Connect any version of Visual Studio to Azure DevOps or Azure DevOps Server

Visual Studio has been around for a long time and there are still people developing in Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 2008. Even if you're using a more recent IDE, you could need one or more hotfixes and/or service packs.

Azure DevOps. Formerly Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS), Visual Studio Online (VSO) and Team Foundation Service. Azure DevOps Server. Formerly Team Foundation Server.

Visual Studio has been around for a long time and there are still people developing in Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 2008. I sincerely hope these people store their sources securely, because these old IDEs and codebases will be causing them enough headaches. Even if you're using a more recent IDE, you could need one or more hotfixes and/or service packs.

To connect your IDE to Azure DevOps you usually need to make sure you have Team Explorer or an extension to your IDE installed. Team Explorer ships with Visual Studio in recent versions, but in older versions it was a separate installation.

The following variables make up what you need to install in order to be able to connect:

Your IDE and version

Your operating system and version

Whether connecting to Azure DevOps or TFS (and which version)

Note that for many of the items listed below, the order of installation is important. If you've previously installed any of the packages you'll need to uninstall them first or repair all packages in the order listed.

Microsoft has an official Client Compatiblity matrix. In addition to it, this post also lists the required hotfixes to make everything work.

Jira tfs integration

[youtube]

Jira tfs integration Today's national news Jira tfs integration

Jira Integration with Azure DevOps Server (TFS)

Jira and Azure DevOps Server (TFS) Integration Overview

In an Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) environment, the choice of systems, and the collaboration between the cross-functional teams play a great role in delivering quality solutions. While the choice of systems impacts the productivity of a team, the cross-functional collaboration helps the teams get complete context of the business requirements.

Best-of-breed systems such as Jira and Azure DevOps Server (TFS) bring rich functionalities to the ecosystem. By integrating Azure DevOps Server (TFS) with Jira, enterprises can seamlessly manage product development. The developers using Jira will have clear visibility into the exact feature requirements and real-time access to any changes/enhancements made to the requirements. On the other hand, Azure DevOps Server (TFS) users will have a complete view of how development of a requirement is progressing.

How Jira and Azure DevOps Server (TFS) integration is beneficial for an enterprise

Access to all test cases, defects, and QA plan

Trace the requirement breakdown completely ? access the features, stories, tasks associated with the requirement

Developers are always up-to-date on feature requirements and associated updates

Track the estimated and actual development efforts

Get complete context of the business requirement and receive real-time updates when there is a change in the plan

Coordinate on the delivery timelines seamlessly with concurrent updates on changes

With Jira and Azure DevOps Server (TFS) integration, enterprises can:

How OpsHub Integration Manager integrates Jira and Azure DevOps Server (TFS)

OpsHub Integration Manager integrates Azure DevOps Server (TFS) and Jira bidirectionally. It ensures that all historical and current data is available to each user, in that user?s preferred system, with full context, in real-time. All ?requirements? from Azure DevOps Server (TFS) automatically synchronize to Jira where they are broken down to ?stories?. The completion of the story and the status of test results against it automatically synchronizes to Azure DevOps Server (TFS).

Popularly synchronized entities

Azure devops queries - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Azure devops queries

[youtube]

Azure devops queries National news stories Azure devops queries

Scheduled Work Item Query

Quadrotech Solutions AG

Azure DevOps Schedule Work Item Query

Introduction

The Goal of this extension was to keep as much functionality as possible inside Azure DevOps / Team Foundation Server. We have opted to realize this by using a standard Build Pipeline in Azure DevOps / Team Foundation Server as our "Scheduling" Engine.

The actual functionality is realized as a Build Pipeline Task called "Scheduled Work Item Query". This task executes a query that is saved in either the "My Queries" or "Shared Queries" folders, and sends the results by e-mail using either SendGrid or standard SMTP.

Setup

Introduction

Setup of the Task should be straight forward. You should probably create a new Build Pipeline, and then add as many "Scheduled Work Item Query" Tasks as needed. Each Task is able to send a single Query to multiple people. The Build Pipeline does not have to live in the same Project as the Query.

You should then add a Schedule Trigger to the Build Pipline, that it gets executed automatically whenever you need it to.

Endpoints

SendGrid Endpoint

The SendGrid endpoint can be used if you want to send e-mails using SendGrid. All you need is a SendGrid API Token with the permissions to send e-mails. For Documentation about this, see here

SMTP Endpoint

The SMTP endpoint can be used to send e-mails using standard SMTP interfaces. It supports common TLS configurations as well as authentication.

Azure Repos / Team Foundation Server Endpoint

This Endpoint is needed when you want to send a query that exists only in someone's "My Queries" folder. It is not needed if you want to send out queries living in the "Shared Queries" folder.

Shared Queries

Shared queries can be scheduled without any other authentication, it uses the authentication/authorization of the Agent to connect to Azure DevOps Service / Azure DevOps Server.

Appdynamics devops - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Appdynamics devops

[youtube]

Appdynamics devops Main news today Appdynamics devops

How SAS is Using AppDynamics to Maintain a DevOps Environment

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) solutions are typically associated with optimizaiton for applications. However, as SAS Principal Systems Engineer Peter Anderson explained, APMs can foster a strong DevOps cluture.

Join the DZone community and get the full member experience.

DevOps is a movement fusing development and operations, and communication between devs and IT ops professionals. At the same time, software development should remain automated. Many major tech companies have adopted the tenants of DevOps, including analytics company SAS. Maintaining a DevOps environment means adopting tools and practices to foster such relationships.

Peter Anderson, Principal Information Systems Engineer at SAS, explored the overlap of DevOps and performance at the inaugural AppDynamics Meet Up on Feb. 25, 2016. ?To support a DevOps culture you need to have tools for continuous delivery and application performance monitoring,? Anderson explained, in a talk given on SAS?s Cary, NC campus. Since deploying AppDynamics? APM platform, SAS has used the unified monitoring solution to great benefit.

?Adopting DevOps culture and tools can maximize the effectiveness of your time? -- Peter Anderson

The flowmap presented for their ecommerce store clearly exhibited the power of the AppDynamics platform. It included an auto-generated flowmap, which stayed updated with application changes. Agile development, another key concept in the dev world, means that many systems are distributed, and constantly changing. By having an auto-generated flowmap, app changes are accounted for automatically. This, Anderson stated, was a huge plus for SAS.

?The first time I used a flowmap to solve a problem,? Anderson elucidated, ?I was with the developer and we were deploying a second environment for a second application that was under development. The developer called me, and I think it was a Friday afternoon, everything breaks on a Friday afternoon.? Unfortunately, the wrong data was being displayed in the user interface (UI). Anderson and the dev ran down the list of standard checks: data source definitions, external property files, etc. The pair opted to try this new tool, AppDynamics, that had just been deployed. ?Let?s check out this AppDynamics, maybe it can reveal some information we?re missing.? Once they?d pulled up the flowmap, it was soon apparent that the application was unfortunately talking to the wrong database. The developer was then able to diagnose and correct the problem.

AppDynamics has further helped quality assurance, Anderson allowed. A core global production app had a significant data load that was scheduled for weekend maintenance, and estimated to complete in 36 hours. The test environment yielded the potential for improved database queries. Developers were thus able to tune these queries, and go one step further: offering a concrete business impact using AppDynamics. Performance improvements during testing chipped five hours off of the expected data load completion time, with little to no impact on users.

Ever since the digital transformation hit, business has evolved to the point where every company is a software company. Regardless of whether a business produces software, or simply uses various tools, there?s an emphasis on IT and software development. The fusion of operations and development is DevOps. Monitoring is essential for maintaining a DevLosp environment, with the notions of collaboration, testing, reliability, and communication. Transparency hugely helps, and that?s where SAS is applying the AppDynamics platform: for optimizing DevOps culture. While APM solutions like AppDynamics might be associated more commonly with application optimization, as Anderson detailed, monitoring platforms are also crucial for allowing and encouraging a DevOps workplace.

Azure devops powershell - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops powershell

[youtube]

Azure devops powershell News update today Azure devops powershell

PowerShell parameters in the Azure DevOps pipelines

Build and release pipelines in the Azure DevOps can have complex structure. Sometimes there is a need to add PowerShell as one of the steps in these pipelines. Why? For instance to update content of the files from the repository or to use some Azure PowerShell cmdlets to make some updates. In this article I would like to present how to use PowerShell Arguments in the Azure DevOps build and release pipelines.

PowerShell Arguments in the Build pipelines

Let?s start from the Build pipelines and PowerShell task. First we have to create sample PowerShell script which will be stored in the GIT repository. We will use this script in the Build piepeline step. I put this script in the ?config? folder located in the ?master? branch:

Below I present the content of this specific script. What we would like to achieve is to retrieve two variables and pass them to the script as parameters. There are two parameters:

These are declared in the ?Variables? tab in the Build configuration:

Now let?s analyze build step. For this example lets add only one step with PowerShell script file from the repository above.

As you can see in the ?Arguments? field we have to declare which Variables we want to pass to the PowerShell script as parameters:

Now in the PowerShell script we can get these Variables as params:

Then we can use them normally in the script:

Try to run Build and see the result:

Open step with PowerShell script and see the logs. You should see names declared in the Variables earlier:

PowerShell Arguments in the Release pipelines

Steps for the Release pipelines are quite the same. First we have to publish PowerShell script from the repository in the Build artifact.

Now configure new Release pipeline and connect Build artifact with it:

Then we have to add Variables that we want to pass:

Now select PowerShell script from the artifacts:

Now we have to declare ?Arguments? exactly like in the Build pipeline step:

Creat new release and verify logs:

Summary

In this article I presented how to inject Variables into PowerShell scripts which are the part of the Build and Release pipelines. Of course this is just a simple example but you can also use this method for more advanced scripts and scenarios. For instance you could get secrets from the Azure Key Vault, load them into Variables Groups and then access them from the PowerShell script.

Background: I have a release pipeline in azure devops that consumes one main artifact, the setup. The setup packs several binaries in a certain version inside. In the release pipeline I want to find the system tests that fit to the binaries that were packed in the setup. These system tests are published as artifact together with the binaries.

I have the following piplines, that are triggered one after another:

BinaryPipeline -> publish artifacts: "binaries", "system tests"

SetupPipeline -> consumes artifact "binaries" from BinaryPipeline, publish artifacts: "setup",

Release pipeline -> consumes artifact "setup" from setup pipline, consumes "system tests" from BinaryPipeline

Problem: The release pipeline should consume the artifact "system tests" from the same build (of BinaryPipeline) that was consumed to build the setup.

I tried to solve the problem with the REST API, but

returns only the produced artifacts, not the consumed.

I see the following workarounds, still I don't like them:

Publish a text file that contains version information -> Best workaround. I don't like that I have to rely on a special file in artifacts.

Set build properties (although I didn't find out how to set the properties during build) -> Didn't find out how

Republish the system tests in my setup build -> Bad pactrice to copy artifacts

Parse the logs -> Bad because I've to rely on title names of tasks

How can I get the consumed pipeline artifacts from a build via REST API in Azure Devops?
