<p>At Stackify, we’re big fans of tools that make developers’ lives simpler, and one such tool is Visual Studio Online, which is now known as Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS), an extension of the Visual Studio architecture that covers development teams. It has special tools and roles for software developers, testers, and specialists. These include tools for collaboration, reporting, development, and measurement.</p>
<p>Let’s go over a few basics about VSTS and the ways each member of your team can leverage this tool for better productivity and collaboration. Then, if you’re wondering what to build next, check out our <em>What will you build?</em> guide for some inspiration.</p>

<h2>What is Visual Studio?</h2>
<p>Visual Studio is a development environment that helps software developers manage their projects and work using different programming languages, including Visual C++ .NET, ASP.NET, Visual J#, Visual C# .NET, and Visual Basic .NET.</p>
<h3>A Misnomer: Why the Name Change from Visual Studio Online to VSTS?</h3>
<p><strong>Visual Studio Online is not Visual Studio on the Web.</strong> Many people might think that it’s simply the cloud-based version of Microsoft’s development tool, but in reality, it is Team Foundation Server (TFS) in the cloud. Ed Blankenship of Microsoft explains that even that scenario may not be entirely accurate. Blankenship notes that it started off as the online version of TFS, but with a lot of features and services added in over time. It is also managed entirely by Microsoft. You don’t have to do anything other than create an account, and you’re good to go. Microsoft manages and administers the servers, as well as takes care of your backups.</p>

<h3>Visual Studio Team Services Features</h3>
<p>VSTS includes more benefits than what you could get from the Team Foundation Server, such as an integrated Build Service, which gives you an easy way to access build agents that have been pre-configured and have a number of tools already installed. These tools are from Microsoft, as well as third-party sources.</p>
<p>These agents are added to your account when needed and then removed after you use it. This helps make it more secure and very scalable.</p>
<p>You also have the Load Testing Service that allows you to access Azure infrastructure to run a high number of load tests with the barest minimum setup required, or sometimes no setup at all. You can simulate load testing of up to 2.5 million users worldwide.</p>
<p>Load testing is a must for determining if your applications can stand up to real-world use conditions. There are many load testing tools available today for all kinds of applications and organizations.</p>
<p>Another service in Visual Studio is Application Insights, which helps you monitor performance and usage data for your applications. Using this feature, software developers can answer questions, such as:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Which of your application’s features are being used by what percentage of your users?</li>
<li>Which features should you focus on?</li>
<li>Which ones should you abandon?</li>
</ul>

<p>Then you have Release Management, which helps you manage builds and where they eventually end up. It can also track features and which applications and environment have them.</p>

<h3>Benefits of Visual Studio Team Services</h3>
<p>Using the many features of VSTS allows you to get started quickly, and even make it easier to build, plan, and ship your applications even when you make it available on a variety of platforms. You get all of its features without having to download and set up anything – all the features are just there for you to use. You don’t have to worry about supporting the tool; you can now just focus on developing your applications.</p>
<p>Collaboration is easier, even with teams distributed around the world. You have the option to use centralized version control, or if you have a distributed approach, you can work with Git. What’s more, you have everything in one place and this makes it easier for your team to keep track of new features and work out bugs.</p>
<p>Moreover, VSTS is frequently updated with new tools, functionality, and features. And because employees at Microsoft use it, you can expect a lot more useful features down the road. And speaking of added functionality, you can add extensions such as Trello, Slack, Github, Tower Git, Octopus, or HockeyApp – you can even create your own.</p>
<p>In short, it fosters agility and efficiency in teams. Smaller teams with five or fewer members can even take advantage of VSTS for free. For teams with more than five members, Microsoft offers scalable pricing, and you’ll pay only for the users on your team who need access.</p>
<h3>How to Use VSTS</h3>
<p>How can your team use VSTS? Here are some ways:</p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>Analysts.</strong> Analysts can utilize the tools and services that VSTS offers, allowing them to input work items, as well as documentation. They can create documentation with the level of sophistication and detail they want. They can even make use of customized templates to help make things easier, simpler and more consistent. All documentations are in HTML format, with images and other files attached to it.</li>
<li><strong>Programmers.</strong> Programmers can use this service for: integrated unit testing, source control, and automated builds. Even though you cannot use it as a development environment, it interfaces seamlessly with Visual Studio. You can also use it with similar development tools such as Xcode and Eclipse.</li>
<li><strong>Testers.</strong> Testers can manage acceptance test and enter test scripts using VSTS. IT also has advanced reporting that helps them monitor and keep track of the tests done over time.</li>
<li><strong>IT project / team managers.</strong> Managers can use the service to monitor the team’s progress. It allows you to divide bigger projects into smaller iterations, as well as scheduling work items and assigning tasks to team members. It can automatically generate product backlogs, burndown charts and Kanban boards, among other reports.</li>

<p>We will see how we can implement Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD) for Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (CE) using Azure DevOps. In this blog, we will see how we can deploy a CRM Solution from one CRM instance to another CRM instance, let us say, we have to deploy a CRM solution from the development environment to the QA / UAT environment.</p>
<p>The following components are the pre-requisites, or we are using to implement CI/CD for Dynamics 365 CE using Azure DevOps.</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Azure DevOps</li>
<li>Power DevOps Tools by Wael Hamze</li>
<li>Two or more CRM Instances (in my case I am using two CRM instances, one is “Source”, and another is “Destination”)</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Let us start implementing CI/CD for Dynamics 365 CE using Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>First, we must install the Power DevOps Tools in the Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>Next, we will create the Build Pipeline and post that we will create Release Pipeline.</p>
<p>Please note, I have already created a CRM solution in my CRM Source instance (refer Fig. 1).</p>

<p><strong>Build Pipeline</strong></p>
<p>In the Build Pipeline, we will export the CRM solution from the “Source” CRM instance and store the solution in the Artifacts in Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>We must follow the below steps to create the Build Pipeline.</p>
<p>1. Browse your Azure DevOps environment.</p>
<p>2. Select the Project.</p>
<p>3. Navigate to the Pipeline and click on the “Create Pipeline” (refer Fig. 2).</p>

<p>4. Click on the “Classic Editor” (refer Fig. 3).</p>

<p>5. Select the “Source”, “Team Project”, “Repository”, “Branch” and then click on Continue (refer Fig. 4).</p>

<p>6. Click on “Empty Job” (refer Fig. 5).</p>

<p>7. You will be redirected the empty agent job screen (refer Fig. 6).</p>

<p>8. Rename the Agent Job and click on + and add the new task “Power DevOps Tool Installer” (refer Fig. 7).</p>

<p>9. Add new task “Export Solution” and configure the connection string, solution name (refer Fig. 8).</p>

<p>10. Add another task “Export Solution” (refer Fig. 9).</p>

<p>11. Once the Build Pipeline is completed, click on “Save and Queue” to test the Build Pipeline (refer Fig. 10).</p>

<p>12. Click on “Save and Run” (refer Fig. 11).</p>

<p>13. Once the Build Pipeline is executed successfully, the CRM Solution is exported and stored in the Artifacts folder (refer Fig. 12).</p>

<p><strong>Release Pipeline</strong></p>
<p>In the Release Pipeline, we will import the solution which was exported using Build Pipeline and stored in the Artifacts folder.</p>
<p>We must follow the below steps to create the Release Pipeline.</p>
<p>1. Browse the Azure DevOps environment.</p>
<p>2. Select the Project.</p>
<p>3. Navigate to Releases and click on New Pipeline (refer Fig. 13).</p>

<p>4. Select the “Empty Job” (refer Fig. 14).</p>

<p>5. Rename the Stage name (in my case “Dynamics CRM Destination Instance”) (refer Fig. 15).</p>

<p>6. Click on “Add an Artifacts”, select the Build Pipeline and click on Add (refer Fig. 16).</p>

<p>7. Configure the “Continuous Deployment Trigger” (refer Fig. 17).</p>

<p>8. Add a new task “Import Solution” and configure the connection string to the Dynamics CRM Release Pipeline and click on Save (refer Fig. 18).</p>

<p>9. Click on “Create Release” button and configure as mentioned in the screen (refer Fig. 19).</p>

<p>10. Select the newly created release pipeline and click on Deploy (refer Fig. 20).</p>

<p>11. If all the configurations are correct, the Release Pipeline is executed successfully (refer Fig. 21)</p>

<p>12. Once the Release Pipeline is executed successfully, the CRM solution is imported successfully into the CRM destination environment (refer Fig. 22).</p>

<h1>Using Visual Studio Code with Azure DevOps</h1>
<p>In this article I want to give a quick overview about the integration of Visual Studio Code and Git with Azure DevOps on my Windows 10 machine.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps ? formerly VSTS ? is the version of Team Foundation Server hosted on Microsoft Azure. Azure DevOps includes Azure Pipelines, Azure Boards, Azure Artifacts, Azure Repos and Azure Test Plans.</p>
<p>To gain first experiences with Azure RM Scripting, automated deployment and code repositories I looked at Visual Studio Code (VSCode). This is a free source code editor from Microsoft. With Azure Repos you get free private Git repositories and will be able to do code collaboration in the cloud.</p>
<h3>Setup Visual Studio Code & Git</h3>
<p>First download the latest version of Visual Studio Code from https://code.visualstudio.com/ and install it. Start the application and install the extension: Azure Repos</p>
<p>The next step is to download the latest version of Git from https://git-scm.com/download . Choose all the defaults except change VS Code to the default editor. That?s optional but I did it.</p>
<p>If you haven?t created an Azure DevOps project yet, you should do so now. You have as well a new created repository. Navigate in your browser to Azure Repos.</p>
<p>I have created a folder to synchronize the repository to the local harddisk.</p>
<p>In the File-Explorer there is now the option ?Git Bash Here? with right click available. The following window appears in which you initialize Git with the command ?git init?.</p>
<p>This command creates a subdirectory .git, which contains all relevant Git Repository data, i.e. a Git Repository framework.</p>
<h3>Clone Git Repository from Azure DevOps</h3>
<p>The next step is to clone the git repository from Azure DevOps to the local disk.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Update: this Bug has been resolved!</em><br />Note</strong>: In Azure DevOps there is a button that you can press to synchronize. It doesn?t work if the URL contains spaces because of a bug. For this reason, I executed the clone command via the Git Bash. Therefore, replace the ?blanks? with %20 and it will work.</p></blockquote>

<p>The next command is only needed if the repository is completely empty. It will create a completely new history of the project. If you do not execute this command, Git will not work in VSCode.</p>

<p>If you are now starting Visual Studio Code you need to click ?Add Workspace folder?? on the welcome screen and choose the Git Folder on your harddrive. This will look like this. As you can see, I have already created a folder and a new PowerShell file.</p>
<h3>Signin to Azure DevOps-Team</h3>
<p>To collaborate with your team in Azure DevOps you need to sign-in first. For doing this click on ?View? in the navigation pane and choose ?Command Palette? or press ?CTRL+SHIFT+P?. In the command window enter ?Team: Signin? and choose your authentication method. I prefer the ?new experience?.</p>

<p>This repo contains the tasks that enable the caching of intermediate artifacts from an Azure Pipelines build using Universal Artifacts.</p>
<h2>How to use</h2>
<p>This build task is meant to add an easy way to provide caching of intermediate build artifacts. To demonstrate, let's examine the following build definition snippet:</p>
<p>Conceptually, this snippet creates a lookup key from the keyfile argument and checks the vstsFeed for a matching entry. If one exists, it will be downloaded and unpacked. After more node_modules are restored via yarn the SaveCache task runs to create a cache entry if it wasn't available previously (if a cache entry was downloaded, this is a no-op).</p>
<p><ul>
<li>keyfile : The file or pattern of files to use for creating the lookup key of the cache. Due to the nature of node_modules potentially having their own yarn.lock file, this snippet explicitly excludes that pattern to ensure there is a consistent lookup key before and after package restoration.</li>
<li>targetfolder : The file/folder or pattern of files/folders that you want to cache. The matching files/folders will be represented as the universal package that is uploaded to your Azure DevOps artifact feed.</li>
<li>vstsFeed : The guid representing the artifact feed in Azure DevOps meant to store the build's caches.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>If you do not want to add two build steps to your build definition, you can also use a single task that implicitly adds the SaveCache task at the end of the build. For example:</p>
<h2>Optimistic cache restoration</h2>
<p>If a cache was restored successfully, the build variable CacheRestored is set to true . This can provide a further performance boost by optionally skipping package install commands entirely.</p>
<p>In the following example, the 'yarn' task will only run if there was not a cache hit. Although this can provide faster builds, it may not be suitable for production builds.</p>
<h3>Cache aliases</h3>
<p>By default, the name of the variable used for optimistic cache restoration defaults to CacheRestored . However, this can be problematic in restoring multiple caches in the same build (E.g. caches for build output and for packages). To work around this, you may set an optional task variable to control the naming of the CacheRestored variable.</p>
<h2>Platform independent caches</h2>
<p>By default, cached archives are platform <em>dependent</em> to support the small differences that may occur in packages produced for a specific platform. If you are certain that the cached archive will be platform <em>independent</em>, you can set the task variable platformIndependent to true and all platforms will restore the same archive.</p>
<h2>Onboarding</h2>

<li>Create a new Azure Artifacts feed to store caches in. After creating the feed, the GUID will be referenced in your build definition. In the examples above, ArtifactFeed is a build variable equal to the GUID of the Azure Artifact feed.</li>

<p><em>Note:</em> The GUID for your Azure Artifact feed can be found either by using the Azure DevOps rest apis or by creating a build task in the traditional visual designer that references the feed and then selecting "View YAML".</p>
<h2>Known limitations</h2>
<p>The task is designed to only cache artifacts that are produced within the build's root directory. This works best for packages that follow this convention (e.g. NPM and NuGet), but not for artifacts that are produced outside of the repo's directory (e.g. Maven).</p>
<p>The task skips restoring and saving caches on forked repositories by design. This is a security measure to protect cached artifacts from forked sources and a limitation from the Azure Artifacts permissions model (users of forked repositories don't have access to download these artifacts).</p>

<p>Over the last weeks I run in to constant login problems with my Git repositories hosted in Azure DevOps. One day everything works, the next day I cannot connect. I seems as if Microsoft is pushing more actively the move to personal access tokens and the older approach with alternate credentials comes to an end. Those tokens offer more flexibility and you can create them in just a few simple steps.</p>
<h2>Create your personal access token</h2>
<p>The tokens you create are connected to an organisation. Therefore, if you are a member of multiple organisations you need to create a token for each one of them. Open Azure DevOps with the first organisation and click on your profile picture in the top right corner:</p>

<p>The menu security brings you to directly to the overview of your personal access tokens:</p>

<p>All you need to do is to click on the new token button and fill out the form:</p>

<p>The form offers you a lot more options than the alternate credentials did. You can give fine grained permissions to all the different parts your account has access to. I restrict the tokens I use with Git clients to the source code part and give no other permissions.</p>
<p>As soon as you click create you see your token. COPY IT immediately! As the screen explains it will not be stored and you will not get a second chance to copy it:</p>

<h2>Use your token</h2>
<p>The token you created above is your new password that you can use in all the places you gave it permission for. In my example above I can use this token with my Git clients (GitKraken and GitHub Desktop), but I can not login or access the portal.</p>
<h2>Manage your tokens</h2>
<p>If you go back to the security page (using the security entry in the menu on your profile picture) you now can manage your tokens.</p>

<p>The most important action is revoke. Should your token be lost, or someone got access to it, you can revoke the token and the access to your account is no longer possible.</p>
<p>Hopefully, you will only need to use the regenerate action to replace an old token with a new one ? most likely when the token reached its end of life.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>With a more fine-grained access control the personal access tokens are a good replacement for the alternate credentials. You need a little bit more work to create and maintaining them, but the additional security is worth it. You can try them right now or wait until you no longer can work with your current credentials.</p>

<h1>Using Azure DevOps Artifacts NuGet Feeds from Azure DevOps Pipeline Builds</h1>
<p>Azure DevOps has the ability to publish things to a private NuGet feed as part of its artifacts handling.</p>
<p>Working with a private feed from a developer machine running builds from the command line or Visual Studio is pretty easy. There is documentation on using a NuGet credential provider to authenticate with Azure DevOps and make that seamless.</p>
<p>However, getting this to work from a pipeline build is challenging. Once you?ve published a package, you may want to consume it from something else you?re building? but the feed is secured. What do you do?</p>
<blockquote><p>I?m told there are improvements for this coming in Q2 2019. I can?t quantify what those improvements are, but it may mean things start to ?just work.? Until then, here are ways to work around the challenges.</p></blockquote>
<h1>Option 1: Separate Restore from Build</h1>
<p>The documentation shows how to use NuGet or the dotnet CLI for package restore from your feed. Both of the solutions effectively amount to separating the call to NuGet restore or dotnet restore from the rest of your build.</p>
<p>For NuGet, you?d use a NuGet build step ( NuGetCommand@2 ) and specify the restore. Do that before you execute the build on your solution.</p>
<p>In both cases, the special build command will generate a NuGet.Config file on the fly that contains the system access token. The restore operation will use that custom temporary config during the restore and it will succeed.</p>
<p>However, if you later try running dotnet build or dotnet publish it?ll fail - because there?s an implicit restore that runs during those. These will not have the system credentials in place. You have to use --no-restore on builds, for example, to avoid the auto-restore. It can get painful in a larger build.</p>
<p>If you have a build script, like a bash or PowerShell script, manually executing dotnet restore in that script will <em>also</em> not work. You <em>must</em> use the build tasks to get the magic to happen.</p>
<h1>Option 2: Use the Azure Artifacts Credential Provider</h1>
<p>Another option in the docs is that you can use the Azure Artifacts credential provider. While it seems this is primarily geared toward running on build agents you host yourself, you can possibly get this working on hosted agents.</p>
<p><strong>I have not tried this myself.</strong> I went with option 3, below. However, if you want to give it a shot, here?s what you?d do.</p>
<p>First, you?ll want to be aware of how NuGet credential providers work. I don?t mean the internals, but, like, where you need to put the credential provider executable to make it work and how to troubleshoot it. All of that is documented.</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Download the latest release of the credential provider. Make sure you get the version that will run on your <em>build agent</em>, not your <em>development machine</em>.</li>
<li>Follow the instructions in the readme to find the self-contained executable version of the credential provider in the archive you just downloaded.</li>
<li>Extract the credential provider to somewhere in the source you?ll be building. Maybe a separate build folder.</li>
<li>As part of your build pipeline, you?ll need to? <ul>
<li>Set the NUGET_CREDENTIALPROVIDERS_PATH to point to the build folder in your checked-out source that contains the provider.</li>
<li>On Linux, you may need to chmod +x that provider.</li>
<li>Set the VSS_NUGET_EXTERNAL_FEED_ENDPOINTS to indicate the location of your external NuGet feed and provide the system access token. It takes a JSON format: <"endpointCredentials": [<"endpoint":"http://example.index.json", "username":"vsts", "password":"$(System.AccessToken)">]></li>
</ul>

</ul>
</p>
<p>In the VSS_NUGET_EXTERNAL_FEED_ENDPOINTS you?ll notice the use of the $(System.AccessToken) variable. That?s a predefined system variable in Azure DevOps build pipelines. You?ll see that again later.</p>
<p>Anyway, if all the planets have aligned, when you run your standard dotnet restore or NuGet restore , it will use the credential provider for authentication. The credential provider will use the environment variable and magic will happen.</p>
<p>One other note there - the username vsts isn?t special. It can be any value you want, the endpoint doesn?t actually end up checking. It just can?t be omitted.</p>
<h1>Option 3: Update NuGet.Config</h1>
<p>The final option is to update your NuGet.Config on the fly with the system access token as part of the build. <strong>I went with this option because it was simpler and had fewer moving pieces.</strong></p>
<p>In your source you likely already have a NuGet.Config file that has both the standard NuGet.org feed and your private Azure DevOps feed in it. It should look something like this:</p>
<p>The name, Azure DevOps , is the key here. Doesn?t matter what you name it, just make sure you remember it. You?ll need it.</p>

<p>Application testing is one of those tasks that was traditionally done manually, but this is not fast enough when you want to implement DevOps practices. You need something that works well with engineering disciplines like Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment.</p>
<p>In this course, Application Testing with Azure DevOps and Visual Studio 2019, you will get started with the engineering discipline around automated testing, using Azure DevOps and Visual Studio. First, you will define a good test strategy for your team, using the Agile Test pyramid to learn what tests you must write. Next, you will write your business logic and use the continuous test runner to get feedback while you write code and then integrate them in your CI build.</p>
<p>Finally, you will dive into using selenium to test your web application and integrate this into Azure DevOps, as well as learn how to use containers to set up your test data fast and consistently for your test suites using SQL server.</p>
<p>After completing this course, you will be able to define a test strategy for your team and use Visual Studio to write unit tests using frameworks like MSTest, Nunit, Xunit, or any other framework you like.</p>
