Azure DevOps: How to resolve Git merge conflict [updated]

This is a short guide to help resolve merge conflicts in Azure DevOps ? former VSO.

This is a guide to fix merge conflicts using Visual Studio and Azure DevOps Git as source control. Everything could also be done from the command line.

There?s great guide over on docs.microsoft.com on how to resolve Git merge conflicts, but I missed some steps so I created my own.

I?ve used a simple bugkiller repo you can get here on GitHub.

Before I start, I?ve created a feature-branch from master.

Step 1

In feature-branch I?ve changed a line in the Raygun.cs class by updating ammo to 8, and made a push on feature-branch.

In master branch I?ve made a change to the same line, but set ammo to 6. This change is pushed to master. This could simulate another team comitting their changes to master before your own

This action will result in master and feature-branch having changes to the same code lines and thus create a conflict when merging.

Step 2

I Azure DevOps I?ve now created a pull request from feature-branch -> master. This gives me a conflict straight away on the Raygun.cs file.

Step 3

To solve the conflict go back to Visual Studio and make sure you are still on the feature-branch.

Now click on feature-branch in the bottom right corner and choose ?Manage branches?.

Step 4

Now right-click on master and choose ?Merge From?? and make sure master branch is your source and feature-branch is the target. Click ?Merge?.

Step 5

Now Visual Studio will tell you there?s a merge conflict. Click Conflicts to see it.

Step 6

Solve any conflicts by clicking on Merge. Here I?ve chosen the master and ?Take Source?.

Now no conflicts remain so click on Commit Merge and enter a commit message.

Step 7

Back in Azure DevOps the page should be automatically updated ? if not just refresh the page. The conflict is now resolved and the merge complete. You can now let other developers approve and/or complete your pull request.

Kabrinskiy Eduard - It devops - Eduard Kabrinskiy

It devops

[youtube]

It devops Today's national news headlines It devops

What is DevOps?

In recent years DevOps has moved from an innovative idea to a mainstream approach. But despite how often it is talked about, advocated, and celebrated, the basic question: ?What is DevOps?? is common ? either out loud by the innocent or internally by those who feel they should know the answer but aren?t quite sure. Actually, it?s OK to be not quite sure, because there is no single agreed DevOps definition. At heart, DevOps is the need for a set of consistent practices that help organizations build, deliver, and maintain software and IT services better, quicker, and make them more reliable. As the name suggests, one of the key ways DevOps does this is by taking Development (taking ideas and requested changes and building them) and Operations (making them work and keeping them working) and putting them together, so they work as one. So, what is dev ops? Dev and ops together become DevOps, and silos with different goals become one team with a shared goal ? better services, quicker.

What Does DevOps stand for?

For many organizations, DevOps is about speed of deployment: getting the right thing out there quickly. Ultimately it isn?t about how they achieve that, but the DevOps philosophy has demonstrated mechanisms that have delivered that increase in speed and accuracy, and this collection of techniques, culture, and technology is what DevOps has come to stand for.

Although there isn?t a single definition to precisely answer the ?What is DevOps?? question, there are accepted elements that set out what DevOps means:

A reliance on technology, particularly automated testing to support rapid ? and often automated ? deployment and release. DevOps certainly isn?t just about technology, but it will not work without it.

Human factors ? bringing together wide-ranging teams and trusting those teams to make decisions about the products they are responsible for, and then for implementing those decisions. Trust and ownership are as essential as the technology. Breaking down organizational silos is a key requirement for success.

Measurement ? by measuring performance, focus on relevant improvements can be made more easily.

Use of appropriate tools, techniques, and best practice. DevOps does not seek to invent new practices but to make the best use of existing ones, such as Agile, ITIL, Lean, and more.

Collaboration and communication ? helping people work together and not duplicate efforts, through relevant (brief) meetings, sharing information via wikis and message boards, and more.

And ? most importantly ? customer focus. Doing the right things over doing things right.

DevOps is about both technology and culture: getting the best from both means thinking about them together. It needs the right technology, and staff who can use it well, and are empowered to use it.

History

According to the Wiki, the term DevOps is attributed to Patrick Debois, a Belgian IT professional. He coined the term around 2009. Debois and Andrew Schafer, following discussions at a Toronto conference, formed ideas and then a virtual group on ?Agile Systems Administration,? which can be seen as the birth of DevOps philosophies. The original term ?DevOps Days? was given to events to discuss this wider application of Agile, the ?days? term being dropped to give us the simpler ?DevOps? name we have today. The conferences discussing the concept grew ? in size, frequency, and geographical scope to deliver an ever-expanding worldwide community of support for the ideas behind DevOps.

A significant mechanism in the spread of DevOps history has been the novel ?The Phoenix Project? by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford. Widely seen as a good starting point for those wanting to understand the principles behind DevOps and the culture required to facilitate it. It was published in 2013 and remains an excellent entry for those wishing to get a feel for the culture behind DevOps. It suits anyone wishing a gentler introduction than a typical management book.

In recent years DevOps has seen considerable acceptance, so much that it is no longer seen as an innovation in many sectors, but the accepted approach, with take-up across many sectors and in all parts of the world.

SQL Clone

Redgate Software

Redgate SQL Clone

Easily integrate database provisioning tasks into Visual Studio Team Services or Team Foundation Server with Redgate SQL Clone.

Installing this extension provides three tasks:

Create image ? An image is a full sized copy of a database at a point in time and can be created from a live database or backup file.

Create clone ? Clones reference the data stored in the image so can be created in seconds using MBs of disk space.

Delete clone ? Remove any clones that are no longer in use.

Delete image ? Remove any image that are no longer in use.

Getting started with SQL Clone

SQL Clone allows full copies of a database to be provisioned in seconds, using only a few MB of disk space. You will need a SQL Clone Server installed to make use of this extension. Download your 14 day free trial here.

Creating a SQL Clone Service Endpoint

To perform any build or release tasks with the SQL Clone extension, a "SQL Clone Server" connected service must be configured in the administration section for your project. When in the Services section, you can select SQL Clone Server from the New Service Endpoint drop down.

Give the connection a name, and add the URL for your SQL Clone Server. If you have limited permissions to your SQL Clone Server to a specific user group, you can also add a username and password which will be used when connecting.

The SQL Clone Server URL must be accessible by any build agents running SQL Clone tasks.

Create image

All database clones are created from an initial image. Use this task to create an image from a live database or backup file.

The image location is where this image will be created and stored. Image locations must have already been added directly to the SQL Clone Server.

Build and Release variables can be specified in the image name to make them unique, for example $(build.buildid).

Create clone

A clone is a fully functional database which can be created in seconds and using only a few MBs of local disk space.

Specify the image the clone will be created from, as well as the target SQL Server instance and clone name. The SQL Server instance must have been added directly to the SQL Clone Server.

Delete clone

Remove clones created specifically for this build process.

Delete image

Remove image created specifically for this build process.

Tools and Pricing

Installing this extension is free, but requires a SQL Clone Server to be installed and accessible from any build agents running clone tasks. You can download a 14 day free trial of SQL Clone here.

SQL Clone is a database provisioning tool , which is licensed per user and can be purchased by contacting Redgate sales.

Today?s business managers depend heavily on reliable data integration systems that run complex ETL/ELT workflows (extract, transform/load and load/transform data). These workflows allow businesses to ingest data in various forms and shapes from different on-prem/cloud data sources; transform/shape the data and gain actionable insights into data to make important business decisions.

With the general availability of Azure Databricks comes support for doing ETL/ELT with Azure Data Factory.

This integration allows you to operationalize ETL/ELT workflows (including analytics workloads in Azure Databricks) using data factory pipelines that do the following:

Ingest data at scale using 70+ on-prem/cloud data sources

Prepare and transform (clean, sort, merge, join, etc.) the ingested data in Azure Databricks as a Notebook activity step in data factory pipelines

Monitor and manage your E2E workflow

Can I have multiple Azure DevOps organisations with MSDN Subscription?

I've tried to find an answer to this but nothing that gives anything definite.

I have a MSDN subscription (Visual Studio Enterprise). I have used the benefit from that to create a Azure DevOps environment that works well.

I am looking to create a new set of projects for a specific company, and it seems logical to create a new 'Organisation' to hold that code and work items.

Can you do this with the MSDN license? Or do I need to buy a subscription to bill that Azure DevOps instance to?

Can I have multiple Azure DevOps organisations with MSDN Subscription?

The short answer is NO.

Visual Studio Enterprise and Azure devops are two different products that have their own licenses, they could not share a licenses.

Besides, you can have multiple Azure DevOps organisations for free, but the free tier of resources in your organization is restricted, the Free tier includes:

Five Azure DevOps users (Basic).

Five Azure Artifacts users.

Free Tier of Microsoft-hosted CI/CD (one concurrent job, up to 30 hours per month).

One self-hosted CI/CD concurrent job.

20,000 virtual user minutes of cloud-based load testing.

When you need more than the free tier of resources in your organization, or to buy other features for your users that are offered by Microsoft or other companies via the Visual Studio Marketplace, on the Azure DevOps tab, you need buy a subscription to bill that Azure DevOps instance.

Vsts query - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Vsts query

[youtube]

Vsts query Latest breaking news Vsts query

Rory Primrose

Learn from my mistakes, you don't have time to make them yourself

Generating release notes in VSTS

Writing release documentation is one of those tasks that you need to do, but nobody wants to do it. We want the ability to automate the generation of documentation as much as possible to remove both manual labour and human error.

My team uses VSTS to manage the planning and delivery of software and we have defined it as the source of truth about our software from requirements to release. This means that (assuming good process is followed) VSTS contains all the information about the history of the product. This is the perfect source of information to produce release notes.

There are two parts for automatically generating release notes. Firstly, we need to identify what should be in release notes. Secondly, we need to be able to export that data in a way that is suitable as a release notes document.

We defined the following criteria for release notes contents in our project:

Includes Product Backlog Items and Bugs

Does not include Tasks work items

Does not include removed work items

Must identify the release version per PBI/Bug

Must allow for selectively excluding a PBI/Bug

Work Item Query

Because the source of information for the release notes are work items, the mechanism to automate this originates with a work item query. Already we can easily address the first three of the above criteria using available work item query filters.

The remaining criteria start to get a little tricky with the out of the box implementation of PBI and Bug work items.

Identifying the release version related to a PBI or Bug could be done using the Microsoft.VSTS.Build.IntegrationBuild field. There are issues with this however. Currently this field is not populated with VSTS Build vNext although the old XAML build system still should. Even if this was populated by a build, the build would write to this field and associate the work item (and their parent PBI and Bugs) for the current build. Each of our code changes will participate in many automated builds before they are bundled in an actual production release version. This means that this field will contain pre-release versions which we do not want included in release notes at the point of the work item query. Filtering out pre-release versions on this field would not be easy.

Our solution was to add two additional fields to our project process. We added a field to track the release version and a field for whether the work item should be included in release notes (a Yes/No pick list). You can read about modifying work items on MSDN

These fields were put onto the PBI and Bug work items. From here we can then add those fields into our release notes query to satisfy the remaining criteria.

The release notes query filters on ?Include In Release Notes <> No? to handle work items that have not had a Yes or No value selected for the field. We defined the default value on the field as Yes, but the underlying data storage of the work item stores this as empty until a value is specifically selected and saved. This means that you need to query on <> No instead of = Yes to include both default Yes and specifically selected Yes work items.

The last filter ensures that any PBI or Bug that does not have a release version is not included in release notes.

The final touches to the query are to return all the fields required for the documentation and to define the sort order.

The fields we want to report on are:

Id

Work Item Type

Title

Tags

Release Version

Acceptance Criteria

We then sort the results as:

Release Version (Descending)

Backlog Priority (Ascending)

Now we have a query that provides all the information we require to generate release notes. We have several repositories and products in our account so we duplicate this query and include a filter on Area Path so that each query can target a specific product.

Documentation Generation

Now we need to export the work item query data in a way that is suitable for release notes. There is an excellent VSTS/TFS extension on the marketplace called Enhanced Export. This allows you to take a work item query or test plan and apply the XML data against an XSLT template. The output of this is HTML which you can then download as a Word or Excel document. This suits our purpose nicely.

I took the ?Requirements Specification? template that came with the extension and started tweaking it to be more appropriate for our release notes. This is a very flexible system that you can modify to output release notes that suit your business purpose.

Notes

We made new work item queries similar to the above but with filters of State = Done and Release Version = ?? in order to identify work that was ready for the next release. We then added that query to our team dashboard as a chart.

Let us know how we?re doing!

Please take a moment to fill out the Microsoft Cloud Workshop Survey and help us improve our offerings.

Continuous delivery in Azure DevOps

Tailspin Toys saw the positive potential of the cloud and moved its IT infrastructure, with no significant re-architecture, into Microsoft Azure around six months ago. Now that its business is running successfully in the cloud, it has started a series of process improvements to become a more agile company with a specific focus on delivering frequent feature updates and fixes to its public website. Alex Montgomery, VP of sales and the head of its online business team, says that, "Even though our products are better, our competitors are generating more online sales than we are. For every feature that we deliver to our website, they have delivered 2 or 3. Our development processes are too cumbersome and slow for us to build quality code at that pace."

When it moved its existing systems into Microsoft Azure, Tailspin Toys decided to use the Azure App Service to host its public website which is written as an Angular front-end with an ASP.NET Core Web API. For the database (back-end) tier, they chose the Azure PostgreSQL Database service for full Platform-as-a-Service agility.

Tailspin wants to improve the turnaround time for fixing these bugs, and they need better logs for the developers. Tailspin needs a solution to gather new types of logs including browser errors and application dependency errors such as timeouts. Ideally, they want to make the application logs searchable as well as implement an automated warning system that emails alerts when application behavior is unusually slow or problematic.

Application Developer

In this workshop, you will learn how to setup and configure continuous delivery within Azure using a combination of Azure Resource Manager templates and Azure DevOps. You will do this throughout the use of a new Azure DevOps project, Git repository for source control, and an Azure Resource Manager template for Azure resource deployment and configuration management.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to build templates to automate cloud infrastructure and reduce error-prone manual processes. In addition, you'll create an Azure Resource Manager (ARM) template to provision Azure resources, configure continuous delivery with Azure DevOps, and create an Azure DevOps project and Git repository.

Whiteboard design session

In this whiteboard design session, you will learn how to design a solution with a combination of Azure Resource Manager templates and Azure DevOps to enable continuous delivery with several Azure PaaS services.

At the end of this workshop, you will be better able to build templates to automate cloud infrastructure and reduce error-prone manual processes. In addition, you'll learn how to design a deployment and monitoring architecture using Azure Resource Manager templates to provision Azure resources, Application Insights for deep application monitoring, and Azure DevOps as a source code repository and build/deploy pipeline.

In this hands-on lab, you will learn how to implement a solution with a combination of Azure Resource Manager templates and Azure DevOps to enable continuous delivery with several Azure PaaS services.

At the end of this workshop, you will be better able to implement solutions for continuous delivery with Azure DevOps in Azure, as well create an Azure Resource Manager (ARM) template to provision Azure resources, create an Azure DevOps project with a Git repository, and configure continuous delivery with Azure DevOps.
