Artifacts in azure devops - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Artifacts in azure devops

Create an Organization level feed in Azure Artifacts

A while ago the Azure DevOps team has removed the option to create "Organization level feeds" in Azure Artifacts. This move matches many previous efforts to isolate "projects" in Azure DevOps to make things less confusing and easier to migrate.

Jesse Houwing

The official guidance is to create Project level feeds, unless you know what you're doing. And to discourage users, you need to create a new feed using the REST API instead.

Exactly how, the issue doesn't explain. So let me show you how I did it.

1. Create a Bogus Feed

Navigate to the Artifacts Hub and hit the + Create Feed button. Enter a bogus name for the feed. Don't hit create yet!

Then open the Developer Tools in Chrome or Edge. Go to the Network tab and hit Create to create the feed:

2. Capture the POST call

From the Network tab, find the POST call to the _api/Packaging/Feeds endpoint and copy it as PowerShell (or the kind of scripting language you're familiar with).

3. Change the call to target the Organization level

Change the following elements:

Remove the Project GUID from the POST URL ant the Path header:

Remove the Project element from the payload

Change the temporary-bogus-name to the desired value

Add -UseBasicParsing if, like me, you don't have Internet Explorer installed

Don't copy my values verbatim. The Identity Descriptors are specific to you account and you need a valid Bearer Token.

Now run the code and: there's your feed!

Note: this example doesn't change the authentication headers, the Bearer Token will expire, breaking the code. You can replace then Bearer Token with a base64 encoded PAT string.

Rename your master branch to something better

I just went through my GitHub repositories to rid them of the master branches. It was a relatively simple process that took me about an hour or 2 for all

Integration between Trello and Azure DevOps

I'd like to integrate Trello with Azure DevOps.

The idea would be to use Trello as the area where the Business can raise ideas, gather requirements, write and task out stories, and prioritise them.

We would then plan out a sprint which would be moved to Azure DevOps through some sort of automation.

We would have a Live Board on Trello, this board would have some lists such as Sprint Backlog, In Progress and Done. These lists would mirror the status of stories in the sprint on Azure DevOps.

Therefore when a story changes status on Azure DevOps it is automatically moved to the corresponding list on the Live Board on Trello.

Has anyone attempted something similar?

One or two-way flow of information between Trello and Azure DevOps?

2 answers

@mig I've done this extensively with G-Suite using Google Apps Script:

The principle would be the same, so although I can't give any specific advice the principle is sound. You set up a web hook and post back and forth using the Trello API.

It's reliable and good to work with.

The caveat I found was that Trello sends a LOT of notifications, so it would flood a Google Apps Script deployed as a web app and it would just start dropping requests randomly. As such, I put a little NodeJS web receiver that dumps the notifications into a beanstalkd queue and then drip feeds them out to the Apps Script URL:

The other thing is that an Apps Script URL won't respond to an HTTP HEAD request, it sends a 404 so Trello will never accept a native apps script URL as a webhook. To get around this I pipe it through an nginx setup that will respond 200 to a HEAD and pass everything else through (also in the above project).

I don't know if any of those same problems would arise in your journey to integrate with Azure but those are things to watch out for that presented challenges in the early days of building Trellinator.

You might also find that it's useful to do a port of Trellinator to whatever server side language you're using. The trellinator-libs API wraps Trello's API in a much more convenient/easy to use fashion that has a "butler-like" syntax:

The reason being that I specifically wrote it to port about 1600 Butler commands to following a year's worth of Butler consulting. Even though it's written for Apps Script it's still just basically javascript so if you wanted to, you could probably create the same thing to run in Node and it would speed up your interactions with the Trello API considerably. Alternatively you could just use the same class structure/methods as a template for creating your own API in whatever server side language you prefer.

Azure devops databricks - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops databricks

Azure devops databricks National news in english Azure devops databricks

Blog & Company Updates

In this post in our Databricks mini-series, I?d like to talk about integrating Azure DevOps within Azure Databricks. Databricks connects easily with DevOps and requires two primary things. First is a Git, which is how we store our notebooks so we can look back and see how things have changed. The next important feature is the DevOps pipeline. The pipeline allows you to deploy notebooks to different environments.

In my video included in this post, I?ll show you how to save Databricks notebooks using Azure DevOps Git and how to deploy your notebooks using a DevOps pipeline. Be sure to check it out. Here?s a breakdown:

Saving Notebooks:

We start by launching a workspace in our Databricks service. You?ll see that my cluster has been started.

To get the Git integration to work, we click on our Admin Console. Once there, we click on Advanced. Be sure that the Notebook Git Versioning is enabled.

Under User Settings, go into Git integration and choose Azure DevOps as the Git provider.

Click on Connect to our Azure Storage Account to open any notebook. You will see a green check mark in the top left that shows our Git is synced.

We know this is the case as we already have our DevOps account open (dev.Azure.com) and in here you have a variety of features, such as repos and pipelines.

To create a new repo, simply click on repos and then New Repository from the menu. In my demo I have a repo created and this contains a series of files, in my case, these are notebooks. Since I?ve saved this in my DevOps account, it comes up as Git synced in my Azure Storage Account.

If you open a notebook and see that it is not linked, then you must click where it says ?not linked? to get the Git preferences box. Select ?link? as the status, which will pre-default to your notebook link, save it and it will now show as synced. This is a nice feature for storing your database objects.

Pipelines:

Pipelines within the DevOps framework allow you to deploy code seamlessly.

I created a pipeline in my demo and when I open it, I click on the edit button to see the contents.

You?ll see I created a pipeline and it uses a Windows Server that resides in Windows in a pool. When this job is started it will retrieve the next available Windows Server, do its thing, and then go back into the pool.

Next, I click on Get Sources and select Azure Repo Git. I?m connected to the Azure Databricks repository and our master branch.

Now I need to set up our Agent. For the DevOps we had to install a Microsoft extension (Configure Databricks CLI) as it?s not there out of the box. (See my demo for more detail on this.)

I need to specify the workspace URL and then my access token. To get this token, go to User Settings and click Generate new token. A tip here is be sure to write down or store your token ID as once it?s gone, it?s gone!

The next thing we need is to deploy our notebook in our workflow by clicking on that link, specify the notebooks folder and the route. To kick off this job you simply need to click on Pipeline from the menu on the left and click Run Pipeline. In my demo we are just taking our notebooks from Dev and pushing them back to Dev.

Strategically, we could have a test, UAT and production environment. We could specify each of those server names after they are configured and push to those seamlessly, so it cuts down on the administrative tasks.

I find that the DevOps pipeline, as well as the release pipeline, is the best thing to come around in a long time. It?s a tremendous asset to have in your arsenal. We use it a lot, not just for Databricks, but for Data Factory, Key Vault Storage Account as well as other things.

Again, take a look at my demo for a detailed walkthrough of Databricks integration to Git and the DevOps pipeline. If you want to discuss more about Azure Databricks or have questions about Azure or the Power Platform, we?d love to help.

Azure devops repository permissions - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure DevOps Security & Permissions REST API

Every Few months I notice the following Saga repeats. I face a challenge where I need to programmatically manage security aspects of Azure DevOps resources (like Repository, Pipeline, Environment etc.). I do lookup the Azure DevOps REST API documentation, realize that the Permissions & Security API?s are notoriously complicated and inadequately documented. So, I begin with F8 to kick off the Development tools for Browser and intercepting HTTP requests. Trying to guess what?s payloads are exchanged and try to come up with appropriate HTTP requests myself. However strange it might sound, usually this method works for me (actually worked almost all the time). But it?s a painful and time-consuming process. Recently I had to go through this process one more time and I promised to myself that once I am done, I will write a Blog post about it and put the code in a GitHub repository ? so next time I will save myself some time & pain. That?s exactly what this post is all about.

Security & Permission REST API

As I have said, the security REST API is relatively complicated and to inadequately documented. Typically, each family of resources (work items, Git repositories, etc.) is secured using a different namespace. The first challenge is to find out the namespace IDs.

Then each security namespace contains zero or more access control lists. Each access control list contains a token, an inherit flag and a set of zero or more access control entries. Each access control entry contains an identity descriptor, an allowed permissions bitmask and a denied permissions bitmask.

Tokens are arbitrary strings representing resources in Azure DevOps. Token format differs per resource type; however, hierarchy and separator characters are common between all tokens. Now, where do you find these tokens format? Well, I mostly find them by intercepting the Browser HTTP payloads. To save me from future efforts, I have created a .net Object model around the security namespace IDs, permissions and tokens ? so when I consume those libraries, I can ignore these lower level elements and have a higher order APIs to manage permissions. You can look into the GitHub repository to learn about it. However, just to make it more fun to use, I have spent a bit time to create a Manifest file (Yes, stolen from Kubernetes world) where I can get my future job done only by writing YAML files ? as oppose to .net/C# codes.

Instructions to use

The repository containes two projects (once is a Library ? produced a DLL and another is the console executable application) and the console executable is named as azdoctl.exe .

The idea is to create a manifest file (yaml format) and apply the changes via the azdoctl.exe :

Manifest file

You need to create a manifest file to descibe your Azure DevOps project and permissions. The format of the manifest file is in yaml (and idea is borrowed from Kubernetes manufest files.)

Schema

Here?s the schema of the manifest file:

Manifest file starts with the team project name and description. Each manifest file can have only one team project definition.

Teams

Next, we can define teams for the project with following yaml block:

Here we can create teams and assign admins and members to them. All the references (name and ids) must be valid in Azure Active Directory. Ids are Object ID for group or users in Azure Active directory.

Repository

Next, we can define the repository ? that must be created and assigned permissions to.

Again, you can apply an Azure AD group with very fine-grained permissions to each repository that you want to create.

List of all the allowed permissions:

Environment

You can create environments and assign permissions to them with following yaml block.

Build and Release (pipeline) folders

You can also create Folders for build and release pipelines and apply specific permission during bootstrap. That way teams can have fine grained permissions into these folders.

Build Pipeline Folders

Here?s the snippet for creating build folders.

And, for the release pipelines:

Once you have the yaml file defined, you can apply it as described above.

Conclusion

That?s pretty much it for today. By the way,

The code is provided as-is, with MIT license. You can use it, replicate it, modify it as much as you wish. I would appreciate if you acknowledge the usefulness, but that?s not enforced. You are free to use it anyway you want.

And, that also means, the author is not taking any responsibility to provide any guarantee or such.

Choose a method to securely access the code in Azure Repos, Azure DevOps Server 2019, or Team Foundation Server (TFS) Git repositories. Use these credentials with Git at a command prompt. These credentials also work with any Git client that supports HTTPS or SSH authentication. Limit the scope of access and revoke these credentials when they're no longer needed.

Authentication Type

When to use

Secure?

Ease of setup

Additional tools

Personal access tokens

You need an easy to configure credential or need configurable access controls

Very secure (when using HTTPS)

Easy

Optional (Git credential managers)

SSH

You already have SSH keys set up, or are on macOS or Linux

Very secure

Intermediate

Windows users will need the SSH tools included with Git for Windows

Personal access tokens

Personal access tokens (PATs) give you access to Azure DevOps and Team Foundation Server (TFS), without using your username and password directly. These tokens have an expiration date from when they're created. You can restrict the scope of the data they can access. Use PATs to authenticate if you don't already have SSH keys set up on your system or if you need to restrict the permissions that are granted by the credential.

Use Git Credential Manager to generate tokens

The Git Credential Manager Core is an optional tool that makes it easy to create PATs when you're working with Azure Repos. Sign in to the web portal, generate a token, and then use the token as your password when you're connecting to Azure Repos.

PATs are generated on demand when you have the credential manager installed. The credential manager creates the token in Azure DevOps and saves it locally for use with the Git command line or other client.

Current versions of Git for Windows include the Git credential manager as an optional feature during installation.

SSH key authentication

Key authentication with SSH works through a public and private key pair that you create on your computer. You associate the public key with your username from the web. Azure DevOps will encrypt the data sent to you with that key when you work with Git. You decrypt the data on your computer with the private key, which is never shared or sent over the network.

SSH is a great option if you've already got it set up on your systemРІ??just add a public key to Azure DevOps and clone your repos using SSH. If you don't have SSH set up on your computer, you should use PATs and HTTPS instead - it's secure and easier to set up.

OAuth

Use OAuth to generate tokens for accessing REST APIs. The Accounts and Profiles APIs support only OAuth.

SSH authentication to generate encryption keys when you use Linux, macOS, or Windows running Git for Windows and can't use Git credential managers or personal access tokens for HTTPS authentication.

DevOps

Streamline and Automate Resource Creation to Accelerate Application Delivery

Organizations of all kinds find scaling IT infrastructure to accommodate rapid application delivery or rapid increases in usage to be a challenge. A little over a decade ago, DevOps came to fruition seeking to facilitate aggressive resource creation. In a nutshell, the DevOps integrates development, operations, and infrastructure teams to expedite service launches. Silos are eliminated across the IT business unit. Cross-functional assembly lines, known as pipelines, are created across departments, using sophisticated tools and automation techniques to speed up application launches.

The challenges implicit in supplying compliant infrastructure in time for new application launches are prevalent hiccups slowing down IT organizations that follow traditional software development and infrastructure management principles. Besides struggling with availability, infrastructure and operational groups often lag when it comes to accommodating network, identity and access management (IAM) and the security changes required by new applications.

Capabilities

Maven Wave implements DevOps schemes for customers that need help automating cloud infrastructure consumption and deploying applications on existing traditional infrastructure.

Our method helps enterprises:

Build underlying code frameworks and pipelines to facilitate automated delivery of assets

Streamline the execution of required governance checks, such as automated testing, security reviews, and alerting and monitoring

Manage core cultural changes cross-functionally that promote continuous improvement by breaking down divisions that exist between operations, development, and infrastructure teams

Refocus them singularly toward a rapid feedback and response regiment

There?s no official DevOps playbook. It?s a cultural practice that is continually evolving. Every implementation should be customized according to the practitioner?s unique cultural DNA in order to be effective and fully optimized. But IT organizations too frequently don?t know where to start. That?s where Maven Wave comes in.
