<h1>What are VSTS Deployment agents and how to install them?</h1>
<p>Before we start understanding Deployment Agents, we need to first understand why we need them .</p>
<p><strong>Deployment agents</strong> are nothing but services used to connect the Azure DevOps with the Target Machines under a specified Deployment Group .</p>
<p>A Deployment Group in VSTS or Azure DevOps as we know it now is nothing but a logical collection of target machines where you want to run your deployment. At the end you may want to have Deployment Groups for each of your environment like Prod, Dev or Test etc.</p>
<p>You can define the Deployment Groups in the the Azure Pipelines, and install the agent on each server in the group (For this you need to run a PowerShell scrip on to the Machine with admin rights).</p>
<p>After your target servers are all set, they appear in the Deployment Groups tab. The list indicates if a server is available (Online, Healthy, Failing or Offline), the tags you assigned to each server (let?s say for Test you can tag them as ?test-servers?), and the latest deployment to each server (with status).</p>
<p>The tags you assign allow you to limit deployment to specific servers when the deployment group is used in a Deployment group job. Tags are each limited to 256 characters, but there is no limit to the number of tags you can use. You can also manage the security for a deployment group by assigning policies.</p>
<p><strong>Steps to install Deployment Group Agent on a server:</strong> </p>

<li>Login to Azure DevOps > select <strong>Projects</strong> ><b><em>?Your Project Name?</em></b><em>></em><strong>Pipelines</strong></li>
<li>Select +New</strong> to create a new group <img style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 5px 0;" src="https://thecloudtheoriesbyprpand.files.wordpress.com/2019/03/deploy.png" /></li>

This doesn?t mean that we should refine every single <strong>work item</strong> in the backlog, but we should focus to have finely groomed work items, that will be sufficient always for next two coming sprints.</p>
<p>So as the timing to deliver work items is getting closed. We should be more certain that the top work items are going to be delivered soon. In that time, we would definitely want to understand requirements better. With higher level of details of what is actually expected from the work or delivery perspective.</p>
<p>This is a great opportunity to get inside the head of <strong>Product Owner.</strong> And ask the questions in order to understand <strong>requirements</strong> in a detailed way. That will help the team to deliver expected result.</p>

During our development, we?ll be adding new work items or removing existing ones, if they become obsolete. The more we?ll be approaching to the work items with higher priority, the more detailed and refined they will be.</p>

<p>There are many benefits from capturing requirements as <strong>User Stories.</strong> And one among them is certainly the ability to define requirements from perspective that will bring value for the end user. Refining the requirements has a significant meaning for delivering working piece of product or service and this refinement is usually done in the stages when development of this items is getting closer to actual beginning of the work or of development. In Scrum we usually use some successful techniques for defining the requirement?s size and content. I will explain more in details about requirements size and estimations in my next post.</p>

<p>The Serverless Framework has a powerful built-in variable system that helps secure your sensitive data and can be used to keep even the most complex configuration simple and manageable. We have pretty comprehensive coverage of all of the features of the variable system in our documentation, but when combined together in creative ways these features enable some extremely powerful workflows and real world use cases.</p>
<p>In this article we?ll explore some ideas on how you can use these features to better automate your serverless operations.</p>
<h1>Dynamic Configuration</h1>
<p>You can use the variable system to dynamically generate configuration data for your config files with the help of JS scripts, which is normally not supported by YAML/JSON. Some examples include generating random numbers, dates, doing mathematical computation, or fetching remote data. Let?s look at two of these examples..</p>
<h3>Generating Random ID</h3>
<p>Let?s say you want to create a bucket with a unique id attached to the name. It wouldn?t be possible to generate that random id inside of serverless.yml without the magic of programming. You can utilize the variable system for this use case like this:</p>
<h3>Fetching Remote Data</h3>
<p>You can go even further with JS scripts by working with promises and async operations, which is supported out of the box by the Framework. That means you can fetch data needed for your configuration from any remote source you want.</p>
<p>For example, if you need to use your Github first name as the function name, you can fetch that data from the Github API using a vars.js file like this:</p>
<p>Then in serverless.yml you can do something like this:</p>
<p>The use cases of this feature are limitless! You can fetch global config from DynamoDB, get sensitive data from KMS, or interact with your own API. Whatever is needed by your application.</p>
<h2>Predeployment Processing</h2>
<p>A super creative usage of the variable system is to use it without having any actual variables at all! One use case of that is doing some pre-deployment processing as a build script, maybe to prepare or build certain AWS resources that your service depends on or make some changes to your config files. This works out of the box because processing variables happens at the beginning on Serverless initialization. You?ll just need to write your script and reference it wherever needed, most likely in the custom property of your serverless.yml .</p>
<p>Let?s take a look at an example. Say you want to control which AWS account to use based on certain logical conditions. You can make use of the variable system to setup the correct value for AWS_PROFILE environment variable for you before deployment. All you have to do is just reference a JS variables file that contain that logic. So in serverless.yml</p>
<p>Then in vars.js, you can write your logic:</p>
<p>This way, vars.js could determine which AWS_Profile to use.</p>
<h2>Organizing Your Serverless Configuration</h2>
<p>If you?ve been using Serverless in production for a while now, most likely you?ve realized how complex your serverless.yml can become. Many of the configuration options could actually be reused, not only within your services, but throughout all your services.</p>
<p>As the framework matured, we started to notice patterns in how users are organizing their config file with the help of the variable system. Here are some common structures:</p>
<h3>Custom Resources Files</h3>
<p>Real world serverless applications require the use of many AWS resources that you?ll need to set up in the resources section of serverless.yml . Those resources themselves have many configurations on their own and they will most likely reference other variables. To keep serverless.yml from getting bloated, many users keep all their AWS resources in a single resources.json file, and reference that file in serverless.yml like this:</p>
<p>You can also have an outputs.json file and reference it the same way:</p>
<p>Then, inside of your resources.json & outputs.json, you can still reference other variables as required by your resources.</p>
<h3>Function Config Files</h3>
<p>Some users decide to follow a monolithic architecture when working the Serverless Framework. That means they have a single service, containing all their functions, for their entire project. As the number of functions grows, it become very difficult to manage configuration. Variables allow you to keep each function config in a separate file, for example sitting next to the handler in the service directory structure. Here is an example of what a serverless.yml might look like in this case:</p>
<p>And the directory structure would look something like this</p>
<h3>Central Variables File</h3>
<p>If you make extensive use of the variable system, and define a lot of variables for your project, you can keep them all in a single vars.json, vars.yml or vars.js file. Keeping them in a JS file is the most powerful option because it ensures that you can use logic to dynamically manipulate your exported variable values before they?re populated in serverless.yml.</p>
<p>So you?d have a vars.js file that looks something like this:</p>
<p>And then reference this file in serverless.yml like this:</p>
<p>This way, if you want to make changes to your variables, you?ll only have to do it once in this central vars.js file.</p>
<h2>Final Thoughts</h2>
<p>We just touched the surface on what the variable system could do for your application. There are really no limits with what you can do thanks to the support for JS scripts. <p>Last week we covered adding branch policies to a branch in an Azure DevOps Repo and this week we are going to deal with what happens when you need to break the policies you set up for some reason.</p>

<h3>Setting Bypass Security</h3>
<p>There are a couple of ways to set up bypassing depending on how broadly you want to give someone rights to bypass. We are going to start with the narrower option which is allowing bypass for an individual branch (sadly security options are currently available at the folder level like policies are). Starting from the list of branches for your repo mouse over the branch you want to set security for and click the three dots for the menu and select <strong>Branch security</strong>.</p>

<p>On the dialog that shows find the user, you want to change for security for, Eric Anderson in this example. After selecting a user their specific setting will be loaded to the right. On <strong>Bypass policies when completing pull requests</strong> change the option to <strong>Allow</strong>.</p>

<p>The second option for setting bypass security is at the repo level. From your <strong>Project settings</strong> under <strong>Repos</strong> select <strong>Repositories</strong> and then fine the <strong>Branches</strong> node under the project you want to set the policy for.</p>

<p>From here it is the same as the branch level. Find the user, you want to change for security for and set <strong>Bypass policies when completing pull requests</strong> to <strong>Allow</strong>.</p>

<h3>Bypassing Policies on a Pull Request</h3>
<p>Now that we have our security setup we are going to walk through what the bypass process looks like. Here we have a pull request that is missing approval by a reviewer.</p>

<p>Now let us say we don?t have a reviewer available for some reason and we need to complete this PR without review. Use the dropdown on the <strong>Set auto-complete</strong> button and click <strong>Complete</strong>.</p>

<p>When the PR completion dialog show you will notice a section at the top with a red background that lists out the policies that haven?t been met. With your new-found security, you will also have a section for <strong>Policy override options</strong>. To proceed and bypass the policies check the <strong>Override branch policies and enable merge</strong> checkbox, enter your reason for overriding, and click the <strong>Override and complete</strong> button.</p>

<p>Working within the UI on Azure DevOps is great, but I prefer some code to get the job done. Working with a REST API allows you the ability to interact with Azure DevOps within your application.</p>
<p>At the time of writing, the Azure DevOps REST API is on version 5.1.</p>
<h3><br />Pre-requisites:</h3>
<p>1. Pycharm or VSCode.</p>
<p>2. An Azure DevOps account.</p>
<p>3. A PAT token (admin rights to Azure DevOps required).<br /></p>
<p>The first thing we want to do is take a look at the REST API itself. Head over to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/a ... s-rest-5.1<br /></p>

<p>If you take a look on the left side, you'll see multiple pieces of documentation. You can interact with Azure DevOps via any of those API's. Today we're going to focus on the Build API.</p>
<p>If you click on the link above, you'll see a few different operations. The first piece of code we're going to write is for retrieving the builds. This would be a GET request.</p>
<p>Open up Pycharm or VSCode and lets write some code!</p>
<p>The first thing we'll need to do is import some libraries;<br /></p>
<p>from requests.auth import HTTPBasicAuth</p>
<p> <br />Let's go over each of these;</p>
<p> <br />requests = A library for API calls (GET, POST, DELETE, etc.)</p>
<p>requests.auth = Authentication for your API call</p>
<p>logging = Logger for specifying errors, warnings, info, etc.</p>
<p>getpass = A secure way to pass in your password (in our case the PAT token). It will not show as plain text.</p>
<p> <br />Now we can start taking a look at our core code. Let's build a function called buildAPI.</p>
<p> <br />def buildAPI(uri, username):</p>
<p>Within our function we'll create a variable for calling our PAT token.</p>

<p>Next we'll create our try/except blocks (For more info on error handling, please visit: https://realpython.com/python-exceptions/)</p>

<p>Let's talk about what we're doing above;</p>
<p>1. The first line is starting out try block for error handling purposes</p>
<p>2. The second line is our variable to call our requests library and the get() method. We're passing in our uri and auth. The uri we're getting from our params and the same goes for our username.</p>
<p>3. The third line is to print the response. In our case it's the JSON output of our builds.</p>
<p>4. The forth and fifth line is if any errors occur, print our the errors to our console.</p>
