I would like to ask you about using Team foundation Server as bug tracking system.

Already we are using Countersoft Gemini, this is one of many bug tracking application.

Because we started to use repository and build from Team Foundation Server, we consider also migrating bug tracking system to TFS work items.

What do you think about this?

Can TFS be utilized as complete bug tracking system with time logging and issue managements functionality?

Do you have any experiences with migration from other bug tracker to TFS?

Thanks for answers

Answers

VSTS work item tracking is definitely worth evaluating because the work items become part of the whole development lifecycle, you can assign each check-in to the work item it relates to, determine which work items are included in each build, etc.

The work item templates are also completely customisable so you can define exactly what information you want to capture and the rules that apply. Microsoft do ship two sets of templates out-of-the-box though, one for Agile development and one for CMMI development.

However, the default templates don't really cover tracking time so you may need to make modifications to do this.

TFS is a real power house when it comes to tracking issues, impediments, etc. in terms of a Team Project solution, but using the process templates that ship in the box you may not necessarily find all the features you are looking for, i.e. time management and tracking. I would, however, suggest that you evaluate the process templates . you can find reference to more on accentient.com/widgets.aspx and determine if any of them fit your requirements, or would require minimal customisation.

We have been using TFS as a bug tracking system for a while, both as part of solutions and as a unit, where we created a Team Project for just the work item tracking. Apart from some challenges, i.e. lack of time tracking, no current support for hierarchical work items, etc. we are very happy with TFS as a bug tracking system.

I did a presentation at the Queensland VSTS User Group a couple of months ago, you can download the PowerPoint slides if you'd like to see what customisation of work items is possible:

Tfs backlog - Эдуард Кабринский

Tfs backlog

[youtube]

Tfs backlog Top news stories Tfs backlog

How to Create a Product Backlog: An Agile Experience

The product backlog is really the core deliverable that maintains and evolves the requirements in an agile environment. Ownership by the agile business analyst (or a product owner with BA responsibilities) is critical.

A product backlog contains a complete list of all requirements under consideration (written using a user story syntax ? more on that below), rank ordered, and matrixed with other key characteristics that facilitate planning and prioritization.

Let?s look at how the product backlog emerged for one particular project and how decisions were made about what to include in the product backlog.

Switching from Traditional to Agile ? And Getting Started on the Product Backlog

This project was initiated with a traditional approach. The business analyst created a fairly traditional scope statement and features list. The features list was fundamentally business-driven. When I started work on the project we had not yet defined how we?d manage requirements communication with the out-sourced development team.

At the project kick-off with the development team, we reviewed a fairly final draft of the scope statement and started discussions around detailed requirements communication. The development team is part of an agile shop, so regardless of who did it, a product backlog and user stories would be created. The team agreed that it made sense for the business analyst to own creating and maintaining the product backlog and user stories.

Blending Requirements and Design in the Product Backlog

Identifying a user story blends elements of requirements and design. As I worked through my list, driven by my understanding of what the business wanted, I kept running up against the question of, ?How will it make sense to build this in a delivery cycle??

To balance these two perspectives, I drafted the product backlog, then we tore it apart as a team into deliverable nuggets of functionality. For us, the question the product backlog answered was, ?Given what we know about scope, what is the best way to deliver in an agile environment?? So, we were blending agile with more traditional methodologies a bit to the benefit of the business team (that cares about scope) and the technology team (that has optimized their development process to deliver in sprints).

Using the User Story Syntax in the Product Backlog

The second challenge I encountered really centered around the syntax of a user story. In the past, I?ve been an ?ability to? analyst?never again. This time I used the following syntax to write requirements in my original scope statement.

?[Somebody] does [something] with [ some information ]?.

This provides a much more powerful way to capture features and also ensures you are capturing all aspects of the feature. And the standard user story format?

?As a [user], I can [ do something ] so that [perceived benefit].?

These were surprisingly similar. I really played around with the benefits statement and found that sometimes it added real value to the story and other times real confusion. I decided to consider it optional for this project.

But the standard user story format was missing the ?some information? component that had really helped flesh out many of my requirements. Therefore, most of the product backlog ended up in the following blended format (items in parens are optional):

?As a [user] (with some information), I can [do something] (with some information) (for some perceived benefit).?

Evolving the Product Backlog

Over the course of the project, the product backlog continued to evolve and was ?groomed.? As we drilled into the requirements behind some of the earlier user stories, we discovered they were bigger than anticipated. We broke apart user stories into two or more product backlog items. On occasion, we combined stories.

As new stories were added, we assigned them story points (a kind of estimate) and a general priority. We rank ordered the next 20 or so user stories. As stories were targeted for a specific sprint, we added that information.

The backlog became a tool to scope and re-scope the project and it proved exceedingly flexible. Since we were using Team Foundation Server (TFS) to manage our user stories, I could download the complete product backlog and with some simple formatting in Excel share it with the business team. Then I could input my changes and update the user stories. Eventually, we even got the syncing functionality to work so I could make updates in Excel that were reflected back in TFS.

Managing a product backlog is a key way for the business analyst to add value to an agile project. It?s a wonderful tool for keeping business needs in sync with development deliverables and for streamlining how the requirements get managed throughout the development process.

Rancher devops - Кабринский Эдуард

Rancher devops

[youtube]

Rancher devops Latest national news in english Rancher devops

Manage Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) with Rancher

Containers and Kubernetes are getting popular and enterprises are moving their monolithic applications to micro service architecture. There for enterprise use Docker, Kubernetes & etc, to run their micro service application. With the demand and popularity gain for container orchestration to manage thousands of containers, Kubernetes has the biggest market share and its the accepted container platform for many organization.

With the increasing popularity to Kubernetes cloud providers such as Azure, AWS, GCP introduce managed Kubernetes service for customers. There for some organizations use multi cloud providers to deploy applications and services.

To manage Kubernetes clusters in multi cloud scenario organization faced a difficulty of managing different consoles and tools. Rancher Kubernetes Management is a tool we can use to manage all your clusters from On-Premise to cloud from one console.

Lets see in action how to configure Rancher and Add AKS cluster to it.

Before get started following prerequisites are needed.

Azure Account ? Deploy Rancher & and AKS

kubectl ? command line tool to interact with Kubernetes

Azure CLI or PowerShell ? Deploy ARM Template

VS Code ? Code Editor

Deploy Rancher VM Deployment

To deploy the Rancher VM, we use Azure ARM template. In ARM template we specify the resources need to create a Ubuntu VM and for installation of Docker we use Azure VM extensions. ARM template has two files, RancherVM.json & Rancher-Node-Parameters.json.

RancherVM.json file contains the resources deployed to Azure. It includes resources such as Virtual Network, VM, NIC etc.

Rancher-Node-Parameters.json file contains any parameters need for resources define in RancherVM.json

Following is the ARM templates for Rancher VM deployment.

To deploy the ARM templates we can use following Azure CLI commands

After deployment succeed we can access the Rancher Management Tool using public IP of the Azure VM or Domain name.

First thing we need to do is change administrators password.

After setup the password Rancher will prompt the server URL as below. This URL can be used to

Next it will load the Rancher dashboard as below, currently its empty and we?ll add a existing AKS cluster to it in upcoming steps.

Click ?Add Cluster? to get start with adding existing or create new cluster

Select ?Import? as above to add clusters already created.

As above mentioned first we need to create ClusterRoleBinding to user account of the AKS with cluster-admin ClusterRole attached (Step 1)

Next we need to run kubectl YAML manifest (Step 2) to create relevant resources need for communication with Rancher. Bellow are the resources created by above YAML manifest.

Namespace

ServiceAccount

ClusterRoleBinding

ClusterRole

Deployment

DemonSet

Next we can verify the Deployment and DemonSet is created by running following Command

After few minutes we can see the data are coming to Rancher dashboard as shown below. Time may very based on the cluster size.

All are set and as an administrator or developer we can deploy application and manage, AKS cluster as we need. One additional configuration we can do is enable monitoring for resources. Click ?Enable Monitoring to see live metrics? in top right corner.

Next we need to configure the monitoring parameters as below

Above I use persistent storage to store Grafana and Prometheus data. Configure to store data retention for 12 hours.

After configurations completed dashboard will update as below.

We can click Grafana icon to open a Grafana dashboard for metrics.

Additional we can see metrics of the cluster as below.

Azure devops calendar - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops calendar

[youtube]

Azure devops calendar National news headlines Azure devops calendar

Azure Advent Calendar: Azure Devops Pipelines

This blog post is part of Azure Advent Calendar do check out some of the other videos and blog posts. The YouTube channel can be found here

Azure Pipelines are one of my favourite features of Azure DevOps, so it was the ideal topic for my first video. I am not going to duplicate the content from the video here so go and watch it if you haven?t already, but if you have question about anything I said do add a comment below.

The Github and Azure DevOps accounts mentioned are both public so feel free to browse around the content if it helps you understand the concepts.

I deploy to three free Azure Web Apps and I will keep them running for the time being. Usually I would use standard edition web apps and make use of slots, however the principle of deploying to a slot and a website is the same, you just need to tick the deploy to slot option.

To deploy to the Virtual Machine there is a bit more magic involved that is not mentioned in the video.

The following powershell needs to be run as an administrator, this connects you VM to Azure DevOps and can be found in the Deployment Groups section of pipelines under register.

$ErrorActionPreference="Stop";If(-NOT ([Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal][Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent() ).IsInRole( [Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole] ?Administrator?))< throw "Run command in an administrator PowerShell prompt">;If($PSVersionTable.PSVersion -lt (New-Object System.Version("3.0")))< throw "The minimum version of Windows PowerShell that is required by the script (3.0) does not match the currently running version of Windows PowerShell." >;If(-NOT (Test-Path $env:SystemDrive\'azagent'))<mkdir $env:SystemDrive\'azagent'>; cd $env:SystemDrive\'azagent'; for($i=1; $i -lt 100; $i++)<$destFolder="A"+$i.ToString();if(-NOT (Test-Path ($destFolder)))<mkdir $destFolder;cd $destFolder;break;>>; $agentZip="$PWD\agent.zip";$DefaultProxy=[System.Net.WebRequest]::DefaultWebProxy;[email protected]();$securityProtocol+=[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol;$securityProtocol+=[Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls12;[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol=$securityProtocol;$WebClient=New-Object Net.WebClient; $Uri='https://vstsagentpackage.azureedge.net/agent/2.160.1/vsts-agent-win-x64-2.160.1.zip';if($DefaultProxy -and (-not $DefaultProxy.IsBypassed($Uri)))<$WebClient.Proxy= New-Object Net.WebProxy($DefaultProxy.GetProxy($Uri).OriginalString, $True);>; $WebClient.DownloadFile($Uri, $agentZip);Add-Type -AssemblyName System.IO.Compression.FileSystem;[System.IO.Compression.ZipFile]::ExtractToDirectory( $agentZip, "$PWD");.\config.cmd --deploymentgroup --deploymentgroupname "VM" --agent $env:COMPUTERNAME --runasservice --work '_work' --url 'https://dev.azure.com/azureadventcalendar/' --projectname 'AzureAdventCalendar'; Remove-Item $agentZip;

That is all you need to do to your VM, you don?t even need to install IIS, the deployment steps do that for you. I did need to manually install the .net Core IIS module because my code requires it.

The application I use in the video is based off the Blazor template that is part of Visual Studio 2019. Create a new Blazor applicaton and you should get a very similar application with a table of temperatures, and a counter. I tweaked this slightly to make it more Christmas themed. The snow is an old javascript file that i added to the page. If anyone knows how to do that in pure c# blazor I would love to know.

If you enjoyed this video let me know as I am considering recording some more in 2020 so watch this space!

Devops jira - Эдуард Кабринский

Devops jira

[youtube]

Devops jira Current news headlines Devops jira

Jira Integration with Azure DevOps (VSTS)

Jira and Azure DevOps (VSTS) integration ensures there is no scope for communication gaps or miscommunication between project management and development teams.

Jira and Azure DevOps (VSTS) Integration Overview

In an Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) ecosystem, the choice of systems and the collaboration between the cross-functional teams play a great role. While the choice of systems impacts the productivity of a team, the cross-functional collaboration helps the teams get complete context of the business requirements.

Best-of-breed systems such as Jira and Azure DevOps (VSTS) bring rich functionalities to the ecosystem. By integrating Azure DevOps (VSTS) with Jira, enterprises can seamlessly manage product development. The developers using Jira will have clear visibility into the exact feature requirements and real-time access to any changes/enhancements made to the requirements. On the other hand, Azure DevOps (VSTS) users will have complete view of development of a requirement that is progressing.

How Azure DevOps (VSTS) and Jira integration is beneficial for an enterprise

Access to all test cases, defects, and QA plan

Trace the requirement breakdown completely ? access the features, stories, tasks associated with the requirement

Developers are always up-to-date on feature requirements and associated updates

Track the estimated and actual development efforts

Get complete context of the business requirement and receive real-time updates when there is a change in the plan

Coordinate on the delivery timelines seamlessly with concurrent updates on changes

With Azure DevOps (VSTS) and Jira integration, enterprises can:

How OpsHub Integration Manager integrates Jira and Azure DevOps (VSTS)

OpsHub Integration Manager integrates Azure DevOps (VSTS) and Jira bidirectionally. It ensures that all historical and current data is available to each user, in that user?s preferred system, with full context, in real-time. All ?requirements? from Azure DevOps (VSTS) automatically synchronize to Jira where they are broken down to ?stories?. The completion of the story and the status of test results against it automatically synchronizes to Azure DevOps (VSTS).

Azure pipelines conditions - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Azure pipelines conditions

[youtube]

Azure pipelines conditions Top news stories Azure pipelines conditions

Azure Pipelines | Variable conditions

Scenario

Let?s imagine that, whatever reason you have, you have a build definition on Azure Devops that is running using Azure Pipelines through an azure-pipelines.yml file and should have conditional step execution based, uppon others, on a variable value that is settable on Pipeline Run time.

How do you should configure your pipeline?

Setup

Let?s start from the empty template that Microsoft bring us from their azure-pipelines-yaml GitHub repository.

Just remove the unnecessary parts of the template? and let?s start!

Conditions

Regardless the official documentation is pretty complete, there are some concepts to have clear.

By default, any step, job or stage is executed after the previous one succeeded.

But, when you want to add some kind of logic to your build definition, and select when to execute a given step based on a value, you should add the condition property on your desired step.

Be carefull, as the file format is yaml, the leading spaces should be exactly two (2) in this case.

Variables

Any Azure Pipeline definition have, by default, a lot of process variables that can be used on your pipeline execution steps only referencing variable name enclosed in $() .

When you want to create a custom variable, you have to setup it from the azure pipeline edition form. To add any new custom variable (as parameter) to your pipeline, just go to **Pipelines / / Edit > Variables**.

Tip: Please, don?t ignore the naming info and suggestions provided on this form, as they are very important when you want to reference your variables from the azure-pipeline.yml file.

In example, let?s declare HelloDevs variable. This variable will be true or false , and will be used on the pipeline to execute a new step that will ?say? (write on the stdout with echo command) hello to all devs in the world.

The and() method allow to evaluate all the parameters are true

The succeded() method evaluates if the previous step has been completed successfully

The eq() method evaluates that the first parameter value is equal to the second one

The $true expression converts the true value into boolen, that allow the eq() method to compare any string received ( "true" , or "True" , or "TRUE" ?)

So, here the conditions is:

Ensure that the previous step is succeded and the HelloDevs variable is true

To reference a variable, in this case HelloDevs , you have two options:

Reference it through variable['name'] or

Reference it through variable.name

Use it

Just run your pipeline, and edit the variable clicking on it, change the variable value and click Run.

And the result of this execution, with the HelloDevs variable set to true , will be something like:

Azure devops queries - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure devops queries

[youtube]

Azure devops queries Top news stories of the day Azure devops queries

Scheduled Work Item Query

Quadrotech Solutions AG

Azure DevOps Schedule Work Item Query

Introduction

The Goal of this extension was to keep as much functionality as possible inside Azure DevOps / Team Foundation Server. We have opted to realize this by using a standard Build Pipeline in Azure DevOps / Team Foundation Server as our "Scheduling" Engine.

The actual functionality is realized as a Build Pipeline Task called "Scheduled Work Item Query". This task executes a query that is saved in either the "My Queries" or "Shared Queries" folders, and sends the results by e-mail using either SendGrid or standard SMTP.

Setup

Introduction

Setup of the Task should be straight forward. You should probably create a new Build Pipeline, and then add as many "Scheduled Work Item Query" Tasks as needed. Each Task is able to send a single Query to multiple people. The Build Pipeline does not have to live in the same Project as the Query.

You should then add a Schedule Trigger to the Build Pipline, that it gets executed automatically whenever you need it to.

Endpoints

SendGrid Endpoint

The SendGrid endpoint can be used if you want to send e-mails using SendGrid. All you need is a SendGrid API Token with the permissions to send e-mails. For Documentation about this, see here

SMTP Endpoint

The SMTP endpoint can be used to send e-mails using standard SMTP interfaces. It supports common TLS configurations as well as authentication.

Azure Repos / Team Foundation Server Endpoint

This Endpoint is needed when you want to send a query that exists only in someone's "My Queries" folder. It is not needed if you want to send out queries living in the "Shared Queries" folder.

Shared Queries

Shared queries can be scheduled without any other authentication, it uses the authentication/authorization of the Agent to connect to Azure DevOps Service / Azure DevOps Server.
