We at hSo are incredibly passionate about the cloud and its potential. We provide cloud services after all! Over the past few weeks, we've covered devops, what it is and its partnership with the cloud. With the explosion of devops comes, of course, the parody twitter and tumblr accounts. We've also seen the memes that have risen out of the movement. So, here, we thought we'd share some of the funnier tweets and images we've come across regarding devops:

1. No collaboration equals a bad time!

? Catapult PR (@catapultpr) "https://twitter.com/catapultpr/status/618876746318741504">July 8, 2015

2. What do you mean you are not automating?!

#DOES15 @DOESsummit that moment after you ask a unicorn how to get your Fortune 1000 company to adopt #devops pic.twitter.com/FMzOvRywoD

3. When ops meets dev:

4. Our favourite protagonist DevOps Bane on his relationship with the cloud:

Oh, you think cloud is your ally! You merely adopted cloud. I was born in it! Molded by it. I didn't see hardware until I was already a man.

5. Grouchy Uncle's relationship with the cloud:

6. Borat thinks you should gamify your devops teams:

In startup we are gamify site outage. Three outage and ops team is out.

7. Read this very carefully ? it makes sense eventually:

For every of stakeholder involve in your project is completion of project delay by 6 month.

8. Our favourite Khaal from Game of Thrones had this to say about the public cloud:

Khaleesi want move to public cloud, but where will Khalasar ride if is no datacenter? Who we can slay without 1U server?

9. When all else fails, keep the optimism flowing:

In devops optimist is person which is see glass as 99.999% full.

10. The one true message that every believer of devops wants you to have?:

if you're not ready to die for it, put the word 'devops' out of your vocabulary.

In all seriousness, while the above tweets illustrate the humour and funny jokes devops has created, there's no question devops has had a significant impact on businesses. It's going to be interesting to see where it's headed and what it will help achieve. And while we at hSo have had immense fun explaining the wonderful and magical world of devops, we feel this image is apt as a parting gift:

Azure repos - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure repos

[youtube]

Azure repos Top news stories today Azure repos

Azure devops users cant see repos even though they have full read/contribute permissions. How could we fix?

If we add new users to a team, by just adding their email address, the new user can login to the project, but they can't see any of the repos, and don't even see the repos icon on the left (they do see overview, boards, pipelines and artifacts). These users have been given full access rights to all the repos, i.e. they are in the contributors group. If I look at repositories in the project settings, then find the user, they have all the permissions to all the repos, including read and contribute.

How I can I give them "more" access so they can see and use the git repos?

I have seen similar posts which mention users as being "basic" or "stakeholder", however this is not something I can see or change.

I am full administrator to the project.

1 Answer 1

They can't see any of the repos, and don't even see the repos icon on the left (they do see overview, boards, pipelines and artifacts

According to your description, these users should only have stakeholder access.

Actually, to use Code you need be qualified with two things: Permission , Access Level.

Have you checked that User?s Access Level you are? Is that user a Stakeholder in your organization?

User with Stakeholder access level, he will not be able to use Azure Repos for your private project.

You could check this info from Organization Setting-- Users--Access Level

Please change the user access level to Basic and above, then this user should be able to see and access these repos.

Note: To change access level, you must have Project Collection Administrator or organization Owner permissions in Azure DevOps.

Microservices in devops - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Microservices in devops

[youtube]

Microservices in devops News sites Microservices in devops

Microservices and containers together enable DevOps

There is a lot of buzz in the market on the topics of Microservices, Containers, and DevOps. Let?s see how organizations and their IT teams can produce new software capabilities and services more efficiently by utilizing a modern application software design and development processes such as Container-based Microservices and DevOps methodology

Microservices and containers

Containers and microservices are rapidly becoming the norm for enterprise organizations. According to the DZone Guide to Microservices, 64 percent of technology professionals used containers in the mainstream in 2017 and 89 percent are either already using or interested in using microservices.

Containers are often used to run each individual Microservice, serving as convenient, lightweight ?envelopes? that allow the software to be truly portable. They offer the right abstraction to encapsulate Microservices and both enable agility, speed and resource efficiency for many tasks that developers work daily.

Microservices and DevOps

Another trend that is capturing the imagination of enterprise IT is Microservices with DevOps, which is changing the way they work today. According to industry analysis, the DevOps & Microservice Ecosystem market will grow globally at a robust CAGR of 16% between 2017 and 2022, reaching $10 billion by 2021.

The evolution of DevOps and Microservices started with transforming monolithic applications into decomposed services. As organizations realize that agile transformation in application development isn?t enough to meet the agility needs of today?s fast-paced, hyper-competitive markets, they are fast embracing DevOps as the de facto IT mantra. In general, DevOps represents more of a cultural shift for developers than a technological one. With traditional, monolithic applications, there is a steep learning curve for developers to become familiar with a particular codebase. In a DevOps environment, there?s more flexibility. Once the organization understands the value of DevOps, they transform themselves culturally to bring in close collaboration between different stakeholders (developers, operations and businesses) and pick the right tools to complement each other.

Microservices architecture emerged from a common set of DevOps ideologies that came into being at companies like Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, Google, and several others. Those companies that excelled at DevOps also shared common approaches to software development and had similar organizational structures and development cultures. Looking for a vendor who has knowledge and experience in the technologies and industries that you need is important.

Microservices + containers = successful DevOps

While the benefits of DevOps are obvious, the intersection between using microservices and containers to support a DevOps environment is starting to become clear. DevOps approach targets the entire software delivery pipeline which can increase deployment frequency and lead to faster time-to-market for products. Organizations that use DevOps often see lower failure rates of new releases, shortened lead time between fixes and faster mean time to recovery.

Another benefit of using containers and microservices in a DevOps environment is that developers can independently deploy each service, which helps with fault isolation. If a part is problematic in a monolithic application, those issues can bring down the entire system. With containerization and microservices, that?s not the case.

Consider two key aspects of microservices

Packaging and deploying applications so they are portable across cloud providers.

Model the application into loosely coupled, single-function components that use REST for communication.

Organizations use containers to package and deploy monolithic and microservices-based applications. Many developers use Dockers, such as, because it offers a simple way to package the code and push it to the release pipeline, which streamlines the DevOps workflow.

With DevOps and microservices, developer teams can work on the loosely coupled application and choose the technology stack best suited for their requirements. It also enables new team members to ramp up more quickly to become familiar with the service they are working on.

Conclusion

The combination of Microservices, Containers, and DevOps has a great potential to transform enterprise IT and help organizations compete effectively not just today but also in the future.

There is no doubt that the combination of Microservices, Containers, and DevOps together work better together. With increased agility and flexibility, microservices and containers can be an ideal complement to an enterprise?s DevOps environment.

Team Foundation Server Integration Tools (March 2012 Release)

Microsoft

THIS SOLUTION HAS BEEN DEPRECATED - Please refer to Migration options for other supported migration options. If you?re looking for TFS to VSTS migrations, you can investigate the new TFS Database Import Service for Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS).

TFS Integration Tools were designed to work with Team Foundation Server 2012 and earlier. Use of these integration tools with TFS 2013 and 2015 may cause errors. TFS Integration Tools will not be supported past May 31, 2016.

The TFS Integration Tools is a project developed by the Team Foundation Server (TFS) product group and the Visual Studio ALM Rangers to integrate Team Foundation Server with third party systems for migration and synchronization of data. These tools are commonly used during migration to TFS, as well as for copying source control and work item data between servers.

Although the tools can be used for many purposes, planning, thorough testing and honest evaluation of extra resources and cost that will be required should precede any decision to use the Integration Tools. The Integration Tools are not intended to replace a server upgrade as a path to TFS 2010 or TFS 11 and this scenario should be avoided if possible.

This release (March 2012) is an update to the March 2011 release that adds support for TFS 11 as well as fixes several important bugs that were reported by customers. It includes the ability to synchronize with the hosted Team Foundation Service at http://tfspreview.com. If you are using a prior release, you should upgrade to this release by uninstalling your current tool and installing this version in its place.

Migrations are a very involved process and users can expect conflicts. Users must have an intimate knowledge of their source code in order to resolve these conflicts.

Upgrade vs. Migration

One common area of confusion is around the definition of "migration", especially as to how it compares with the term "upgrade". Below is an explanation of how these concepts differ (also see the aforementioned Migration Guidance Document).

Migration - For this project, and for TFS in general, we use the term "migration" to refer to moving data between two different servers. Migration is done through the APIs of TFS, and is a lossy data transfer (see the limitations listed below).

Upgrade - We define "upgrade" as the fully supported, in-the-box process of changing to the next version of TFS (e.g. upgrading from TFS 2005 to TFS 2008). Upgrades are done in-place, at the database level, and are full fidelity, meaning there is no data loss.

Updated documentation, guidance and case studies (readiness package)

Updated User Interface to configure and run integrations

Synchronization monitoring tools and reports

Limitations

As mentioned above, there are items that are not migrated when using the tool and this should to be taken into consideration when deciding on whether to do a migration or upgrade.

What IS NOT migrated by the Toolkit

On my earlier post on "What is DevOps?" I had few inputs where people were asking about day to day activities which DevOps folks involved in or what DevOps team can achieved.

I am penning down some of my thought from my own experience as well some study I have done. Please review.

Make sure that the pipeline is running smoothly ? This is one of the most important task of a DevOps engineer to make sure that CI/CD pipeline is intact and fixing any issue or failure with it is the #1 priority for the day. They often need to spend time on troubleshooting, analysing and providing fixes to issues.

Interaction with other teams ? Co-ordination and collaboration is the key for DevOps to be successful and hence daily integration with Dev and QA team, Program management, IT is always required.

Work on Automation Backlog ? Automation is soul of DevOps so DevOps engineering need to plan it out and I can see DevOps engineer spending lots of time behind the keyboard working on Automating stuff on daily basis.

Infrastructure Management ? DevOps engineer are also responsible for maintaining and managing the infrastructure required for CI/CD pipeline and making sure that its up and running and being used optimally is also part of their daily schedule. Ex. Working on Backup, High Availability, New Platform setup etc.

Dealing with Legacy stuff ? Not everyone is lucky to work on latest and newest things and DevOps engineers are no exception hence they also need to spend time on legacy i.e. in terms of supporting it or migrating to the latest.

Exploration ? DevOps leverage a lot from the various tools which are available, there are many options as open source so team need to regularly check on this to make sure the adoptions as required, this is something which also require some effort not on daily but regular basis. Ex. What are open source options available to keep the cost at minimum?

Removing bottleneck ? DevOps primary purpose is identify the bottlenecks / Manual handshakes and work with everyone involved (Dev / QA and all other stakeholder) to remove them so team spend good amount of time in finding such things and build the Automation Backlog using this. Ex. How we can get builds faster?

Documentation ? Though Agile / DevOps stresses less on the documentation, it is still the important one which DevOps engineer does on daily basis, Be it Server Information, Daily Week charted, Scrum / Kanban board or Simple steps to configure / backup or modify the infrastructure, you need to spent good amount of time in coming up these artifacts.

Training and Self Development ? Self leaning and Training is very useful in getting better understanding and many organisations encourage their employee to take the time out and do some of these and same holds true for DevOps folks as well, So learn something new everyday.

Continuous Improvement as Practice ? Last but not least, It?s up to the DevOps folks to build awareness on the potential of CI/CD and DevOps practices and building a culture of leveraging it for doing things better, reducing re-work, increasing the productivity and optimising the use of existing resources. Go and talk to people to build the DevOps and Continuous Improvement culture.

Refer to my earlier post on What is DevOps to know more about it. Please feel free to share / comment.
