Your trusted adviser for enterprise IT services: hybrid IT, cloud, digital transformation, data center, & consulting.

A fundamental building block for your successful adoption of cloud services is the organizational hierarchy, a mode of organizing your cloud services, resources, and virtual machines in such a way that you ensure cloud governance and can better resolve billing within your organization.

Cloud governance is the answer to common questions like:

РІ??How do I keep my data compliant with industry regulations?РІ??

РІ??How can I implement chargeback within my organization so I know which departments are consuming cloud services and account for that usage?РІ??

РІ??How can I mandate security and access measures across our cloud environment?РІ??

By implementing a flexible set of controls and overall organizational hierarchy within Azure, you can enable adoption of the cloud services your business units require and avoid shadow cloud use. A well-designed enterprise cloud environment can accommodate modern agile practices alongside traditional workloads.

HereРІ??s how to structure your organizational hierarchy within Azure so you can set governance requirements and encourage speed of delivery for your individual departments and business units.
Р’

ArenРІ??t hierarchies outdated?

With the introduction of Azure Management Groups, the previous model of departments and accounts became outmoded. However, creating a hierarchy as described below remains one of the best ways to initially structure your Management Groups.

Azure Management Groups allow a flexible structure of unified policies and access management across specified groups or business divisions. Each policy you apply to one group also applies to any nested underneath it. Each group has its own associated subscriptions.

WhatРІ??s included in an Azure hierarchy

Your hierarchy will comprise subscription groups, subscriptions, and resource groups. WeРІ??ll be addressing the subdivisions assuming you have an Enterprise Agreement. Each subscription contains all resources while defining essential limits on the number of cores allowed, virtual networks, and more. Resource groups allow further subdivisions and groupings of those resources for better management.

You must arrange your hierarchy according to your individual organizationРІ??s needs and practices for billing and IT resource management. Generally speaking, the hierarchy moves from one to many in the following order:

Enterprise РІ?? Department(s) РІ?? Account(s) РІ?? Subscription(s) РІ?? Resource Group(s)

Each of these categories will correspond to a division of your business or organization depending on how you with to organize your hierarchy. For example, in a РІ??FunctionalРІ?? pattern of distribution, it would be as follows:

Entire Organization (Enterprise) РІ?? Departments such as Finance, IT, Marketing РІ?? Account Owner within that Department (Account) РІ?? Individual Projects such as Dev Environment 1, Production Website, ERP App (Subscription)

Two other common patterns are РІ??Business DivisionРІ?? and РІ??GeographicРІ??.

For geographic, the hierarchy is:

Entire Org (Enterprise) РІ?? Region such as North America, Colorado, or Midwest (Department) РІ?? Account Owner within that geo (Account) РІ?? Individual Projects (subscription)

Business division hierarchies are essentially the same as the functional pattern described above, but instead of the department being finance, marketing, or IT, it would be the entire business unit. For example, a technology hardware company might structure its Departments under Handheld Devices, Servers, PCs, Audio & Visual, etc.

Business division has become the most popular hierarchy, especially for large enterprises with many siloed divisions, as there are likely to be applications and services used by many different business departments within the same division.
Р’

Driving DevOps via hierarchies

One side effect of the Azure hierarchical model is somewhat forced adoption of DevOps practices. Namely, the development team may begin to take ownership of key governance, security, and billing implementations as they are the first to stand up a new service or resource group. Operational components like Key Vault management is often automated at the dev level before entering production as well.

This can seriously boost time to market as resource groups are streamlined and optimized. Eventually, your entire hierarchy benefits from automation and repeatable processes first established in a pre-production environment.

Azure devops and github - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops and github

[youtube]

Azure devops and github Recent news stories Azure devops and github

Wyam, Azure DevOps and GitHub Pages

Publishing a static site with a static content generator can be fully automated. In this case I'm using Wyam, a static site generator, GitHub Pages for hosting and Azure DevOps for build and deployment. Of course there are a ton of other ways to do this, but right now I'll show you the way that I chose to use.

This post will mainly focus on automated build and deployment, since there are a lot of great online resources on how to setup Wyam on your local machine.

GitHub setup

As I said, I'm using GitHub Pages to host my site. You can use it for free for any static website. By default GitHub Pages supports Jelyll with some out of the box themes and plugins. I used Jekyll in the past, but I found Wyam easier to work with.

To create a personal blog on GitHub Pages, you should create a Git repository named yourusername.github.io . When you do this, GitHub will automatically create the site for you, and use the master branch for the site content. So once you created the repository, don't use the master branch, but create a new branch that will contain your working files. I named my working branch source .

Perform the following commands after you created the repository on GitHub to setup the branches.

Make sure you don't include README and .gitignore when creating the repository on GitHub

These command will clone the repository from GitHub, create a new branch named source , push the new branch to GitHub and makes source the default branch. You can check whether you are on the source branch with this command:

.gitignore

In the next steps we'll start creating the site. In this process some files will be created that we don't want in our Git repository. To automate this you can create a file named .gitignore in your project root and add these contents:

Setup Wyam

First install Wyam if you haven't already done this. You can find how to install Wyam in the Wyam Documentation.

Now move into your working directory ( yourusername.github.io ) and create a new Wyam project. In this case I'll demonstrate how to create a blog since I think this is the most common use case.

This will scaffold a new Wyam site with the blog recipe. More about Wyam recipes can be found here. Since this post is mostly about automated build and deployment, I won't go into any further detail on setting up a Wyam site.

You can preview the site with:

This will not only start up a lightweight server, but it will also keep track of your changes and automatically update them. This way you can keep your site running while writing and see the changes in real time.

You can build a site with:

This will build the site. The site contents are located in the output directory.

Since the output directory is in the .gitignore file, it won't be committed to your git repository. This is intentionally. We'll build the output directory fully automated on Azure DevOps later on.

Now that you've seen your site works it is time to deploy it.

Azure DevOps Setup

If you haven't already created an account on Azure DevOps you should do so now. It is completely free for small projects. Once you have an account you can create a new project. I've called mine johanvergeer.github.io . Creating an account and a new project is such a straight forward process I won't go into any detail on those.

Azure Pipelines on GitHub Marketplace

For the easiest integration between Azure DevOps and GitHub you should get the Azure Pipelines application on the GitHub Marketplace. Setup a plan and link your Azure DevOps project.

This will create a default yaml file named azure-pipelines.yml . We'll change this file later on to match our needs.

Before we start working on the azure-pipelines.yml file, we will create a Cake build script for our site. The advantage of using this Cake build script is that it can be reused on other locations.

Create a file named build.cake with the following contents:

Now you should install the bootstrapper by running the following in PowerShell.

Before doing a build, you should create 2 environment variables: GITHUB_USERNAME and GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN .

Be aware that the GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN is visible to anyone that has access to your environment variables.

Once you created the build file and installed the bootstrapper you can build, preview and deploy.

This last command should have deployed your Wyam site to GitHub Pages, so it's time to check whether it worked.

We'll use this Cake script to build the site on Azure DevOps, so make sure it works before you continue.

The beauty of this way of creating a build script is that once it works on your machine, it will also work on any other device or CI server.

azure-pipelines.yml

Now it's time to start creating our azure-pipelines.yml file so we can build our site on Azure DevOps. This is where the part comes in that might seem hard at first, but is very easy once you get the hang of it, so bear with me. I'll be going trough the azure-pipelines.yml file step by step and I'll show you the full file at the end.

Agent

In the first part of our file we'll define the Agent that will be used. All possible agents are listed on the Microsoft website.

Triggers

Next we're going to describe when a build pipeline should be triggered. If you're interested you can read more about Build Pipeline Triggers on the Microsoft website. For now we'll keep it fairly simple.

In the snippet above we described that all changes in the source branch should trigger a build, except when only the .gitignore or README.md are changed.

Steps

In this build pipeline we're going to define two steps. In the first step the site will be built using the Cake script. In the second step the output files will be deployed to GitHub Pages.

Deploy the site

In this first and only step we'll build and deploy the site, using the Cake plugin. Install this plugin and add the following snippet to azure-pipelines.yml as a child of steps:

In the script we set the target parameter to Deploy , which is equivalent to running .\build.ps1 -target Deploy on the command line. Furthermore we make the environment variable GITHUB_ACCESS_TOKEN reference the githubAccessToken secret variable we'll set in the next step. The GITHUB_USERNAME can be set to a static value, or you can use a variable on Azure DevOps.

GitHub Access Token

Next to the variables we defined before, this script also contains a secret, $(githubAccessToken) . The GitHub access token can be created in GitHub settings --> Developer Settings --> Personal Access Tokens . Click Generate new token, enter a Token description and select only the repo scope. Click Generate token and copy this token to a safe location.

This GitHub access token has to be added as a variable in Azure DevOps. Go to the pipeline and click Edit. The variables might be hard to find for the untrained eye. Right of the Run button, click the three dots and click Variables. Click + Add. Name should be githubAccessToken and the value should be the access token you copied from GitHub before. Next to the value you can click a padlock icon, which will make the value a secret.

The final file

One this I ofter miss when reading a tutorial is the full picture. So here is the full azure-pipelines.yml file.

Let's Deploy

Now that we're all setup, all we need to do is push to our GitHub repo, which will be picked up by Azure DevOps and a build will start.

Integrate Microsoft Teams with Azure DevOps

Microsoft Teams is a tool for team collaboration in Office 365. It goes far beyond a simple chat or video call client. This tool also helps enable teamwork with application integration and file sharing. This has become especially important in today?s world with more and more people looking for ways to effectively work from home.

When Azure DevOps is integrated with Microsoft Teams, you have a comprehensive collaboration experience across the full development lifecycle. Team members will be able to stay on top of projects with an array of notifications on actions such as pull requests and commits.

Getting Started

To integrate your Azure DevOps with Microsoft Teams, you?ll need an Office 365 account. If you don?t have one, you can sign up for a free trial here. Additionally, only Azure DevOps organizations in the same AAD tenant can be used to integrate with your Teams account. You will also need to have a team created within Microsoft Teams. For a step-by-step walk-through, check out this blog.

Integration

To get started with the integration, you?ll need to add a connector to your team channel. A connector allows your team to get content and updates from different services, including Twitter, GitHub, and, of course, Azure DevOps. After adding the connector, you?ll be prompted to configure it by selecting your organization, team, and project.

After your connector is configured, you can further customize how your Microsoft Teams channel shows Azure DevOps data. For example, you?re able to display your Kanban Board or even monitor your Azure Pipeline with a bot. This means you?ll be able to do more work from one single place instead of navigating through a bunch of different apps.

To get started, or for more information about Azure Pipelines, contact our experts here at DMS Group today.

Devops world 2019 - Кабринский Эдуард

Devops world 2019

Devops world 2019 Latest hot news Devops world 2019

Top take-aways from DevOps World 2019 | Opensource.com

Some of the biggest announcements from August's major DevOps event.

Subscribe now

Get the highlights in your inbox every week.

In August, I had the opportunity to join more than 2,000 people gathered in San Francisco for DevOps World 2019. Following are some of the most newsworthy announcements from the 150 breakout sessions and 16 workshops held over the four-day event.

Standardizing CI/CD

The greatest advantage and sometimes the most difficult challenge for our industry is the number of options we have for solving problems. Both are true for continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD); it seems as though there's a new product or tool every week. This means we have amazing flexibility and control in how we implement CI/CD for our products and organizations. It also means we have a flood of opinions about how CI/CD should be implemented. While there are some agreed-upon concepts (like shift-left), there is not much in the way of standards or best practices. That's not surprising. Continuously integrating features and bug fixes and continuously delivering those to a production environment for customer consumption are still fairly new.

Our struggles have not gone unnoticed, and in March, the Linux Foundation announced the formation of the Continuous Delivery Foundation. The CD Foundation's goals are to provide a vendor-neutral home for many of the tools we rely on and to provide support to DevOps practitioners around learning and developing industry best practices. To do this, the CD Foundation is bringing together some of the most-used and fastest-growing open source projects with the companies and users using their solutions. The first projects to join the foundation include Jenkins, Jenkins X, Spinnaker, and Tekton, and its members include CapitalOne, CircleCI, CloudBees, Google, Huawei, Netflix, and many more.

Creating a BOK for CI/CD

One of the most significant contributors to the success of agile and the theory of constraints is having a body of knowledge (BOK). A BOK is a collection of industry learnings that embody the principles of a professional domain. For example, the CD Foundation's focus will not be on standardizing the tools we use for CI/CD but on standardizing the collective knowledge about how to implement those tools and CI/CD in general.

To that end, I want to give a special shout-out to the DevOps Institute, a new member of the CD Foundation. Technology tools and practices can be complex, difficult to learn, and even harder to stay up-to-date on. The DevOps Institute is trying to tackle this by providing training and learning resources to help us stay skilled-up. Even better, it is launching an Ambassador Program to help spread its reach around the world. I encourage everyone to take a look and consider signing up.

Integrating DevOps metrics and reporting

It's doubtful we will see any slowdown around the release of new CI/CD tools, and the CD Foundation's and DevOps Institute's valuable initiatives won't affect that. I am also sure we will continue to find innovative ways to move code from our developers' laptops to our production systems (hopefully with some quality checks in between). So, how can we follow the flow of that code from laptop to production? Can we follow new code from a twinkle in a customer's eye to when we release their idea (and see their jumps for joy when we do)?

Even if all these tools are operating perfectly and our CI/CD implementation is the best in the world, we still have one piece missing: How can leadership, product owners, and developers take all the data these tools are generating and construct some knowledge from it? How can these individuals get a bird's-eye view of what features and bug fixes went out in the last 24 hours? How can they monitor the lead time for those changes?

We can use something along the lines of an ELK Stack to centralize our data collection and create pretty dashboards. We could also use custom shell scripts to drive our CI/CD instead of Jenkins, but I wouldn't advocate for that. Not that there is anything wrong with ELK, but I'm not a big data engineer, and trying to find what ties the logs of two completely different tools together does not sound fun to me.

There is a clear gap in tools that can do this off the shelf, and I hope we will see some new offerings in this area soon.

Learning with new book releases

If like me, you like to learn through reading, following are some new books I picked up at DevOps World that you may want to acquire to further your DevOps knowledge.

Azure devops xunit - Эдуард Кабринский

Run xUnit Tests inside Docker during an Azure DevOps CI Build

Running your build inside a Docker container has many advantages like platform independence and better testability for developers. These containers also bring more complexity though. In my last post, I showed how to set up the build inside a Docker container. Unfortunately, I didn?t get any test results or code coverage after the build succeeded. Today, I want to show how to get the test results when you run tests inside Docker and how to display them in Azure DevOps.

You can find the code of this demo on Github.

Run Tests inside Docker

Running unit tests inside a Docker container is more or less the same as building a project. First, I copy all my test projects inside the container using the COPY command:

After copying, I execute dotnet restore on all test projects.

Next, I set the label test to the build id. I will need this label later to identify the right layer of the container to copy the test results out of it. Then, I use dotnet test to run the tests in my three test projects. Additionally, I write the test result into the testresults folder and give them different names, e.g. test_results.trx.

That?s already everything I have to change to run the tests inside the container and generate test results. You don?t have to split up every command as I did but I would recommend doing so. This helps you finding problems and also is better for the caching which will increase the build time of your container. You could also use a hard-coded value for the label but if you have multiple builds running at the same time, the pipeline may publish the wrong test results since all builds have the same label name.

If you run the build, you will see the successful tests in the output of the build step.

The tests ran inside the Docker container

If you try to look at the Tests tab of the built-in Azure DevOps to see the test results, you won?t see the tab.

The build was successful but not Test Results are showing

The Tests tab is not displayed because Azure DevOps has no test results to display. Since I ran the tests inside the container, the results are also inside the container. To display them, I have to copy them out of the docker container and publish them.

Copy Test Results after you run Tests inside Docker

To copy the test results out of the container, first I have to pass the build id to the dockerfile. To do that, add the following line to the Docker build task:

Next, I use the following PowerShell task in the CI pipeline to create an intermediate container which contains the test results.

Docker creates a new layer for every command in the Dockerfile. I can access the layer (also called intermediate container) through the label I set during the build. The script selects the first intermediate container with the label test=true and then copies the content of the testresults folder to the testresults folder of the WorkingDirectory of the build agent. Then the container is removed. Next, I can take this testresults folder and publish the test results inside it.

Publish the Test Results

To publish the test results, I use the PublishTestResult task of Azure DevOps. I only have to provide the format of the results, what files contain results and, the path to the files. The YAML code looks as follows:

Run the CI pipeline again and after it is finished, you will see the Tests tab on the summary page. Click on it and you will see that all tests ran successfully. Azure DevOps even gives you a trophy for that.

The Tests tab is shown and you get even a trophy

I did the same for the OrderApi project, except that I replaced CustomerApi with OrderApi in the Dockerfile.

Conclusion

Docker containers are awesome. They can be used to run your application anywhere but also to build your application. This enables you to take your build definition and run it in Azure DevOps, as Github actions, or in Jenkins. You don?t have to change anything because the logic is encapsulated inside the Dockerfile. This flexibility comes with some challenges, for example, to display the test results of the unit tests. This post showed that it is pretty simple to get these results out of the container and display in Azure DevOps.

In my next post, I will show how you can also display the code coverage of your tests. You can find the code of this demo on Github.

Configure settings and manage your Azure Boards project

Azure Boards | Azure DevOps Server 2020 | Azure DevOps Server 2019 | TFS 2018 - TFS 2013

You can start using Azure Boards and configure resources as you go. No up-front work is required. Most settings define defaults.

As an organization owner or a project admin, there are a few items you might want to attend to at the start, to ensure a smooth operational experience. If you own a large organization, you'll want to consider additional tasks to structure your projects to support multiple teams or software development apps.

Specifically, consider performing one or more of the following tasks:

Add users to your project. To assign users to issues or tasks, you need to add them to your project.

Share your project vision. To support people who'll contribute to your project, provide them some directions via the project summary page, or through your project wiki.

Define area and iteration paths. If you work with Scrum methods or want to time-box your issues and tasks, you'll want to define Iteration Paths.

Customize your issues or tasks. If you need additional fields to track data, or other type of work item, you can customize your process.

Define area and iteration paths. If you work with Scrum methods or want to time-box your issues and tasks, you'll want to define Iteration Paths.

Customize your issues or tasks. If you need additional fields to track data, or other type of work item, you can customize your process.

Add users to your project

The first task is to ensure that all members of your organization or group are added to your organization and projects. For small groups, using Microsoft Accounts to add users to your organization and projects works fine. For details, see Add users.

Share your project vision and support collaboration

Each project has a summary page where you can share information through README files or by pointing to a project Wiki. To orient users who are new to your project and share established processes and procedures, we recommend that you set up your project summary page or provision a Wiki.

Define area and iteration paths for work tracking

If you support several products or feature areas, you can assign issues and tasks (Basic process) or user stories and tasks (Agile process) to a feature area by defining Area Paths. To assign work items to specific time intervals, also known as sprints, you'll want to configure Iteration Paths. To use the Scrum toolsРІ??sprint backlogs, taskboards, and team capacityРІ??you need to configure several sprints. For an overview, see About areas and iteration paths.

Iterations

Areas

Customize your work item types

You and your team can start using all work-tracking tools immediately after you create a project. But often, one or more users want to customize the experience to meet one or more business needs. Although you can customize the process easily through the user interface, you'll want to establish a methodology for who will manage the updates and evaluate requests.

By default, organization owners and users added to the Project Collection Administrators security group are granted permission to create, edit, and manage processes used to customize the work-tracking experience. If you want to lock down who is able to perform these tasks, you can set permissions at the organization-level to Deny.

To learn more, see these articles:

Review and update notifications

A number of notifications are predefined for each project. Notifications are based on subscription rules. Subscriptions arise from the following areas:

Out-of-the-box or default subscriptions.

Team notifications, managed by a team administrator.

Project notifications, managed by a member of the Project Administrators group.

If users believe they're getting too many notifications, they can opt out of a subscription.

Install and manage extensions

To add new features and capabilities to Azure Boards, install extensions from the Azure DevOps Marketplace. You can install free, preview, or paid

To learn more, see Install free extensions for Azure DevOps. To learn about building your own Azure DevOps extensions, see developing and publishing extensions.

Enable or remove services from the user interface

To simplify the web portal user interface, you can disable select services. If you use a project only to log bugs, then you can remove all services except for Boards.

This example shows that Test Plans has been disabled:
