It took me quite sometime to understand on how to use it. I started to request the system admin to grant me permission as project admin so I can explore more and perform necessary configuration. Once it's granted, I did some basic project admin stuffs below:

Configure teams and areas for all teams within the program, only add team members that involve in respective team, and housekeeping to remove unknown credential. This is to ensure right people to be able to view the right backlogs.

Define work-items structure. Epic and Capability exist in Program level, and Feature, User Story, and Task exist in Team level. And I will ensure the linkage between work-items is correct so everyone can see from top to bottom. This will align with SAFe guideline as well that Feature must fit within one Program Increment (PI) and User Story must fit within one iteration.

Manage team permission: not to allow delete work-items to avoid some people to accidentally delete any items. And update some permissions that inherited from the organizational-level configuration, that potentially cause any harm to the project.

Configure iteration with naming standard, define the iteration duration, and enable it on each team. I use iteration name as (year).(quarter).(sprint), e.g. 20.Q1.S1 means Sprint 1 in 2020 quarter 1 program increment.

Add non-working days (e.g. public holidays) & request team to put leave plan in calendar, and define each team members assignment & daily hour allocation on each iteration to know every team's capacity on every sprint. This will be really useful as input on Sprint Planning, to make sure that everyone knows their capacity before start any iteration. To make sure they won't over-commit or under-commit on that iteration.

Create Wiki pages on Scrum guidelines (e.g. how to write sprint goals, good way to write user story, scrum cadence, story point estimation, etc.) and some step by step guidelines on how to use Azure DevOps.

The Blog of The Hybrid DBA

I like to make stuff go

Installing a Visual Studio Team Services private build agent hosted On-Premises

This blog post is about a situation where I use Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) to build/deploy my DEMOs. Those DEMOs are what I use to illustrate Continuous Integration & Continuous Delivery (important parts of that thing called DevOPs).

I use my own personal VSTS account so that I am not showing anything commercially sensitive.

One thing with using a basic account is that you only get 240 build minutes per month. These builds are utilising the hosted build agents in Azure.

This works great ? up until I have 4 DEMOs that are different and require testing before I present them. In May 2017 I had 4 DEMOs to conduct:

Code Camp Christchurch on May 13th where I was speaking twice: (VSTS and Azure DEMO and SQL Server Data Tools DEMO) both of which would be using VSTS.

A webinar for the DBA Virtual Chapter on May 18th which was on ?DevOPs and the DBA?.

SQL Saturday Brisbane on May 27th ? mostly the same DEMO as the DBA VC.

Whilst the DEMOs themselves would only use 12 minutes of build time ? the preparation of them would push me over the limit. I also wanted to try quite a few new things related to SSDT, DACPACs and other things related to SQL Azure.

You can use your own hosted (known as ?private ?) build agent and connect to up to VSTS ? so long as it has access and the right tools installed on it?.

That is another reason to use your own hosted agent ? you may have specific software required for your build(s). In my case I would be doing a lot of builds relating only to SQL Server, Azure SQL Database and associated tools.

Oh yeah ? VSTS allows one free private hosted agent.

So I have created a dedicated build agent just for my SQL Server activities.

Here is a step by step guide to installing a private hosted build agent. For authentication I will be using a Personal Access Token (PAT) for the agent to authenticate to VSTS.

Log into VSTS and from your home page, open your profile. Go to your security details.

Configure the PAT ? for the scope select Agent Pools (read, manage) and make sure all the other boxes are cleared

Save the token somewhere as you will need it when installing/configuring the agent on the on-premises server.

Log on to the machine using the account for which you have permissions to install software and also access VSTS

In your web browser, sign on to VSTS, and navigate to the Agent pools tab: https://<your_account>.visualstudio.com/_admin/_AgentPool

Click Download agent.

On the Get agent dialog box, click Windows.

Click the Download button.

On the server ? extract the ZIP file in a directory and run config.cmd

Fill in details as required ? you will use the PAT token from step 2/3 above:

Go back into VSTS and you will now have a new hosted agent:

For the particular project ? go into Settings | Agent Queues and choose the existing pool that will have the newly installed private agent in it.

Next we want to associate our build steps with this queue ? so edit your build definition and choose the Agent Queue from above:

Now the REAL fun begins ? let?s queue a build.

And of course it works the first time?.

If we now look in generated artifact we will have our desired result ? a DACPAC file

That we can now use VSTS to deploy out to our Azure SQL Database (and also on-premises SQL Server).

Which is the basis for another blog post?..

HashiCorp Enhances Consul with Topology Maps and Improved Kubernetes Integrations

Nov 08, 2020 2 min read

Hashicorp has announced the beta release of Consul 1.9, adding new features to their service mesh platform. This release includes enhancements to the intentions model to support Layer 7 constructs, new visualizations for verifying configurations, and custom resources for Kubernetes.

With the introduction of application-aware intentions, policies can now be constructed to support Layer 7 interactions. This includes support to allow or disallow service communication based on HTTP request headers and URL paths. In previous versions, intentions only had support for L4 interactions. It is now possible to mix both L4 and L7 into a single intention declaration:

The above example defines intentions for a common destination of "api". The first intention denies connections from the source "hackathon-project" while allowing traffic connections from the source "web". From the source "nightly-reconciler", it is allowing HTTP traffic from only the specified path via the POST method.

Traditionally debugging and troubleshooting the setup and configuration of Consul required relying on error logs, command line output, and sending telemetry to external systems. Consul lacked an easy way to visualize the service mesh topology to streamline troubleshooting. With this release, a new topology tab has been added to the UI. This presents topology diagrams along with key service mesh metrics such as requests, error rates, and timings. More details and best practices are available in the maintenance and monitoring operations guides.

Within the topology map it is possible to view the interactions between services within the mesh. An explicit deny will appear as a red line with an x between the two services. It is possible to adjust denies to allow via the topology map.

The new topology tab in the Consul UI showing a denied connection (credit: Hashicorp)

To improve the Kubernetes-first experience, this release will introduce support for Custom Resource Definitions to streamline configuring Consul via Kubernetes-style objects. It will now be possible to manage configurations for services via CRDs. At the time of release, the following configuration entries were available as CRDs:

proxy-defaults - controls proxy configuration

service-defaults - configures defaults for all the instances of a given service

service-resolver - matches service instances with a specific Connect upstream discovery requests

service-router - defines where to send layer 7 traffic based on the HTTP route

service-splitter - defines how to divide requests for a single HTTP route based on percentages

service-intentions - defines restrictions for specific service to service interactions

As an additional improvement to the Kubernetes integration, Consul can now detect health status from Kubernetes via its readiness probe. This will allow for deciding on where traffic should be directed based on both Consul's health checks and now the native Kubernetes health checks on pods.

The introduction of streaming improves both CPU and network bandwidth usage on large-scale deployments of Consul. This change is facilitated by a major architectural improvement in how update notifications for blocking queries are delivered. Streaming is available on the service health HTTP endpoint and can be enabled via configuration flags and the cached URL parameter. Future releases will see streaming added to more endpoints.

Consul 1.9 is available now in beta release. Hashicorp advises that forward compatibility is not guaranteed and as such, it is recommended to install this in a cluster that can be lost. For more details on the release, the changelog is available.

Working with TFS and PowerShell (Examples)

Adam Bertram

Read more posts by this author.

Microsoft?s Team Foundation Server (TFS) is a version control, work tracking, build deployment and release management application. It?s a product that help software developers and DevOps teams control the entire code creation and deployment process. Although TFS does have a variety of graphical methods to use it, there are times when teams need to automate various aspects of TFS. Luckily, it includes a REST API so we can manage TFS with PowerShell.

TFS provides a rich API which can be used in conjunction with PowerShell to build a handy way to control TFS with the command line and via PowerShell script.

In this article, we?re going to cover the basics of what it takes to make that initial connection to TFS with PowerShell. The code you?ll be using can then be used to explore more API operations with PowerShell to build more advanced functionality.

Getting Started

To access the TFS REST API first requires authentication. To do this in PowerShell, you can use a PSCredential object. To create a PSCredential object, run Get Credential and provide an account that has access to TFS

Once you have a credential saved as a variable, you?ll then use this throughout numerous calls to the PowerShell cmdlet Invoke-RestMethod . Invoke-RestMethod is a PowerShell cmdlet that allows us to craft and send various HTTP requests to REST APIs quickly. Since I?ll need to use the Credential parameter for each Invoke-RestMethod call, I?ll create a splatted parameter set with Credential inside so I don?t have to specify it every time.

Now send a test query to TFS just to ensure you don?t receive an error. Try to retrieve all of the projects available to you on the server. You can do this by sending the HTTP GET method to the API. But first, you need to know the URI. To retrieve all of the projects, the URL scheme will look like this:

You can see that I?m using v2.0 of the API. My particular URI looks like this:

Now that you know the URI, you can then add this to the parameters to Invoke-RestMethod .

Next, I?ll need to add the other parameters to Invoke-RestMethod .

When I run the above code, you?ll get an output that looks like this. This TFS PowerShell example using Invoke-RestMethod to initiate an API request.

This isn?t too helpful. To get at what you?re looking for, you need to look at the contents of the value property. You?ll immediately see once you look at the value property, each of the projects inside of the collection will show up.

This means that you?ve authenticated to TFS and have queried the correct URI.

At this point, the world is your oyster. Perhaps you?d like to see all of the builds available to you. Because I?ve stored all of the parameters inside of the hashtable, I just have to change the Uri parameter.

You can see that after you get authenticated and figure out the correct URL scheme, it?s just a matter of changing up the URL to do what you want. To learn a lot more about what you can do with the TFS REST API, I encourage you to check out the Visual Studio getting started documentation.

Summary

Using PowerShell, you can begin managing and automating many things with TFS. Managing TFS with PowerShell allows you to integrate various TFS processes into concepts like a CI/CD pipeline among other things.

MS VSTS how do I add/modify fields in a Work Item

I have a question regarding MS Visualstudio.com How do I add/modify field in a WorkItem?

I have tried to do it but when I go into the Process area which is where I believe I should be able to customise it all the options are greyed out.

Is it possible and what permissions do I need?

2 Answers 2

If it's all grayed-out, it's probably (except if it's a rights management issue) because you're trying to modify one of the standard process, which you can't do. You have to create a new process that inherits from the process you're using

Go to the root of VSTS by clicking on the black VSTS logo on the top-left corner

Click on the parameters wheel

Click on Process

If you already have a custom process, click on it, otherwise, click on the ". " menu of the process you're currently using and select "Create inherited process

Select the work item type that you want to modify and do the modifications there

Go back to your project settings and change the process used to the new inherited process you created

There are two types of processes in VSTS:

System processes ?Scrum, Agile, and CMMI? which are locked from being changed.

Inherited processes, which you can customize and that inherit definitions from the system process from which they were created. System processes are owned and updated periodically by Microsoft. Any updates made to a system process will automatically update your inherited process.

If you want to customize a system process, it's not allowed, you have to create an inherited process. Also, you must be a member of the Project Collection Administrators group, the organization owner, or be granted explicit permissions to edit, create, or manage a specific process and to create a project.

Vsts pull request - Кабринский Эдуард

Vsts pull request

Vsts pull request Latest news live Vsts pull request

VSTS Pull Request Alerts in Microsoft Teams

When you start something new, first on your agenda should be a website! Right?

One of the first things Donovan set up for the new "League of Extraordinary Cloud DevOps Advocates" team was a new LoeCDA.com website. The "Tour Dates" section will be extremely useful if you'd like to see any of us at an event near you!

He used the extremely useful yo team yeoman generator and had a new ASP.NET Core website, complete with a CI/CD pipeline, running on docker in Azure in just a few minutes. This still blows my mind, but I digress - that's not the point of this post.

Our dev process

Even though this is a very simple website, we agreed to make all changes via pull requests (PRs). This helps us in two ways:

We can exercise the PR process in Team Services and Visual Studio

It helps us learn from each other

Exercising features that real dev teams will be using is really important. Half of the Cloud Dev Advocate role is bringing feedback back to the engineering teams. What better way to do that than using the features?

Learning from each other is an often-overlooked benefit of working with pull requests. It forces code reviews, which is a great way to learn about new techniques or better ways to implement features.

So every change will occur on a feature branch (or topic branch), we'll submit a PR, another team member reviews and approves it, and merges in those changes. Of course once that happens, CI/CD ensures it gets to production with almost no more effort!

Finding out about PRs

We use Microsoft Teams for day-to-day communication, so what better way to learn about new pull requests than through a chat client that's always open?

Teams has a great feature called Connectors, which allows you to integrate with third-party applications. Thankfully, there's a connector for VSTS.

Configuring the VSTS connector

The first (optional) step is to set up a new channel in Teams. You can easily add a connector to an existing channel, but having a specific channel for PRs reduces the noise in your other channels.

To do this, just click on the ellipsis next to your team, and choose Add Channel.

Now click on the ellipsis next to the new channel, and choose Connectors.

Find the Visual Studio Team Services connector. If you already have some VSTS integration, you'll see a Configure button. If not, it will be Add.

If you're adding a VSTS connector for the first time, you'll need to walk through the steps to connect to VSTS. Once you've done so, you'll be able to choose your connection (or "Profile") for subsequent VSTS connector configurations.

The next part is easy - just go through the fields and choose the appropriate entries from the dropdowns. You'll need to choose a VSTS Account and Project, and you can choose to be alerted by events for individual VSTS teams, or for all teams.

You'll then be asked for an event type. There are a lot of VSTS events you can choose from here.

In our case, we want to hear about both "Pull request created" events, and "Pull request merge commit created" events - i.e. when there's a new PR, and when one has been merged. Unfortunately you can't choose both at the same time, so we had to go through this configuration twice. Not a big deal - it's a once-off configuration and only takes a couple of minutes.

Once done, going back to Connectors (from the channel ellipsis) allows us to see the connectors we've configured.

The end result

When a new PR is submitted by anyone in the team, there's a new message in the channel - complete with a direct link to view the PR!

Azure pipelines docker - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure pipelines docker

[youtube]

Azure pipelines docker Latest headlines Azure pipelines docker

CI/CD Docker Compose using Azure DevOps

I've been fighting a bit with some of the Azure DevOps pipeline tasks trying to configure end-to-end solution for one of my side project. It is based on a good old Docker Compose and I am pretty happy with how it works in production. What I wanted to do is schematically described down below.

What is Azure DevOps

Azure DevOps helps to plan smarter, collaborate better, and ship faster with a set of modern dev services. It's a end-to-end solution for any software development cycle. Anyone can use it even for free with some limitations/conditions of usage (public projects, limited pipeline minutes per month etc). And it's free unlimited git!

Multistage pipeline

If you are not familiar with multistage pipeline concept, have a look. In short, it brings all CI/CD experience into yaml , where you define all your stages (no UI.. ). It's been really big missing thing for a while since only build pipeline could be explain like this..

Let's break down the above into small parts and explain what was going on there. In the first stage Build_docker_containers there are two tasks: build image (it's actually three actions in one: build, tag and push) and publish pipeline artifact. Use this task in a pipeline to publish artifacts for the Azure Pipeline (note that publishing is NOT supported in release pipelines. It is supported in multi stage pipelines, build pipelines, and yaml pipelines). AZURE-CONTAINER-REGISTRY-NAME and AZURE-CONTAINER-REGISTRY-REPOSITORY-NAME both have to be changed accordingly. Note that a built image gets tag which is by default built-in Build.BuildId predefined variable which helps me properly roll out my app update on the second stage.

For the sake of simplicity this pipeline (stages) has been simplified.

The second stage is Deploy_to_production and it rolls out built image to my production server. All it's tasks are based on SSH deployment tasks. The SSH endpoint has to be configured first in service endpoints (there used to be some issues in new service endpoint experience with >2048 public keys in 2019, but Microsoft team has fixed this).

sed -i 's/##BUILD##/$(Build.BuildId)/g' docker-compose.yaml replaces build number, so docker-compose up -d 2> docker-compose.log brings something to update in docker-machine.

Docker and Docker Compose

I use docker for packaging an app and docker registry (Azure Container Registry). There is no problem to use dockerhub, just a corresponding endpoint has to be present in service endpoints. Compose helps me to combine multiple containers and define the logic between them and some other objects, as well as their behavior.

Docker compose for Azure DevOps

The following docker-compose.yaml is in my project.

Let's break down the above into small parts and explain what was going on there. There are two services (of course there are more, but for the sake of simplicity of this exercise there are only two). AZURE-CONTAINER-REGISTRY-NAME.azurecr.io/AZURE-CONTAINER-REGISTRY-REPOSITORY-NAME:##BUILD## has to be changes slightly except ##BUILD## which is being changed every pipeline execution.

Summary

Any feature or bug fix can be delivered to production in less than 6 minutes.

With 1800 free minutes of pipeline per month and 6 minutes of all my stages total duration I can do 300 cycles building and releasing my software.

DevOps Engineer Digitale Leeromgeving - Applicatiebeheer Leerplanner

Hogeschool Utrecht В· Standplaats: Utrecht В· 4 november 2020
