<p>In a world where the skill gap between software developers and IT engineers is increasing at an alarming rate bringing down productivity and efficiency, DevOps emerged as a saviour and bridged the gap between the two silos. This comes at a time when automation has created a fast-paced market with new deployments occurring by the second. DevOps is not a technology used to transform productivity rates, it is rather a strategy to ensure better synchronisation between the ?Dev?elopers? and ?Op?erations team.</p>
<p>DevOps would not have taken off if the current market scenario did not depend on software development. Additionally, DevOps relies heavily on some sequential steps, which go all the way from software development to its release, which makes the need for automation in the domain a growing need. Automation in DevOps starts right from the product planning stage, where the Devs and the Ops need to work with each other to produce the output required by both: customer satisfaction.</p>
<p><strong>The Working</strong></p>
<p>DevOps Automation incorporates elements from an entire spectrum of automated assistance. Any application defines its viability by its run time. <strong>Auto Scaling</strong>, a method used in cloud computing, enhances the application?s run time by using only the required amount of computational resources, i.e. ?scaling? them up or down as required. But that is not possible if the code is not suited to its purpose. This brings in <strong>Code Quality Integration</strong>, through which the resultant is the combination of quality code with the consumer?s needs. This code produced requires a lot of management. Starting with <strong>Version Control Management</strong> wherein a ?database? is created to recall older versions to keep track of all modifications made to the software. A proper database is needed to incorporate new team members and keep efficiency in place. Each new version requires efficient management throughout its life cycle called <strong>Application Lifecycle Management (ALM)</strong>.</p>
<p>The life-cycle of code begins the moment its planning starts. That is followed by its building, testing and release. The Operations team then takes over by releasing the code and continues monitoring it. In short, ALM governs the changes, modifications and development of the code produced. Now, all codes need proper infrastructure and software configuration to avoid any future issues. These are tackled by <strong>Infrastructure</strong> and <strong>Software Configuration Management</strong> respectively. Any change required in the software follows only after some amount of balance is maintained between the Devs and the Ops.</p>
<p>This comes under <strong>Change Management</strong>. But any change can produce defects, and these defects can hinder the working of a program<strong>. Defect Management</strong> takes over in this scenario and paves the path for the seamless working of the produced software. This seamless working can be more efficient if the application can go through its entire runtime without any external aids. This is guaranteed by <strong>Auto Deployment Management</strong> which is an important aspect as most applications run on their own without any hindrances. This deployment depends on how the application is built. A well-built application will not cause problems, will run systematically and, overall achieve the target it is supposed to. The build, too, needs to be automatic and in any case, <strong>Build Automation</strong> takes care of the same. It provides better productivity and adaptable code.</p>
<p>Now, even if such an ideal application is created, the big question is ?How big is it?? Any honest consumer would agree to the fact that a big application can be a nuisance for most as it can take a longer time to deploy than its tinier counterparts. This brings in <strong>Binary Storage Management</strong>, which as the name suggest reduces the clutter and optimises the space being consumed. If all goes well, one will move on to focus upon the time consumed to complete the application. New features and products need to be rolled out as quick as possible to reduce the competition faced by them. Here, <strong>Deployment Promotion</strong> guarantees there is a visible reduction in production time. With a successful product deployed on time, it requires continuous adjustments to better work with the scenario it is built for. These changes come under <strong>Continuous Integration</strong> which aids in keeping the code up-to-date by merging it with the previous ones stored in a central memory unit.</p>
<p><strong>Concluding Words</strong></p>
<p>In the end, we come to <strong>Reporting</strong> and <strong>Log Management</strong>. All failures, production concerns, modifications, and frequency of new rollouts need thorough investigation and documentation. Reporting of such elements helps better the service of a company and maintaining a log for the same keeps a track of past events, including failures, and deciphers the next steps to be taken.</p>

<p>Once you have created a build environment, this will check-in a few files. We're interested in the AXModulesBuild.proj file. We'll want this file to be in the root of all branches, on the off change we need to change it for that specific branch. This is rare but we can plan ahead just in case. Below is an example of where to place the file and an example branching structure.</p>

<p>Next, We'll need to create a projects.xml file in the projects directory for each branch, if we don't have one already. It will look similar to this:</p>

<p>Setting up your code branches is important and its crucial that you have a plan before you get started. Here are two examples:</p>

<p>Exhibit A is an example of each developer having their own branch. Each branch would need to have a gated check-in definition for each and all changesets would need to be merged from each dev branch to DevRelease as well as periodic "back merges" from DevRelease to each dev branch. This can be advantageous when each developer is working on major features that have no dependencies on what others may be working on. However, there is a fair amount of technical management to make sure all of the code is where it should be. In AX 2012, this structure made lots of sense but in D365 it is less advantageous and represents and older style of working.</p>
<p>Exhibit B is an example of 1 developer branch, 1 trunk with no devRelease branch and a release branch. This is more inline with modern practices as all developers will be working against the same workspace. With gated check-ins setup, no one should be able to break a model or package as their changes will be shelved, built and committed if that shelveset passes the quality bar set (ie, compile or compile and test). However, gated check-ins are critical for this to work as gated check-ins are the mechanism that prevents garbage from being accepted. Depending on the volume of check-ins, you may have to spin up additional build VMs but that would be rare.</p>
<p>The gated check-in definition in Azure DevOps may be different for each branch. As a for instance, in Dev related check-in definitions, I typically do not deploy reports. However, I will do this in trunk and release branches.</p>
<h1>Creating A Pipeline Definition</h1>
<p>We'll assume you already have a build pipeline definition from the creation of your build machine called "Main".</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Go to pipelines, click on ?Unified Operations platform ? Build Main?, click on the 3 dots in the upper left-hand corner then select clone.</li>
<li>Select the cloned pipeline, click edit and give it a name for the branch you will be building; ie, Release.</li>
<li>Select ?get sources?</li>
<li>Change the server path to be the path for the branch you want to build</li>
<li>click on the Triggers tab and select "enabled gated check-in".</li>

<p>I have been using Git for a while. In the beginning, I copied the codes to the Azure DevOps via browser then cloned them to computers. Never have problems. Recently, I was preparing a presentation about version control to the team. I want to show the team how to push a local repo to the Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>I was stuck as I was thinking the push would create a new repo in the Azure DevOps. All articles and training courses I found showed how to clone them to computers but none of them showing push from a local repo. I finally figured it out and want to share with you the steps!</p>

<li>In the local computer, create a folder where you will save the codes. You can also create a file but it is optional.</li>

<p>You may have had your fill of Nokia analysis and features, but I'd like to draw your attention to one more - one that's very special. The Finnish daily <em>Helsingin Sanomat</em> has published a report based on 15 interviews with senior staff. It reads like the transcript to an Oscar-winning documentary where the narrative thread is held together entirely by the talking heads.</p>
<p>The report is very long on detail and short on opinionising - and for those of you fascinated by technology and bureaucracy, something quite interesting emerges. What we learn is that the company's current predicament was fated in 2003, when a re-organisation split Nokia's all-conquering mobile phones division into three units. The architect was Jorma Ollila, Nokia's most successful ever CEO, and a popular figure - who steered the company from crisis in 1992 to market leadership in mobile phones - and who as chairman oversaw the ousting of Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo this year.</p>
<p>In Ollila's reshuffle, Nokia made a transition from an agile, highly reactive product-focused company to one that managed a matrix, or portfolio. The phone division was split into three: Multimedia, Enterprise and Phones, and the divisions were encouraged to compete for staff and resources. The first Nokia made very few products to a very high standard. But after the reshuffle, which took effect on 1 January 2004, the in-fighting became entrenched, and the company being increasingly bureaucratic. The results were pure Dilbert material.</p>
<p>For example, have a look at the section which starts here, with "A novel application or feature has been dreamed up that should end up installed in a phone a year from now. This is the beginning of a long day's journey to nowhere."</p>
<p>Innovations produced by the R&D department and designers could no longer be implemented quickly - one example should have taken just a couple of weeks, but instead took months to be incorporated into phones.</p>
<p>Executive managers interviewed note how the result was a large number of indifferent products.</p>
<p>Another consequence was also predictable. It's what political writers call the most morally corrupting effect of bureaucracies: nobody takes responsibility. With the three divisions covering their own backsides, nobody wanted to make the long-term strategic investments necessary to keep platform software up-to-date. This resulted in the Symbian user interface being neglected. Nokia had developed a touch screen UI called Hildon, which became Series 90, starting in 2001 - and that should have been the basis for Nokia's iPhone competitors today. But it was canned in 2005.</p>
<p>"We produced a quite enormous number of rather average products. It would have been smarter to make fewer - and better," says one interviewee.</p>
<p>The masterplan was ripped up by Ollila's successor, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, in 2007, but by then the units had become enormously wealthy fiefdoms, and many of the problems remained. Lots of people could veto a decision, but the leadership required to drive one through was absent. Nokia's product pipeline all but dried up in 2009.</p>

<p>Home ? Article ? Why the New DevOps Center in Salesforce Is Awesome for Admins</p>
<p>Whether you are a new Salesforce Admin or someone who has built on the platform for years, the good news is that as you create and implement functionality, your skills will continue to grow. For many years as a Salesforce Admin, I worked hard to learn best practices for feature management and rolling out new functionality. But one thing I always struggled with was release management. Building new features in a sandbox and then using Change Sets just wasn?t my jam. Not to mention if I was collaborating with a developer friend on an app or my company used a Source Control System.</p>
<p>Now, with the DevOps Center in Salesforce, managing changes is about to become awesome!</p>
<h3>What is the DevOps Center in Salesforce?</h3>
<p>The new DevOps Center is the central application to be delivered with our new DevOps solution. The DevOps Center will provide an improved UI-based experience for change and release management that will not only deliver a modern and robust experience for declarative developers and admins but also allow for collaboration between declarative and programmatic developers throughout the DevOps process.</p>
<h3>How do admins work with the DevOps Center?</h3>
<p>It?s now easier to manage changes, collaborate with team members, and ensure synchronized source. The integrated experience in the DevOps Center is centered on the concept of a Work Item, which is like a ?ticket? and is where the requirements for the change to be made are defined. Changes are tracked against the Work Item as they move through the flow from Planning, to Development, to Review, to Testing, to Release. From a Work Item, you can easily launch a development environment (a Developer Sandbox). You only have to log into the sandbox once in DevOps Center to establish a secure connection using an Oauth-based authentication. After that, you can simply click Open in the Work Item to open the connected sandbox.</p>
<p>In the past, you would use Change Sets to move changes from your sandbox to production. In the DevOps Center, we?ve greatly simplified and improved the experience of managing changes. Changes are tracked automatically for you as you do your development, so you simply need to click a ?Pull Changes? button in the DevOps Center to identify and manage the changed source files. No more manual tracking of changes as you?re making them, nor sifting through lists of components to find the ones you want to migrate!</p>
<p>Once the changes have all been pulled and shown to you in the UI, you still have the ability to decide which of those files you really want to migrate forward in the process. So, for instance, if a change you made also resulted in a change to a Profile and you don?t want to migrate the Profile, or you were experimenting with changes before you settled on the final implementation and therefore don?t want to migrate all the files that you?d changed along the way, you can simply leave those unselected when you confirm the components to be migrated.</p>

<p>Once you have selected the list of changes to move forward, you can proceed with the next step: committing the changes. This is where some more magic happens! When you commit your changes, behind the scenes, the tool commits and pushes the metadata source files into a branch in the connected GitHub repository, and also creates a Pull Request. You can make as many commits as you need to as you?re working on the Work Item, and then when you?re ready to move the changes forward in the process, you can simply move the Work Item to the Ready for Review state. When you do this, behind the scenes a Pull Request is created in GitHub, where team members can review your changes and make comments. You don?t have to run any GitHub commands directly (or really even know anything about GitHub) to be able to push these changes into the source control system. The source control system can now serve as the main point of collaboration, review, and synchronization between team members. Pretty awesome, huh!?</p>
<h3>What does this mean for admins?</h3>
<p>We?ve recently released a limited-audience Developer Preview release that includes the functionality described above, allowing you to tracking and managing changes in a modern UI, seamless integration with a version control system, and deployments based on a centralized source of truth. In subsequent releases, starting with a limited, but expanded-audience Pilot in the January ?21 timeframe, you can look forward to additional capabilities in the DevOps Center to provide a fully integrated UI-based experience, including test and review processes and deployment management directly from the DevOps Center. And that means following deployment best practices and collaborating with developer friends will get a whole lot more awesome!</p>

<h1>Azure DevOps Pipeline Conditional Flow with Manual Intervention</h1>
<p>I am wondering if Azure DevOps has the ability to do conditional flow as part of a release definition.</p>
<p><strong><em>My use case:</em></strong> I have a PowerShell script that deploys a SQL Server DACPAC to create or update a database. Sometimes this deployment will fail because a change was made that could potentially cause data loss. Instead of absolutely failing the deployment, I would like to trigger a manual intervention for a DBA to review the changes. If they resume, I would like to attempt the deployment again, but this time with a flag that will ignore potential data loss issues.</p>
<p>Finally, if that second db deployment attempt is successful, I would like the flow to continue back to the rest of the deployment tasks.</p>
<p><strong><em>Here is a general flow diagram:</em></strong></p>

<p><ul>
<li>If the db deployment fails, but the manual intervention resumes and succeeds, I want the entire deployment to be marked as succeeded.</li>
<li>I want the flow after resuming an intervention to merge back into existing tasks that would be run on db deployment success. Corollary: I do not want to maintain dual flows with identical tasks.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>I am using the Designer (Web UI) and not YAML for all my current builds/releases, but I am also interested if YAML has a solution for this.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps has a section for Conditions, but I did not find that particularly helpful. The number of conditions seems limited. It also looks like variables can be set on jobs, but this appears to be only available with YAML.</p>
<p>Is there a way to set up the conditionals at the end of phases/jobs or tasks to achieve this branching behavior?</p>
<h2>2 Answers 2</h2>
<p>@Shayki's answer was a large portion of what I was looking for (thanks!), but I was eventually able to figure out a solution that met all of my requirements. It involves a less than ideal use of the Release Description to propagate state between jobs.</p>
<p>The updated flow diagram looks like this:</p>

<p>I was originally thinking of the conditional flow as an if else statement, but it is really more of multiple if statements where the condition is the same. If flag is set, do X; if flag is set, do Y; etc.</p>
<h2>Details</h2>
<p>Instead of running the agentless job when a previous condition fails (which would result in the entire deployment failing, a violation of one of my requirements), I created a custom condition that the agentless job runs as:</p>

<p>If all the previous tasks have succeeded, and if the Release.ReleaseDescription variable contains the string defined in the _dbDeployErrors variable, then this job will execute (and the manual intervention task inside of it).</p>
<p>The _dbDeployErrors variable isn't too important, I set it to ;DB_DEPLOY_ERRORS_$EnvironmentName . The main idea is that, at least with the Web Designer, there is no way to pass information from an agent job to an agentless job. So I wrote a powershell script which uses the Get Release and Update Release Azure DevOps REST API to update the Release Description parameter on the release. This allows me to pass information to the next job in the deployment.</p>
<p>The basic steps for setting this flag are:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Run the db deployment</li>
<li>If the deployment has errors, do not fail task, but instead set an agent variable</li>
<li>Next task determines if the variable is set, and if so calls the Update Release API to append the flag to the release description</li>
<li>Future jobs and tasks can now analyze the state of the release description variable</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p><em>Note: I set an agent variable instead of making the API call from the db-deploy script so that I can keep my deploy script clean and maintainable. I move the responsibility of calling the API to a dedicated script instead.</em></p>
<p>If the Manual Intervention is resumed, then the third job executes as an agent job. It will attempt to deploy the db again, but this time it sets a -Force flag on the script to ignore possible data loss (it was approved by the one who performed the intervention). If this deployment succeeds, then a quick cleanup is run to call the Update Release API and clear the flag from the release description. Finally, the other tasks can resume as normal.</p>
<p>Here is what the tasks in my final release definition looks like:</p>

<p>Redgate Software is investing $10million to acquire and develop Flyway, a software tool used to migrate databases across platforms with ease.</p>

<p>There have been an estimated 23 million downloads of the free community edition of Flyway, and a growing number of commercial customers are using its paid-for editions, leading to significant income growth over the last 12 to 18 months.</p>
<p>Cambridge Business Park-based Redgate sees the acquisition as key to accelerating its plans to help customers include the database in the development process known as DevOps.</p>
<p>Redgate is a pioneer of the practice, which combines software development with IT operations through collaboration between teams to shorten the system development life cycle and help roll out fixes and updates more rapidly.</p>
<p>The company is already the leading Microsoft SQL Server tools vendor, but the acquisition of Flyway will enable customers incorporate database development into DevOps whatever platform they use.</p>
<p>Simon Galbraith, CEO and co-founder of Redgate, said: ?We?ve spent the last five years developing a portfolio of SQL Server tools that enable developers to include the database in DevOps, and we want to give those same advantages to every developer on any platform. With Flyway, we?ve just taken a huge leap forward in that direction.?</p>
<p>Flyway was originally developed as an open source project by Axel Fontaine to make database migrations easy across platforms, from Oracle to MySQL, PostgreSQL to Amazon Redshift.</p>
<p>Axel will now work on Flyway alongside a development team at Redgate.</p>

<p>He said: ?Redgate has years of experience in the database market and also has the resources to further develop and enhance Flyway many times faster than I can. This will make both the community and the commercial editions better for everyone.?</p>
<p>Redgate has pledged to maintain the free version of Flyway, available under the open source Apache v2 licence, and said it is committed to supporting and growing the open source community that has aided its development.</p>
<p>The company has significant credentials in supporting open source software. It already offers free versions of tools that work with open source software, like MySQL Compare, and was backed the development of Glimpse, the open source diagnostic platform for the web.</p>
<p>It also provides financial and development backing for other tools aiding database development, including tSQLt, the database unit testing framework, SQL Cover, the code coverage tool for T-SQL, and tSQLt Test Adapter, the Visual Studio tool for discovering and executing tSQLt tests.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Redgage intends to continue its focus on extending its portfolio of SQL Server tools, used by 91 per cent of businesses in the Fortune 100.</p>
<p>Simon said: ?Our work on the SQL Server platform is the foundation for everything we do. The Flyway acquisition now opens the door to seeing where that knowledge can be used to develop tools for other database platforms, based on what works best with SQL Server first.?</p>
