Azure DevOps Integration

InsightAppSec integrates with Azure DevOps build and release pipelines to empower development teams to autonomously test the integrity of an application at runtime within their own CI/CD workflow. Using the InsightAppSec Azure DevOps extension within an Azure DevOps Pipeline gives security teams essential feedback regarding a web application’s security posture and risk status as part of an integrated CI/CD task and allows development teams to pass/fail and fix fast.

Overview

The InsightAppSec Azure DevOps Extension utilizes the InsightAppSec RESTful API to dynamically retrieve applications, launch scans, monitor their progress, and generate reports based upon scan results. This extension can be leveraged as both a Build and Release task within Azure DevOps.

Key Capabilities

The extension is designed with the following capabilities:

Launch a new InsightAppSec scan during build or release

Perform scan monitoring

Provide a metrics report of scan results

Provide raw scan results

Enforce scan gating based on vulnerability query filtering Scan gating provides an automated way to fail tasks as part of a build should scan results meet a defined vulnerability query, stopping certain risk from being promoted into production.

Metrics Report Output

Once the scan within the build or release pipeline has been completed, a report will be generated and written to the current working directory in Azure DevOps. It contains metrics on vulnerability severity and attack modules retrieved from the scan.

This extension utilizes the InsightAppSec RESTful API to perform actions, such as retrieving applications and launching scans. To allow for this, we must first configure a connection to this API so all extension functionality can proceed accordingly. Click New service connection to begin with this configuration, then select the Rapid7 InsightAppSec connection type.

Provide a “Connection name” for this service connection, preferably something specific to note that this is associated with InsightAppSec. The Region can be selected from the dropdown, and it refers to your Rapid7 InsightAppSec region. The API Token is a unique key that will also be provided by Rapid7 and serve as an identifier for API authentication.

Click OK to create the connection. The connection will be listed under "Service Connections", should you ever need to edit it.

Create a Pipeline with the InsightAppSec Extension

With the service connection configured, the next step is to actually create a build or release pipeline that will utilize the new extension.

On the left menu, hover over Pipelines and navigate to either Builds or Releases, depending on on the type of pipeline you wish to create.

Any existing pipelines, along with their success or failure status, will be listed here. The InsightAppSec extension can be added to a brand new pipeline or within an existing one. This guide will detail adding it to a new pipeline, though the steps for existing pipelines remain largely the same.

Start by clicking the + New dropdown, and then select New build pipeline.

The new pipeline wizard will open. You can either select your repository via the provided YAML options, or use the classic editor to do so without YAML. In this example, we’ll proceed with the classic editor.

This will take you to another page for repository selection. Select the appropriate source, project, and branch options, and click Continue.

Next is the template selection. If preferred, select from the several existing templates, or otherwise select Empty job at the top to begin from scratch.

This will start a fresh template to allow for the addition of any number of tasks. Click the + sign on “Agent job 1” to add a task where we can utilize the Rapid7 InsightAppSec extension.

A full list of tasks will be displayed. Use the search box at the top right and search for “InsightAppSec” to quickly find the Rapid7 extension. You will see both the Marketplace listing, which displays the status of the extension (in this case it should be "Installed"), and the task itself that can be added to a pipeline. Hover over the task and select the Add button to add it as a task for the pipeline.

You may see a "Some settings need attention" warning associated with the task due to the fact that it has some fields that are required. The pipeline will not save if these fields are not addressed. Click on the newly added task to view all of its fields.

This is the initial view of the task and its settings. These settings will allow for configuration of the task, its connection to InsightAppSec, and its scanning. Here is a list of all the settings in greater detail:

Display name - The name of the task as it will appear in the pipeline.

IAS Connection - A service connection that allows for connection and authentication to the InsightAppSec API. Drop-down menu containing the connection that was shown configured in a previous step.

Application - A drop-down menu to select the InsightAppSec application that will be scanned.

Scan Configuration - A text field to input the InsightAppSec scan configuration that will be utilized in the scan.

Wait for scan completion? - Option used to determine whether the pipeline will continue to the next step after launching the scan, or whether it will wait for its completion.

Scan Status Interval - The frequency (in minutes) that the scan’s status will be checked upon and logged. Dependent on “Wait for scan completion” being checked.

Generate findings report? - Option used to generate a raw JSON report that contains all findings from a completed scan.

Fail scan on timeout? - Option used to determine whether the scan will be cancelled and marked as failed if it reaches the timeout limit. Dependent on “Wait for scan completion” being checked.

Timeout - The timeout for the scan completion (in minutes). Dependent on “Fail scan on timeout” being checked.

Scan Gating - Option used to determine whether the build will fail if the provided query returns results.

Vulnerability Query - The query executed against the completed scan’s findings to retrieve any matching vulnerabilities. Dependent on the option “Scan Gating” being checked.

Below is a full example configuration of the settings within the task. Note the usage of the “Wait for scan completion” option and its dependent fields, as well as the usage of Scan Gating. In this case, that query will result in the build failing, should the scan return any vulnerabilities whose severity is HIGH.

Once you have configured the settings for the Rapid7 InsightAppSec task, as well as completed any additional tasks you want in the pipeline, select one of the two Save options to ensure the pipeline is saved for future use. “Save” will simply save the pipeline’s current state, while “Save & queue” will immediately launch the pipeline and begin with the execution of each configured task.

Output

Once the scan within the build or release pipeline has completed, a report will be generated and written to the Build.ArtifactStagingDirectory in Azure DevOps. It contains metrics on vulnerability severity and attack modules retrieved from the scan.

To utilize the contents of this report, an additional step can be added to the pipeline to save it as an artifact that will be associated with the build. The step is titled “Publish pipeline artifact” and can be used multiple times within the same build pipeline.

Below is an example of the configuration that should be used with this step, as the Build.ArtifactStagingDirectory is currently where the report is published by default.

Note that the “Wait for scan completion” option must be checked in order to retrieve the report in this manner, because it is comprised of the results that are generated upon scan completion.

File directory or path: $(Build.ArtifactStagingDirectory) Artifact name: insightappsec-scan-metrics.json

This page, accessible via the Builds menu option under Pipelines, shows the details of a completed build pipeline. Note the blue Artifacts button at the top right of the page. This is where the report will be stored with the build, and it can be downloaded as needed for any additional usage.

If you choose to generate a findings report as well, the exact same “Publish pipeline artifact” step can be added to the pipeline a second time to save that report as its own artifact, with the name insightappsec-scan-findings.json.

Troubleshooting

The extension doesn’t appear when I search for it while creating a pipeline.

The extension must first be installed under your organization in order for it to be available for usage in a pipeline. Go to the Azure DevOps homepage (https://dev.azure.com/organizationName) and click on Organization Settings, then select Extensions. Check to see if the extension is listed under the Installed tab. If not, then you can find it under its Visual Studio Marketplace Listing.

The pipeline failed and I’m not sure why.

There are logs available within the Rapid7 InsightAppSec step of the pipeline that can tell you why the pipeline may have failed. Go into Pipelines under Builds or Releases, then select the build that failed. You can click the Rapid7 InsightAppSec step here to view all of the logs and any error messages that may have resulted in pipeline failure.

There are API errors occurring in the logs when running the pipeline.

API errors are most likely due to an issue with the connection that was setup to be used with this extension. In the Rapid7 InsightAppSec Connection that you created, double check the URL and the API key fields that were entered. The URL should be formatted as follows: https://us.api.insight.rapid7.com/ias/v1

With the “us” value being the only thing that would potentially differ. This value is dependent on your region. A full list of supported region codes is documented here: https://insight.help.rapid7.com/docs/pr ... ed-regions

I didn’t get any reports saved in Azure DevOps after my scan completed.

This could occur for a couple reasons: The “Wait for scan completion” option wasn’t checked. This must be checked in order for reports to be generated. The scan was considered a “failed scan” for any number of reasons, and reports are not generated for a failed scan. Check the logs for the InsightAppSec task to find out why the scan failed. The pipeline is missing the Publish Pipeline Artifact step(s) required for saving those reports as artifacts. Though the reports are always generated for a successful scan, they are not saved as artifacts without the usage of Publish Pipeline Artifact. Refer to the extension’s configuration guide to see an example of this extra artifact step.

The scan portion of the pipeline isn’t logging enough.

You can control the frequency of logging a scan’s status with the “Scan Status Interval” field. Inputting a 5 in this field will result in logging the scan’s current status every 5 minutes, for instance. The lower the number, the more frequent the logs. Other errors that occur during the scan will always be immediately logged, regardless of this number.

The scan gating didn’t seem to work and my build was successful.

Double check the query that was input in the Vulnerability Query field. This requires a specific type of formatting that could result in the query not returning any results if not adhered to. Here’s an example of scan gating based on severity. Note the single quotes used.

Additional query options can be found in the InsightAppSec API documentation. Only filters for the Vulnerability Resource Type should be leveraged.

The pipeline immediately went to the next step upon launching the scan, without giving any scan status updates.

To receive logging with scan status updates, you must check the “Wait for scan completion box?” and provide a “Scan Status Interval” during configuration. Otherwise the pipeline will proceed to the next task immediately after launching the scan in InsightAppSec.

Immediately moving on to the next task can be helpful in environments where no gating or feedback to Azure DevOps is necessary and teams only want to trigger scans when new changes are made available.

The logs say that my scan timed out.

Failing the scan on timeout is an option included in the extension. If it timed out, then the scan is taking longer than expected to complete based on this configuration. You can either uncheck the “Fail scan on timeout?” option, or increase the “Timeout” number. It may also be worth double-checking whether the scan was in a state of PENDING for a long time, since this could indicate some amount of time was lost due to issues with engine availability.

There’s an error that mentions an invalid application or scan configuration.

This is most likely an issue with the value input for the Scan Configuration during setup. This field is not a dropdown option, but rather is a plain text input field. This means that there’s the potential for mistakes or typos in this field. It’s also possible that the scan configuration and/or application were deleted since the last time the task was configured.

Eduard Kabrinskiy - Tfs backlog management - Кабринский Эдуард

Tfs backlog management

[youtube]

Tfs backlog management Latest news headlines for today Tfs backlog management

ALM With VS 2012 and TFS 2012: Backlog Management

Now we are in part five of a ten-part series on Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) using Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio Team Foundation Server 2012. In case you havenРІР‚в„ўt read any of my previous posts, please do so: (series overview; part one:Р’ Teams without Barriers; part two:Р’ TFS Online; part three:Р’ Tool Overview; and part four:Р’ Before You Begin).

LetРІР‚в„ўs look at how we can manage our backlogs more efficiently using various tools that Visual Studio Team Foundation Service (TFS) provides. Managing backlog items in an Excel workbook is now an old fashioned way of doing it after the release of the new Visual Studio Team Foundation Service. Now you can manage your backlog in TFS. You can add backlog items to the team project and when your team plans the next iteration, they use the backlog page to identify the items for the iteration backlog and break those items down into tasks.

CREATING ITEMS IN THE BACKLOG

To migrate from using Excel to maintain backlog items, you should start using Team Web Access to add items to the product backlog.

You can open Team Web Access in multiple ways: You can click on Web Access on Team Explorer and it will open up the home page for your Team Project; you can also go to the URL directly if you are aware of it

Click on Product Backlog Item to add a new Backlog Item. Enter the Title and all the relevant information for the backlog item and then save the backlog item into the product backlog

The other way to add Backlog Items to the Product Backlog is to be on the Backlog Items page and then enter the Title to add a new backlog item.Р’

CHANGE PRIORITY FOR AN ITEM IN THE BACKLOG

Whenever you add items to the Backlog, they keep adding to the top of the list giving them the highest priority unless you select an item and then click Add which will add them above the selected item in the backlog.

To explicitly change priority of the backlog item, all you need to do is drag the backlog item to wherever needed and that will change the priority of the Backlog Item as well.

ESTIMATE EFFORT AND BUSINESS VALUE

Estimating effort for a backlog item can be done through planning poker with the team. This will give you a Fibonacci estimate of the effort.

You should talk to the product owners and users to assess the business value of each item and then come up with numbers for those as well. This can be a dollar amount or a Fibonacci number depending whatРІР‚в„ўs liked by the team

Record the amount of effort, the business value, or both and when you finish, save and close the item.

PLANNING THE ITERATION

For the next development iteration, your team should meet to determine its capacity and discuss the product backlog items that it can implement and complete in that iteration.

The Scrum master runs the meeting, records any time off the team members plan to take, creates work items for the tasks the team determines are required by each backlog item, and checks the teamРІР‚в„ўs capacity along the way by using the team projectРІР‚в„ўs backlog page in Team Web Access.

DETERMINE THE TEAMРІР‚в„ўS CAPACITY FOR THIS ITERATION

Before the meeting starts, the Scrum Master needs to go to the capacity pane of the backlog page for the current iteration and talk to the team about any possible time off anyone on the team could be taking and sets the number of hours each member of the team works per day.

On the capacity pane, type the number of hours of work in a typical workday for each member on the team.

For each team member who takes one or more days off, choose, and enter the number of days off.

CREATE TASKS FOR A BACKLOG ITEM

Since the team reviewed and prioritized the product backlog items based on their value, level of risk, and dependencies, itРІР‚в„ўs now time to assign items to the current iteration (Sprint 1).

Your team should discuss each task required to complete the backlog item, and the Scrum Master should create a task work item for each task. The team estimates the number of hours of work required by each task and then the Scrum Master adds the tasks to the backlog item, assigns them to the people who will make it happen (magicians/developers), and records the estimates.

Change default and compare branch in VSTS

Part of the source code management is to be able to quickly determine the difference between your branch and the main development branch. Usually this happens to be the master but this can quickly change if you are following feature based development or trunk based development. VSTS has the concept of the compare branch where it would provide the number of commits ahead or behind data for all other branches. This helps one in quickly determining the related information by just taking a glance at the branch page.

To set a different branch as the compare branch, select the branch in the reference and click on the three dot icon:

Set another branch as the compare branch

Once its set, we can see that the compare label will shift to the newly selected branch:

Default branch is the branch which will be auto selected to merge code into, when someone creates a pull request. Again, this is usually the master branch. To change this to a different branch, first we need to get into the manage repository view or go to project settings -> repositories. After this, click on the git repository in the reference and then expand ?branches? for all the branches. After this select the ? next to the branch you want to set as default, then select ?Set as default branch?:

Set another branch as default branch

It may appear that instead of the default branch, pull requests and new branches created from the branches page will be based off the branch you set as the compare branch. However this setting is remembered on the per user basis. Setting the default branch is a way to set the default for your entire team. It is a way to set a reasonable default for when new users use your repository. However, if a user wishes they can diverge from the default by setting their own ?compare? branch.

Visual Studio Team System (VSTS)

Definition - What does Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) mean?

Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) is an integrated development environment (IDE) developed as a software product by Microsoft Corp. to facilitate software project creation, development and management. VSTS is composed of four subproducts:

Visual Studio, a development environment

Visual Studio Test Professional for test data management and test case execution

Team Foundation Server, which offers collaboration of source code files and centralized database

Visual Studio Lab Management, which provides features to create a virtual environment for software testers

Techopedia explains Visual Studio Team System (VSTS)

A software development task often consists of several stages and procedures with different people involved in each stage:

The business analyst responsible for analyzing the given problem and representing it visually

The project manager who allocates budget and resources and frames a schedule for the project development activities

The software architect who studies the system and its functions in depth and develops necessary algorithms

The developer who writes code based on the algorithms

The software test engineer who tests the code to fix bugs and defects

The deployment team responsible for delivering the fully operational product to the client

Each of the members needs a different tool to work with. For example, the project manager is only interested in working with tools that provide an insight regarding the budget of the project and is not interested in tools associated with testing. Therefore, a software package is needed that can meet the demands of the people involved in software development. VSTS offers a software package with several sub-packages that incorporate all essential features.

The entire functionality of VSTS relies on the core component known as the Team Foundation Server (TFS). It facilitates development collaboration among different teams of people working on the same software project, offers a repository for storing configuration objects, and enables data collection and project tracking. It is the main back-end component of VSTS.

The Writer?s Guide to Worldbuilding: How to Create Captivating Settings

A book like A Game of Thrones, a movie like Star Wars, or even a video game like Final Fantasy can make it appear their creators have effortlessly built a fantasy world out of nothing.

In fact, these worlds may feel as real as the world you live in.

How do they do it? More importantly, how can you do it?

More than two-thirds of my nearly 200 books are novels, but creating fictional worlds never seems to get easier.

It?s an art, and in genres such as Fantasy or Science Fiction, worldbuilding is more important than ever and can make or break your story.

In this worldbuilding guide, I?ll give you tips to follow and errors to avoid.

Worldbuilding can be as complex as designing a unique venue with exotic creatures, rich political histories, and even new religions. Or it can be as simple as tweaking the history of the world we live in.

Go as big as you want to, but remember: Worldbuilding is serious business.

You want to create a world in which your readers can lose themselves.

Do this well and they become not just fans, but also fanatics. Like those who obsess over:

Each approaches worldbuilding in a different way:

1: Real-World Fantasy

Here you set your story in the world we live in, but your plot is either based on a real event (as in Outlander) or is one in which historical events occur differently (for instance, had Germany won World War 2).

In Philip K. Dick?s The Man in the High Castle, he imagines a world in which Franklin Roosevelt was assassinated in the early 1930s.

2: Second-World Fantasy

Here you create new lands, species, and government. You also invent a world rich in its own history, geography, and purpose.

Some novels combine the Real World and Second World Fantasy. The Harry Potter series, for instance, is set in the world we live in but with rules and history foreign to us.

(The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland are also examples of this.)

Your job is to take readers on a journey that leaves them satisfied.

A Worldbuilding Guide (with Exercises)

Step 1: Plan but Don?t Over-Plan

Outliners prefer to map out everything before they start writing.

Pantsers, those who write by the seat of their pants, write as a process of discovery.

Largely a Pantser, I can tell you that ?discovering? a new world is a whole lot harder than building it before you get too deep into your writing.

Build your world first, and you can focus on your story.

However, over-planning can also be a problem.

Many fantasy writers tell me they become so engrossed in worldbuilding that they find reasons not to write.

Worldbuilding must not come at the expense of your story.

If you?re mostly a Pantser, like I am, you may have to spend more time planning than you?re used to.

If you?re an Outliner, draw a line in the sand and start writing as soon as you?re ready, even if you suspect you?ll have more spadework to do as you go.

Step 2: Describe Your World

Paint for your reader a world that transports them, allowing them to see, smell, hear, and touch their surroundings.

Core aspects to consider:

Climate / Environment: everything from the weather to the fundamental building blocks of your world. Is it like Earth or an alien planet?

Resources: water, food, air, etc. A post-apocalyptic world, for instance, might likely lack fuel, money, or power.

Geography: the landscape, important locations, landmarks.

When James Cameron wrote the movie Avatar, he created countless reference books on Pandora?s vegetation and climate and even botany.

In Cormac McCarthy?s The Road, the main characters live in a post-apocalyptic world covered in ash and largely devoid of life. Their entire journey revolves around finding food and water and how to stay warm.

In A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin went as far as creating maps.

Other novels that feature maps:

The Lord of the Rings

The Chronicles of Narnia

Discworld

The Princess Bride

World building questions:

How much of your world do you need to show to support the story?

How does the terrain influence your story?

What is the weather like?

How many mountains, oceans, deserts, forests?

Where are the borders?

What are the natural resources and how do they impact your story?

Step 3: Inhabit Your World

Are the inhabitants people but somehow different from you and me?

Are they aliens, monsters, or some other new species?

When writing The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien gave Frodo a past, certain personality traits, and unique morals. But he first had to determine what a hobbit looked like and how he lived.

When Worldbuilding, don?t worry yet about the individual. Establish the inhabitants as a species.

World building character questions:

How big is their population (i.e., how big is your world)?

How did they become part of your world (their backstory)?

Do they have a class system?

What are the genders, races, and species?

How do they get along with one another?

Are there alliances?

What resources do they enjoy?

What resources do they lack?

Decide what they look like.

Write a short story from one character?s POV.

Step 4: Establish the History of Your World

Many stories are defined by their pasts:

The Lord of The Rings focuses on an ancient war.

The Hunger Games is built on decades of oppression.

The Divergent trilogy follows characters unaware of what the world used to be like.

When worldbuilding, consider:

The Deep Past: What happened way back when that fuels the present economy, environment, culture, etc.

Trauma: Wars, famines, plagues, and their aftermaths.

Power Shifts: Political, religious, or technological.

World building questions:

Who have been the major rulers?

What took place during their reigns?

What environmental disasters took place (famine, plagues, floods?)?

What wars have taken place?

Next, organize all this history chronologically.

Step 5: Determine the Culture of Your World

Religion

Societal Structure

Political Power and Government

In Star Wars, for instance, religion (The Jedi vs. The Dark Side), societal structure (slaves and free), and politics (the trade wars) play huge roles.

Worldbuilding questions:

What is the political structure of your world?

Who holds the most power?

Does your world revolve around totalitarianism, authoritarianism, or democracy?

Will your characters bend or break the rules?

Are the rules considered fair, or is society opposed to them?

How are inhabitants punished if they break the rules?

What is the religious belief system?

What gods exist?

How do religious rituals or customs manifest themselves?

Is there conflict between different religious groups?

How do different social classes behave?

How are gender roles defined?

How do families, marriages, and other relationships operate?

What behaviors are considered improper or immoral?

Step 6: Power Your World

Is your world energized by equipment or magic?

Equipment involves technology like Artificial Intelligence, space or time travel, or futuristic weaponry.

Or it could focus on simpler technology like swords, guns, or horses.

Magic allows you to take your worldbuilding to new realms.

In 2001: A Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke explained how things worked and why, making it as realistic and factual as possible.

When writing his futuristic novels, Iain M. Banks referenced droids and spaceships but never explained how they worked.

The same applies to magic in your story.

You can either explain how it all works or simply focus on how it is used and why.

Worldbuilding questions:

Does magic exist in your world?

How does it manifest itself?

Can it be controlled?

Can it be learned or are people born with it?

Where does the magic come from?

Are wands or staffs, etc., needed to perform this magic?

Do people fear it or embrace it, and what makes the difference?

Is there good and evil magic, and how do they differ?

What other technologies do people use?

How do they travel and communicate?

Do governments use technology to gain or maintain power?

In Fantastic Beasts, J.K. Rowling wrote a guide that focuses on how the magic works.

If magic or futuristic technology play roles in your world, consider doing the same.

It doesn?t have to be as detailed or as complete as Fantastic Beasts. So long as you have a resource that keeps all the rules in one place, you?ll keep your world (and the rules it lives by) consistent.

These Worldbuilding Tips Can Help You Write Attention-Grabbing Fiction

No two writers will approach worldbuilding in the same way. These tips are here to help guide you, but what matters most is your own imagination.

Have fun with worldbuilding, and your reader will thank you.

Devops tfs - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Devops tfs

[youtube]

Devops tfs Latest news online Devops tfs

TFS vs Azure DevOps Server: What Is the Difference?

Since it was launched in 2005, Team Foundation Server (TFS) has evolved significantly until Microsoft launched Azure DevOps in 2018. As a part of the broader shift to cloud services, the company renamed the cloud-based Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) to Azure DevOps Services and TFS as Azure DevOps Server. Let us take a look at the differences between TFS vs Azure DevOps Server and identify the various reasons to upgrade.

Why Upgrade from TFS to Azure DevOps?

Azure DevOps Server 2019 was more than just rebranded TFS. Several new features were introduced. Let us look at some of the additional benefits when you upgrade from TFS to Azure DevOps.

Improved Navigation Experience

TFS was primarily designed for admins. Despite incremental improvements, many users found it complicated to use. With Azure DevOps, users enjoy a seamless experience that is consistent across both Azure DevOps service and Azure DevOps Server. The navigation is inspired by Microsoft?s Fluent design language that is being rolled out across its offerings for consistency and predictability. With this capability, users can switch between services easily. The user interface is more responsive, and users can focus on their work better. The UI overhaul is the most notable difference between TFS and Azure DevOps.

Simplified Artifact and Release Management

Users can leverage Artifacts even with the Basic License. Additionally, the Release Management Deployment Pipelines will not have to be procured separately as it has been integrated with Azure DevOps Server. With this, users can take advantage of the new Build and Release pages and use the YAML data serialization standard to code configuration files. This was not supported in TFS 2018.

Tighter GitHub Enterprise Integration

As a part of enhancing project management capabilities, teams using Azure DevServer can connect GitHub Enterprise with Azure Boards. The commits and pull requests in GitHub can be used in conjunction with the backlogs, different work item types, tools, and boards in Azure Boards that is a part of Azure DevOps. There is no disruption in the workflow as commitments will be merged in the appropriate branches.

Azure SQL Database Support

Both Azure DevOps server and TFS require SQL Server. With Microsoft?s focus shifting to the cloud, Azure DevOps server can be hosted on virtual machines running on Azure. These support Azure SQL Database that can give users superior scaling and backup options without increasing administrative costs for running these complex services.

Advanced Search Capabilities

There have been considerable enhancements in the search capabilities in Azure DevOps Server.

The first addition is the introduction of my work flyout. With this feature, information from other components of the product will be accessible from whichever part users are currently working on. This is similar to a notification bar on which you can search for important updates without dropping your current activity.

The other improvement is the ability to expand the search box from the product header. This has been added based on user feedback to improve navigation.

Apps4Rent Can Assist with Azure DevOps

Unlike some of Microsoft?s other on-premises solutions such as SharePoint Server and Exchange Server, TFS (now Azure DevOps Server) is upgraded every year. However, in the TFS vs Azure DevOps comparison, the upgrade is radical and not incremental as it had been until 2018. So, while it is necessary to upgrade from your existing on-premises TFS sooner or later, the choice between Azure DevOps Server vs Azure DevOps can be more subjective.

The command below will create a service principal with the name ?ServicePrincipalName?. Replace the value and execute the command in the cloud shell.

Azure will generate an appID, which is the Service principal client ID used by Azure DevOps Server. It will also generate a strong password, which is the Service principal key. The final value of interest is the tenant, which is the Tenant ID. Copy these values to the service connection form in the other tab.

Execute the command below to retrieve details about your Azure subscription.

The id is the Subscription ID you need to create the service connection. The name is the Subscription name you need. Copy these values as well.

The form should now be complete. Click Verify connection to make sure the values work as expected. Click OK when verified. You will now be able to reference this connection from release pipeline tasks.

Azure devops pat - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops pat

[youtube]

Azure devops pat World news online Azure devops pat

Microsoft Azure DevOps ? REST APIs ? Part 3 ? Personal Access Tokens (PATs) ? ?Revoke?, ?Edit? and ?Regenerate? operations

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ?? I hope we all are safe ?? STAY SAFE, STAY HEALTHY, STAY HOME ??

Background: We have started discussing Azure DevOps. In last 9 articles of Azure DevOps we discussed

In this article we will move ahead and will discuss few more operations ? ?Revoke?, ?Edit? and ?Regenerate? on Personal Access Token (PAT), which we created in last article. We need PATs for authenticating Azure DevOps. In one of the upcoming article we need to discuss ? calling REST APIs programmatically where we need Personal Access Token for authenticating DevOps.

Take away from this article: At the end of this article we will got to know about different operations ? ?Revoke?, ?Regenerate? and ?Edit? on PAT and their scenarios.

Details : There are few options available for the respective PAT as shown in below Fig

Navigate to Personal Access Token (PAT) home page from User settings >> Personal access tokensas shown in below Fig

We will be redirected to Personal home page =>https://dev.azure.com/ /_usersSettings/tokens ?here, https://dev.azure.com/prashamsabadra/_usersSettings/tokens as shown in below Fig

On Personal Access Tokens home page, if we will select any PAT we will have options ? Revoke, Edit and Regenerate options available in command bar as shown in below Fig

Edit Personal access token :

Select Personal access token which we want to Edit

Click on ?Edit? link from top command bar as shown in below Fig

We will have ?Edit a personal access token? dialog as shown in below fig which is similar when we have dialog while creating new Personal Access Token as shown in below fig

From this dialog we can edit the respective metadata (Expiry date, Scopes ?)

Here we have an option to extend the expiry date for selected PAT

Regenerate :

If some how we lost previous copied PAT or expired the existing PAT and forgot to edit respective PAT then we have ?Regenerate? option there

There is ?Regenerate? option in command bar appears after selecting the respective PAT from the listings as shown in below fig

Once we have clicked on ?Regenerate? command and it success then we have ?Success!? pane as shown in below fig

Please read carefully the warning ? We need to copy the PAT and save it properly. DevOps doesnt stores it and once ?Success!? pane is closed we wont have opportunity to recover it. We need to again ?Regenerate? it.

On successful regeneration of PAT we have get email notification as shown in below fig

Revoke :

If we are done with the respective PAT or if it is compromised (in this case need to take immediate action) then we have an option to ?Revoke? it

We will have an ?Revoke? option available from the command bar

On clicking of ?Revoke? link we will have ?Confirmation? dialog for ?Revoke? as shown in below fig

Once we have ?Revoke? operation done successfully, the respective PAT will be removed from the PAT listing as shown in below fig

Best Practices : Generate PAT for smaller duration. If it expires then regenerate. User who created the PAT receives notification one week before expiration then respective user can take necessary action like extending expiry, regenerating new token or editing the scopes for given expiration and so on

Note : Once user left the company and if he removed from Azure AD, then PATs token invalidate within an hour, since refresh token is valid only for an hour

Next Article:

We have very good series going on Azure DevOps. Please have a look once ? https://knowledge-junction.com/?s=Azure+DevOps

Thanks for reading ?? Feel free to discuss / comment / questions ?? SHARING IS CARING ??
