DevOps Tips

To get a job in DevOps, you need to be able to build, test, and release high-quality software quickly. But to build a successful career, you need a broad base of soft skills as well as the ability to implement the latest technology and trends. This training course focuses on these oft-overlooked topics, providing the critical knowledge to take you to next level in DevOps. Instructor Michael Jenkins covers soft skills such as hiring, collaborating, working remotely, and avoiding burnout. He then pivots to technology trends, covering the best ways to introduce infrastructure as code, microservices, and serverless to your organization. In the third chapter, he concentrates on essential resources for building your career: developer roadmaps, certifications, and other ways of keeping up with the DevOps industry. This course is an invaluable guide for anyone who wants to learn the skills that separate the good from the great DevOps professional.

An introduction to DevOps Tips

- [Instructor] Microservices have been growing in popularity since their introduction in the early 2000s. With the increased use of cloud computing, architects began to look at microservices as a way to solve problems resulting from the widely used architecture known as the monolith. In the simplest terms, monolithic applications are built by combining all functions into a single artifact. Let's take a web application, for example. As a monolith, this might mean that the front-end, backend and any business logic in between are coded, tested, and deployed all together. They might also all be attached to the same database at the data layer. While monoliths may provide the benefit of a single code base, they can negatively impact development and operations in many ways. First, with a code base made up of a single language or technology, monoliths might not be able to take advantage of innovations provided by other?

The command below will create a service principal with the name ?ServicePrincipalName?. Replace the value and execute the command in the cloud shell.

Azure will generate an appID, which is the Service principal client ID used by Azure DevOps Server. It will also generate a strong password, which is the Service principal key. The final value of interest is the tenant, which is the Tenant ID. Copy these values to the service connection form in the other tab.

Execute the command below to retrieve details about your Azure subscription.

The id is the Subscription ID you need to create the service connection. The name is the Subscription name you need. Copy these values as well.

The form should now be complete. Click Verify connection to make sure the values work as expected. Click OK when verified. You will now be able to reference this connection from release pipeline tasks.

Hi Nik, welcome to the Community!

Have you followed our documentation already? You can also find documentation from Azure's side.

Let us know if you encounter any problems!

You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.

I'm not the original poster, but that "our documentation" link points to information about deploying to Azure (proper). For all intents and purposes, that information has nothing to do with the DevOps application nor does it speak to what the OP is trying to achieve. Just putting that out there.

You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.

Yep agreed, this response from @Ana Retamal is not useful for this question.

Basically since Pipelines can't build using windows docker containers (with no updates on progress) we've had no option but to move to azure devops. I'm wanting to keep the same build visibility (as with bamboo cloud (defunct) or pipelines) that we had previously however I can't seem to find any information regarding that.

You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.

There is now a bit bucket source which allows dev ops to push the build status. From what I can tell it only pushed it with a CI task not a manual build and works seamlessly changing from git source to bitbucket source

Any updates on this?

I think this is built in service in Devops and not dealt with by atlassian, so should prob contact them if you need build status of manual builds coming through. Might also be just my setup for some reason. Give it a go and see how it works from you.

You can trigger Microsoft Azure DevOps Pipelines from Bitbucket Server or Data Center using our Bitbucket Post Webhook App.

PowerApps has made it easy for users to be closer to data and access different sources of information on the go by leveraging the capabilities of PowerPlatform. In this article I will be talking about one of the requirements you might come across which is to have a PowerApp that communicates with Azure DevOps to check on work items created by a user.

You might be thinking this is a simple requirement and rather straightforward, however, you will come across a couple of challenges, which I will explain and provide a way to overcome:

Scenario:

Requirement is to have a PowerApp that lists workitems of type TASK which were created by you.

Problem 1: PowerApps doesn't natively support Azure DevOps connector.

If you access make.powerapps.com, and start creating your app to achieve our scenario above, you will insert a gallery, and try to bind Azure DevOps connector to it, and then assume you will get those work items listed upon creating your first Text control in the gallery, however, this will not be the case and would be rather tedious to implement. Now, the good news, is that there is a way to achieve this requirement, and it is using Microsoft Flow.

You start from Azure DevOps, and create a Shared query, which will return the list of work items of type Task, that were created by you, this is achieved by query in the illustration below:

In PowerApps, go to Flows, and create a new Instant-from blank Flow triggered by PowerApps. First attempt of this flow might look like the below:

The above Flow utilises the "Azure DevOps - Get Query Results" as a step which we will connect to the Shared Query we created in previous step to retrieve the list of work items.

Next step in the Flow uses the "Response" Action which will take the output value from DevOps, and pass it over to PowerApps in a format that it understands, which in our case, will use Collections. We used Collection because results of the query will return an array of items from Flow to PowerApps. Pretty straightforward, isn't it? Yes, but bear in mind that Response Action is available as Premium, and as per recent licensing terms from Microsoft, you will be paying to use this in your flow, for further details on the licensing terms, refer to "https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/new-licensing-options-for-powerapps-and-flow/"

The above approach brings us to the second problem, which is if you don't want to use the "Response" action, how would you still achieve this? Keep reading, the solution is here and yet to emerge :)

Problem 2: Find a replacement to the Response Action in MS Flow.

We are still going to use MS Flow, and the replacement would look like the below:

Big thanks goes to Mr.Dang and his video on YouTube which explains how you can return an array of elements from MS Flow into PowerApps (here). In his example, he returned this from a SQL Stored Procedure, but helped a lot in utilizing the same technique to achieve our requirement.

As you can see from above illustration, we have now replaced the Response action with Data Operation actions, namely, "Select", and "Join". The first will select the specified properties of all elements in the source array, and map them to a new array, the second will join the output from "Select" using a delimeter and come back with one big string, which we will then process in next step.

Select and Join will look like the below:

We are selecting the elements coming back from Azure DevOps, and map those with unique prefixes, "A/" and "B/" respectively, those will be used later in our processing to extract those elements in PowerApps. Elements used in our example here, are Title of the work item and the person it is assigned to.

In the Join Step, we are concatenating the elements extracted from DevOps, using a unique delimeter, "\n".

The last step in our Flow, will be "Respond to PowerApps", this will return the generated string back to PowerApp, in a format that it will be able to read, in our case, i have selected "Text" from the options we have.

Now, last step, would be designing our PowerApp, this will have two screens, first will have a button "Generate List" which will trigger the flow and return this big string.

In the "OnSelect" action for this button, you will need to write the below piece of code:

Written code will basically trigger the flow, receive the generated string in a variable called "JsonOutput", create a Collection called "GetMyTasks", which will have one column called Title, and lastly, navigate to the second screen in the app, to list the extracted Titles in a Galley, as you can see below.

The above scenario was part of a bigger requirement that i was working on, and after loads of research and investigation, i came up with the above, there might be other options to achieve this, which i hope you could share!

Azure devops json variable substitution - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops json variable substitution

Azure DevOps: Show Me the JSON!

Creating resources in Azure, while not difficult, can be time consuming if you use the manual steps. One way to automate the process is by using JSON templates to save time and enforce standards. In this article, Brian Flynn describes how to create JSON templates for deploying a network with virtual machines.

Are you building and deploying Azure ARM resources, click by click, in the portal? If you haven?t learned how to deploy with JSON template files yet, then you should. And I hope that this article will help.

Using JSON documents to define and deploy Azure resources, can save you lots of time by avoiding a step-by-step mouse clicking through a web GUI, waiting for each page to load, so you can define your resources. There are many rinse and repeat steps when building out a network. You can also use these JSON templates to improve consistency of standard naming conventions and adherence to configuration details of commonly used Azure resources, while parameterizing for things that change almost every time, i.e. resource names, IP addresses, usernames, passwords, etc.

In this article, I?ll teach you a little about JSON, then walk you through the process of building a JSON document that will define

a resource group

a virtual network

two subnets

network security groups

a VPN gateway

a VPN connection

a managed disk VM

an unmanaged disk VM

public IP addresses

It takes about 30 minutes to execute that whole build out, and 25 minutes of it is just waiting for the VPN gateway to spin up. It builds the two servers in about five minutes!

I like to deploy using the Templates blade in Azure, because there are fewer authentication prompts to deal with, and it enables me to test the process for less technical users who would prefer to not look at PowerShell scripts or .NET code. Figure 1 shows the first page of a template.

To get to the Templates blade, click All services and search for Templates. If you want to add it to your side menu, click the star. Once there, click the Add button. Here you can define a template. You can also copy and paste in my final JSON document and try it out. Figure 1 shows a template.

Figure 1: The template edtior

Once you click Deploy, you?ll see a screen where settings can be modified before your resources are created as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Deploying the Azure template

When you use the portal to define and deploy resources such as VMs, behind the scenes, it is building a JSON document for each that it will process to deploy your defined resources. You can download all of these JSON documents! To see JSON documents for your existing resources, open any resource, then click Automation Script. There, you will see a script that defines everything in your subscription as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3: The resource automation script

Another option is to define a new resource, then click the Download template and parameters link instead of the Create button. Figure 4 shows this option.

Figure 4: Download instead of creating

Downloading the template for resources is a great shortcut for learning how to create new JSON templates for future deployments!

JSON Basics

Let?s start by looking at the basics of JSON documents. JSON documents are text documents that convey structured data, such as name-value pairs of strings, integers, and Booleans. The documents are organized into arrays and documents, where documents are also collections of strings, integers, Booleans, and arrays of them, too. Name-value pairs are quoted strings, separated by colons. When defining integers or Booleans only the name needs to be quoted. Arrays are defined with square brackets [ and ], and the array elements are separated by commas. Data that defines objects is often defined in JSON ?documents,? which are collections of name value pairs of any data type. In JSON, documents are defined with curly brackets <and >.

An empty JSON document would contain only <>. Here is a simple Hello World JSON document that is like a contact card. I?ve demonstrated basic strings and an object. But no arrays, here. There will be plenty of array examples below.

Azure devops pull request -

Azure devops pull request

[youtube]

Azure devops pull request Today's news headlines Azure devops pull request

Azure

Azure DevOps

Xamarin
