<p>Organisations always want to be agile and more efficient. However, traditionally the functional silos of operations and development have poor intertwining relations. The initiative called DevOps that brings together the two teams on a collaborative platform makes sense in many ways for businesses to grow.While this reinforces the integration between two teams, the approach also steers clear of dysfunctions that arise out of the silo culture.</p>
<p>Most large organisations are already leveraging it to ensure continuous delivery with enhanced collaboration. As against the orthodox development methodology where the focus used to beon stability, DevOps aims at bringing applications faster without compromising on performance.</p>
<p>The key benefit with DevOps is high quality applications at reduced costs associated with fixing bugs and applying patches later. It is more of a collaborative approach where the IT operations and application life cycle development and management are tightly coupled resulting in improved communicationa mong peers, establishing a more cohesive learning environment within the organisation. '60 per cent of data center application failures are the result of faulty deployment and uncoordinated changes,' says a report. DevOps standardises coordination between the teams, thus bringing in agility toorganisations with reduced gaps between.</p>
<p>The initiative also standardises the coordination of development and operations, which results in accelerated delivery of products.</p>
<p><strong>The cultural shift<br /></strong>The ultimate objective of DevOps is to bring in agility, reducing the product cycle-time from idea inception and delivering the value toyour users. So, by deploying DevOps, enterprises can automate continuous delivery, and facilitate real-time collaboration betweendevelopment and IT.</p>
<p>This also helps enterprises establish standardand protocols to reduce product lifecycles. DevOps is not really about processes but about cultural shifts, says MS Kiran, Director ?DevOps Technology, [24]7. When asked why IT managers should take cognizance of DevOps, hesays, ?IT mangers can no longer stick to just provisioning ofinfrastructure and maintaining the same.? He adds, ?Currently,most development happens in agile methodology; IT shouldget involved from day one on technologies to be used for provisioning the infrastructure and deployments.?IT should be around to troubleshoot and offer a faster feedback mechanism which will contribute to real agile development, Kiran adds.</p>
<p>In today?s rapidly changing world, one of the key aspects of software is building generic products, and pivoting these to numerous customers till the right segment is found. The sameis true for enterprises where one given solution does not fit the requirements of all customer segments until it is tweaked to do so.</p>
<p>Therefore, development teams are required to be geared up with multiple skills including knowledge of multiple programming platforms, test first and develop later attitude, and a deep understanding of design, says Jayanth Bagare, Product Owner,Custom Development & Strategic Engagements, SAP Labs India.</p>
<p>They should be accustomed to continuous integration withthe markets either through the sales team or with the customer directly, and deliver in extremely fast turnaround time. From an operations perspective, getting simpler legal definitions, pricing, customer release and support is critical, as today?scustomers are flooded with choice.</p>
<p>Plus, if the conversation is not simplified, the risk of losing customers is pertinent.</p>
<p><strong>Cross functional visibility<br /></strong>The lack of right resources in a crunch situation is a problem facedby many project and product managers. At the same time, there are developers who have some amountof free bandwidth at various points of time, says Vidyasagar Reddy, a Senior Developer with SAP Labs India.</p>
<p>DevOps helps keeps employee engagement and motivation high, as it allows for cross team visibility and new learning, says the developer who is a part of the DevOps project.</p>
<p>Development and operations teams can benefit from insights into each other?sprocesses, and measure progress. Getting to know work priorities on the other side help steer clear of confusion, thus leading to efficiency.</p>
<p><strong>The role of IT<br /></strong> Having a strategy in place for implementing DevOps isimportant. Instead of thinking how IT can change the world, you should think of how business situations enforce changes in IT systems. So, the IT team has lead to make sure everything isin place to embark on DevOps. It has to ensure eliminating the gaps between skills and workforce availability.</p>

<p><strong>Microsoft Azure DevOps</strong>, previously known as Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS), is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution, which helps software development teams in building, testing, and deploying applications. It contains five major services: <strong>Source Control, Testing, Pipelines, Artifacts, and Work Item Tracking</strong>, which give the teams the necessary tools to complete the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) of the project.</p>
<p>After many years of using it at Hexacta, we have seen excellent results in the productivity of our teams and in the quality of products that are built. Thanks to this, we really recommend this tool for your development teams.</p>
<h2>Tracking team?s work</h2>
<p>One of the great advantages of this platform is the <strong>ability to track and manage the work of your teams.</strong></p>
<p>It is easy to start with and have an excellent user experience which your teams will enjoy. However, the configuration piece can be a bit overwhelming. There are too many concepts and relationships to learn, and it is easy to get lost.</p>
<p>With this article, we hope to help you with that. In this infographic, we explain the model of <strong>Work Item Tracking</strong> in Azure DevOps. If you are familiar with Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD), this will make a lot of sense to you. Even though the Microsoft documentation for this platform is great and has a lot of information, we were not able to find this type of explanation of the Work Item Tracking model. This is our humble contribution to the community by filling that gap.</p>

<h2>The big picture first</h2>

<li>In a Microsoft Azure DevOps subscription, <strong>you can have one or many Team Projects.</strong></li>

<li><strong>A Team Project could contain one or many Teams</strong>. The <em>Team</em> concept helps you organize the tasks of a group of people working in a specific area of your organization.</li>

<li>The Process defines the work item types and the backlog levels that you will have.</li>

<li>Both areas and iterations are defined in a <strong>hierarchical structure,</strong> like a tree of a parent and child?s nodes.</li>
<li>When you create a Team inside a Team Project, you need to define which subset of areas and which subset of iterations that particular Team will work on. This is something important because that defines what that team will be able to see in their boards.</li>
<li>Each team will have two boards: the <strong>Sprint board</strong> and the <strong>Kanban board.</strong></li>
<li>The Sprint board will show all iteration level work item types, which are in the current iteration of the team and are in one of the areas assigned to the team. For its part, the Kanban board shows all active work items of a given level (portfolio or requirements), which are in one of the areas assigned to the team.</li>

<p>Before migrating the TFS data into Azure DevOps, it?s a good idea to eliminate any data that you don?t need to move into the new service. Ten years of TFS has accumulated a huge amount of code, and I really only need to bring my latest repos forward.</p>
<p>This part will show which data to eliminate and the quickest way to do it.</p>
<p>If you missed the earlier posts, start here.</p>
<h2>Team Projects</h2>
<p>In my case, I had about 50 Team Project Collections. Team Project Collections each contain their own project template, code repository, and work items.</p>
<p>I had about 50 of these because we imported from SourceSafe over 10 years ago and the import process set it up this way. We actually only use one of these projects on an ongoing basis. Over the last 10 years, we migrated the code for active projects into this main project so we could share work items and project templates.</p>
<p>Because of this, I have about 50 extra projects that are old projects that are rarely (if ever) worked on. None of them have their own work items. I don?t want to bring any of these projects into the Azure DevOps service.</p>
<p>The future plan is that if we need to access the code for one of these projects, we?ll import it as a new GIT repository into our Azure DevOps Service project.</p>
<h3>Delete Team Projects</h3>
<p>So, for Step 1, delete the unnecessary Team Projects. This is most easily done through the Web UI for TFS.</p>
<p><strong>Make sure you are on the Staging TFS Web UI!</strong></p>
<p>In the Web UI, you need to access the Collection?s Settings. In the breadcrumb trail, at the top of the UI, click the root (mine is DefaultCollection). Then click Admin Settings at the bottom left corner. This will show you the full list of projects in your collection. Click the ellipsis next to each project (except for the ones you want to keep) and click Delete.</p>
<p>If any of these projects have a large code-base, this will take a long time. One of my big ones took over an hour, so be prepared to wait.</p>
<h2>Team Foundation Version Control</h2>
<p>Before GIT, we had TFVC. TFVC was the only source control that TFS supported in the beginning, so if you?ve been using it for long, you probably have lingering TFVC repositories.</p>
<p>We now exclusively use GIT, so I don?t want to migrate any of the TFVC repositories to Azure DevOps Service. If you are using TFVC, you can migrate these repositories? but I recommend you move to GIT anyway because it?s awesome.</p>
<p>My current project that I?m migrating contains both GIT and TFVC, so I want to purge the TFVC before migration. You can?t actually destroy the TFVC repository, it is there forever? but you can clear everything inside of it.</p>
<h3>Delete Workspaces</h3>
<p>First, delete all the workspaces. TFS won?t let you delete the code until the attached workspaces are gone.</p>
<p>The best way I found to do this was using a blast from the past: TFS Sidekicks!</p>
<p>TFS Sidekicks is a handy tool for TFVC but has fallen away as GIT has taken over. However, it still works in Azure DevOps Server 2019.</p>
<p>Install it onto your staging server and run it. Go to the Workspaces tab, and highlight and delete all the workspaces. Easy!</p>
<h3>Delete Code</h3>
<p>Now for the code. The best way to delete the code from the database for good is with a command line ?tf destroy?. This will eliminate the code completely from the database.</p>
<p>It is also very important that you include the /startcleanup parameter as that will tell the database to remove it immediately. Otherwise, it can take up to five days to be removed.</p>
<p>There is one caveat, that the tf destroy command will fail if it takes too long to run. So, if you have an enormous amount of code, you will need to do it in smaller chunks.</p>
<p>I had a ton of branches persisted in TFVC, so I had to do it one branch at a time. It took a while, so maybe put on a TV show while you do this?</p>
<p>The tf destroy command needs to be run from the Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio. Type that into Start to find it.</p>

<p style="clear: both"><img style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 5px 0;" src="https://img.colabug.com/2019/03/bb888234c0bbe0094fb7b0c6c2b25d5c.png" /> Its always a good idea on your project to keep your project documentation up to date, I personally like to make use of the Wiki inside Azure Devops, we use Azure Devops almost exclusively at work now.</p>
<p>On the wiki we have a page which documents the Azure Builds and Release pipelines, so that people can get an idea of what the individual builds are for and explain the steps within the Release pipelines, for the most part this is really straightforward, but for new people joining the team it just makes life easier to have this kind of thing written down and explained.</p>
<p>On that note I wanted to show you how to add the status badges for each build to your Wiki, it took me a wee while to find this so I thought I?d blog it because I?ll forget and so other people can see how to do it.</p>
<p>An example of the kind of thing I am talking about is below: ?</p>

<p>So how do you find the Markdown for the badges so that you can add this to your wiki or elsewhere?</p>
<p>If you browse to your build(s) for your projects, click on the 3 ellipses on the right hand side, next to the Edit and Queue buttons and then choose Status Badge</p>

<p>Microsoft Azure DevOps is a great tool that allows you to manage your Agile projects. It allows you to easily track most of the information a scrum master or product owner are currently interested in, such as your product backlog, sprint backlog, burn down chart, and more.</p>
<blockquote><p>If you're new to Agile project management, I recommend you have a look at a book I recently published on this topic called Agile Office 365. Besides providing you with an overview of Agile project management using the Scrum methodology, it provides you with lots of information on how to manage your Office 365 projects using these methods.</p> </blockquote>
<p>Some of the information tracked in Azure DevOps, such as the sprint burndown chart and current sprint backlog are often of interest to the clients to know how the sprint work is progressing. Though you can extend Azure DevOps access to youir clients, this is not always desirable. In this 2-part blog, I will discuss how I was able to bring key information from AzureDevOps into a SharePoint dashboard.</p>

<h4>Determine if it's the start of a new sprint</h4>
<p>To know the start of a new sprint, I needed to establish the start date of the of the project and duration of each sprint (3 weeks, 21 calendar days). With that information, I used a Compose function that would calculate the remainder of dividing the number of days since the project began to today.</p>

<p>The current pipeline</h2></p>
<p>There are four services to the current pipeline: Github, Appveyor, Octopus, Azure.</p>
<ul>
<li>You push to Github</li>
<li>The appveyor.yml file in the repository is found by Appveyor. Appveyor builds the solution and runs the tests. The deploy is skipped as you're not on the master or dev branches.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>You push to Github on the dev or master branches, via a pull request.</li>
<li>The appveyor.yml file in the repository is found by Appveyor. Appveyor builds the solution, runs the tests, and runs the octopus-deploy Powershell script. This creates an Octopus package, pushes it to the Octopus server and then creates and deploys a release.</li>
<li>The Octopus project deployed then runs a deploy to a web app on Azure. The web app name is defined in the project variables.</li>
<li>The Octopus step is from an Azure web app template.</li>
</ul>
<p>The only magical part to this file is it copies StaticPlatforms to Platforms and runs a deploy script.</p>
<p>There are currently 3 environments:</p>
<p>The deployment pipeline pushes straight to the dev environment, which has no deployment slots. You are then expected to manually continue the workflow through to QA-Staging and QA-Live. These two environments could be duplicated for a live environment very easily.</p>
<p>The project variables in Octopus are tied down to these environments. You can deploy to a staging slot in Azure by using webapp-name(slot name) as the target web app name. For example impactful-qa(staging) .</p>
<p>This has a similar deployment pipeline setup, but no CI as there is no C# in the repository. You should deploy this project after the platform deployment, as the platform project will wipe the entire root directory of the web app.</p>
<p>This project is setup so that Octopus package is extracted into /platforms/</p>
<p>Octopus Azure account</h3></p>
<p>You need a subscriber id, app id, tenant id (from Azure AD). The links below tell you where to find them, they're in the subscriptions section, web app roles section and AD section in Azure.</p>

<p>We'll use an <strong>azure-pipelines.yml</strong> file at the root of the repository. Get this file to build the Node.js application using CI (Continuous Integration) Build.</p>
<p>Follow the instructions in <strong>Create your build pipeline</strong> to create a build pipeline for your node application.</p>
<p><strong>Steps:</strong></p>
<p>The agent pool needs to be selected on <strong>Microsoft-hosted agents</strong>. This is the VM where the build runs. If the hosted agent is not working, use the self-hosted agent machine as a host.</p>
<p>Publish the test results to Azure pipelines or TFS when tests are executed to provide complete test reports and analytics. Use the test runner that supports the required test results format. Some specific result formats include JUnit, NUnit, and Visual Studio Test (TRX). This task will generate the JUnit XML formats, and Azure DevOps Build will use this XML file in its build task to grab the test results and publish to the dashboard summary of the build.</p>
