Did you know the number of elite DevOps performers has almost tripled year over year? It's becoming more and more clear that DevOps is a key pillar of any successful modernization strategy in the enterprise. DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) recently released the 2019 Accelerate: State of DevOps Report, and we had the chance to talk to Dr. Nicole Forsgren, DORA co-founder and Google's lead researcher for the report, about this year's findings. The questions we received during the live chat were so rich that we wanted to share them with you-both those answered live and the ones we didn't have time to cover during the session.

Don't miss New Relic's take on this year's findings in the 2019 Accelerate: State of DevOps Report.

Here are the questions from the live chat, with fresh answers from Dr. Nicole Forsgren-and a few tips from our own point of view as well:

Q: If the elite group of DevOps performers gets too big, will you have to redefine what 'elite' means?

Dr. Nicole Forsgren

Nicole Forsgren: This is a great question. Right now, we collect questions on a log scale: that is, people are great at knowing what is happening, but in general terms, not in precise terms. People can tell you if their teams are pushing code daily versus monthly (and they won't make a mistake about that-while mistakes in code could 'roll up' to errors there). But we can't ask people for differences in 10 seconds versus 20 seconds. So what we can do is talk about trends in the industry-we can absolutely talk about how much of the industry is able to quickly develop and deliver stable code on demand. And it's interesting ? five years ago, I was getting phone calls from highly regulated companies insisting that my research was missing them, that I needed to do a State of DevOps Report for Finance, Telecom, and Healthcare. I don't get those calls anymore. We can see that excellence is possible for everyone. That is exciting, and this level of granularity is fine for that.

Our research continues to evolve and ask about additional practices that drive excellence and are critical to our infrastructure as well. For example, we found that only 40% of organizations are doing disaster recovery testing annually. Only 40%! So we will continue to monitor trends to see how they evolve into more advanced practices (like chaos testing) and how that impacts availability and reliability.

Q: What's the best way to be a DevOps advocate in an organization where DevOps is only thought of as build and deployment automation? Push for adoption of additional practices and habits one at a time?

NF: Exactly. Start where you are and make incremental improvements. Like the old adage says, 'Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.' Start by identifying your slowest service and take incremental steps to make it better. Prioritize the most critical issues and work your way down the list. And, most important, measure performance baselines both before and after you implement change so that you can demonstrate the impact of your efforts to the business. By sharing your successes you'll be able to build internal support for your DevOps effort.

Tori Wieldt: Agreed. And we love this tweet from Mark Imbriaco of Epic Games which sums it up perfectly:

Tweet from Mark Imbriaco of Epic Games

Q: How do DevOps and ITIL relate?

NF:ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) is a practice that we've seen heavily adopted for a number of years, particularly within verticals that are highly regulated. ITIL was born of the best of intentions, with the notion that having stronger processes in place would lead to better stability. But what DORA research found as early as 2014, and has reconfirmed this year, is that heavyweight approval mechanisms actually lead to more delays and instability. While it came from good intentions-one more set of eyes to make sure the changes are right!-the resulting delays lead to batching of work, an increased blast radius once those changes hit production, a higher likelihood that those changes would then result in errors, and then greater difficulty in identifying and debugging the errors that were introduced (time to restore service). That is, we've seen that ultimately it works much better in theory than in practice.

We're also seeing that some companies are adopting SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework), which is a great first step. But it's important that organizations not just 'land' and stay there, but continue to evolve and improve. You cannot expect to set frameworks and guidelines that will be around for another 5-10+ years. Successful DevOps requires continual improvement. We'll also point out that ITIL is much more than change approvals. Be sure to check out this year's report for how change advisory boards can shift into more strategic roles (page 51).

Q: What constitutes a failure? A bug? An outage?

NF: A failure is defined in the report (page 18) as a change to production or release to users that results in degraded service (e.g., a service impairment or service outage) and subsequently requires remediation (e.g., a hotfix, rollback, fix forward, or patch). We generally accept the definition that a bug is an error, fault, or flaw in any program or system that causes it to behave incorrectly; and we define an outage as unplanned system downtime.

Q: Great tools are only great if you get great adoption. What tactics do you recommend to increase adoption?

NF: Achieving great adoption ultimately ties back to several factors: Tools need to be useful, easy to use, and provide users with the right information. (Fun fact: a lot of this ties back to pieces of my dissertation and post-doc!) Employing tools that check these boxes is important as its highly correlated with quality of continuous delivery and predictive of productivity.

TW: Establishing Communities of Practice (COPs) within an organization can also be a great way to encourage and influence internal adoption. These could be broadly interest-based, so that participants can pick and choose which topics are relevant and useful to their job function. Then, within the group, members regularly hold trainings or 'lunch and learns' to share demos or walkthroughs of the tools that they are using. We have strong COPs at New Relic, and we like to think of it as 'crowdsourcing' tech information.

Q: How often do you find a strong (active) programming requirement a condition of the DevOps role?

NF: It's certainly important. But that also depends on how you define a 'DevOps role.' In any case, by its nature, the approach of DevOps is intended to apply an 'engineering lens' to traditional operations, allowing ops work to be more repeatable and more performant, or to apply an appreciation for operations concerns like reliability and scalability to development work. Both of those require some programming skills. The importance is in the overlap and extensibility of the work.

TW: We agree that a solid technical background is a requirement for good DevOps work. You'll need to do some level of programming for automation. We recently compiled key questions to prep for in a DevOps interview, and many of them focus on highlighting examples of technical and collaborative projects the candidate has worked on, as well as any skills or certifications the candidate has earned. Our blog on the typical Day in the Life of an SRE, penned by our own Yonatan Schultz, also demonstrates why the need for a broad technical background is so important to success in a DevOps role.

Q: Can you talk more about 'pre-mortem'-why is it different from CAB?

TW: CAB stands for 'Change Advisory Board,' which in some organizations is a group of two to three senior engineers who are tasked with the job of approving code for production, with the goal of minimizing risk. Here at New Relic, we previously employed a CAB but eventually found it to be too much of a bottleneck and a hurdle to agility. Instead, we've now implemented an automated 'pre-flight check' for all code changes, which allows us to move much faster.

A pre-mortem, on the other hand, is an exercise in which your stakeholder group holds a brainstorming session about a particular project (or infrastructure or services) before it deploys and envisions all the things that could possibly go wrong with it. This is a fantastic opportunity to lay out a solid game plan and minimize the things that could go wrong well before the adrenaline kicks in on launch day.

Continuous integration development - Кабринский Эдуард

Continuous integration development

[youtube]

Continuous integration development Live news Continuous integration development

Continuous Integration

Quick Links

Definition

Teams practicing continuous integration seek two objectives:

minimize the duration and effort required by each integration episode

be able to deliver a product version suitable for release at any moment

In practice, this dual objective requires an integration procedure which is reproducible at the very least, and largely automated. This is achieved through version control tools, team policies and conventions, and tools specifically designed to help achieve continuous integration.

Common Pitfalls

As suggested above, the practice of continuous integration should not be confused with the tools that assist it (CI servers such as Cruise Control, Hudson, etc.). Continuous integration is first and foremost a matter of attitude rather than tools, and it relies on more than one kind of tool: tools for testing, tools for automating build processes, and tools for version control.

Continuous integration aims to lessen the pain of integration by increasing its frequency. Therefore, ?any? effort related to producing intermediate releases, and which the team experiences as particularly burdensome, is a candidate for inclusion in the team?s continuous integration process. (This is the reasoning that leads teams to continuous deployment.)

Origins

1993: the phrase ?continuous integration? is already in use and thus predates what will later be known as Agile processes, for instance an article contrasts it with ?scheduled? integration, and recommends the latter, citing ?lack of thorough testing? as one issue with continuous integration; this helps explain why the automated testing favored by Agile teams is an enabler for continuous integration

1996: Steve McConnell describes the ?Daily Build and Smoke Test? technique, used at Microsoft for Windows NT 3.0 during the 1990?s; the emphasis is not so much on the automation as on the frequency, the daily cycle being at that time considered ?extreme?

1998: continuous integration is listed among the core practices of Extreme Programming

2000: an article by Martin Fowler provides perhaps the most complete description of the continuous integration practice available at that time

2001: Cruise Control, the first ?continuous integration server?, is published under an open source license; it automates monitoring of the source code repository, triggering the build and test process, notifications of the results to the developers, and archival of the test reports; the period 2001-2007 sees a large number of similar tools appear, leading perhaps to an excessive focus on tools over practice

2004: an article by Alberto Savoia proposes ?Extreme Feedback Devices? such as lava lamps or dedicated monitors, to display the results of the most recent integration, an important innovation in CI

Signs of Use

For most teams, continuous integration in practice amounts to the following:

use of a version control tool (CVS, SVN, Git, etc.)

an automated build and product release process

instrumentation of the build process to trigger unit and acceptance tests ?every time any change is published to version control?

in the event of even a single test failing, alerting the team of a ?broken build? so that the team can reach a stable, releasable baseline again soonest

optionally, the use of a tool such as a continuous integration server, which automates the process of integration, testing and reporting of test results

Look for a dedicated display in a prominent spot of the team room: this can be a normal monitor, an LED display or even a lava lamp, with the sole purpose of reporting on the result of the most recent integration.

Observe also how the team responds to a broken build, suggesting that a defect may have been detected. If the team is aware of defects, but tolerates them or continues working on a product that isn?t in a releasable state, the term continuous integration no longer applies, irrespective of tooling!

Continuous integration development

Continuous Integration is the practice of merging code changes into a shared repository several times a day in order to release a product version at any moment.

Nutanix aims to ?simplify automation and make it more accessible?.

Cloud computing company, Nutanix has expanded its portfolio with digital workflow company ServiceNow, as well as capabilities in Nutanix Calm ? application automation and management solution for DevOps.

Nutanix aims to ?simplify automation and make it more accessible? to IT professionals at all levels, with the added services.

According to Nutanix integration with automation solutions like ServiceNow allows Nutanix customers to further simplify cloud and application management by integrating with their existing IT ticketing system to simplify workflows.

Product capabilities also include:

Simplified DevOps: Customers can automate their app lifecycles, including upgrades, patches, expansions and more, while taking advantage of the approval flow and audit capabilities of ServiceNow. They can also increase their security posture by maintaining passwords in a central CyberArc vault, particularly important for government and enterprise customers.

Simplified Infrastructure Management: Builds on the previously released integration with ServiceNow, Nutanix Prism Pro customers can now respond to alerts and incidents directly in their ServiceNow portal. For example, customers can track infrastructure shortages or issues through automatically created tickets in ServiceNow. They can also resolve them right in their ticketing system. Adding third-party applications to trigger automation helps customers create an end-to-end IT service management process.

Simplified Cloud Governance and Cost Optimisation: Customers will be able to limit unintended public cloud consumption which often leads to significant budget overages. With this solution, customers will be able to automatically pull Nutanix Xi Beam?s cost and security optimisation recommendations into existing ServiceNow workflows, by automatically creating tickets based on cost savings recommendations and security vulnerability alerts and assigning them to an appropriate owner.

Rajiv Mirani chief technology officer at Nutanix said, customers look to streamline their IT operations and costs during this global crisis, these new features will help customers to simplify and automate infrastructure, application, and cloud management.

?As IT teams focus on delivering remote work solutions, they sometimes struggle to support the business more broadly because they are strapped for time and resources,? he said.

Manual processes are still the norm in IT despite the cost savings and increased speed from automating repetitive operations, said Mirani.

?It is expected that by 2024 organisations will lower operational costs by 30 per cent by combining hyperautomation technologies with redesigned operational processes, a transition that might accelerate in response to the current global situation,? he said. According to a PwC survey, 62 per cent of organisations are looking at containing costs and 54 per cent are concerned about the potential or significant impact to business operations as a result of the global pandemic.

Devops continuous delivery - Кабринский Эдуард

Devops continuous delivery

[youtube]

Devops continuous delivery Latest news update Devops continuous delivery

Continuous Delivery

What is Continuous Delivery?

Continuous Delivery is the ability to get changes of all typesРІ??including new features, configuration changes, bug fixes and experimentsРІ??into production, or into the hands of users, safely and quickly in a sustainable way.

Our goal is to make deploymentsРІ??whether of a large-scale distributed system, a complex production environment, an embedded system, or an appРІ??predictable, routine affairs that can be performed on demand.

We achieve all this by ensuring our code is always in a deployable state, even in the face of teams of thousands of developers making changes on a daily basis. We thus completely eliminate the integration, testing and hardening phases that traditionally followed РІ??dev completeРІ??, as well as code freezes.

Why continuous delivery?

It is often assumed that if we want to deploy software more frequently, we must accept lower levels of stability and reliability in our systems. In fact, peer-reviewed research shows that this is not the caseРІ??high performance teams consistently deliver services faster and more reliably than their low performing competition. This is true even in highly regulated domains such as financial services and government. This capability provides an incredible competitive advantage for organizations that are willing to invest the effort to pursue it.

The practices at the heart of continuous delivery help us achieve several important benefits:

Low risk releases. The primary goal of continuous delivery is to make software deployments painless, low-risk events that can be performed at any time, on demand. By applying patterns such as blue-green deployments it is relatively straightforward to achieve zero-downtime deployments that are undetectable to users.

Faster time to market. ItРІ??s not uncommon for the integration and test/fix phase of the traditional phased software delivery lifecycle to consume weeks or even months. When teams work together to automate the build and deployment, environment provisioning, and regression testing processes, developers can incorporate integration and regression testing into their daily work and completely remove these phases. We also avoid the large amounts of re-work that plague the phased approach.

Higher quality. When developers have automated tools that discover regressions within minutes, teams are freed to focus their effort on user research and higher level testing activities such as exploratory testing, usability testing, and performance and security testing. By building a deployment pipeline, these activities can be performed continuously throughout the delivery process, ensuring quality is built in to products and services from the beginning.

Lower costs. Any successful software product or service will evolve significantly over the course of its lifetime. By investing in build, test, deployment and environment automation, we substantially reduce the cost of making and delivering incremental changes to software by eliminating many of the fixed costs associated with the release process.

Better products. Continuous delivery makes it economic to work in small batches. This means we can get feedback from users throughout the delivery lifecycle based on working software. Techniques such as A/B testing enable us to take a hypothesis-driven approach to product development whereby we can test ideas with users before building out whole features. This means we can avoid the 2/3 of features we build that deliver zero or negative value to our businesses.

Happier teams. Peer-reviewed research has shown continuous delivery makes releases less painful and reduces team burnout. Furthermore, when we release more frequently, software delivery teams can engage more actively with users, learn which ideas work and which donРІ??t, and see first-hand the outcomes of the work they have done. By removing the low-value painful activities associated with software delivery, we can focus on what we care about mostРІ??continuously delighting our users.

If this sounds too good to be true, bear in mind: continuous delivery is not magic. ItРІ??s about continuous, daily improvementРІ??the constant discipline of pursuing higher performance by following the heuristic РІ??if it hurts, do it more often, and bring the pain forward.РІ??

This ice-breaker simulation increases trust and relationship. Trust - is a big aspect, you can?t be successful if you can?t trust other parts of an organization. When we?re surrounded by people who believe what we believe, something remarkable happens? trust emerges. Team members need to build Trust with IT team themselves and some of the other.
This simulation will prove how small batch release wins over big bang release. Big bang release - In traditional software development, we develop for years and release everything together. This creates a lot of issues like long lead time, skyrocketing levels of WIP (work in progress), long waiting, increasing development cost, low quality and more. Continue Reading ?

Industrial DevOps

Applying DevOps and Continuous Delivery to Significant Cyber-Physical Systems

As DevOps continues to challenge the status quo and improve business outcomes for software systems, many of the world?s larger enterprises also need to identify how to scale these practices across large, complex systems composed of hardware, firmware, and software. This paper provides an extended definition for DevOps as it applies to large, complex cyber-physical systems, and offer some recommendations on how to effectively leverage continuous delivery and DevOps these systems.

Additional Information

The move to integrated ?DevOps? (a concatenation of development and operations) is producing a dramatic change in the way we develop and deploy software and IT systems. The result is faster time to market, more resilient and more malleable systems, and systems that can be used to test potential innovations faster from a scalable production environment.

As DevOps continues to challenge the status quo and improve business outcomes for software systems, many of the world?s larger enterprises also need to identify how to scale these practices across large, complex systems composed of hardware, firmware, and software. The ability to iterate and deploy faster allows companies to adapt to changing needs, reduce cycle time for delivery, increase value for money, improve transparency, and leverage innovations.

However, there is an industry-wide misconception that this form of rapid iteration and improved flow applies only to software or small applications and systems. In this paper, we will provide an extended definition for DevOps as it applies to large, complex cyber-physical systems, and offer some recommendations on how to effectively leverage continuous delivery and DevOps these systems.

Mulesoft devops - Эдуард Кабринский

Mulesoft devops

[youtube]

Mulesoft devops Headlines Mulesoft devops

MuleSoft - Endpoints

Endpoints basically include those components that trigger or initiate the processing in a working flow of Mule application. They are called Source in Anypoint Studio and Triggers in the Design Center of Mule. One important endpoint in Mule 4 is Scheduler component.

Scheduler Endpoint

This component works on time-based conditions, which means, it enables us to trigger a flow whenever a time-based condition is met. For example, a scheduler can trigger an event to start a Mule working flow every, say 10 seconds. We can also use flexible Cron expression to trigger a Scheduler Endpoint.

Important points about Scheduler

While using Scheduler event, we need to take care of some important points as given below ?

Scheduler Endpoint follows the time-zone of the machine where Mule runtime is running.

Suppose if a Mule application is running in CloudHub, the Scheduler will follow the time-zone of the region in which the CloudHub worker is running.

At any given time, only one flow triggered by the Scheduler Endpoint can be active.

In Mule runtime cluster, the Scheduler Endpoint runs or triggers only on primary node.

Ways to configure a Scheduler

As discussed above, we can configure a scheduler endpoint to be triggered at a fixed interval or we can also give a Cron expression.

Parameters to configure a Scheduler (For Fixed Interval)

Following are the parameters to set a scheduler to trigger a flow at regular intervals ?

Frequency ? It basically describes at which frequency the Scheduler Endpoint will trigger the Mule flow. Unit of time for this can be selected from the Time Unit field. In case you do not provide any values for this, it will use the default value which is 1000. On the other side, if you provide 0 or a negative value, then also it uses the default value.

Start Delay ? It is the amount of time we must wait before triggering the Mule flow for the first time once the application is started. The value of Start delay is expressed in the same unit of time as the frequency. Its default value is 0.

Time Unit ? It describes the time unit for both Frequency and Start Delay. The possible values of time unit are Milliseconds, Seconds, Minute, Hours, Days. The default value is Milliseconds.

Parameters to configure a Scheduler (For Cron Expression)

Actually, Cron is a standard used for describing time and date information. In case you use the flexible Cron expression to make Scheduler trigger, the Scheduler Endpoint keeps track of every second and creates a Mule event whenever the Quartz Cron expression matches the time-date setting. With Cron expression, the event can be triggered just once or at regular intervals.

Following table gives the date-time expression of six required settings ?

Attribute

Value

Seconds

0-59

Minutes

0-59

Hours

0-23

Day of month

1-31

Month

1-12 or JAN-DEC

Day of the week

1-7 or SUN-SAT

Some examples of Quartz Cron expressions supported by the Scheduler Endpoint are given below ?

? * * * * ? ? means that the scheduler runs every 2 seconds of the day, every day.

0 0/5 16 ** ? ? means that the scheduler runs every 5 minutes starting at 4 pm and ending at 4:55 pm, every day.

1 1 1 1, 5 * ? ? means that the scheduler runs the first day of January and the first day of April, every year.

Example

The following code logs the message ?hi? every second ?

The one stop shop for learning DevOps on AWS, to help master DevOps concepts, along with the AWS tools.

Developing is a time consuming process, that requires coding, testing, bug fixing, recoding, testing, deployment. This process takes weeks, months and sometimes even years depending on how complex the software is. But what if you could reduce this process to hours and weeks, this is exactly what DevOps does.

DevOps looks at automating the entire process of testing and deployment to reduce the amount of work that a developer needs to do. This makes it not only easier to build more products, but it also makes it faster to work on the changes and putting the new updates into the pipeline.

AWS offers powerful cloud features which can help scale your application easily to millions of users. We bring together an unique course which will help you create your production and deployment environment on cloud and will teach you implement the best of cloud computing practices.

This is why companies are looking to hire DevOps and AWS architects that can help them build this process and design better apps and software, faster and in a more sophisticated manner. However, learning DevOps and AWS isn?t easy. It requires an understanding of basic DevOps concepts and AWS tools, along with programming languages.

This is why we have designed this course! This DevOps on AWS tutorial helps breakdown simple DevOps and AWS concepts and builds upon to them to help you learn exactly how to code using DevOps and AWS, as well as test and deploy your apps on the cloud platform.

The course will cover topics such as what is DevOps, why it is trending and how it came into existence, as well as introduction to cloud computing and how to benefit from the AWS cloud platform. It also includes building a very basic web application on the cloud, utilizing tools like Ansible and Jenkins and also learning how to use AWS tools such as CloudFormation, CodeDeploy and CodePipeline. Lastly, you will also learn how to actually deploy apps on AWS instances automatically and also achieve continuous integration using DevOps and AWS tools.

At the end of this course, not only will you have mastered the concepts required to understand DevOps and AWS, but you will also learn exactly how to get started working with these tools and even how to actually build an app and deploy it on the cloud.

Enroll now and become a DevOps and AWS master with this course!
