How to integrate ServiceNow and Azure DevOps in 10 mins

We noticed that many of you wonder what effort it takes to integrate DevOps tools like Azure DevOps in ServiceNow. In this blog, we hope to prove this is actually really easy, as it can be done in as little as 10 mins!

Let?s start with answering the question why we would want to integrate ServiceNow and Azure DevOps in the first place. Both ServiceNow and Azure DevOps are not point solutions. They support a wide range of applications/modules for all sorts of use cases. Although there is some overlap between their use cases, their focus is different. By combining them, you have the best of both worlds. So, how are they different then? We?ve listed some strong areas of both:

Pick a use case

If you want to integrate ServiceNow (SN) with Azure DevOps (ADO), there is probably a use case to solve. There is quite a long list of potential use cases for integrating ServiceNow and Azure DevOps, but these three are by far the most common:

Synchronize work (tasks) between ServiceNow and Azure DevOps Boards. This allows (self-steering) teams to work on their own Azure boards, which are connected to other DevOps tools. For this use case, the Agile module of ServiceNow needs to be integrated with Azure Boards.

Consolidate information and updates from the DevOps delivery process (Coding, Building, Testing, Deploying). This will provide insights into progress and helps to build a case for Change Approvals. For this use case, ADO Boards, ADO Repos and ADO Pipelines need to be integrated with SN DevOps.

Auto create changes from Azure Pipelines, and automatically deploy them once a change is (auto) approved. For this use case, ADO Pipelines needs to be integrated with SN Change Management.

3 Principles to keep your integration simple

With modern cloud-native solutions like ServiceNow and Azure DevOps, integrations can be straightforward and easy. Many integrations can be set up by applying reusable plug-ins or packages that allow you to set up a working integration in a matter of minutes. Yet, integrating different tools and systems in an enterprise IT organization is rarely perceived as an easy and painless exercise. If you adhere to the following three principles, it can in fact be easy:

Stay out-of-the-box (OOTB)
Though platforms like ServiceNow and Azure DevOps are highly flexible, it is important to remember that the fact that you cancustomize applications does not mean you should. In fact, the opposite is true. If you use the pre-defined structure of attributes, state flows, processes, etc., you can leverage predefined mappings when setting up integrations. You?ll find that these standards are often based on industry best practices and actually support your processes really well.

Do not overcomplicate
With archaic, monolithic applications that were difficult to integrate and building integrations was error-prone, middleware concepts like Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) were introduced to make life easier. However, modern, cloud-native systems typically have excellent integration capabilities (e.g. REST APIs and web hooks). Hence, introducing additional links in the chain only adds complexity and dependencies, and does not add any value.

Do not try to eat the elephant at once
Due to endless possibilities, a common pitfall is to want everything at once. By scoping MVPs, you can quickly add value by solving the most impactful problems first. Next, you add the second most important features in an iterative way, allowing for continuous improvement and delivery of value.

Let?s show some integration action!

Now, let?s show you how easy it is to set up an integration in just 10 mins. We picked the integration Epics and Stories between Azure DevOps Boards and ServiceNow Agile from this overview of the most common integrations between ServiceNow and Azure DevOps:

Improve your Azure Pipelines with the new Runtime Parameters

Ditch variables. Parameters have finally arrived.

The Azure DevOps team has finally released Sprint 166. It?s a very small update but introduces a new neat feature that was way too long overdue.

Chances are high that you are familiar with some true madness like this:

It takes you three clicks to modify a single value for every single variable and for every run. Tedious and annoying.

Runtime Parameters Enter the Game

With this update, we?re adding runtime parameters. Runtime parameters let you have more control over what values can be passed to a pipeline. Unlike variables, runtime parameters have data types and don?t automatically become environment variables.

This is a real godsent because we turn the screens above into something beautiful like this that will save you a lot of time:

Let me quickly show you how so you don?t need to dig through the DevOps documentation.

My previous Pipeline definition used to look like this at the beginning of the YAML file:

And in the variables pane I had to set additional variables for them to show up in new pipeline run blade:

Why do we need to set variables in two different places?

First of all, let?s get rid of the variables in the variable pane and the YAML file.

Afterward, include the parameters key that takes a list of parameters. Let?s replace the build configuration variable with this:

Parameters are very versatile and can be restrained to many types you?re already used to such as strings, booleans, numbers, objects, but also steps, jobs, and stages from your pipeline definition. Wowzers.

A neat addition is that you can also set default values to it.

Moving on to the other variables, we can simply introduce two additional boolean parameters that are simpler than the one before:

Easy peasy. Now let?s replace all current variable references to parameters.

For this, you can simply swap out $(variableName) or variables.variableName to $<<parameters.parameterName>>) .

It?s important to know that parameters are only available at template parsing time and must be surrounded by $<<>> .

There is a special declaration type for all condition: keys. These don?t work for parameters, so you will need to replace declarations like these

Actually, I?m lying, you can make use of template variables and surround them with $<<>> like this:

But hear me out: This is probably something you are not used to and kinda feels weird at a first glance, but in the longterm, it helps you to organize and navigate to conditional steps in your definitions with ease because they are easier to spot than conditions and foremost they aren?t part of the parsed template and hence won?t show up in the jobs summary:

Voil?. Now it?s time to save and commit your modifications and run your facelifted pipeline. You?ll be greeted with this handsome blade:

And that?s how you could enhance your Azure DevOps Pipelines within 2 minutes. Worth it.

Here are some possible use cases for you to try out

Pass a Docker image tag as a parameter

Select the environment you would like to deploy to

Determine whether or not you would like to run integration tests

Set the version of your assembly/library/whatever

Pass your current mood as parameter and print with echo so your mates know how you are doing because why not

Cheers and have fun. Feel free to follow my profile for future posts.

Simple, secure and stable devops. Juju keeps complexity low and productivity high. Manage applications wherever they are run.

Juju allows you to retain a high-level understanding of all the parts of your system without being bogged down needing to know every hostname, every machine, every subnet and every specification of every storage volume.

Focus on your applications and their relations. Create a development environment on your laptop, then recreate that environment on the public cloud, onto bare metal servers or into a Kubernetes cluster.

Maximise your productivity by encapsulating specialist knowledge into Juju charms. They create repeatable, systematic and secure devops practices for all stages of your product?s lifecycle. Juju simplifies deployment, maintenance, scaling up and winding down.

Juju is an open source modelling tool for operating software in the cloud. Juju allows you to deploy, configure, manage, maintain, and scale cloud applications quickly and efficiently on public clouds, as well as on physical servers, OpenStack, and in containers. You can use Juju from the command line or through its GUI.

In modern environments, applications are rarely deployed in isolation. Even simple applications may require several other applications in order to function - like a database and a web server, for example. For modeling a more complex system, e.g. OpenStack, many more applications need to be installed, configured and connected to each other. Juju's application modelling provides tools to express the intent of how to deploy such applications and to subsequently scale and manage them.

At the lowest level, traditional configuration management tools like Chef and Puppet, or even general scripting languages such as Python or bash, automate the configuration of machines to a particular specification. With Juju, you create a model of the relationships between applications that make up your solution and you have a mapping of the parts of that model to machines. Juju then applies the necessary configuration management scripts to each machine in the model.

Application-specific knowledge such as dependencies, scale-out practices, operational events like backups and updates, and integration options with other pieces of software are encapsulated in Juju's 'charms'. This knowledge can then be shared between team members, reused everywhere from laptops to virtual machines and cloud, and shared with other organizations.

The charm defines everything you all collaboratively know about deploying that particular application brilliantly. All you have to do is use any available charm (or write your own), and the corresponding application will be deployed in seconds, on any cloud or server or virtual machine.

Eduard Kabrinskiy - Azure devops gated check in - Кабринский Эдуард

The Code Manual

Make everything with code

Build templates on Azure DevOps

Last time we created a gated check-in build for .NET Core app. It works very well, but we did there one thing which is in general a bad practice in our proficiency. We duplicated build steps for building and testing .NET Core app. We can do better than that, we can use templates. Following the documentation:

Templates let you define reusable content, logic, and parameters. Templates function in two ways. You can insert reusable content with a template or you can use a template to control what is allowed in a pipeline.

We will do both things.

Template definition

First what we need is a template definition. And we are halfway there as we already defined common steps. Now we need to extract them to a separate file and make a small change to parametrize it.

There is a small little change comparing to the original steps definition. We extracted buildConfiguration as a parameter. Instead of

It will allow us to pass build configuration as a parameter when we reuse this template.

Gated check-in (GC) build

Gated check-in build does exactly what is defined in the template and nothing more. For that purpose we use extends option.

As you see this build definition is minimal. What we do here is:

define triggers

define variable

select build template

Now is time for regular CI build.

Standard CI build

Standard CI build apart of steps defined in the template may contain additional steps.

This definition contains a little bit more:

define triggers

define pool

define variable

select build template

define other steps

There is more than one difference between definitions. GC build doesn?t have a pool definition. If you try to run build with pool definition and extends you will get an error.

I haven?t found yet a reason why it behaves like that, but when I find it I will update this blog post.

Summary

Templates are great option to simplify your builds. They help you reuse code and keep definition clean. And if you have many projects and many repositories, you will also find them useful. For this case, what you need is a central repository where you keep build templates and then reuse them in your repositories.

Azure devops xcode - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops xcode

[youtube]

Azure devops xcode News sites Azure devops xcode

iOS - Error Xcode 10 in Azure DevOPS - Issues with Provisioning Profile Task

I am having an issue with an Azure DevOPS pipeline for an Xcode iOS app. I have created the pipeline from scratch and it uses a yaml file where I define the build as well as the signing and provisioning based on Microsoft's official documentation. The build uses XcodeVersion=10 with CocoaPods and implements signing and provisioning. I have no problem with the pre-installation of the P12 cert, the build pulls it the from the Secure Files library and installs it successfully.

What's giving me an issue is the provisioning profile. I must be doing something wrong on the InstallAppleProvisioningProfile@1 task or in the configuration of the ProvisioningProfileUuid in the Xcode task because the build throws the following error on the Xcode task:

? error: "Register" requires a provisioning profile with the Wireless Accessory Configuration feature. Select a provisioning profile for the "Release" build configuration in the project editor. (in target 'Register')

I have tried setting the provProfileSecureFile setting of the InstallAppleProvisioningProfile@1 task to point to both a '.provisionprofile' and a '.mobileprovision' file but I still see no command being executed in the logs. The app can be built, signed and provisioned based on the 'MyProvisioning_Profile.mobileprovision' locally without a problem.

I would expect to see at least a command being executed from the InstallAppleProvisioningProfile@1 task but what I see are 2 successful, but empty tasks in the logs: 1. Pre-job: InstallAppleProvisioningProfile 2. InstallAppleProvisioningProfile

The Azure DevOPS Xcode task then fails with this error:

Has anybody using Azure pipelines has seen this issue before? How can I fix it?

Azure pipelines badge - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure pipelines badge

[youtube]

Azure pipelines badge Current news events Azure pipelines badge

Azure Devops ? Add your build status badges to your Wiki

Its always a good idea on your project to keep your project documentation up to date, I personally like to make use of the Wiki inside Azure Devops, we use Azure Devops almost exclusively at work now.

On the wiki we have a page which documents the Azure Builds and Release pipelines, so that people can get an idea of what the individual builds are for and explain the steps within the Release pipelines, for the most part this is really straightforward, but for new people joining the team it just makes life easier to have this kind of thing written down and explained.

On that note I wanted to show you how to add the status badges for each build to your Wiki, it took me a wee while to find this so I thought I?d blog it because I?ll forget and so other people can see how to do it.

An example of the kind of thing I am talking about is below: ?

So how do you find the Markdown for the badges so that you can add this to your wiki or elsewhere?

If you browse to your build(s) for your projects, click on the 3 ellipses on the right hand side, next to the Edit and Queue buttons and then choose Status Badge

Then you need to select the text next to Markdown, and then just paste this into your wiki page.

Hopefully someone finds this useful, bye for now.

Devops gitlab - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Devops gitlab

[youtube]

Devops gitlab Latest news today Devops gitlab

How to configure Gitlab-CI to Auto-deploy your App via SSH

End Goal: Using Gitlab-CI to Deploy your project to a server via SSH. ????

You have a Gitlab Runner with docker executor up and running(could be locally). You don?t? read this.

You have a Server to deploy to(could be locally too, it has to be reachable by the Runner).

You have a Gitlab account and already created a Repository for your project with a .gitlab-ci.yml file.

Introduction:

I don?t like introductions, but as you?re expecting one, let me show you something:

Happy???! Scroll down please ??

Short story long

characters

The characters of our ?Love??? story are:

William Shakespeare

Gitlab Repository( with a .gitlab-ci.yml file),

Gitlab Runner(with docker executor),

Server to deploy our app to, thru ssh.

Places

Our deployment story happens in at least two places(servers/clouds ) depends on your setup:

Gitlab itself; gitlab.com in case you don?t self-host GitLab.

Cloud to host the Runner and the Server( could be each on a different cloud).

The only important thing here is that the Runner can reach Server so SSH will be possible , also the Runner can reach your Gitlab; so you can enable the runner for our demo project(repository) in Settings > CI/CD > Runners . By ?reach? I don?t mean they has to be on the same network but at least they are ?pingable???. see ??

Gitlab Pipeline configuration:

Case 1: the Runner and the Server are in the same self-hosted VPC

In my example here; I have used the localhost to setup:

A vagrant machine hosts a Gitlab runner with Docker executor(Github repo ready-to-use runner). And your repository has this Runner enabled: Settings > CI/CD > Runners

Another vagrant machine with static IP to simulate a server(Github repo demo server).

So I have the Runner and the Server on the localhost, so the Runner can reach the server, and of course can reach the Gitlab too.

1- SSH to the Runner?s vagrant-machine, in case it?s not a vagrant machine skip: vagrant ssh

2- Generate an SSH key pair:
ssh-keygen -t rsa -N ?? -f

3- Get the Private key of the Runner?s machine:

Azure devops variable groups - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops variable groups

[youtube]

Azure devops variable groups News updates Azure devops variable groups

Updating Variable Groups from an Azure DevOps pipeline

We often need a permanent data store across Azure DevOps pipelines, for scenarios such as:

Passing variables from one stage to the next in a multi-stage release pipeline. Any variables defined in a task are only propagated to tasks in the same stage.

Storing state between pipeline runs, for example a blue/green deployment release pipeline could store the currently deployed ?color? in a variable group.

Passing data between pipelines, for example one build pipeline could create a VM immutable image and store its ID in a variable group used by a pipeline that deploys VMs.

While there is always the option to store the data externally (for example, using az storage entity to interact with an Azure Storage Table), we usually prefer to keep the Azure DevOps environment self-contained. Solutions include using Variable Groups with PowerShell and using Pipeline Artifacts as well as an Azure DevOps extension. Here?s a self-contained solution using Variable Groups and bash scripting.

Note that the REST API command we use deletes any variables defined in the Variable Group that are not passed within the query body, rather than merging definitions. Therefore, you must use a dedicated Variable Group for each instance in which want to assign a variable(s) within a pipeline (i.e. usually for each single variable).

Create a Variable Group (in the Azure DevOps project Library tab).

Create a dummy variable with any name and value (this is only so that we can save the Variable Group).

Save the variable group, and take note of the Variable Group ID (variableGroupId query parameter in the browser URL, when navigating to a variable group).

Create a single variable called FOO_VARIABLE_GROUP_ID , replacing FOO with something descriptive and set it to your variable group ID. Don?t define any other variables in the group, as they would be overwritten by the script below.

In the Variable Group security settings, grant the role ?Project Collection Build Service? Administrator privilege for the variable group.

Link the variable group to the pipeline.

In the agent job settings, enable ?Allow scripts to Access OAuth Token? (unless it is a YAML build, in which case this option is always on).

Now create a YAML task with the definition below, or if editing a release pipeline with the GUI, just paste the curl command into a script task.

Adapt FOO_VARIABLE_GROUP_ID with the variable you defined previously, and the FOO variable and valueIWantToSet with any variable(s) you want to set.

Note the trick that we store the variable group ID into the variable group itself, rather than hard-coding it into the pipeline definition. This makes the definition more portable.
