<p>Azure DevOps offers a variety of features that enable goals, such as artifact filters and gates. In a recent prototype I evaluated three new extensions, that are going to knock the socks off our pipelines and allow us to create a ?wow? moment for our hard working system engineers.</p>
<p>GitVersion allows us to looks at our Git history during a build, work out the semantic version of the changes, and flow the version through the build and release pipeline. It makes simplifies the versioning of builds, releases, and makes it easy to pinpoint from which code base a release has emerged from.</p>
<p>The two other extensions have been developed by a fellow ALM | DevOps Ranger, Richard Fennel.</p>
<p>The cross-platform Generate Release Notes based on Release Comparison extension generates a release notes markdown file using the same API calls as the Azure DevOps Pipeline Release UI. It uses a template that allows you to generate professionally looking and detailed release notes.</p>

<p>Continuous Delivery is the ability to get changes of all typesРІ??including new features, configuration changes, bug fixes and experimentsРІ??into production, or into the hands of users, <em>safely</em> and <em>quickly</em> in a <em>sustainable</em> way.</p>
<p>Our goal is to make deploymentsРІ??whether of a large-scale distributed system, a complex production environment, an embedded system, or an appРІ??predictable, routine affairs that can be performed on demand.</p>
<p>We achieve all this by ensuring our code is <em>always</em> in a deployable state, even in the face of teams of thousands of developers making changes on a daily basis. We thus completely eliminate the integration, testing and hardening phases that traditionally followed РІ??dev completeРІ??, as well as code freezes.</p>
<h3>Why continuous delivery?</h3>
<p>It is often assumed that if we want to deploy software more frequently, we must accept lower levels of stability and reliability in our systems. In fact, peer-reviewed research shows that this is not the caseРІ??high performance teams consistently deliver services faster <em>and</em> more reliably than their low performing competition. This is true even in highly regulated domains such as financial services and government. This capability provides an incredible competitive advantage for organizations that are willing to invest the effort to pursue it.</p>
<p>The practices at the heart of continuous delivery help us achieve several important benefits:</p>
<p><strong>Low risk releases</strong>. The primary goal of continuous delivery is to make software deployments painless, low-risk events that can be performed at any time, on demand. By applying patterns such as blue-green deployments it is relatively straightforward to achieve zero-downtime deployments that are undetectable to users.</p>
<p><strong>Faster time to market</strong>. ItРІ??s not uncommon for the integration and test/fix phase of the traditional phased software delivery lifecycle to consume weeks or even months. When teams work together to automate the build and deployment, environment provisioning, and regression testing processes, developers can incorporate integration and regression testing into their daily work and completely remove these phases. We also avoid the large amounts of re-work that plague the phased approach.</p>
<p><strong>Higher quality</strong>. When developers have automated tools that discover regressions within minutes, teams are freed to focus their effort on user research and higher level testing activities such as exploratory testing, usability testing, and performance and security testing. By building a deployment pipeline, these activities can be performed continuously throughout the delivery process, ensuring quality is built in to products and services from the beginning.</p>
<p><strong>Lower costs</strong>. Any successful software product or service will evolve significantly over the course of its lifetime. By investing in build, test, deployment and environment automation, we substantially reduce the cost of making and delivering incremental changes to software by eliminating many of the fixed costs associated with the release process.</p>
<p><strong>Better products</strong>. Continuous delivery makes it economic to work in small batches. This means we can get feedback from users throughout the delivery lifecycle based on working software. Techniques such as A/B testing enable us to take a hypothesis-driven approach to product development whereby we can test ideas with users before building out whole features. This means we can avoid the 2/3 of features we build that deliver zero or negative value to our businesses.</p>
<p><strong>Happier teams</strong>. Peer-reviewed research has shown continuous delivery makes releases less painful and reduces team burnout. Furthermore, when we release more frequently, software delivery teams can engage more actively with users, learn which ideas work and which donРІ??t, and see first-hand the outcomes of the work they have done. By removing the low-value painful activities associated with software delivery, we can focus on what we care about mostРІ??continuously delighting our users.</p>
<p>If this sounds too good to be true, bear in mind: continuous delivery is not magic. ItРІ??s about continuous, daily improvementРІ??the constant discipline of pursuing higher performance by following the heuristic РІ??if it hurts, do it more often, and bring the pain forward.РІ??</p>

As SAP users, there are 4 key areas that you need to have for a successful DevOps adoption and they are:</p>

<p>These may seem straightforward but they are critical parts of an Agile Application Lifecycle Management. This translates into faster deployments of bug fixes, software improvements or even better quality of life changes for the IT team. This provides a competitive advantage for your business or a unique position that you are able to differentiate from your competitors.</p>

<p>The chart above describes the ideal DevOps processes for SAP landscapes or projects. From the chart, you can see that DevOps is not an easy process and it would require multiple teams to work together cohesively and constantly provide feedback. Thankfully, SAP has released tools that would help this process. SAP Focused Solutions was created with agile DevOps processes in mind and tools within Focused Build like the Readiness Solution dashboard greatly helps the team with visual cues. The barrier to adopt SAP DevOps can be further reduced with it is based on effective use of change control automation platforms like SAP Solution Manager.</p>
<p>Once the right tools are in place, SAP recommends a 3 level pathway to DevOps:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Develop a multi-speed approach to managing SAP change</li>
<li>Introduce agile development methodologies</li>
<li>Graduate to a DevOps approach</li>
</ol>
</p>
<h3>Develop a multi-speed approach to managing SAP change</h3>
<p>There is certainly a difference in speed which IT teams manage different software, even within SAP?s ERP. Certain parts of the software requires more attention than others and this is unavoidable. However, this does not mean that all SAP change needs to be slow, or that governance and control should result in sluggish delivery of system of record changes.</p>
<p>Through a multi-track approach, your IT team can control the speed of change without increasing the risk. By separating the type of change required, or by the potential risk impact, you can segregate each change into its own category with its own delivery and approval track. You can easily do with the change management tools found within SAP Solution Manager.</p>
<p>Divide the work into types of change by potential impact and run each type down its own delivery and approval track. Low impact being the faster tracks with fewer approvals and minimal testing and higher impact the slower tracks.</p>
<h3>Introduce agile development methodologies</h3>
<p>You might now be familiar with sprints, stories, releases, or other methods of software agile that breaks up development into smaller pieces of work. It is now time to implement the continuous delivery/continuous integration processes from the chart above. Again, tools like SAP Test Suite can greatly aid in the test and development automation to help lower the overall impact and risks involved.</p>
<p>This stage also builds on the multi-track release methodology and you are encouraged to further segregate work categories to streamline your processes. This allows for all tasks to be planned, managed and monitored by PMO team with the easier tasks to be completed quicker and the harder tasks to be done properly.</p>
<h3>Graduate to a DevOps approach</h3>
<p>At this stage, your team should be extremely familiar with the best practices of Agile and the tools that enable your team to continuously deliver and integrate. As more of your team ?shifts left?, you will start to be able to reap the benefits and thereby increase the speed and volume of which changes are carried out.</p>
<h3>Eventual Outcomes</h3>
<p>As more of these changes are introduced throughout the organization, you will see a momentum of changes that will accelerate the potential and value of your IT team. Bear in mind that a successful adoption of SAP DevOps means that the speed, quality improvements and risk reduction go hand in hand with the ability and flexibility to change their SAP environments. DevOps is a strong accelerator to meet the demands of your business requirements while not compromising business continuity. <p>This extension integrates GitLab with Azure Pipelines. With this extension, you will be able to download the sources from a GitLab repository (using clone command) and use downloaded sources in Azure Pipelines. The extension comes as an artifact source in Release Management and also has a Build task to download sources in your build pipeline.</p>

<h3>1. Connecting to GitLab</h3>
<p>The extension provides a GitLab service connection to connect to GitLab using a Personal access token (PAT).</p>
<p>To connect, go to Project Settings | Service connections tab and create a New service connection and click on GitLab</p>

<p>Once you have the GitLab service connection setup, go to Release hub in Azure Pipelines and edit a release definition. Click Add [1 in image below] on artifacts and select GitLab [2 in image below].</p>

<li>Latest from specific branch : This will list all the available branches and download the latest commit from the selected branch.</li>
<li>Specify at the time of release creation : As the name suggests, you will have the option to specify the commit id while triggering a release.</li>

<p>Once you link your artifact to release, you will also be able to browse the linked artifacts from GitLab in any of the tasks in your pipeline. In the image below, I am browsing artifacts from GitLab inside a Copy Files task. Cool right?</p>

<p>In some scenarios, you may also want to consume the GitLab repository in your Azure Pipelines build definition. The extension provides the build task to clone and download the repository.</p>
<p>In your build definition, search for the task and you should see the task listed.</p>

In the image below, I am setting it to a Azure DevOps variable $(build.sourcedirectory) but you can use any valid path.</p>
