<p>With Microsoft?s recent acquisition of GitHub, Git is top-of-mind. Git is a free and open-source distributed version control system. This system has a very different workflow than TFVC, or Team Foundation Version Control, a centralized version control. Git is becoming increasingly popular. Microsoft?s Docs state that you should use Git unless you have a specific reason for using a centralized version control instead. Within Microsoft, the VSTS/TFS teams and Windows team have moved entirely to Git. Why would someone choose to make the switch from centralized version control to distributed?</p>
<h2>Branching</h2>
<p>One of the biggest advantages of Git is its branching ability. With centralized version control, branches are expensive and merging is no picnic. With Git, it is the opposite. So, one is able to create a branch for each new code change, thereby ensuring the master branch is always production quality.</p>

<h2>Distributed Development</h2>
<p>Microsoft?s VSTS/TFS teams are spread all over the globe. The distributed nature of Git allows the team to scale with ease. With centralized version controls, a developer works from their own repo copy that points back at a single central repository. With Git, however, each developer has their own local repository. This repository houses a full history, which allows for commits, inspections, and diffs without a network connection. Like feature branches, distributed development makes for a more reliable experience.</p>
<p>Git is also the default version control for all new projects in TFS and VSTS, but TFVC is still supported (and will continue to be, until stated otherwise). Furthermore, builds with Git have additional functionality that is not available in TFVC, such as using the same build definition for all branches.</p>

<h2>Preseed apt_get for unattended_installs</h2>
<p>Installation of some packages require user input, which breaks the entire concept of ?unattended? installs. Here?s a quick fix to get around that.</p>
<p>First, on a setup computer, install the following:</p>
<p>sudo apt-get install debconf-utils</p>
<p>Now, install whatever packages you wish to later install in an unattended mode. Answer the questions for installation appropriately when prompted. Next we will export those answers into a ?seed? file that we can use when installing the package on a new machine. For instance, I?ve installed several ldap authentication packages, so I might want to grab all of the settings those packages ask for.</p>

<p>If you remember from yesterday, we created an archive that included a setup script and several config files. Place the ldap.seed file inside that archive along with the other scripts, and just before doing the apt-get install add the following line to the add2network.sh file:</p>

<h1>Consider This When Planning your TFS to Azure DevOps Migration</h1>
<p>I will start by saying that the best source for instructions on how to go about migrating your TFS server to Azure DevOps is the official guide, which you can find at https://aka.ms/TFSImportData. You definitely want to use it when you decide that you want to migrate. Read it thoroughly and follow it to the letter.</p>
<p><strong>Depending on what version of TFS you intend to migrate and what features you are using</strong>, there are a few things that in my opinion are РІ??majorРІ?? considerations because they have the potential of adding scope to your migration efforts. While you will find out about them as you read through the official migration guide, I believe there is value to knowing these things prior to embarking in such journey.</p>
<p><strong><u>Please note:</u></strong> This post assumes the reader is familiar with the features mentioned below. Also, while there are other Migration Options, such as this one, this post assumes the reader is trying to follow the high-fidelity route.</p>
<h2>Automated Builds</h2>
<p>If you are using XAML Builds in your TFS, you should know that there is a new approach to build automation in Azure DevOps and you (or the owners of those build definitions) will eventually need to migrate them over to the new system (<strong>Azure Build Pipelines</strong>). This was introduced in TFS 2015 (see Release Notes for additional information). Migrating XAML Builds is a manual task that you will want to plan for as part of your move to Azure DevOps. And while that new build automation system is awesome, there have some enhancements to it that make it even better; it is a feature that is in Preview mode at the time of this writing and it is referred to as <strong>Pipeline as Code</strong> (see this blog post for more information). It enables you to use YAML files for your build definitions. These YAML files are stored in your source control repository and one of the things that I really like about that, is that they (your build definitions) can get branched along with your source code. I strongly recommend that you look at both options and make an informed decision as to which one to migrate your XAML Builds to. My preferred approach to do that is to go through these short Azure DevOps hands-on labs:</p>
<h2>Release Management</h2>
<p>The scenario for Release Management is very similar to what I just described above for Automated Builds so I am not going to make you read a lot of repeat information. Release Management is now part of Azure Pipelines (<strong>Release Pipelines</strong>). You will also need to migrate those manually if you are not already using them on a recent version of TFS and as of the time of this writing, there is no YAML support for Release Pipelines. To get familiar with the feature I recommend you go through the corresponding hands-on lab:</p>
<h2>New Work Item Tracking Experience</h2>
<p>Work items have received a facelift and depending on your TFS Work Items user-base and any customizations (see next section), you may want to roll out this change gradually. TFS 2017 has both versions available and you (or each user) can choose between the old and the new experience. In Azure DevOps you only have the new experience. Product documentation includes recommendations on how to go about rolling out the new experience. For Work Item Tracking, I recommend you give the following hands-on lab a try:</p>
<h2>Work Item Customizations</h2>
<p>The new Work Item Tracking Experience is not just an updated UI. There are some differences and when switching to the new experience, a Best-effort transformation is performed. There are a few other differences, including but not limited to:</p>

<h2>SharePoint and SSRS Integrations</h2>
<p>Integration with SharePoint takes a modern approach and the TFS Extension for SharePoint is no longer supported.</p>
<p>Since Azure DevOps is a SaaS offering, you do not have access to a local database or data warehouse like you do when you are running TFS. Any custom reports will need to be replaced. With Azure DevOps you can leverage Dashboards, Widgets and Power BI.</p>
<h2>Preview Features</h2>
<p>Some TFS features may be in Preview for import to Azure DevOps Services. Visit https://aka.ms/AzureDevOpsImportPreviewFeatures to learn more about this.</p>
<h2>Pre-Migration Upgrade</h2>
<p>The TFS Import Service supports only the two latest releases of TFS at a given time. So you will want to get your TFS upgraded to the latest version. Depending on what version you are currently running, how many and how large your Team Project Collections are, this could be a lengthy process. Also, you may end up having to perform OS and SQL Server upgrades. Remember to check the system requirements for each version of TFS that you have to go through as part of your upgrade process (see upgrade matrix below) and make sure you are always using supported versions of Windows and SQL Server. Whenever possible, I choose to perform one or more dry-runs of the TFS upgrade on an isolated environment using recent backups of the production databases (also see this post). Doing that helps plan properly for downtime, as well as to proactively identify and resolve (or prepare a solution for) any issues that may arise during your production upgrade. <p>This week I studied about how release notes can be handled by a team. On the first sight it looks like a lot of additional work but it shouldn't be.</p>
<p>Release notes should be considered a part of the DevOps process and every team member involved in the Sprint deliverables should contribute to the release notes, as who's better to explain a new feature / update / bug, other than the person who worked on it. In addition this strengthens the sense of ownership on the deliverable.</p>
<p>Release notes can be published in a variety of channels such as a new wiki page on Azure DevOps, Slack or attaching the page to your build results. Also different versions can be created per audience.</p>
<p>Below I will explain an initial PoC on drafting up a release note document using a a DevOps Query which outputs the results on an html. eg my query looks like this</p>

<p>1) Create a Powershell script for gathering the work items associated with the release and also generate the html file that will be the output. The script below will query the project specified and output the results in an html file. Custom and default fields can be specified as well. <em>Kudos to my colleague Dave for coming up with the script.</em></p>
<p>2) The above script includes parameters which will be passed during execution.In order to authenticate against Azure DevOps you can either use a generated PAT (Personal Access Token) or alternate credentials. The former provides more control regarding the permissions while the latter is not recommended for use. To generate a PAT click on your profile.</p>
<p>Values for $account, $project, $reportGuid can be extracted from the aforementioned query's URL.</p>

You definitely want to use it when you decide that you want to migrate. Read it thoroughly and follow it to the letter.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Depending on what version of TFS you intend to migrate and what features you are using&lt;/strong&gt;, there are a few things that in my opinion are РІ??majorРІ?? considerations because they have the potential of adding scope to your migration efforts. While you will find out about them as you read through the official migration guide, I believe there is value to knowing these things prior to embarking in such journey.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;Please note:&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; This post assumes the reader is familiar with the features mentioned below. Also, while there are other Migration Options, such as this one, this post assumes the reader is trying to follow the high-fidelity route.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Automated Builds&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you are using XAML Builds in your TFS, you should know that there is a new approach to build automation in Azure DevOps and you (or the owners of those build definitions) will eventually need to migrate them over to the new system (&lt;strong&gt;Azure Build Pipelines&lt;/strong&gt;). This was introduced in TFS 2015 (see Release Notes for additional information). Migrating XAML Builds is a manual task that you will want to plan for as part of your move to Azure DevOps. And while that new build automation system is awesome, there have some enhancements to it that make it even better; it is a feature that is in Preview mode at the time of this writing and it is referred to as &lt;strong&gt;Pipeline as Code&lt;/strong&gt; (see this blog post for more information). It enables you to use YAML files for your build definitions. These YAML files are stored in your source control repository and one of the things that I really like about that, is that they (your build definitions) can get branched along with your source code. I strongly recommend that you look at both options and make an informed decision as to which one to migrate your XAML Builds to. My preferred approach to do that is to go through these short Azure DevOps hands-on labs:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Release Management&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The scenario for Release Management is very similar to what I just described above for Automated Builds so I am not going to make you read a lot of repeat information. Release Management is now part of Azure Pipelines (&lt;strong&gt;Release Pipelines&lt;/strong&gt;). You will also need to migrate those manually if you are not already using them on a recent version of TFS and as of the time of this writing, there is no YAML support for Release Pipelines. To get familiar with the feature I recommend you go through the corresponding hands-on lab:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;New Work Item Tracking Experience&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Work items have received a facelift and depending on your TFS Work Items user-base and any customizations (see next section), you may want to roll out this change gradually. TFS 2017 has both versions available and you (or each user) can choose between the old and the new experience. In Azure DevOps you only have the new experience. Product documentation includes recommendations on how to go about rolling out the new experience. For Work Item Tracking, I recommend you give the following hands-on lab a try:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Work Item Customizations&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The new Work Item Tracking Experience is not just an updated UI. There are some differences and when switching to the new experience, a Best-effort transformation is performed. There are a few other differences, including but not limited to:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For details on customizing your Work Items see the Customize your work tracking experience page.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;SharePoint and SSRS Integrations&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Integration with SharePoint takes a modern approach and the TFS Extension for SharePoint is no longer supported.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Since Azure DevOps is a SaaS offering, you do not have access to a local database or data warehouse like you do when you are running TFS. Any custom reports will need to be replaced. With Azure DevOps you can leverage Dashboards, Widgets and Power BI.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Preview Features&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;Some TFS features may be in Preview for import to Azure DevOps Services. Visit https://aka.ms/AzureDevOpsImportPreviewFeatures to learn more about this.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;h2&gt;Pre-Migration Upgrade&lt;/h2&gt;&lt;p&gt;The TFS Import Service supports only the two latest releases of TFS at a given time. So you will want to get your TFS upgraded to the latest version. Depending on what version you are currently running, how many and how large your Team Project Collections are, this could be a lengthy process. Also, you may end up having to perform OS and SQL Server upgrades. Remember to check the system requirements for each version of TFS that you have to go through as part of your upgrade process (see upgrade matrix below) and make sure you are always using supported versions of Windows and SQL Server. Whenever possible, I choose to perform one or more dry-runs of the TFS upgrade on an isolated environment using recent backups of the production databases (also see this post). Doing that helps plan properly for downtime, as well as to proactively identify and resolve (or prepare a solution for) any issues that may arise during your production upgrade.
