<p>Back in the late 1980s, the UK government?s Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) developed a set of recommendations to govern the way private and public sector organizations manage IT with a set of standard practices. As computing took on greater importance and a greater role in everyday business, government agencies and private sector companies alike began creating their IT management practices resulting in a hodgepodge of methodologies that often created more problems than they solved.</p>
<p>And thus, ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) was born. The framework describes a range of processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists applicable to virtually any organization with IT assets. At the time it was a necessary, if not inventive, step in aligning IT operations and establishing best practices across a burgeoning industry. It was a blanket solution to a widespread (and growing) challenge for organizations around the globe.</p>
<p>But like other popular trends of the time ? CD-ROMs, large desktop computers, and brick-sized cellular phones ? ITIL now appears to be an artifact of a bygone era when viewed through the lens of today?s IT operations/service management (ITOM/ITSM).</p>
<p>It begs a simple question: is ITIL still relevant in the era of DevOps and hybrid cloud?</p>
<p><b>Even with updates, ITIL is outdated</b></p>
<p>Over the last few decades, ITIL has played a pivotal role in shaping how the industry views IT operations. It?s created a widespread workload-first philosophy ? sequential, plan-oriented, and predicated on setting up devices to handle specific workloads first and worrying about maintenance later.</p>
<p>The premise is that technology work can be segmented, as you?d find in a factory, and that aligning infrastructure around key workloads will simplify operations and result in greater efficiency. That is, the initial and continued emphasis on managing IT infrastructure is misaligned with modern enterprises? goal of better managing services and the customer experience.</p>
<p>IT?s shift toward DevOps has flipped the script on how organizations plan and manage work in the digital era and presents an existential challenge to the legacy ITIL framework. Organizations are increasingly adopting agile development over conventional ITIL-derived waterfall methodologies, replacing a test-at-the-end approach with more iterative continuous integration frameworks.</p>
<p>The continuous ? and dynamic ? relationship between development and operations teams lays in direct conflict with ITIL?s sequential nature. Even with its most recent updates (26 processes and four core functions), ITIL?s approach still encourages operational and data silos and ignores IT?s general shift toward more service-centric operations.</p>
<p><b>Three critical areas where ITIL falls short</b> </p>
<p>Today?s enterprise IT is software-defined and service-oriented. It?s private, public, hybrid, and multi-cloud. It?s virtualized, containerized, and increasingly automated. It?s fundamentally and markedly different from how things were even five years ago. So why should organizations rely on management methodologies developed well before the industry?s maturation and evolution?</p>
<p>For all the good it?s done for the industry in the past, ITIL fails to sufficiently meet the demands of modern IT teams in three key areas:</p>
<p><ol>
<li><b>The shift to a service orientation</b>. IT?s evolving focus on the customer experience means it must dedicate more time and resources to application development and maintenance. ITIL-derived IT operations focus on component monitoring, while in the DevOps era they should emphasize service-level management.</li>
<li><b>The transition to DevOps and continuous deployments.</b> Customers want what they want, and they want it now. Sequential software development lifecycles (Waterfall) focusing on step-by-step design, testing, and maintenance actions don?t offer the speed, agility, or adaptability to deliver products and services to market, creating a massive competitive disadvantage for old-school dev shops.</li>
<li><b>The rise of enterprise complexity</b>. IT as a whole has radically transformed in the last few years. The introduction of microservices, containerization, cloud-native workloads and serverless computing all are more complicated than the old ITIL methods were built to tolerate.</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p><b>So what?s the new model?</b></p>
<p>In ITIL?s heyday, its biggest benefit was protection against failure due to organizational change. Change controls protected vital IT infrastructure against misconfigurations or other lapses that led to system downtime, the most important performance metric for a supporting-role IT team.</p>
<p>But today?s IT doesn?t just play a supporting role. It?s an active, willing contributor to organizational success; the driving force behind the modern enterprise. Today?s ITOps must be agile, efficient, and flexible enough to service not just planned workloads, but also modern IT environments built on a model that supports continuous change, automated deployments, and interchangeable components.</p>
<p>Forward-thinking IT organizations have realized that empowering service and line-of-business owners with a management model aimed at maintaining websites, apps, portals, and other customer touchpoints first is the real key to gaining a strategic edge.</p>
<p>The IT world is markedly different from what it was the last several decades. The emergence and proliferation of cloud-based technologies has introduced a slew of challenges around managing and securing more endpoints, devices, and services that ITIL framework developers couldn?t possibly have envisioned. As such, it?s time for IT leaders to reconsider their support models, adopt more contemporary, service-centric operations, and leave ITIL in the past where it belongs.</p>

<h1>VSTS, TFS, and? Git?</h1>
<p>With Microsoft?s recent acquisition of GitHub, Git is top-of-mind. Git is a free and open-source distributed version control system. This system has a very different workflow than TFVC, or Team Foundation Version Control, a centralized version control. Git is becoming increasingly popular. Microsoft?s Docs state that you should use Git unless you have a specific reason for using a centralized version control instead. Within Microsoft, the VSTS/TFS teams and Windows team have moved entirely to Git. Why would someone choose to make the switch from centralized version control to distributed?</p>
<h2>Branching</h2>
<p>One of the biggest advantages of Git is its branching ability. With centralized version control, branches are expensive and merging is no picnic. With Git, it is the opposite. So, one is able to create a branch for each new code change, thereby ensuring the master branch is always production quality.</p>

<h2>Distributed Development</h2>
<p>Microsoft?s VSTS/TFS teams are spread all over the globe. The distributed nature of Git allows the team to scale with ease. With centralized version controls, a developer works from their own repo copy that points back at a single central repository. With Git, however, each developer has their own local repository. This repository houses a full history, which allows for commits, inspections, and diffs without a network connection. Like feature branches, distributed development makes for a more reliable experience.</p>
<p>Git is also the default version control for all new projects in TFS and VSTS, but TFVC is still supported (and will continue to be, until stated otherwise). Furthermore, builds with Git have additional functionality that is not available in TFVC, such as using the same build definition for all branches.</p>

<h1>Running .NET Core Unit Tests with Docker and Azure Pipelines</h1>
<p>Using Docker for compiling your code is great since that guarantees a consistent behaviour regardless of where you are building your code. No matter if it?s on the local dev machine or on a build server somewhere. It also reduces the need of installing any dependencies just to make the code compile. The only thing that you need to install is Docker!</p>
<p>When you create a ASP.NET Core project in Visual Studio and add Docker support for it you will get a Docker file that looks something like this:</p>
<p>This is an example of a multistage Docker build. The first stage is based on the .NET Core SDK Docker image in which the code is restored, built and published. The second phase uses the smaller .NET Core runtime Docker image, to which the generated artifacts from the first phase is copied into.</p>
<p>The result is a smaller Docker image that will be pushed to a Docker registry and later on deployed to test- and production environments. Smaller images means faster download and startup times. Since it doesn?t contain as many SDKs etc, it also means that the surface area for security holes is much smaller.</p>
<p>Now, this will compile just fine locally, and settting a build definition in Azure Pipelines is easy-peasy. Using the default <strong><em>Docker container</em></strong> build pipeline template, results in a build like this:</p>

<p>But, we want to run unit tests also, and then publish the test results back to Azure DevOps. How can we do this?</p>
<h2>Run Unit Tests in Docker</h2>
<p>First of all we need to build and run the tests inside the container, so we need to extend the Docker file. In this sample, I have added a XUnit test project called <strong><em>WebApplication1.UnitTests</em></strong>.</p>
<p>Now we are also restoring and compiling the test project, and then we run <em><strong>dotnet test</strong></em> to run the unit tests. To be able to publish the unit test results to Azure DevOps, we are using the <em>?logger</em> parameter which instructs dotnet to output a TRX file.</p>
<p>Now comes the tricky part. When we run these tests as part of a build, the results end up inside the container. To publish the test results we need to access the results from outside the container. Docker volumes will not help us here, since we aren?t running the container, we are building it. Docker volumes are not supported when building a container.</p>
<p>Instead we will add another task to our build definition that will use scripts to build the image, including running the unit tests, and the copiying the test results file from the container to a folder on the build server. We use the Docker Copy command to do this:</p>
<p>Here we first build the image by using <em>docker build</em>. By using the <em>?target</em> parameter it will only execute the first phase of the build (there is no meaning to continue if the tests are failing). To access the file inside the container, we use <em>docker create</em> which is a way to create and configure a container before actually starting it. In this case we don?t need to start it, just use <strong><em>docker cp</em> </strong>to extract the test result files to the host.</p>
<p>Now we will have the TRX test results file in the artifact folder on the build server, which means we can just add a <strong><em>Publish Test Results</em></strong> task to our build definition:</p>

<p>In this story, we will learn how to use a Personal Access Token (PAT)</strong> to download a file from private repo located on Azure DevOps.</strong></p>
<h1>Creating a Personal Access Token (PAT)</strong></h1>
<p>The first step is to create a PAT.</p>
<p>Login into Azure DevOps</strong> and click on the User Settings</strong> menu located on the top right. Then click on the Personal access tokens</strong> menu.</p>
