3. Set sprint capacity

Azure Boards | Azure DevOps Server 2020 | Azure DevOps Server 2019 | TFS 2018 - TFS 2013

As a next step, you'll want to determine your team's actual capacity. Whereas velocity correlates to how your team estimates requirements, capacity correlates to actual task time - either hours or days. Capacity takes into consideration the variation in work hours by team members as well as holidays, vacation days, and non-working days.

Because days off and time available for each team member can vary from sprint to sprint, you can set capacity for each sprint. The capacity tool helps you make sure your team isn't over or under committed for the sprint. Also, as you work day-to-day, you'll be able to see if your team is on track.

Set team capacity for a sprint

Copy capacity from the previous sprint to the current sprint

Track capacity when performing multiple activities

Add or remove user accounts from capacity planning for a sprint

Track capacity when working on more than one team

If you haven't set up sprints yet for your team, go here to do that now.

Prerequisites

You must connect to a project. If you don't have a project yet, create one.

You must be added to a project as a member of the Contributors or Project Administrators security group. To get added, Add users to a project or team.

To view or set capacity, you must be granted Basic access or higher. For details, see About access levels. Users with Stakeholder access can't view or set capacity.

To set capacity, you must be a member of the team. For details, see Add users to a project or team.

About the Activity or Discipline pick-list items

The values displayed for Activity (Agile, Basic, or Scrum) or Discipline (CMMI) reflect a union of all values defined for the Activity or Discipline fields in all projects within the organization.

To change the Activity or Discipline menu selections, see Add and manage fields.

The values displayed for Activity (Agile, Basic, or Scrum) or Discipline (CMMI) reflect a union of all values defined for the Activity or Discipline fields in all projects within the project collection. Or, if your project has been customized, with the field assigned to type="Activity" within the ProcessConfiguration file .

To change the Activity or Discipline menu selections, see Add or modify a field, customize a picklist.

Capacity per day entries

Most teams specify capacity in terms of hours. However, you can also specify it in days or any other units your team chooses. For example, .5 days would correspond to 4 hours for a typical 8 hour day. Choose the same unit your team uses to estimate and track their time. For example, the entries they'll make to the Original Estimate or Remaining Work fields.

Open a Sprint backlog for a team

From your web browser, open your product backlog. (1) Check that you have selected the right project, (2) choose Boards>Sprints, (3) select the correct team from the team selector menu, and lastly (4), choose Capacity.

To choose another team, open the selector and select a different team or choose the Browse all sprints option. Or, you can enter a keyword in the search box to filter the list of team backlogs for the project.

To choose a different sprint than the one shown, open the sprint selector and choose the sprint you want.

The system lists only those sprints that have been selected for the current team focus. If you don't see the sprints you want listed, then choose New Sprint from the menu, and then choose Select existing iteration. For details, see Define iteration (sprint) paths.

From your web browser, open your team's product backlog. (1) Select the project/team from the project/teams selector, choose (2) Work, (3) Backlogs, and then (4) the product backlog, which is Backlog items (for Scrum), Stories (for Agile), or Requirements (for CMMI).

To choose another team, open the project/team selector and select a different team or choose the Browse option.

The set of sprints selected for your team appears in the left pane. If you don't see any sprints listed, you can add sprints or select existing sprints for your team's use. To learn how, see Define sprints.

Choose the sprint you want to plan.

The system lists only those sprints that have been selected for the current team focus. If you don't see the sprints you want listed, then see Define iteration (sprint) paths.

Set capacity for the team and team members

From the Capacity page, you can add team members, enter the team time off, and set capacity and days off for each team member.

If you don't see your team members listed, add them. Choose the action icon and select Add all team members. For this feature to work, team members will have been added to the team.

The Add all team members action retrieved a maximum of 100 team members. If you have more team members to add, then you can add them one by one by choosing Add user.

If you need to add other contributors to your project, choose the Add user.

Next, set any time off that a team member will take. For the entire team days off, choose the 0 days link as shown.

In the Days off for dialog, select the start and end days during the sprint that the team member or team will take off.

Your sprint planning and tracking tools automatically consider days off when calculating capacity and sprint burndown. You only have to indicate planned days off for the team. You set weekend days or other recurring days off under your team's Settings, Working days page.

Now, set the Activity/Discipline and Capacity per day for each team member. If you track capacity simply by team member, you can leave the Activity or Discipline selection unassigned.

For example, Christie Church's capacity is 6 hours/day for design work.

If you don't see your team members listed, add them. Choose the Add missing team members icon. For this feature to work, team members will have been added to the team.

If you need to add other contributors to your project, choose the Add user icon.

Next, set any time off that a team member will take. For the entire team days off, choose the 0 days link as shown.

In the Days off for the entire team dialog, select the start and end days during the sprint that the team will take off.

Your sprint planning and tracking tools automatically consider days off when calculating capacity and sprint burndown. Leave those days of the week that your team doesn't work unchecked in your team's Settings, Working days page.

Now, set the Activity/Discipline and Capacity per day for each team member. If you track capacity simply by team member, you can leave the Activity or Discipline selection unassigned.

For example, Christie Church's capacity is 6 hours/day for design work.

TFS 2015.1

TFS 2015, TFS 2013

"

Copy capacity planning from the previous sprint

By copying the capacity from the previous sprint, you save time. With the basics defined, all you have to do is adjust the capacity based on individual and team days off and capacity allocation per activity.

This feature is available from TFS 2015.1 and later versions.

Notice that only the capacity per day and activity are copied over. Individual and team days off remain unset. The copy operation always copies the latest updates made to the previous sprint. So you can repeat the copy operation if you've made changes to the previous sprint that you want to copy to the latest sprint.

For example, here we choose Sprint 2 and copy the capacity set for Sprint 1.

Remove a user from capacity

To remove a user, choose the option from the users action menu. This will not remove the user from the team.

This feature is available from TFS 2015.1 and later versions.

Azure DevOps: Show Me the JSON!

Creating resources in Azure, while not difficult, can be time consuming if you use the manual steps. One way to automate the process is by using JSON templates to save time and enforce standards. In this article, Brian Flynn describes how to create JSON templates for deploying a network with virtual machines.

Are you building and deploying Azure ARM resources, click by click, in the portal? If you haven?t learned how to deploy with JSON template files yet, then you should. And I hope that this article will help.

Using JSON documents to define and deploy Azure resources, can save you lots of time by avoiding a step-by-step mouse clicking through a web GUI, waiting for each page to load, so you can define your resources. There are many rinse and repeat steps when building out a network. You can also use these JSON templates to improve consistency of standard naming conventions and adherence to configuration details of commonly used Azure resources, while parameterizing for things that change almost every time, i.e. resource names, IP addresses, usernames, passwords, etc.

In this article, I?ll teach you a little about JSON, then walk you through the process of building a JSON document that will define

a resource group

a virtual network

two subnets

network security groups

a VPN gateway

a VPN connection

a managed disk VM

an unmanaged disk VM

public IP addresses

It takes about 30 minutes to execute that whole build out, and 25 minutes of it is just waiting for the VPN gateway to spin up. It builds the two servers in about five minutes!

I like to deploy using the Templates blade in Azure, because there are fewer authentication prompts to deal with, and it enables me to test the process for less technical users who would prefer to not look at PowerShell scripts or .NET code. Figure 1 shows the first page of a template.

To get to the Templates blade, click All services and search for Templates. If you want to add it to your side menu, click the star. Once there, click the Add button. Here you can define a template. You can also copy and paste in my final JSON document and try it out. Figure 1 shows a template.

Figure 1: The template edtior

Once you click Deploy, you?ll see a screen where settings can be modified before your resources are created as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Deploying the Azure template

When you use the portal to define and deploy resources such as VMs, behind the scenes, it is building a JSON document for each that it will process to deploy your defined resources. You can download all of these JSON documents! To see JSON documents for your existing resources, open any resource, then click Automation Script. There, you will see a script that defines everything in your subscription as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3: The resource automation script

Another option is to define a new resource, then click the Download template and parameters link instead of the Create button. Figure 4 shows this option.

Figure 4: Download instead of creating

Downloading the template for resources is a great shortcut for learning how to create new JSON templates for future deployments!

JSON Basics

Let?s start by looking at the basics of JSON documents. JSON documents are text documents that convey structured data, such as name-value pairs of strings, integers, and Booleans. The documents are organized into arrays and documents, where documents are also collections of strings, integers, Booleans, and arrays of them, too. Name-value pairs are quoted strings, separated by colons. When defining integers or Booleans only the name needs to be quoted. Arrays are defined with square brackets [ and ], and the array elements are separated by commas. Data that defines objects is often defined in JSON ?documents,? which are collections of name value pairs of any data type. In JSON, documents are defined with curly brackets <and >.

An empty JSON document would contain only <>. Here is a simple Hello World JSON document that is like a contact card. I?ve demonstrated basic strings and an object. But no arrays, here. There will be plenty of array examples below.

DevOps vs. agile

Both DevOps and agile are modern software development practices aimed at providing a framework to produce a part of a product, a launch, or a release.

Understanding the difference

Although both DevOps and agile result in the development of software, they have different approaches, involve different groups and departments, and structure production differently.

The most important thing to know about DevOps versus agile is that they are not mutually exclusive. DevOps is a culture, fostering collaboration amongst all participants involved in the development and maintenance of software. Agile can be described as a development methodology designed to maintain productivity and drive releases with the common reality of changing needs. Although DevOps and agile are different, when used together these two methodologies lead to greater efficiency and more reliable results.

An at-a-glance comparison

When evaluating DevOps versus agile, it?s important to understand the overall philosophy of each, where they?re similar and where they?re different, as well as how to integrate each within your team. DevOps and Agile are not mutually exclusive?you can incorporate aspects of each in your business. The information below will help you gain a broader understanding of the key similarities and differences between DevOps and agile.

DevOps definition

DevOps is a software development practice that brings people, process, and technology together to deliver continuous value. The approach is divided into planning and tracking, development, build and test, delivery, and monitoring and operations. DevOps is unique in that development, IT operations, quality engineering, and security teams work together to create efficiency across all tasks involved in launching a new product, release, or update.

DevOps philosophy and focus

Rooted in stability, consistency, and planning, the DevOps culture seeks to identify new ways to improve and streamline processes. As a result, DevOps focuses on maximizing efficiency, identifying programmable processes, and increasing automation.

DevOps scope

DevOps represents the intersections of development, operations, and quality assurance. Cross-disciplinary teams unite and collaborate in the development and delivery of software.

Microsoft, at its online Ignite 2020 conference, has launched a bevy of updates that collectively further adoption of best DevOps practices on the Microsoft cloud platform, including for the first time a preview of an ability to store artifacts created using low-code Power Apps tools on GitHub.

In addition, Microsoft announced a preview of an update to Visual Studio 2019 16.8 that will add support for GitHub Codespaces, a previously announced capability that automatically creates repositories on GitHub. GitHub Codespaces is currently available in beta and soon will be accessible directly from within Visual Studio.

Microsoft also revealed it has enhanced the Git tooling experience in Visual Studio to enable more asynchronous collaborations. A GitHub extension for Visual Studio Code enables developers to work with GitHub Issues and Pull Requests directly in the editor. Development teams that need to work in real-time alternatively can employ Visual Studio Live Share.

A publish experience in Visual Studio also now has the option to generate a GitHub Actions workflow for continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) environments in Azure resources using the deployment secrets configured in a GitHub repository. GitHub Actions for Azure can now also scan Azure resources for policy violations and vulnerabilities in container images and issues involving Azure Resource Management (ARM) templates.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told conference attendees the velocity at which applications are developed and deployed has become even more critical as organizations embrace digital business transformation in the wake of the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

GitHub support for Power Apps is especially significant because it will make it easier for so-called citizen developers to collaborate with professionals developers as they jointly develop applications, he said.

Other notable updates to the Microsoft tools portfolio include a preview of an instance of the Azure Logic Apps workflow platform that can be deployed as a containerized runtime.

A .NET 5 Release Candidate is also now available, with general availability expected next month. This update adds support to smaller, faster single-file applications that use less memory when employed within microservices and containerized applications. It also includes significant performance improvements, support for Windows ARM64 and new releases of C# 9.0 and F# 5.0 languages.

Microsoft also announced several updates to App Service to make it easier and more cost-effective to migrate and modernize .NET web apps on the Azure cloud. A new Premium v3 (Pv3) App Service Plan can handle large-scale web apps, supporting more apps per instance and larger, memory-intensive apps with up to 32GB per instance. Microsoft is also making Windows Containers support in App Service generally available and will soon make Reserved Instance (RI) Pricing for App Service available to reduce costs.

Finally, Microsoft made several Kubernetes enhancements, including a preview of a start/stop cluster feature that will be added to Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), and announced general availability of an Azure Policy add-on for AKS, which makes it possible to audit and enforce policies across Kubernetes clusters. Microsoft also made generally available Bridge to Kubernetes extensions for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code that allow teams to develop against microservices within a running AKS cluster to enable debugging existing services without having to reconfigure or deploy a new cluster.

Nadella said keeping track of developer velocity and overall ?tech intensity? within an organization is critical to success. It?s not yet clear how many organizations have put the metrics in place to measure either. However, it is clear that organizations that have yet to fully embrace best DevOps practices are already being left behind.

Sometimes, we need to execute or download a script locate on a private Azure DevOps Repo.

In this story, we will learn how to use a Personal Access Token (PAT) to download a file from private repo located on Azure DevOps.

Creating a Personal Access Token (PAT)

The first step is to create a PAT.

Login into Azure DevOps and click on the User Settings menu located on the top right. Then click on the Personal access tokens menu.

Then we click on the New Token button.

Then we enter the name, set the expiration and configure the scope:

Finally , we copy the token and store it in a safe place. We will not able to see it again.

Downloading a File in Private Repo in Azure DevOps

We have a PowerShell script located in a repo:

We are looking to download this PowerShell script and execute it in our machine.

First, we will need to define some variables (please look to the above screenshot to understand variables):

Then we encode the PAT to Base64 String

We construct the download URL

Finally, we download the file to our default folder

And that?s all folks. If you liked this story, please show your support by ?? this story. Thank you for reading!

Prioritizing Waiting Jobs in Azure Pipelines

While we are working with Azure DevOps pipelines for build and deployment purpose, we use several private and hosted agents. However, sometimes there are more CI and PR builds in the queues due to limited number of parallel job availability. While we do daily tasks, there can be situations where we need to release a bug fix quickly but pipelines have long queues. At that type of situation, team has to wait prior until all the builds on the queue get completed. This blog explains the feature available in Azure DevOps as a solution to this issue.

Go to the build logs of the build pipeline which need to be started next. In the logs you would be able to see the position of the current build . As the following image the selected build is 4 th in the queue. We can click on the "Run next" to queue this build next as priority.

Once click on the "Run next", you would be able to see the current position in the queue value has changed to 1 as follows.

Go to pipelines and you would be see that selected build started before the other builds in the queue.

This post shared a small but very useful feature available in Azure DevOps. This helps you to trigger important builds without staying in the build queues for long time.

1. Create the DevOps project

Azure DevOps (previously VSTS) allows you to automate the deployment of resources, whether ARM template (JSON), PowerShell, CLI, Terraform, etc.

Today, I?m going to focus on the integration with Terraform. Be careful, I?ll not go into Terraform details in this article, so you need to know the technology.

The pricing for Azure DevOps is available here:

By default, you?ve 5 users free.

Before starting, make sure you?ve an Azure DevOps organization in your subscription:

Open via the URL your Azure DevOps and create a new project by clicking on Create project:

Give it a name and click on Create:

When the project is created, you can invite people, etc.:

On the left, go into Repos > Files and add one or more files in the directory. You can add a README for example, to initialize the project, by clicking on Initialize:

Files and add one or more files in the directory - img" src="https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/word-image-27.png" alt="go into Repos > Files and add one or more files in the directory" width="1280" height="720" srcset="https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/word-image-27.png 1280w, https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/w ... 00x169.png 300w, https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/w ... 68x432.png 768w, https://www.starwindsoftware.com/blog/w ... 24x576.png 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" data-pagespeed-url-hash="4225266476" onload="pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);" />

When the initialization is finished, you?ll have at least one file in your repository:

Here, create a folder, with 2 files, main.tf and variables.tf:

2. Terraform code

With following Terraform code, I?ll deploy 1 VNet in Azure, with 2 subnets. As you can see, for some variables, I?m using __ before and after the variable. It?s to be able to use variables, directly in Azure DevOps. The code use dis the following :

Comment 15

DevOps: DevOps is nothing but continuously deploying your requirements to production by orchestrating your Requirements to Deploy cycle. An approach by which better collaboration is enabled between the Development and Operations as most of the elements of operations become programmable. The foundation of DevOps are Continuous Integration(CI) and Continuous Deployment(CD).

DevOps is based on agile principles in which business owners and the development, operations, collaborate to deliver software in a continuous manner that enables the business to improves time to market.

Dev ? People involved in developing product.

Ops ? System engineers, administrators, operations staff, release engineers, DBAs, network engineers, Security professionals.

Agile Software Development ? collaboration of customers, product management, developers and QA to fill in the gaps and rapidly iterate towards a better product.

DevOps ? extending Agile principles beyond the boundaries of ?the code? to the entire delivered service.

Continuous Integration(CI):

CI is an approach in which Developers continuously integrated their code into a shared repository, many times this will be a Git Server. The integrated code is then built for completeness and tested at unit level by set of automated tools. The results of Build and Tests are then shared as a report to the respective developer for their actions.

Continuous Deployment(CD):

CD is the process in which the source code is migrated from one stage to other Automatically right from Development to Production. This is generally achieved using Orchestration tool such Jenkins.

DevOps for ABAP: While DevOps is familiar with other platforms, it is still in the budding stage for ABAP. SAP is coming up with many new tools like ADT(ABAP Development Tools), ABAP on Hana, so the road map for ABAP looks bright and we cannot get away from it. It is obvious now that we should think of DevOps for ABAP Stack as well.

What is the Bottle neck: CI and CD are the foundation for any DevOps, this applies to ABAP as well. ABAP comes with its own restriction of having only a centralized version management for the source code, whereas the CI can be achieved only on a distributed source code management system. This limitation makes an ABAP object to be bound only to a single developer at a time which defeats the basic purpose of CI.

Another important prerequisite for CI is Automated Unit tests. Though ABAPUnit is there for a decade, the importance of this not been assimilated by the developers yet.

Where to Start:

We need to have distributed source code management system for the ABAP stack . abapGit can be the first step to march towards our journey on DevOps. abapGit is a git client and it can run on our ABAP Stack. So now you can have your version control in a Git Server. Thanks to the Opensource project by Lars Hvam.

Now its time to move into Test Driven Devlopment(TDD) with ABAPUnit. There is a myth that TDD can be done only for new developments. That's not true. Almost all legacy code can be converted to a testable code with features like, dependency look up, dependency injection, SEAM etc. Once unit test are written, unit tests can be performed automatically. This can be achieved by calling a set of API provided by SAP along with ADT bundle. The APIs can be called from orchestration tools like Jenkins immediately after the build step.

We can also include Code coverage, Code Inspector check and ATC check also as steps in our CI cycle, These steps can also be called from Jenkins with the standard ADT APIs. This will make your CI process complete. If all the steps of CI are successful then code can be delivered to test system and this activity becomes the part of the CD process.

Next step will be to create a delivery pipeline in the process orchestration tool Jenkins with all the stages that fulfill your Develop to Deploy Cycle. The typical pipeline step will have steps; Build->UnitTests->CodeCoverageCheck->CodeInspectorCheck->CodeMigrationToQA->IntegrationTest->AcceptanceTest->DeployToProduction

Sample ABAP Delivery pipeline in Jenkins

Migration of code can be achieved by many tools in ABAP. Tools like ChaRM, CTS+, RevTrac are the most commonly used ones. An API should be exposed from the tool for a particular activity so that it can configured in Jenkins pipeline. Eg. if CodeMigrationToQA is performed by ChaRM we should expose an API from SAP Solman which can perform the Transport migration from Development to QA system.

Conclusion: DevOps on an ABAP stack is possible like any other platform by adapting right set of tools and approach. There is cultural shift required in the way the Ops and the Dev team operate and also on the way ABAP development is done going further. A detailed how to technically achieve this will published in the upcoming article. Hope this will find you a way to start your DevOps journey on ABAP stack.
