<p>Lately I have to deal more with .NET Core Web Applications to setup build and release definitions in VSTS. What always comes up is how to deal with specific application settings which must me updated for a specific environment.</p>
<p>I have always been a big advocate of making a clear separation between build and release. The <strong>build</strong> should simply generate a generic package while the <strong>release</strong> should pick up the package and deploy it to any possible environment. At deployment time the specific enviroment values should be injected. Web Deploy has been the obvious tool in the past to make this happen with the capability to update the generated setparameters.xml file in a deployment action which injected the environment values into the web.config file.</p>
<p>Now with .NET Core and the typical <strong>appsettings.json</strong> file, it has become really easy in VSTS to inject custom values into the appsettings.json file.</p>
<p>Example of appsettings.json file in my solution:</p>

<p>Imagine that you would want to replace the values for the different settings (as from line 8). Note that it will also be possible to replace the values in the ?Administrators? array.</p>
<p>First, you will need to create a build in VSTS which produces the <strong>deployment zip package</strong> (via dotnet publish command).</p>

<p>The VSTS release definition will link to the build output and you can use the built-in release task ?Azure App Service Deploy? to <strong>deploy the build output to an Azure App Service</strong>.</p>

<p>The ?File Transformation? section in the release task offers the possibility to define the <strong>JSON variable substitution</strong>. You will need to provide the file name from the root and the environment values (pay attention to the format of the variable names) can be set for the ?DEV? environment.</p>

<p>Does anyone have any input or idea on how to add PowerApps projects into a DevOps repo. I understand that PowerApps has it's own version control, but I was just wondering if there is a way to version control PowerApps codes into DevOps.</p>

<p>You can use the SolutionPackager tool to extract solution components.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1:</strong> Export your solution using the Export-CrmSolution cmdlet</p>
<p>Export-CrmSolution -SolutionName "SolutionName" -Managed -SolutionZipFileName "SolutionName.zip"</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong> Extract the solution</p>
<p>SolutionPackager.exe /action:extract /folder:.\package /zipfile:"SolutionName.zip" /packagetype:Both /allowDelete:Yes /c</p>
<p>You can add these steps in a powershell script that execute from a Post-Build event in Visual Studio, similar to this:</p>
<p>if $(ConfigurationName) == Debug ( powershell.exe -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\SolutionExport.ps1)</p>
<p>Once this is done you can commit to your repo.</p>

For JSON variable subsitution, path should be provided relative to the root folder of the zip or folder. you can also provide wilcard patterns to search for JSON files. If any file path matched with wildcard pattern, then substitution is applied in the same file. Can you please provide `**/appsettings.json' in JSON variable substitution input field ?</p>

<p><strong>None</strong> and <strong>Minimal</strong> are useful in scenarios where the caller doesn't actually need much, if anything, about the resource because it's relying on the message or detailed message. <strong>None</strong> and <strong>Minimal</strong> are also useful for security reasons, for example, the caller needs to call back into Azure DevOps Services and go through normal security/permission checks to get more details about the resource.</p>

<p>Upgrading Azure DevOps Server Express is fairly simple, because Express installations are limited in size and to a single machine, and can't be configured for additional integrations such as reporting.</p>
<p>You can upgrade your express installation to a later version of Azure DevOps Server Express, or upgrade to a full Azure DevOps Server installation.</p>
<h2>Prepare your environment</h2>
<p>As with any upgrade, first check the system requirements to ensure that your current configuration is supported. For an Express deployment, check the OS. The upgrade process will attempt to upgrade SQL Express to the latest version, which typically requires the latest service pack of the currently installed version. The upgrade process itself tells you if any required component is missing.</p>
<h2>Expect the best, prepare for the worst</h2>
<p>For Azure DevOps Express installations, a pre-production upgrade isn't typically necessary, as these installations are used by only a small number of people. Even so, before starting the upgrade, you should take backups. The upgrade wizard provides access to a database backup tool which can do this for you if needed.</p>
<h2>Upgrade to a newer Express version</h2>
<p>To upgrade to a newer version, download and install that Azure DevOps Server Express version from the Download page. Install the software where you have the existing version installed. You will only need to make a couple of basic decisions. The installation remembers the settings from your previous installation.</p>
<p>By default, the TFS 2015 Express upgrade will install and configure a build agent for the new TFS 2015 build system, and will set it up to start automatically so that you can start using it right away after your upgrade. If you do not want to use the new build system, you can uncheck the box to turn the agent off.</p>
<p>As with all Azure DevOps configuration wizards, readiness checks will run to validate that your system is ready to configure. When you choose <strong>Configure your databases</strong>, your database will be upgraded.</p>
<h2>Upgrade to a full Azure DevOps Server version</h2>
<p>Upgrading an express installation to a full Azure DevOps Server version requires that you also upgrade from SQL Express to a SQL Server Standard or Enterprise edition.</p>

<p>My team recently inherited several C# Class Library repositories ? unfortunately, none of them had a proper build pipeline set up.</em></p>
<p>I got the task of setting up the build/release pipeline in Azure DevOps.</em></p>
<p>Here?s what I did.</em></p>
<h1>Branching Strategy</h1>
<p>Looking through the commit history, it looked like the previous team was using trunk development workflow. In other words, there was no branching strategy to speak of? all commits were pushed straight to master.</p>
<p>While that works for some teams, it?s definitely not something my team is comfortable with. We use a variation of GitHub flow:</p>

<p>The main difference comes from the way we release:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>At any time during development, developers may trigger a pre-release by pushing tags.</li>
<li>After merging to master, we trigger a production release by adding a tag. In our workflow, production tags are applied only after merging to master because we always squash merge pull requests.</em></li>
</ul>
</p>
<h1>The Project To Be Built</h1>
<p>The codebase we inherited are private repos, so for demonstration purposes I?ve created an example project which has a similar structure to the way the private codebase was set up.</p>
<p>Here?s what the project looks like:</p>

<h1>Requirements</h1>
<p>Based on our workflow, we have to cater for the following scenarios:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Commits are pushed: Build & Test only</em></li>
<li>Tags are pushed: Build, Test and Release (push to nuget repository)</em></li>
<li>Pull requests: Build & Test only</em></li>
<li>Daily builds: Build & Test only</em></li>
</ol>
</p>
<blockquote><p>Note: Daily builds became a requirement because in the past we?d inherited legacy code which had no active development in a year (sometimes even longer). And when we had to add a change or hotfix, we?d find the thing wouldn?t even build. Daily builds was our way of ensuring any code we were responsible for was, at the very least, healthy enough to build!</p></blockquote>
<p>Additionally, we need to ensure the following:</p>
<p>a) On release, verify that the tag conforms to semantic versioning. This is because nuget uses semantic versioning, and trying to push non-conforming packages to a nuget feed will result in errors</p>
<p>b) No pushing directly to master branch</p>
<p>c) Pull requests must be approved by another developer on the team</p>
<p>d) When merging, pull requests must use squash merge</p>
