If you want to publish your own private javascript packages, you have a number of registries to select. Some of them are as follows,

If you are working with Azure DevOps, the most attractive way of setting up a private npm registry is using Azure DevOps Artifacts. This article is focused on how to create a private feed and publish your npm package there.

Before starting the work, we should learn a little bit about .npmrc file. ??

What is .npmrc?

This file is a configu r ation file for NPM, it defines the settings on how NPM should behave when running commands. When working locally in a project, a .npmrc file in the root of the project (near to node_modules and package.json) will set config values specific to this project.

Note that this only applies to the root of the project that you?re running npm in. If you define a registry inside .npmrc in your root folder, it affects only to your project.

This .npmrc file should contain credentials for all of the registries that you need to connect to.

Let?s start the journey!! ??

First of all, let?s create a new feed.

Step 01: Create a Feed

Go to Azure Artifacts

Select +New feed

Give the feed a name

Choose who can read and contribute packages in your feed

Choose the upstream sources for your feed

select Create

Why Upstreams?

If you want to use both private packages you?ve created and public packages from npmjs.com, the recommended way is using upstream sources. The npmjs.com upstream source allows you to merge the contents of npmjs.com into your feed such that the npm client can install packages from both locations. Enabling upstream sources also automatically enables the saving of packages you use from the upstream source.

Step 02: Connect to feed

Select Connect to feed

Select npm from the panel.

Now copy the content under Add this feed to your project .npmrc and paste it into your .npmrc

This defines the location of our npm registry. Now you need to generate credentials for your feed and save it in .npmrc file.

Just click on Generate npm credentials button and it will generate a set of credentials for your private feed. Simply copy the content under Add credentials to your user .npmrc manually and paste it also in .npmrc .

Now you are ready to install private npm packages from your Azure DevOps npm registry. Please make sure you have enabled npmjs.com as upstreams in Azure DevOps Artifacts to allow access to other public npm packages.

How to publish an npm package into my private npm registry?

It is really easy if you go through the following simple steps.

Go inside the root folder of the Javascript project that you want to publish.

Create an empty .npmrc file and add the registry and credentials as Step 03. (If you have created the file already, you can copy and paste the same .npmrc file)

Open command prompt inside root folder

It directly publishes into your Azure DevOps private registry. ??

I am able to list the users. But cannot create a new user as 'GraphUserPrincipalNameContext' class is not available in the API.

AnjanaAK commented Jun 19, 2019 ?

I already referred to it. We can use the create_user function from that client. But the function asks for a object as input parameter.

But the microsoft documentation ( https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/a ... s-rest-5.0 ) says that "The body of the request must be a derived type of GraphUserCreationContext such as GraphUserMailAddressCreationContext, GraphUserOriginIdCreationContext , or GraphUserPrincipalNameCreationContext."

So i decided to use GraphUserPrincipalNameCreationContext. But such a class/interface is not available in python. I am confused that how should I use the create_user method. That's why I asked for a sample.

vtbassmatt commented Jun 19, 2019

Ah, sorry, thanks for the correction. @tedchamb @ramrajesh it looks like nothing in the Python API derives from GraphUserCreationContext . I don't know if this is a client gen problem or a graph API problem. Can one of you help?

tedchamb commented Jun 19, 2019

The generator does not know about the sub types, so does not generate them. We need to fix that. In the meantime you should be able to create your own sub types for these.

Do you mean that I should define a GraphUserPrincipalNameCreationContext class as a subclass of GraphUserCreationContext in my script itself as of now?

HashiCorp Updates Terraform Tool for Azure Cloud

HashiCorp today announced it has updated the instance of Terraform it created to automate the configuration of virtual machines on the Microsoft Azure cloud to give IT teams more granular control.

Version 2.0. of Terraform (TF) AzureRM Provider will allow IT teams to separately configure virtual machines by type for instance of both Windows and Linux.

In addition, version 2.0 of TF AzureRM Provider will allow users to specify custom timeouts for resources. Previously, timeouts were set for one hour by default.

Finally, TF AzureRM Provider 2.0 removes resources, data sources and fields that have been deprecated. TF AzureRM Provider currently provides access to 374 resources and 119 data sources.

Amith Nair, vice president of product marketing for HashiCorp, said the goal is to provide IT teams with a set of tools for automating the configuration of virtual machines on Azure that is more accessible than the tools currently provided by Microsoft.

Nair said HashiCorp is seeing increased adoption of Microsoft Azure, which in turn creates demand for tools that make it easier to deploy virtual machines at scale. In fact, Nair notes that as more workloads move into the public cloud the less resistance there is to IT automation as administrators look for ways to manage IT at what is now unprecedented scale. Of course, many organizations gain their first experience with tools such as Terraform when they first embrace a set of best DevOps practices.

Less clear is how many virtual machines are being configured on top of instances of Windows versus Linux. There is no doubt Microsoft has emerged as the strongest challenger to the dominance of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the public cloud. Much of that success, however, comes from the fact that Microsoft supports distributions of Linux alongside Windows Server on the Azure cloud. There are, of course, many organizations, such as Walmart, that prefer to standardize on Azure simply because they view Amazon to be a competitor. At the same time, however, there are many companies that employ both AWS and Azure.

Nair said most organizations that have adopted more than one cloud tend to manage them in isolation from one another. However, it is expected that one day more organizations will seek to unify the management of multiple clouds within the context of a truly hybrid cloud computing environment as the total cost of cloud computing continues to rise with each additional workload deployed. Naturally, many of those organizations eventually will gravitate toward tools that can be employed across multiple clouds.

In the meantime, whether it?s IT administrators or developers themselves configuring virtual machines in the cloud, it?s thanks to tools such as Terraform that the amount of time and effort required to set up virtual machines in the cloud is now as negligible as it is. The challenge now is not so much finding tools to automate IT as much as it is navigating all the cultural changes that naturally ensue.

Azure devops priority - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure devops priority

5 Reasons to Use Azure DevOps

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Azure DevOps and you may be wondering? what is Azure DevOps, anyway?

Azure DevOps is effectively a rebranding of Microsoft?s Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) which is the online version of Team Foundation Server. That?s all well and good, but what on earth does Azure DevOps/VSTS/TFS do?

Originally a source code management tool where teams could share and work on code collectively, TFS grew to become a platform where development projects could be managed, tested and released.

If you?re reading this and thinking, ?My company is not a dev shop, so why would we be looking at Azure DevOps?? the answer is in the name, DevOps. The advent of DevOps and the concept of infrastructure-as-code has broken down the wall between development and operations and, with it, the adoption of operations by new tools.

Here are 5 reasons to consider Azure DevOps for your organization:

Collaboration

Sharing is at the heart of Azure DevOps. Being able to host and manage code centrally is key to any organizational goal which involves optimization. Even if the only code your team has is a collection of PowerShell or VB scripts that you use to provision accounts or manage servers, storing that code in Azure DevOps will provide a central location from which to manage that code. Versioning code is an important dimension to code management and whether you want to use Team Foundation Version control or GIT, Azure DevOps has you covered.

Work Items

Even if you don?t have any code to manage, you can coordinate the management of your systems with work Items. Work items represent some ?thing?? whether that?s a server, or project risk or system bug is up to you? but the power comes when you create the work items in the context of a process template. Using a process template, you can model your work items around an Agile Framework (which works well for software development) or the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), which works well for systems administration. No matter how you arrange them, work items can help your team divide your complex systems into manageable workloads.

Continuous Integration and Delivery

For software driven organization, Azure DevOps provides a robust platform on which you can deploy your solutions in a pipeline allowing for continuous integration and deployment. Whether you are deploying a solution hosted in Azure or even a solution hosted in AWS, the Azure DevOps CICD pipeline can take your solution from development to delivery.

With an extensive marketplace for plugins and integrations, infrastructure-as-code can also be incorporated into the pipeline such that the ambitious systems administrator can automate far-reaching changes to their environments from a single location.

Open Platform

Azure Devops provides extensive integration with industry and community tools. It is far from the closed-off single vendor solution that was the early version of TFS. As noted above, there is a marketplace which makes hundreds of extensions available, so if Azure Develops doesn?t do something out of the box, odds are a tool exists in the market which does.

In this area of openness, Microsoft has been a clear leader in promoting cooperation even with competitors, which is evident in the marketplace where you can find integration extensions ranging from AWS to Slack to ServiceNow. All of this integration is done with the customer in mind as Azure DevOps seeks to be one of many possible tools in your bag for managing your code development needs.

Become a Software Company

In the beginning of this post, I alluded to an audience which may not be in the business of building software. However, the industry trend is shifting toward the idea presented by Satya Nadella which is ?every company needs to be a software company?.

In this quest to out-perform the competition and achieve differentiation there has been a rise to a new kind of business operating model ? a Cloud Operating Model (COM). The Cloud Operating Model seeks to brining business leaders and technology managers and teams together to specify how technology is implemented throughout a business.

A measure of a successful company is how it is harnessing technology and how that is both an offensive and defensive strategy. This is vital a world where there is a long list of established businesses going from glory to bust. Building a Cloud Operating Model and making it the backbone of the organization?s IT infrastructure will set every business on the right path.

To really succeed, there needs to be more communication and collaboration across the whole enterprise, so we wanted this a guide to stimulate discussion, as future technology decisions are made. When non-technical and technical audiences come together, there will be a mutual understanding of what is on the other?s mind.

Bitbucket azure devops - Эдуард Кабринский

Bitbucket azure devops

[youtube]

Bitbucket azure devops News updates Bitbucket azure devops

Azure DevOps vs Bitbucket

Azure DevOps vs Bitbucket: What are the differences?

Developers describe Azure DevOps as "Services for teams to share code, track work, and ship software". Azure DevOps provides unlimited private Git hosting, cloud build for continuous integration, agile planning, and release management for continuous delivery to the cloud and on-premises. Includes broad IDE support. On the other hand, Bitbucket is detailed as "One place to plan projects, collaborate on code, test and deploy, all with free private repositories". Bitbucket gives teams one place to plan projects, collaborate on code, test and deploy, all with free private Git repositories. Teams choose Bitbucket because it has a superior Jira integration, built-in CI/CD, & is free for up to 5 users.

Azure DevOps belongs to "Integrated Development Environment Tools" category of the tech stack, while Bitbucket can be primarily classified under "Code Collaboration & Version Control".

Some of the features offered by Azure DevOps are:

Agile Tools: kanban boards, backlogs, scrum boards

Reporting: dashboards, widgets, Power BI

Git: free private repositories, pull requests

On the other hand, Bitbucket provides the following key features:

Unlimited private repositories, charged per user

Best-in-class Jira integration

Built-in CI/CD

"Complete and powerful" is the primary reason why developers consider Azure DevOps over the competitors, whereas "Free private repos" was stated as the key factor in picking Bitbucket.

Pandora, CircleCI, and PayPal are some of the popular companies that use Bitbucket, whereas Azure DevOps is used by simplement-e, Proactima Solutions AS, and Poq. Bitbucket has a broader approval, being mentioned in 1735 company stacks & 1450 developers stacks; compared to Azure DevOps, which is listed in 69 company stacks and 65 developer stacks.

Artifactory supports 25+ package types, while Azure supports only Maven, npm, NuGet and Python. You can get Docker and Helm with Azure Container Registry but it?s a separate tool.

Artifactory is fully hybrid - available both for on-premise installations and as SaaS - with full parity between the versions.

With Artifactory you can avoid vendor lock-in - not depending just on one cloud vendor for all of your needs. That also means not being limited to any vendor?s stack for your database, access management, etc. Proxy any remote repository - not just the official ones (like Maven Central and PyPI.org)

Artifactory is optimized for multi-site operations - Supports any network topology, over multiple, geographically distant sites and data centers, through different options for replication including pull, push, event-based and multi-push replication.

Rich metadata & AQL - Artifactory provides full metadata capabilities for all major package formats for both artifacts and folders ? including custom metadata. Users can tag artifacts and folders with searchable properties. Artifactory also collects build information for build artifacts as part of the CI server integration (see below). AQL gives you unprecedented flexibility in how you search for artifacts. It offers a simple way to formulate complex queries that specify any number of search criteria, filters, sorting options and output fields.

Build info - Artifactory stores exhaustive metadata for all build artifacts deployed to it. With this ?bill of materials? it is easy to faithfully reproduce a build, and trace the cause of issues to reduce time to resolution (TTR), even if the build is already in production.

Azure Artifacts pros

if your CI is already built on Azure DevOps, the initial set up for Azure Artifacts may be a bit quicker. The basic functionality of hosting artifacts, so that they can be resolved by other builds will work for you.

Artifacts devops - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Artifacts devops

Use Azure #Artifacts in dotnet restore while #Docker Build

This post run away from the line I want to follow, as I want to write a serie of Docker AKS and Devops articles, but in the meantime I will show a problem I found this week.

The problem

Currently I am building an application based on a Microservices Architecture.

I have a very basic structure with Web Apis built with .NET Core with their associated Dockerfiles and I am defining the CI processes in Azure Devops.

We are using Azure Artifacts in the company where we store some packages in order to share them in projects, and my Api use that private feed.

Let me share the initial Dockerfile and the azure-pipeline.yml.

If we run a docker build with the previous file (in our local environment or in our Azure Build Pipeline) we obtain a 401 error due to we didn?t set up the Azure Arifacts feed.

Doing a small research I get into the following choices:

Solution(1) Did not work

Looks like the most promising one and the cleanest, using Azure Artifact Credentials.

Steps for this version:

Modify Our docker file including Args to consume the Feed endpoint and a PAT (Personal Access Token) previously defined in Azure Devops with access to the Package Management.

Modify the docker file to download and run the sh for set up the Nuget Credential Provider, and define the environment variables: NUGET_CREDENTIALPROVIDER_SESSIONTOKENCACHE_ENABLED and VSS_NUGET_EXTERNAL_FEED_ENDPOINTS. The last one is a json where will set up the feed and the PAT.

In the Azure Pipeline set up a variable group inside the Library, where we will store the Artifact Feed and the PAT, and will allow access to all Build processes.

Modyfy the build definition yml to add parameters to the build definition adding the variables from the group.

All done, and still doesn?t work.

Soluci?n (2) It works!

After the previous failure, I found another alternative that does not seem clearer than previous, but It works.

This solution is based on building a Nuget.Config file on the fly consuming the variables defined in the build process.

Let?s take a look on the Docker file and the yml, and expain them:

We have 3 arguments defined: ARTIFACTS_ENDPOINT, ACCESS_TOKEN and USER. We will use this args to setup the Credentials for our Feed.

Before running the ?dotnet restore? command, and in the same work directory, we run an Echo command redirecting to the Nuget.Config file.

As you can see in the file we interpolate the arguments in the file.

Let?s take a look now in the CI yml file:

We allow the use of the group variable defined in the library, and like in the solution 1 we pass the varibles to the docker build process.
