service endpoint containing connection details for the remote machine where Ansible automation engine has been installed.</p>
<p><strong>Playbook Source</strong>: Choose agent machine if playbook is part of a linked artifact and should be copied to the remote Ansible machine. Otherwise, select Ansible machine.</p>
<p><strong>Playbook root</strong>*: Specify the working directory path where playbook and associated files are located on the agent machine. All the files in this folder will be copied to Ansible machine.</p>
<p><strong>Playbook file path</strong>*: Specify the path to the playbook file to be executed on the Ansible machine. Playbooks declare Ansible?s configuration, deployment, and orchestration steps in YAML format.</p>
<p><strong>Inventory location</strong>: By default, Ansible Inventory is described by a configuration file, in INI format, whose default location is in /etc/ansible/hosts. Inventory can also be specified as a separate configuration file which lists either the IP address or hostname of each node that is accessible by Ansible. Or can be specified as a Host list of comma separated hosts. Example - foo.example.com, bar.example.com.</p>
<p>Alternatively Inventory can be specified inline.</p>
<p><strong>Inventory file path</strong>*: Specify the path to inventory host file on Ansible/Agent machine</p>
<p><strong>Dynamic Inventory</strong>: Ansible can also use a custom Dynamic Inventory script, which can dynamically pull data from a different system. Check this box if dynamic inventory is used.</p>
<p><strong>Advanced - Sudo</strong>: Run operations with sudo. It works only when the Ansible user is sudoer with nopasswd option. This also requires desired sudo user name. "root" is used when this field is empty.</p>
<p><strong>Additional arguments</strong>: The arguments to pass to Ansible command line. Refer to documentation on Ansible Commands Modules and Ad-Hoc Commands</p>
<p><strong>Advanced - Fail on STDERR</strong>: If this option is selected (the default), the build will fail if the remote commands or script write to STDERR.</p>

<h3>In this tutorial, we look at how to get a Node.js app up and running and then deploy it to an instance of Azure DevOps.</h3>

<p>This post is as an introduction to Azure DevOps. If you're new to this topic, check out a helpful DZone article here.</p>
<p>We'll use an <strong>azure-pipelines.yml</strong> file at the root of the repository. Get this file to build the Node.js application using CI (Continuous Integration) Build.</p>
<p>Follow the instructions in <strong>Create your build pipeline</strong> to create a build pipeline for your node application.</p>
<p><strong>Steps:</strong></p>
<p>The agent pool needs to be selected on <strong>Microsoft-hosted agents</strong>. This is the VM where the build runs. If the hosted agent is not working, use the self-hosted agent machine as a host.</p>
<p>Publish the test results to Azure pipelines or TFS when tests are executed to provide complete test reports and analytics. Use the test runner that supports the required test results format. Some specific result formats include JUnit, NUnit, and Visual Studio Test (TRX). This task will generate the JUnit XML formats, and Azure DevOps Build will use this XML file in its build task to grab the test results and publish to the dashboard summary of the build.</p>

<li>Select the Azure Resource Manager subscription for the deployment.</li>
<li>To configure a new service connection, select the Azure subscription from the list and click '<strong>Authorize</strong>.'</li>
<li>Use the existing service principal, or if the subscription is not listed, set up an Azure service connection.</li>
<li>Set the type as function app on windows, then choose the web app's name that you created in the azure-portal.</li>
<li>In a release (CD) pipeline, artifacts are used as an input for Continuous Integration (CI) build code (Node.js) by using a package or a folder containing the app service's contents that were generated via a compressed zip or war file.</li>
