<p>If it's all grayed-out, it's probably (except if it's a rights management issue) because you're trying to modify one of the standard process, which you can't do. You have to create a new process that inherits from the process you're using</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Go to the root of VSTS by clicking on the black VSTS logo on the top-left corner</li>
<li>Click on the parameters wheel</li>
<li>Click on Process</li>
<li>If you already have a custom process, click on it, otherwise, click on the ". " menu of the process you're currently using and select "Create inherited process</li>
<li>Select the work item type that you want to modify and do the modifications there</li>
<li>Go back to your project settings and change the process used to the new inherited process you created</li>
</ol>
</p>

<p>There are two types of processes in VSTS:</p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>System processes</strong> ?Scrum, Agile, and CMMI? which are locked from being changed.</li>
<li><strong>Inherited processes</strong>, which you can customize and that inherit definitions from the system process from which they were created. System processes are owned and updated periodically by Microsoft. Any updates made to a system process will automatically update your inherited process.</li>
</ul>

<p>If you want to customize a system process, it's not allowed, you have to create an inherited process. Also, you must be a member of the <strong>Project Collection Administrators</strong> group, the organization owner, or be granted explicit permissions to edit, create, or manage a specific process and to create a project.</p>

<p>I'll only be covering InspectCode and DupFinder, I had some issues with the latest version (2019.3) so I'm using 2019.2.4</p>
<p>For this guide, we're using a basic build pipeline running on a hosted agent. <br />The tasks include:</p>

<li>Restoring dependencies with Nuget</li>

<h3>Fetching the ReSharper Command Line Tools</h3>
<p>You can store the ReSharper CLT wherever you wish. Your repo, Azure Blob Storage but for this example I used GitHub.</p>
<p style="clear: both">Downloading the repo as a zip file is easy enough. <br /><img style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 5px 0;" src="https://blog.lionelchetty.dev/content/images/2020/02/Compare-The-Store-CI---PowerShell-Task-1-compressor.png" /></p>
<p>Then extracting it into the current working directory.</p>
<p>The end result being.</p>
<p>I wrote a bad PowerShell script to help to with invoking DupFinder and InspectCode. <br />It takes 3 parameters:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>$SolutionFilePath, path to solution file. This is required.</li>
<li>$OutputDirPath, path to directory for saving the reports. <br />Default value = '..\output'</li>
<li>$ExcludedExtensions, comma-separated values of the file extensions to exclude from analysis. <br />Default value ='js,css'</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Exclusions work with a DotSettings file, which is a ReSharper/Rider file but the script will create it for you.</p>
<h3>Invoking DupFinder and InspectCode</h3>
<p>The important part here is, setting the working directory because we're using relative paths.</p>

<h3>What Is Microsoft TFS Used For?</h3>
<p>Microsoft TFS for source control has been around for more than a decade. And it has evolved a lot since its inception in 2005. There are professionals in the industry whose entire careers have been dedicated to managing TFS. Such expertise has been necessary because it was quite complicated to administer.</p>
<p>Hands-on management was critical to deal with database changes, service packs, and countless upgrades that added numerous small features. TFS was complicated to use, because it was created when user experience (UX) was not a top priority for Microsoft. When comes to TFS testing, there was no to what was happening. Testing in TFS steps was difficult because there was relationship between bugs and failed tests.</p>
<h2>Microsoft TFS Project Management</h2>
<p>In 2012, TFS morphed into a tool that helped teams manage their software development projects using Agile. One of the primary reasons it became popular for Agile was because companies already had Microsoft licenses. It was a simple choice. This made it easier for teams to adopt and support new Agile software development process.</p>
<p>Microsoft also created a dedicated TFS ALM tool. This light-weight tool could manage some requirements, but it lacked a robust and flexible model that can support large-scale global teams.</p>
<p>On the version control side of things, TFS has had a couple of different approaches. Team Foundation Version Control (TFVC) was one centralized version control system. This system saved historical data using path-based branches created and maintained on a Windows server.</p>
<h2>Microsoft TFS in the Cloud</h2>
<p>Many people continue to run older on-premises versions of TFS. But Microsoft has been moving all the software it makes to the cloud. Some obvious examples include Office 365 and Azure, along with numerous smaller initiatives. For many, Microsoft?s cloud move was unexpected, but the benefits are clear. Azure has become a fast, secure, and integrated platform for Windows shops.</p>
<p>It seems like no one ever expected Microsoft to openly embrace open source. But when you look at it closely, it makes sense. A big part of Microsoft?s strategy has been to win the hearts and minds of developers. Open Source has become popular with both developers and the companies they work for. As a result, Microsoft has put Git front and center in Visual Studio?s Source Code Control (SCC) integration.</p>
<h3>TFS Evolution: What Is the Difference between VSTS and TFS?</h3>
<p>So, TFS has morphed again. Today, VSTS (Visual Studio Team Services) is Microsoft?s Git code hosting, collaboration, and DevOps platform. It offers features comparable to other cloud-based Git tools and is the default version control system in Visual Studio. The on-premises version of VSTS is now called TFS. It looks nothing like the TFS of old. Microsoft?s GVFS (Git Virtual File System) runs on Windows servers and turns Git into a centralized, server-based system.</p>
<p>You can continue to use your legacy TFVC with Visual Studio and other popular VCS systems. Perforce Helix Core continues to have very strong integrations with the popular integrated development environment (IDE). Helix Core?s plugin for Visual Studio (P4VS) has been downloaded almost 400,000 times.</p>
<h2>TFS for Source Control: Evaluating the Git Takeover</h2>
<p>But even after all of this, yet another morph for TFS for source control may be on the horizon with Microsoft?s recent acquisition of GitHub, the actual home of open source software. Public announcements from the leadership of both companies say they will continue to operate ?business as usual?, serving their respective communities.</p>
<p>This being said, we all know things can change quickly in the technology marketplace. It seems very likely that, at some point in the future, GitHub and VSTS will merge. It isn?t much of a stretch to think that NuGet and other tools might make their way over to this combination. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft version control will evolve.</p>
<h2>What?s the Best Replacement for Team Foundation Server?</h2>
<p>If you are still using an older on-premises version of Microsoft TFS, consider joining many other companies who are taking advantage of this turning point to evaluate. Is Git and the new VSTS really the right set of technologies for your team?</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Large numbers of developers.</li>
<li>Geographic locations.</li>
<li>Very large files (and a lot of them).</li>
<li>Automation needs.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Then Git may not be the right solution for you.</p>

<p>Before migrating the TFS data into Azure DevOps, it?s a good idea to eliminate any data that you don?t need to move into the new service. Ten years of TFS has accumulated a huge amount of code, and I really only need to bring my latest repos forward.</p>
<p>This part will show which data to eliminate and the quickest way to do it.</p>
<p>If you missed the earlier posts, start here.</p>
<h2>Team Projects</h2>
<p>In my case, I had about 50 Team Project Collections. Team Project Collections each contain their own project template, code repository, and work items.</p>
<p>I had about 50 of these because we imported from SourceSafe over 10 years ago and the import process set it up this way. We actually only use one of these projects on an ongoing basis. Over the last 10 years, we migrated the code for active projects into this main project so we could share work items and project templates.</p>
<p>Because of this, I have about 50 extra projects that are old projects that are rarely (if ever) worked on. None of them have their own work items. I don?t want to bring any of these projects into the Azure DevOps service.</p>
<p>The future plan is that if we need to access the code for one of these projects, we?ll import it as a new GIT repository into our Azure DevOps Service project.</p>
<h3>Delete Team Projects</h3>
<p>So, for Step 1, delete the unnecessary Team Projects. This is most easily done through the Web UI for TFS.</p>
<p><strong>Make sure you are on the Staging TFS Web UI!</strong></p>
<p>In the Web UI, you need to access the Collection?s Settings. In the breadcrumb trail, at the top of the UI, click the root (mine is DefaultCollection). Then click Admin Settings at the bottom left corner. This will show you the full list of projects in your collection. Click the ellipsis next to each project (except for the ones you want to keep) and click Delete.</p>
<p>If any of these projects have a large code-base, this will take a long time. One of my big ones took over an hour, so be prepared to wait.</p>
<h2>Team Foundation Version Control</h2>
<p>Before GIT, we had TFVC. TFVC was the only source control that TFS supported in the beginning, so if you?ve been using it for long, you probably have lingering TFVC repositories.</p>
<p>We now exclusively use GIT, so I don?t want to migrate any of the TFVC repositories to Azure DevOps Service. If you are using TFVC, you can migrate these repositories? but I recommend you move to GIT anyway because it?s awesome.</p>
<p>My current project that I?m migrating contains both GIT and TFVC, so I want to purge the TFVC before migration. You can?t actually destroy the TFVC repository, it is there forever? but you can clear everything inside of it.</p>
<h3>Delete Workspaces</h3>
<p>First, delete all the workspaces. TFS won?t let you delete the code until the attached workspaces are gone.</p>
<p>The best way I found to do this was using a blast from the past: TFS Sidekicks!</p>
<p>TFS Sidekicks is a handy tool for TFVC but has fallen away as GIT has taken over. However, it still works in Azure DevOps Server 2019.</p>
<p>Install it onto your staging server and run it. Go to the Workspaces tab, and highlight and delete all the workspaces. Easy!</p>
<h3>Delete Code</h3>
<p>Now for the code. The best way to delete the code from the database for good is with a command line ?tf destroy?. This will eliminate the code completely from the database.</p>
<p>It is also very important that you include the /startcleanup parameter as that will tell the database to remove it immediately. Otherwise, it can take up to five days to be removed.</p>
<p>There is one caveat, that the tf destroy command will fail if it takes too long to run. So, if you have an enormous amount of code, you will need to do it in smaller chunks.</p>
<p>I had a ton of branches persisted in TFVC, so I had to do it one branch at a time. It took a while, so maybe put on a TV show while you do this?</p>
<p>The tf destroy command needs to be run from the Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio. Type that into Start to find it.</p>
<p>Then run *tf destroy $/[REPOSITORY]/[FOLDER] /startcleanup</p>
<p>If your repository is small enough, skip [FOLDER] and attempt to destroy it all in one run.</p>
<h2>Summary</h2>
<p>Your old data is cleaned out! This may seem unnecessary, but there are two reasons to do this.</p>
<p><ol>
<li>We really want to be under 30 GB before migration to have the simplest migration possible. More on this later?</li>
<li>This is a great opportunity to cut loose clutter that you no longer need. If you think you will need this code in the future, keep it. But in my case, I?m 99% sure I will never need it again. And if I do need it again, I want to migrate it to GIT anyway.</li>

The included services ?span the breadth of the development lifecycle to help developers ship software faster and with higher quality,? the company promises.</p>
<p>The rebranding is not exactly a surprise, given that VSTS is essentially a cloud service backed by Microsoft Azure. Each Azure DevOps service is open and extensible, designed to work with any type of application, regardless of the framework, platform, or cloud. Azure DevOps supports both public and private cloud configurations.</p>
<p>As for pricing, Azure DevOps is free for open source projects and small projects (up to five users). For larger teams, the cost ranges from $30 per month (10 users) to $6,150 per month (1,000 users).</p>

<p>VSTS users will also receive an updated user experience, which Microsoft will continue to iterate on based on feedback from the preview. New users will get the update today, and it will be enabled by default for existing users ?in the coming months.?</p>
<p>Users of TFS, the on-premises counterpart of VSTS, will continue to receive updates based on features live in Azure DevOps. Starting with the next version of TFS, the product will be called Azure DevOps Server and will receive the normal cadence of updates (new features have typically been added to VSTS first and then migrated to the on-premises TFS version as updates at approximately three-month intervals).</p>
