<h2>A Dependency Track Dashboard Widget for Azure DevOps</h2>
<p>This post is about adding a widget to your Azure DevOps Dashboard showing the Dependency Track information on one or more of your projects.</p>
<p>If you are unaware what a great product Dependency Track is, I would suggest a detour and read up on it here: https://dependencytrack.org/</p>
<p>OWASP Dependency Track software is described as a ?Software Supply Chain Component Analysis platform. It allows organizations to identify and reduce risk from the use of third-party and open source components. It usually starts with software creating a Bill of Material of all components used and this Bill of Material is then inspected and analyzed for known vulnerabilities.</p>
<h4>What the widget does</h4>
<p>The Dependency Track software itself has excellent dashboards and reports, but we need a simple way to notify the team on the status of the most recent analysis. We can of course setup email alerts for this (and we should), but we can also hint at the status by showing it on one of our Team Dashboards:</p>

<p>Adding the widget</p>

<p>If you install it in your tenant, you can add it to one of your dashboards:</p>

<p>After this, you need to configure the widget with three parameters:</p>

<li>A project tag: this can be any tag that is used by Dependency Track projects;</li>
<li>A Dependency Track Url: this is the Url to your Dependency Track instance. Usually something like: <em>https://servername/api/v1/project/tag/</em></li>
<li>A Dependency Track API key: the API key with at least the ?VIEW_PORTFOLIO? and ?VULNERABILITY_ANALYSIS? permissions. See the official Dependency Track docs for more information.</li>

<p>We use ARM outputs quite extensively in our Azure DevOps pipelines. At times you may need to get outputs from previous steps and store them as variables to be consumed further down the pipeline. The following blog post already details this process really well blog post.</p>
<p style="clear: both">However, once the pipeline is finished these variables are lost and therefore if you need to refer them at a later stage you will need to find the deployment task in Azure (if it still exists) and manually get the outputs again. <p>The solution to this, is to save these variables to a variable group in Azure DevOps which can then be referred to in other pipelines. This article will show you how to use Azure CLI to create a new variable group in Azure DevOps and save your runtime variables to it.</p>
<h2>Requirements</h2>
<p>First you need to assign the</p>

<h2>Update Pipeline</h2>
<p>Next, we will add a couple of tasks to login to Azure DevOps CLI from within the pipeline using the $(System.AccessToken) . More on this can be found here.</p>
<p>After this, we will add a PowerShell Task to our pipeline to create the Variable Group and populate the first variable.</p>
<blockquote><p>Note: Although in Microsoft?s documentation it mentions to use echo $ <AZURE_DEVOPS_CLI_PAT>| az devops login to login, I was getting error message when creating the Variable Group. Therefore I use echo $(System.AccessToken) | az devops login instead.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Modify output script</h2>
<p>In our pipeline to retrieve outputs from ARM templates we use a PowerShell tasks to capture the JSON outputs and use the captured output in following steps. You can find more information regarding the output script here.</p>
<blockquote><p>Note: I had already previously made other modifications to the script to handle Object type variables and read 1 level further into those Objects.</p></blockquote>
<p>We will modify the output.ps1 script to add an extra parameter called VariableGroupID. This is the VariableGroupID variable that we captured when we created the variable group in the PowerShell task in the previous step. If this parameter is passed it will record whatever variable it is creating as a new entry into the variable group with the variable group id.</p>
<h2>Running the pipeline</h2>

<h1>Solving the looping problem in Azure DevOps Pipelines</h1>
<p>What should you do if you want to have a Pipelines job that loops based on dynamic inputs? Working around this problem has always been a pet peeve of mine - luckily today we?ve got options! Three in total to be precise, with different degree of difficulty.</p>
<p>One of them is the simplest and has been around for ages: embed what you need to do in a script. Try to split the problem down to the lowest common denominator, and run the script. I just did this in a situation where we needed to run a non-predictable number of SonarQube scans as part of a CI build. We had the whole codebase in the branch (because reasons?), and based off the standard folder structure used by the projects I put together a script that runs the SonarQube scanner based on the number of plugins changed in a certain commit.</p>
<p>If you think about that, it?s a very basic challenge. The <em>problem</em> (I don?t even want to call it as such, but still a challenge regardless) is that there is no built-in facility for such a concept, hence I had to improvise.</p>
<p>The second one is using a build definition to be used as a template. You can trigger a dynamic number of these from another build (with a REST API call) that acts as orchestrator. This is slightly harder, but it allows for the GUI-based definitions to be used as templates so you can re-use what you have and you know already.</p>
<p>The third (and better) way of doing so comes with the YAML pipelines: the <em>each</em> expression.</p>
<p><em>Each</em> in YAML is equivalent to a for loop. So you can create a template which will have a set of actions, and pass parameters across during your build. YAML is looser than a GUI-based build definition IMHO, so it allows for something like this:</p>

<p><strong>Azure Pipelines | Azure DevOps Server 2020 | Azure DevOps Server 2019 | TFS 2018</strong></p>
<p>In Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2018 and previous versions, build and release <em>pipelines</em> are called <em>definitions</em>, <em>runs</em> are called <em>builds</em>, <em>service connections</em> are called <em>service endpoints</em>, <em>stages</em> are called <em>environments</em>, and <em>jobs</em> are called <em>phases</em>.</p>
<p>A deployment group is a logical set of deployment target machines that have agents installed on each one. Deployment groups represent the physical environments; for example, "Dev", "Test", "UAT", and "Production". In effect, a deployment group is just another grouping of agents, much like an agent pool.</p>
<p>When authoring an Azure Pipelines or TFS Release pipeline, you can specify the deployment targets for a job using a deployment group. This makes it easy to define parallel execution of deployment tasks.</p>
<p>Specify the security context and runtime targets for the agents. As you create a deployment group, you add users and give them appropriate permissions to administer, manage, view, and use the group.</p>
<p>Let you view live logs for each server as a deployment takes place, and download logs for all servers to track your deployments down to individual machines.</p>
<p>Enable you to use machine tags to limit deployment to specific sets of target servers.</p>
<h2>Create a deployment group</h2>
<p>You define groups on the <strong>Deployment Groups</strong> tab of the <strong>Azure Pipelines</strong> section, and install the agent on each server in the group. After you prepare your target servers, they appear in the <strong>Deployment Groups</strong> tab. The list indicates if a server is available, the tags you assigned to each server, and the latest deployment to each server.</p>
<p>The tags you assign allow you to limit deployment to specific servers when the deployment group is used in a Deployment group job. Tags are each limited to 256 characters, but there is no limit to the number of tags you can use. You manage the security for a deployment group by assigning security roles.</p>
<h2>Deploy agents to a deployment group</h2>
<p>Every target machine in the deployment group requires the build and release agent to be installed. You can do this using the script that is generated in the <strong>Deployment Groups</strong> tab of <strong>Azure Pipelines</strong>. You can choose the type of agent to suit the target operating system and platform; such as Windows and Linux.</p>
<p>If the target machines are Azure VMs, you can quickly and easily prepare them by installing the <strong>Azure Pipelines Agent</strong> Azure VM extension on each of the VMs, or by using the <strong>Azure Resource Group Deployment</strong> task in your release pipeline to create a deployment group dynamically.</p>
<p>You can force the agents on the target machines to be upgraded to the latest version without needing to redeploy them by choosing the <strong>Upgrade targets</strong> command on the shortcut menu for a deployment group.</p>
<h2>Monitor releases for deployment groups</h2>
<p>When release is executing, you see an entry in the live logs page for each server in the deployment group. After a release has completed, you can download the log files for every server to examine the deployments and resolve issues. To navigate quickly to a release pipeline or a release, use the links in the <strong>Releases</strong> tab.</p>
<h2>Share a deployment group</h2>
<p>Each deployment group is a member of a <strong>deployment pool</strong>, and you can share the deployment pool and groups across projects provided that:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>The user sharing the deployment pool has User permission for the pool containing the group.</li>
<li>The user sharing the deployment pool has permission to create a deployment group in the project where it is being shared.</li>
<li>The project does not already contain a deployment group that is a member of the same deployment pool.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>The tags you assign to each machine in the pool are scoped at project level, so you can specify a different tag for the same machine in each deployment group.</p>
<h3>Add a deployment pool and group to another project</h3>
<p>To manage a deployment pool, or to add an existing deployment pool and the groups it contains to another project, choose the <strong>Manage</strong> link in the <strong>Agent Pool</strong> section of the <strong>Deployment Group</strong> page. In the <strong>Deployment Pools</strong> page, select the projects for which you want the deployment group to be available, then save the changes.</p>
<p>When you navigate to the <strong>Deployment Groups</strong> page in the target project(s), you will see the deployment group you added and you can assign project-specific machine tags as required.</p>
<h3>Create a new deployment pool</h3>
<p>You can add a new deployment pool, share it amongst your projects, and then add deployment groups to it. In the <strong>Deployment Pools</strong> page, choose <strong>+ New</strong>. In the <strong>New deployment pool</strong> panel, enter a name for the pool and then select the projects for which you want it to be available.</p>
<p>When you navigate to the <strong>Deployment Groups</strong> page in the target project(s), you will see the deployment group you added and you can assign project-specific machine tags as required.</p>
<h3>Automatically deploy to new targets in a deployment group</h3>
<p>When new targets are added to a deployment group, you can configure the environment to automatically deploy the last successful release to the new targets.</p>

<p>Azure Pipelines can be used to build images for any repository containing a Dockerfile. Building of both Linux and Windows containers is possible based on the agent platform used for the build.</p>

<h3>Get the code</h3>
<p>Fork the following repository containing a sample application and a Dockerfile:</p>

<p>Sign in to your Azure DevOps organization and navigate to your project.</p>
<p>Go to <strong>Pipelines</strong>, and then select <strong>New Pipeline</strong>.</p>

<p>You might be redirected to GitHub to sign in. If so, enter your GitHub credentials. You might be redirected to GitHub to install the Azure Pipelines app. If so, select <strong>Approve and install</strong>.</p>
<p>Select <strong>Starter pipeline</strong>. In the Review tab, replace the contents of azure-pipelines.yml with the following snippet -</p>
<p>Select <strong>Save and run</strong>, after which you're prompted for a commit message as Azure Pipelines adds the azure-pipelines.yml file to your repository. After editing the message, select <strong>Save and run</strong> again to see the pipeline in action.</p>
<p>Learn more about how to push the image to Azure Container Registry or push it other container registries such as Google Container Registry or Docker Hub. Learn more about the Docker task used in the above sample. Instead of using the recommended Docker task, it is also possible to invoke docker commands directly using a command line task(script)</p>
<h2>Windows container images</h2>
<p>Windows container images can be built using either Microsoft hosted Windows agents or Windows platform based self-hosted agents (all Microsoft hosted Windows platform-based agents are shipped with Moby engine and client needed for Docker builds). Learn more about the Windows agent options available with Microsoft hosted agents.</p>
<p>Linux container images can be built using Microsoft hosted Ubuntu-16.04 agents or Linux platform based self-hosted agents. Currently the Microsoft hosted MacOS agents can't be used to build container images as Moby engine needed for building the images is not pre-installed on these agents.</p>
<h2>BuildKit</h2>
<p>BuildKit introduces build improvements in the areas of performance, storage management, feature functionality, and security. To enable BuildKit based docker builds, set the DOCKER_BUILDKIT variable as shown in the following snippet:</p>
<p>BuildKit is not currently supported on Windows hosts.</p>
<h2>Pre-cached images on hosted agents</h2>
<p>Some commonly used images are pre-cached on the Microsoft-hosted agents to avoiding long time intervals spent in pulling these images from container registry for every job. Images such as microsoft/dotnet-framework , microsoft/aspnet , microsoft/windowsservercore , microsoft/nanoserver , and microsoft/aspnetcore-build are pre-cached on Windows agents while jekyll/builder and mcr.microsoft.com/azure-pipelines/node8-typescript are pre-cached on Linux agents. The list of pre-cached images is available in the release notes of azure-pipelines-image-generation repository.</p>
<h2>Self-hosted agents</h2>
<p>Docker needs to be installed on self-hosted agent machines prior to runs that try to build container images. To address this issue, a step corresponding to Docker installer task can be placed in the pipeline definition prior to the step related to Docker task.</p>
<h2>Script-based docker builds</h2>
<p>Note that it is also possible to build (or any Docker command) images by running docker on script as shown below:</p>
<p>The above command results in an equivalent image in terms of content as the one built by using the Docker task. The Docker task itself internally calls docker binary on script, but also stitches together a few more commands to provide a few additional benefits as described in the Docker task's documentation.</p>
<h3>Is reutilizing layer caching during builds possible on Azure Pipelines?</h3>
<p>In the current design of Microsoft-hosted agents, every job is dispatched to a newly provisioned virtual machine (based on the image generated from azure-pipelines-image-generation repository templates). These virtual machines are cleaned up after the job reaches completion, not persisted and thus not reusable for subsequent jobs. The ephemeral nature of virtual machines prevents the reuse of cached Docker layers.</p>
<p>However, Docker layer caching is possible using self-hosted agents as the ephemeral lifespan problem is not applicable for these agents.</p>
<h3>How to build Linux container images for architectures other than x64?</h3>
<p>When you use Microsoft-hosted Linux agents, you create Linux container images for the x64 architecture. To create images for other architectures (for example, x86, ARM, and so on), you can use a machine emulator such as QEMU. The following steps illustrate how to create an ARM container image:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Author your Dockerfile so that an Intel binary of QEMU exists in the base image. For example, the raspbian image already has this.</li>
<li>Run the following script in your job before building the image:</li>
</ol>

<p>In build, most of work is update the version which in manifest of VSIX, build\create package. For the version increased, here I use the counter expression feature which supported in VSTS to achieve that:</p>
<p>Use this expression in variable declaration bloc. For detailed and completed build process, refer to my sample YAML code:</p>
<p>In UpdateVersion.ps1 file:</p>
<p>After build succeed, set the release pipeline for this repos. In release, use powershell script and VsixPublisher.exe to publish the vsix file.</p>
<p>In CD, use VsixPublisher.exe which exist in VS to publish the vsix file.</p>
<p>You can set the PAToken in Variable tab, then <strong>set it as secret</strong>. Thus it would not be public for others. Here PAT token is a necessary one which could not be replaced by others. And also, when generate the token, need choose <strong>All accessible organizations</strong>. Or it will cause the permission error.</p>

<h1>How to Separate Your AWS Production and Development Accounts</h1>

<p>Managing AWS can be hard. It has tons of services, very granular ways to enable and disable access between services, and lots of security implications that you have to keep in mind. Through the years at Codeship, we?ve learned many best practices, and we?ve seen many customers follow the same ones to make managing AWS accounts easier.</p>
<p>One of those easy to follow and very important best practices is setting up separate AWS accounts for development and production. We didn?t have that from the beginning ? often we would find ourselves hesitating when trying out a new feature or generally experimenting with existing services.</p>
<p>At some point, we needed to make sure we had a separate sandbox account that we could use to play around in. At the same time though, like many startups, we still had AWS credits that we also wanted to use for that separate account, so consolidated billing was a must.</p>

<p>I?m going to walk you through setting up a separate account, enable consolidated billing will give you a list of next steps you can look into to extend your usage of AWS.</p>
<h2>Setting Up a Separate Account</h2>
<p>Simply go to the Amazon Console and create a new account that can be used as your sandbox account. We prefer the name ?sandbox? for ours, as its meaning is clear that this account can be used to experiment and test with your setup.</p>

<p>While naming and using accounts is easier for small teams, you might want to create separate accounts once you hit a larger scale and have several teams working on independent systems.</p>
<p>As Netflix explained in their Security Monkey introduction blogpost, they have dozens of AWS accounts under management. While they are a particularly huge example of this concept, it can make sense to set up separate accounts for production infrastructure for much smaller teams.</p>
<h2>Enabling Consolidated Billing</h2>
<p>Of course you want to make sure that you pay for all of those individual accounts through one account so you can easily keep your expenses in check. Consolidated Billing is a way to set this up.</p>
<p>We currently run our billing through the main production account. Another option that we?re thinking about for the future is to create a separate AWS billing account that doesn?t run any infrastructure and is strictly there for billing purposes. That would let us decouple access to our production infrastructure from access to our billing, so non-technical people can log in and take a look at the billing without getting near production infrastructure.</p>
<p>Of course IAM gives you a lot of control to make sure they can?t access production infrastructure either, but having it in a separate account is just that much nicer.</p>
<p>Log into the account you want to pay with, go to the billing settings in the upper right menu, and from there to consolidated billing. Here you can sign up for consolidated billing.</p>

<p>After your payment setup is validated, you?re ready to send invitations to other accounts to join.</p>
<p>Send a request by filling out the email and an optional note after clicking Send a Request. The account you?re inviting needs to go to their Consolidated Billing configuration page and accept the invite.</p>

<p>From now on, all bills payable by the linked account will be visible and paid through the main account.</p>

In case you want to separate that out more, it might be a good idea to create a production, a QA, and a sandbox account ? one for production release, a complete clone for internal QA that?s not used for real experiments but just for QA, and a sandbox where developers can do whatever they want.</p>

<h2>Getting the Most Out of Your Sandbox Accounts</h2>

<p>Managing AWS effectively means more than just building infrastructure. You have to make sure your development team has all the tools it needs to not only build a successful system but also to experiment.</p>
<p>Consolidated Billing can help with managing costs and overviewing your accounts but also giving your team the room to try new things without impacting production.</p>
