You can filter out and reject builds, stages and jobs by specifying conditions in your build configuration (your .travis.yml file).

You can find more information on the build config format in our Travis CI Build Config Reference.

Conditional Builds #

You can configure Travis CI to only run builds when certain conditions are met. Any builds that do not meet these conditions are listed in the Requests tab of your repository, even though the actual build is not generated.

For example, this allows builds only to run on the master branch:

Conditional Stages #

You can configure Travis CI to only include stages when certain conditions are met. Stages that do not match the given condition are silently skipped. For example, this allows the deploy stage to run only on the master branch:

Configure Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) to create Nuget feeds

Any software development team working on a software product generally needs to consume the components either already developed by another team in their organization or another third party organization. So they require a mechanism through which they can create, share and consume the source code. Most often a times, this code is bundled into ?packages? that contain compiled code (as DLLs) along with other content needed in the projects that consume these packages.

An Introduction to Nuget

In .NET world, this mechanism has come to be defined by Nuget. It defines how .NET packages are created, hosted, consumed and provides necessary tools for mentioned roles. In this blog post, we?ll learn how to configure Visual Studio Team Services or VSTS for creating and consuming nuget packages.

Contents of Nuget Package

In very simple words, a NuGet package is a single ZIP file with the .nupkg extension that contains compiled code (DLLs), other files related to that code, and a descriptive manifest that includes information like the package?s version number. Library developers create package files and publish them to a host. Package consumers receive those packages, add them to their projects, and then call that library?s functionality in their project code. NuGet itself then handles all of the intermediate details.

A package might be complete in itself or it might also be referring to other packages by for one of its DLL to work. However, you need only concern yourself with those packages that you?re directly using in a project. If any of those packages themselves consume other packages (which can consume packages), NuGet takes care of all those down-level dependencies. This is what makes nuget so much powerful.

Concept of Nuget feeds and Classification

Generally, NuGet packages are stored at a central location and this central location is called as a Feed. A feed can be an external server hosted by NuGet.org or Microsoft. It can also be internal to the team in a network share or a folder in the file system. NuGet packages are consumed through a command line tool that is integrated in Visual Studio or in the NuGet Package Manager, which is a GUI extension to Visual Studio.

Public feeds are accessible to everyone and does not require any authentication to allow consumption of packages. In turn, private feeds requires some kind of authentication mechanism to prove who you are and then only you would be able to consume packages hosted on such feeds. Private feeds may be internal to organization or may be shared between couple or more organizations as well.

Add Package Extension for VSTS

By default, VSTS cannot be used to host Nuget feeds. However, Microsoft has created a extension called ?Package Management? to provide this functionality. Just like all other extensions, we need to go to VSTS market place at https://marketplace.visualstudio.com and search for the ?Package Management? extension:

Search for Packages Extension and click Get

Once you select it, click Get and then Visual Studio will ask it to choose the VSTS account you need to associate it to.

Create a new Nuget Feed

If you had added above mentioned extension successfully, if you go to build and release tab, you would now see a new option named ?Packages? from the dropdown:

This is where to go, if we need to create nuget feeds and then store packages inside those feeds. Since we have not created our first feed yet, if we click it, it will ask us to create our first feed. Provide a name for the feed, select appropriate option and then create:

You can also change these settings later by editing the feed.

Connect to Package Feed

To connect to feed, first we need to identify the feed options. For that, select ?Connect to Feed? right next to feed name:

Connect to Package feed created

This will load a pop-up window like below:

Consume packages from the packages feed

As highlighed in above snap, we can now consume packages using various technologies like Nuget, npm, Maven etc. This also means that Package feeds are not only for Nuget packages, they can also be used to store npm packages, maven packages etc. as well.

Azure DevOps Server Benefits

The main benefits of Azure DevOps Server are project management, code repository, data consistency, hybrid development, cognitive services, quality check, security, and continuous updates. Here are more details on Azure DevOps Server?s benefits:

Project Management

This helps software development faster and easier. You can use Azure DevOps Server from the start of the project (idea) to the creation (lab management, testing) and eventually to deployment (release management).

Code Repository

Because Azure DevOps Server has unlimited code repositories, you can store all of your codes in one software. You can collaborate with the rest of your team, and configure who can get access to different repositories.

Data Consistency

Having large amounts of code is confusing, it?s even worse when codes change or get erased when migrating your data. Azure DevOps Server can integrate with SQL or PostgreSQL in the cloud to ensure that you can get frictionless data migration. You can transfer your data and existing apps safely and without fear. Our guide on backup tools can also help if you need a solution for backing up your data.

Hybrid Deployment

Azure DevOps Server can be deployed either in the cloud, at the edge, or on-premise. You can take your pick whether you want your data stored in a remote server and access it using any device, locally on your device to create a centralized data center, or locally but in small data centers near the source to reduce traffic and delay.

Cognitive Services

This helps you build smart apps even without knowledge of machine-learning. Azure DevOps Server AI can help you speed up the process of building apps.

Quality Check

This helps you check for possible issues while still developing the software so you can save time while at the same time produce more high-quality applications.

Security

You can make access faster as well as make security stronger across different environments through Azure DevOps Server?s unified identity platform. This can protect you from 99.9% of cybersecurity hacking. You can apply single sign-on or multi-factor authentication to protect your data and choose who can access the database.

Continuous Updates

Since the software is getting updated regularly, you can be sure that Azure DevOps Server is future-proof. Having continuous updates also ensures that software bugs will be cleaned and that the software still supports the latest advancements in technology.

Manifesto

Through Security as Code, we have and will learn that there is simply a better way for security practitioners, like us, to operate and contribute value with less friction. We know we must adapt our ways quickly and foster innovation to ensure data security and privacy issues are not left behind because we were too slow to change.

By developing security as code, we will strive to create awesome products and services, provide insights directly to developers, and generally favor iteration over trying to always come up with the best answer before a deployment. We will operate like developers to make security and compliance available to be consumed as services. We will unlock and unblock new paths to help others see their ideas become a reality.

We won't simply rely on scanners and reports to make code better. We will attack products and services like an outsider to help you defend what you've created. We will learn the loopholes, look for weaknesses, and we will work with you to provide remediation actions instead of long lists of problems for you to solve on your own.

We will not wait for our organizations to fall victim to mistakes and attackers. We will not settle for finding what is already known; instead, we will look for anomalies yet to be detected. We will strive to be a better partner by valuing what you value:

That is correct, the traditional track at McKinsey from bottom to top is Analyst>Associate>Engagement Manager>Associate Partner>Partner. Moving from one position to the next normally takes 1 to 3 years. Each one of the previous role develops from Junior to Senior (e.g. from Junior analyst to Senior analyst).

Many consulting firms have different names for the same type of role but the biggest difference is merely in the naming. To put things in context and from junior to senior roles:

Analyst (McK and ATK) / Associate (BCG and Bain): entry level consultants focus on gathering data/information, analyzing it and delivering it via presentations. They are guided by associates and managers.

Associate (McK and ATK) / Consultant (BCG and Bain): apart from being promoted from analyst, associates typically join after an MBA or relevant work. They usually own a stream/functional area of a project. They independently oversee the work of analysts and develop the project deliverables of their specific stream. Depending on tenure, associates might be involved in client relationship and team?s leadership. Starting from Associate level, consultants interview candidates.

Engagement manager (McK) / Case team leader (BCG) / Manager (Bain)/ Project manager (ATK): are responsible of planning, executing and delivering a consulting project. Their tasks include leading teams, coordinating with all project stakeholders (client and partners), resolving/mediating issues. Managers are also expected to participate to internal events (e.g. holding seminars/trainings for other consultants) and supporting business development opportunities with clients.

Associate partner (McK) / Junior partner (Bain) / Principal (BCG and ATK): they own the project delivery (they typically manage multiple projects at once) and are expected to sell new consulting work.

Partner: they are less involved in the daily execution of a project and focus more on high-level strategy (they are the key owners of project deliverables). A big part of their work is dedicated to selling new consulting assignments to both existing and new clients.

Tfs agents - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Tfs agents

[youtube]

Tfs agents Recent news headlines Tfs agents

TFS Build Agent Fails to Configure & Run with TFS2018 Self-Signed SSL Certificate

December 21, 2017 by Ben Day

A last week I wrote about fixing some problems between Git and Team Foundation Server 2018 when TFS is configured to use a self-signed SSL certificate for HTTPS. Well, after I got that part working, I found a new problem while trying to configure a TFS build agent that would talk to my self-signed SSL certificate TFS machine.

When you are installing the TFS build agent on Windows, there are two steps: 1) download and extract the build agent zip and 2) run config.cmd to configure the agent. (Want a walk-through for installing the TFS build agent? Check out my TFS install guide.) With the self-signed SSL cert TFS, I kept getting an error on the config.cmd portion of the agent install that simply said ?an error occurred while sending the request?.

The solution was simple and all that needed to happen was to add the self-signed certificate to the trusted root certificate store. After that the installation runs as expected. Basically, the TFS agent configuration script was having the same problem with that self-signed SSL certificate as Git was.

The instructions for how to get the certificates and install them, check out my blog post on fixing Git and self-signed SSL certificates. The script that fixes this problem is 03-import-iis-self-signed-cert-from-file.ps1. After you?ve run 03-import-iis-self-signed-cert-from-file.ps1, you can re-run config.cmd to configure the TFS build agent and it should work.

HINT: Definitely run the build agent service as a user rather than Network Service because you?re going to need to fix a few things that will require you to log in as the build user account.

The Build Agent Service Won?t Run

Ok. So you?ve got the agent service configured. You start the agent service and if you look at the list of Windows Services (services.msc), the service is running. But if you go to the Agent Pool in TFS, that agent isn?t running. That?s not good.

If you look at the logs (c:\agent\_diag\Agent_*.log), you see an error that says

[2017-12-19 20:55:26Z ERR VisualStudioServices] GET request to https://demo18-tfs/_apis/connectionData ... ngeId64=-1 failed. System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException: An error occurred while sending the request. ?> System.Net.Http.WinHttpException: A security error occurred
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Runtime.CompilerServices.TaskAwaiter.HandleNonSuccessAndDebuggerNotification(Task task)
at System.Net.Http.WinHttpHandler. d__105.MoveNext()
? End of inner exception stack trace ?
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Runtime.CompilerServices.TaskAwaiter.HandleNonSuccessAndDebuggerNotification(Task task)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Services.Common.VssHttpMessageHandler. d__17.MoveNext()
? End of stack trace from previous location where exception was thrown ?
at System.Runtime.ExceptionServices.ExceptionDispatchInfo.Throw()
at System.Runtime.CompilerServices.TaskAwaiter.HandleNonSuccessAndDebuggerNotification(Task task)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.Services.Common.VssHttpRetryMessageHandler. d__4.MoveNext()

Guess what? Same problem again. The self-signed certificate isn?t trusted.

Log in to your build machine as your build agent user account and then run 03-import-iis-self-signed-cert-from-file.ps1. This will add the TFS self-signed root cert to the trusted root certificates for the build user?s account.

Restart the build agent service. If you go to the agent pools, the build agent should be running.

Azure devops pull request build - Эдуард Кабринский

Join the DZone community and get the full member experience.

This article demonstrates how to trigger a build pipeline for scheduled continuous integration and pull requests using the Azure DevOps build pipeline trigger.

The build pipeline triggers tab specifies the events that trigger builds, specify the same build pipeline for CI and scheduled builds.

Builds are configured by default with a CI trigger on all branches. Control which branch gets triggered with sample syntax.

Include the branches you want to trigger and then exclude the branches you don't want to trigger.

In addition to the "define certain branches" in the branches lists, configure triggers based on tags.

Disable the CI Builds entirely by specifying trigger: none

By using the Scheduled trigger, the pipeline is triggered every day or on random days.

Build Completion Triggers

When a vast number of products have a component that depends on another, these components are often independently built.

When an upstream service changes (e.g packages), the downstream service has to be rebuilt and revalidated. Usually, people manage these dependencies manually.

With Azure DevOps, the CI build triggers a build upon the successful completion of another build. Artifacts built by an upstream can be downloaded and used in the later build, and the build will generate variables such as Build.TriggeredBy.BuildId and Build.TriggeredBy.DefinitionId.

Pull Request (PR)

Pull requests are used to review and merge code changes in a git project. A pull request is when teams review code and give feedback on changes before they merge it into the master branch. Reviewers can go through the proposed code changes and comments and approve or reject the code.

Enable pull request validation under triggers, and specify the branch to merge the code.

Commits to a file at root repository on a topic branch (developing).

After committing code into the topic branch, create a pull request.

Create a pull request, and choose Master branch as the base and compare it as a topic branch. This will compare to the master branch.

Mention title and comments about the pull request, then create a pull request.

Once the pull request is created, the CI build will automatically start.

Go through the details, and it will navigate to the Azure DevOps portal. The build will start and run automatically.

You can view the build with build Id and show a Pull Request build.

Squash merging keeps the default branch histories clean. When a pull request is completed, merge the topic branch into the default branch (usually Master). This merge adds the commits of the topic branch to the main branch and creates a merge commit to make any conflicts between the default and develop branch.

When squash merging is done, it is a better practice to delete the source branch.

The build is triggered through CI (Continuous Integration).

Azure pipelines self hosted - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Azure pipelines self hosted

[youtube]

Azure pipelines self hosted News headlines Azure pipelines self hosted

How to create and configure Azure DevOps Pipelines Agent

This article aims to help you choose and configure an agent for your CI Pipeline.

Introduction

When getting to know Azure Devops, the most difficult question is probably what steps you need to follow to make your CI Pipeline work correctly.

The crucial point in running the Azure CI Pipeline is the work of the Azure Pipelines Agent, which primary task is to establish a connection with the machine on which you want to run your DevOps CI Pipeline.

In this article, we will consider the following issues to help you choose an agent for your CI Pipeline:

MS-agent vs Self-hosted agent

Advanced information about MS-agents

When to use MS-agents and when to use self-hosted agents

Configuring MS-agent

Configuring self-hosted agent.

We will also take a look at the differences between the two agents to help you decide which one best suits your needs.

The figure below displays the Azure CI Pipeline workflow with a Microsoft-hosted agent and a self-hosted agent.

As you can see from the figure above, your pipeline has to be run in some kind of operating environment on some machine. A Microsoft-hosted agent and a self-hosted agent are bound to manage that pipeline execution.

In case of using a MS-Agent, the execution takes place in one of the ready-made operating environments in Azure Windows, macOS, or Ubuntu, which is deployed to Azure on the fly (provided as SaaS).

In case of using a self-hosted agent, the execution takes place on your physical or virtual machine (on-premise environment).

MS-agent vs Self-hosted agent

Thus, the primary difference between a MS-agent and a self-hosted agent lies in the fact that with a MS-agent, you get a ready-prepared virtual machine in the cloud with pre-installed operating system (Windows, macOS, or Ubuntu). You get a fresh virtual machine each time you run a pipeline.

If you use a self-hosted agent, the pipeline will be executed on your physical machine.

The table below shows the main comparative characteristics of the two agents.

Advanced information about MS-agents

You can get information about the pre-installed software or hardware for a specific MS-agent using PowerShell. For example, to receive information about software and hardware for MS-Agent and a Windows-2019 image, execute the following PowerShell script.

By executing the script, we get the following information about the virtual machine:

As mentioned in the table above, some virtual machine images for MS-agent have a broad range of useful pre-installed programs. To find out what programs are pre-installed for a Windows-2019 image, we can create a PowerShell task with the following script:

After executing this script, we will see a list of pre-installed useful programs (this list is very long and the figure below displays only a part of it):

When to use MS-agents and when to use self-hosted agents

If you have a small project with source code that does not take much time to download, it also does not require a lot of time to compile the project and perform unit tests. In that case, Microsoft-hosted agent will be the best choice. As indicated in the comparison table above, the virtual machine image and all pre-installed programs (Visual Studio, Python, Chrome, etc.) for MS-Agent have the latest updates. After executing a pipeline, this virtual machine image is discarded and does not affect the execution of the subsequent pipelines.

However, if you have problems related to performance, accessibility, security, or other problems of that kind, it is better to settle upon a self-hosted agent. One of the important drawbacks of self-hosted agents is that you will have to keep track of operating system updates, as well as clear the disk of artifacts between pipeline jobs.

Configuring MS-agent

The setup of Microsoft-hosted agent is quite simple and straightforward:

In the Agent pool combo box, select Azure Pipelines.

2. In Agent Specification drop-down list box, select a required virtual machine image.
