<p>Grouping Shared Variables in Azure DevOps Pipeline helps to organize and managing common variables across different Build and Release Pipelines. When you have multiple sets of pipelines; and many of them use common variables; instead of having variable defined for each pipeline we can leverage the feature of grouping variables</p>
<h2>Grouping Shared Variables in Azure DevOps</h2>
<p>We can create the Variable Groups from <strong>Pipelines</strong> ? <strong>Library</strong> and then select <strong>+ Variable Group</strong>.</p>

<p>Go to the Build / Release Definition, Move to Variables Tabs, and then select ?<strong>Variable Groups</strong>.? Under Variable Groups, you will have the option to ?<strong>Link Variable Group</strong>? that will list all the Variable groups created under the <strong>Library</strong>.</p>

<p>Variable Group can be clone very easily also you can have Team specific security access for the groups.</p>

<h1>Inspec-Azure in Azure DevOps Pipeline</h1>

<p>I am going to show how you can run Inspec-Azure tests in an Azure DevOps Pipeline to test and validate your Azure Resources. In a previous blog post, I blogged <strong>Using Inspec-Azure to test your Azure Resources</strong> . In that blog post I detail how to configure and run Inspec-Azure locally.</p>
<p>In this post I will detail how you can run this in an Azure DevOps Pipeline.</p>
<h3><strong>What is Inspec-Azure?</strong></h3>
<p>Inspec-Azure is a resource pack provided by Chef that uses the Azure REST API, to allow you to write tests for resources that you have deployed in Microsoft Azure. These tests can be used to validate the Azures resources that were deployed via code using Terraform or Azure RM templates. Inspec is an open source framework that is used for testing and auditing your infrastructure, in this blog post I will show how you can create tests against your Azure resources using Inspec-Azure.</p>
<h3><strong>Why run Inspec-Azure in a Pipeline?</strong></h3>
<p>Begin the compliance of your Azure resources right at the source ? the Azure Pipeline that you are deploying Azure resources from!</p>
<p>Having Inspec-Azure run within your Pipeline integration can flag issues straight away and notify relevant parties that the current pipeline release has a validation testing issue. Great!</p>
<p>The deployment may deploy OK and look fine but the deployment has not been validated as what is expected to be deployed and the actual state the specific resources are in.</p>
<h3><strong>Time to Azure DevOps</strong></h3>
<p>In this blog post, I am going to detail how to create an Azure DevOps Pipeline to run Inspec-Azure testing, it will be a single stage Pipeline to outline how to run Inspec-Azure only. You can use this to implement into your required pipelines.</p>
<p>As my example will be ran on an Azure DevOps managed agent, you will need to install ruby and then install inspec-bin via gem install, this is done below:-</p>
<p>The next task, runs a bash script which calls ?inspec exec? , notice within the script block you will need to input the required parameters:-<br /></p>
<p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td>AZURE_SUBSCRIPTION_ID</td> <td>Subscription ID of your Azure Subscription</td> </tr> <tr> <td>AZURE_CLIENT_ID</td> <td>Client ID of Azure AD Application that has required access to the subscription</td> </tr> <tr> <td>AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET</td> <td>Client Secret of above Azure AD Application</td> </tr> <tr> <td>AZURE_TENANT_ID</td> <td>The Azure Active Directory tenant(directory) ID.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </p>
<p>Notice the last line of the above, ?reporter? This will output the test results in JUnit XML file. This will be used with the PublishTestResults@2 to display these results within Azure DevOps Portal ? I will show this later</p>
<p>Finally, to publish test results above to Azure DevOps portal, we will use the PublishTestResults@2 task</p>
<p>Awesome, lets look at how running this pipeline looks within Azure DevOps; I am testing against resources deployed in Azure Portal via Terraform , these resources are found here.</p>
<p>Azure Inspec testing found here ? these tests will test for:-</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Resource Group: <strong>tamops</strong> exists</li>
<li>Virtual Network: <strong>tamops-vnet</strong> exists in Resource Group: <strong>tamops</strong></li>
<li>Virtual Network: <strong>tamops-vnet</strong> has address space: 192.168.0.0/16</li>
<li>Virtual Network: <strong>tamops-vnet</strong> has subnet: <strong>subnet</strong></li>
</ul>
</p>
<p><em><strong>Note:-</strong> In the latest version of Inspec-Azure there is only a certain amount of resources that are available to be tested against, in previous versions of Inspec-Azure you can use azure_generic_resource but it is deprecated in newer versions. In a later blog I will show how this can be referenced and used within a Docker container.</em></p>

<blockquote><p>Since I wrote this post things regarding the agents and proxies changed drastically, for good. Now setting up an agent behind the proxy is a documented procedure and can be done directly from the initial configuration of the agent. You can read more about the procedure itself here Run a self-hosted agent behind a web proxy.</p></blockquote>
<p>It often happens that I do write about my love affair with a web proxy systems. In the past years I shared many of these challenges through my blog. Following is another one that I came lately across and that is precisely, allowing the build agent tasks to gain the access to internet via a proxy. <br />Till now I have never noticed any necessity for setting explicitly the access via a proxy server on any of our build agents. We were using Azure App Service Deployment and other build/release tasks that did accessed an external web address and everything always worked without the need for any particular intervention. However, after the TFS 2017 Update 1, we noticed that our Azure App Service Deployment task started failing with the following error:</p>
<p>Error: connect ETIMEDOUT 104.45.0.17:443</p>
<p>Clearly the call towards the Azure services was failing. Couldn?t be anything else then our lovely proxy. Strange thing was that it was all working till before the upgrade. At this point I was curious why this was happening. Here is what I found.</p>
<p>With the TFS 2017 Update 1, a new version of the Azure App Service Deployment build/release task has shipped. This new task implementation is now based on Node.js handler and no Node.js applications were able to access the web. So obviously I went to setup the necessary to enable Node.js applications to get the access to the web. This was however not the right solution, also because build agent doesn?t use the Node.js engine installed on that machine, but executes everything via a version of Node.js that is shipped together with the agent itself. In order to get a bit more insight in this, I had to peak in the couple of MS Github repositories and luckily I found a reference in which I see that the Node.js HttpClient wrapper sets the proxy for all calls based on the environment variables called HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY. Now, I tried adding those two variables and voila my build task started working again (after the build agent service restart).</p>
<p>So, in order to have your Node.js based tasks that do need to access Internet from a build agent behind a proxy, add two new environment variables called HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY and set the value of those variables pointing to the proxy itself, like http://my.proxy.local:8080.

<p>Do not forget to restart your agent and give it a go. <br />I hope this solves it.</p>

<h1>How to build, sign and deploy your UWP application using Azure DevOps and App Center</h1>
<h2>Create your appxupload and distribute it to your users.</h2>
<p>In this tutorial I m going to show you how to build and sign your UWP application and distribute it to your users through App Center.</p>
<p>To do that, we need to follow these steps:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Create an UWP certificate (PFX) for your application</li>
<li>Install the PFX file into your build agent</li>
<li>Build and sign your UWP application using Azure DevOps</li>
<li>Publish the appx packages into Azure DevOps or App Center</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>So let?s start by going to <strong>Azure DevOps</strong>!</p>
<p>Inside the <em>Pipelines</em> tab create a <em>New pipeline</em> and follow the 4 steps to get the source code from the correct repository. Azure DevOps will automatically create a new azure-pipelines.yml at the root of your project folder. This is where the job definition will be defined and then interpreted by Azure DevOps.</p>
<h2>Prepare the certificate</h2>
<p>First of all we need to create the PFX certificate and install it to the agent. To do that just follow my previous <strong>tutorial</strong> about it.</p>
<p>Now we have our certificate installed to our agent and a variables group called uwp-pipeline ready to use. We first need to restore the Nugets associated to our project, to do that just add these two tasks as first steps:</p>
<p>If you correctly follow the previous steps you should have an azure-pipelines.yml looking like this:</p>
<p>I personally like to automatically run my pipeline when the master branch is updated, it?s why I added the trigger option to the script.</p>
<h2>Build and sign your UWP application</h2>
<p>It?s time to build your UWP application and sign it using your certificate.</p>
<p>First, complete your list of variables as below by adding the solution path, the build platform, the build configuration and the appx Package Directory:</p>
<p>To sign the appx package we need to enable the signature configuration, pass the PFX certificate location, the associated password and finally we need the <em>thumbprint</em> of the certificate. The <em>thumbprint</em> can be found inside the <em>.csproj</em> of your UWP project after choosing the certificate inside Visual Studio.</p>
<p>Add the <em>thumbprint</em> to the variables group and then add the build task like this:</p>
<p>Notice that the variable called mySecureFile correspond to the name we previously setup in the download secure file task. This variable allow us to get the PFX file path installed on the agent. This build task will generate the Appx Packages.</p>
<h2>Distibute your application</h2>
<p>We first need to add a task to copy our files from the working directory of our agent to the artifact staging directory like this:</p>
<p>Now we have two options:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Publish the entire Appx Packages folder inside Azure DevOps so it will be downloadable</li>
<li>Publish the .appxupload into App Center so it will be easily accessible to your users</li>
</ul>
</p>
<h3>Publish your artifact</h3>
<p>If you choose the first option just add the publish artifacts task to your pipeline like this:</p>
<p>When you run the pipeline, you will be able to download the Appx Packages. Here is what you should have if you display it inside Azure DevOps:</p>

<p>As you can see in the image above, you have the .appxupload file that can be uploaded to App Center, let?s do that in the next section!</p>
<h3>Upload your package to App Center</h3>
<p>Now we have our appxupload signed and ready to be sent to our users. My favorite tool for that is <strong>App Center</strong>, you can share your application with different groups of testers before publish it to a store and that?s really useful.</p>
<p>Let?s continue by setting up the connection between App Center to Azure DevOps. To do this, just follow my <strong>tutorial</strong> about it and then follow the next steps.</p>
<p>If you followed correcly the previous instructions you can now add your app slug and distribution group ID to the variables group. At this point your uwp-pipeline variables group should look like this:</p>

<p>Finally let?s add the following task to send our .appxupload into App Center like this:</p>
<p>If you run the pipeline now you will see the application in your App Center account:</p>
