<h1>DevOps and Database Lifecycle Management</h1>
<p>Database Lifecycle Management (DLM) aims to provide a roadmap of what is required, and when, to deliver and maintain effective databases that can respond quickly to business change. How does the DevOps movement, as it applies to databases, fit into this? William Brewer explains how DevOps provides the organisational change between delivery and operations to make important parts of the process easier to introduce.</p>

<p>As internet commerce took off spectacularly in the ‘noughties’, a new breed of application became more common, one that was not only the public face of the organization but was actually intrinsic to the organization.</p>
<p>The organization was, effectively, the application but unlike the classic applications of commerce, these internet applications had to evolve continuously in the face of competition and demand from users. They did not conform to the accepted lifecycle of previous applications, and could not afford any relationship with the business other than total involvement.</p>
<p>The traditional divisions and practices of established IT simply weren’t appropriate any more. A new way of team-working had to evolve to make it possible to develop applications rapidly and deliver new functionality with as little delay as possible. DevOps in this context wasn’t just a nice idea, it was essential.</p>
<p>Today, the majority of organizations aren’t in this predicament. Instead of focusing on a handful of applications under continuous development, with a plethora of Business Intelligence satellites, most applications have a considerable operational task with clear-cut objectives and constraints. In many cases, the delivery activity is focused on relating the data-flow between bought-in applications, and on both reporting and BI. The creation of new business applications is far less crucial to the business.</p>
<p>In this sort of setting, DevOps isn’t essential, but does it represent good practice? The answer must be that the DevOps movement has developed techniques to solve the challenges of rapid delivery, and these techniques have turned out to be generally useful. DevOps practices have become, in many cases, mainstream. Techniques such as continuous deployment have helped a large proportion of the industry.</p>
<p>DevOps, originally known as ‘Agile Infrastructure’, started as a groundswell of frustration at the entrenched segregation and autonomy of the three application-oriented activities within IT: delivery, operations and governance. There was no established methodology that dictated such an ‘iron curtain’. On the contrary, methodologies such as Catalyst had been advocating a more cooperative cross-specialism approach for over 20 years.</p>
<p>None of the development methodologies such as SSADM advocated this silo mentality either. No ‘waterfall’ approach had actually insisted on a Chinese wall between operations and delivery. However, IT practices had become entrenched in a particular way of working. It was a cultural problem rather than a technical one, but the growing need for a more rapid and predictable delivery of change to ecommerce sites brought matters to a head.</p>
<p>DevOps is all about bridging the cultural and technical gap between different teams so that practices such as Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD), which demand a high level of cooperation between teams, become possible.</p>
<p>Done well, DevOps represents a transfer of effective practices and methods between operations and delivery teams, infecting Ops people with some of the best development practices such as source control, versioning and issue-tracking, and automated processes like testing. In turn, operations teams give insights to the delivery teams about concerns such as infrastructure monitoring, immutable architecture, real-time alerts, configuration and integration management, and the requirements underlying high availability, delivery and hosting.</p>
<p>In some cases, it may involve operational people working ’embedded’ within delivery teams, or developers working on operational tasks, but it doesn’t require it. The focus is on the exchange of ideas and expertise. It does not tackle the sometimes conflicting concerns between governance and delivery or operations, nor does it encompass the very earliest stages of planning a database, or the mature system that is no longer being actively developed.</p>
<p>Both delivery and operations have aspects of responsibility that are of little outside interest. Ops teams have a responsibility to maintain many processes, applications and databases that aren’t being developed in-house, or aren’t being actively supported at all. Delivery teams have responsibility for implementation detail that is of no interest to either operations or governance. DevOps is relevant where the interests of delivery and operations meet.</p>
<h1>The difference between DLM and Database DevOps</h1>
<p>How does the DevOps movement, as it applies to databases, differ from Database Lifecycle Management (DLM)? The short answer is that database DevOps focuses on part of the database lifecycle; the intersection between Delivery and Operations. It is, to be frank, a very interesting part, but DevOps for the database doesn’t aim for a broad view of the whole life of a database. Database DevOps is more concerned with enabling good co-operation between Development and Operations to facilitate the rapid delivery of database changes.</p>
<p>DLM, on the other hand, aims to make sure that the development, use and replacement of a database system achieves a measure of quality and scientific method, rather than relying on individual heroics. It encourages teams to evolve their way of working from the chaotic to the managed. It sheds light on all the necessary activities of providing a technical service to users, even those that are of no interest or concern to the vast majority of developers.</p>
<h1>Is DevOps enough?</h1>
<p>DevOps is a key to the effective delivery of an application, and is particularly useful in moving from big intermittent releases to Continuous Delivery.</p>
<p>It makes it easier to introduce version control for all aspects of hosting applications in organizations. It is likely to make applications easier to support and maintain, through making developers aware of operational requirements earlier in development, and by ‘shifting-left’ many of the test, security and compliance chores that were customarily postponed until the deployment pipeline.</p>
<p>However, it really needs to go hand-in-hand with a new spirit of cooperation and culture-sharing with the governance aspect: otherwise, we are in danger of delivering the wrong functionality more quickly and efficiently.</p>
<h1>DevOps and the database</h1>
<p>There was an idea that gained a lot of traction when DevOps was maturing; the database, like the application, was ‘just code’, and should be treated as part of the application. A database, in this way of thinking, is just a slightly weird component of the application that can be coded, built, tested and deployed alongside the application code.</p>
<p>The truth is rather more complex. It is true that a build-script can be generated for everything within a database, and these build scripts can reconstitute the database. This is also case for both the data and metadata, the DML and DDL. However, database developers and DBAs use a number of ways, including Entity-relationship diagramming tools, wizards, or interactive table-design tools, to develop a database, and the code is often generated retrospectively. Each build must bring all the development and test databases in line with the current version, whilst preserving the existing data. Where changes affect base tables in ways that change the data, this requires a migration scripts, or changes to the data import process.</p>
<p>There are also server-settings that either affect the way the database works, such as server configuration, or are part of the database, such as agent jobs or alerts. There are database settings too that can be enshrined in code, such as file locations, that have to be changed for the server it has to run on. In short, it is easier to work in isolation with application development than with database development: the latter is always a team-based activity.</p>
<p>Another problem for businesses grappling with the issue of evolving applications rapidly in the face of competition is that relational databases aren’t amenable to rapid change once they have become established. Relational database practice assumes that the data is well-understood before the database is designed. Changes to the table schema of a complex database can be tricky, not only in the design changes and corresponding changes to every dependent database object, but also in the data migration. Databases don’t easily fit the Agile paradigm, though Agile does acknowledge the need for a good understanding of the business domain before development starts.</p>
<p>Initially, NoSQL offered the tempting hope that, by being ‘schema-less’, one could get all the advantages of relational databases without the pain. Sadly, they had forgotten that RDBMSs provide ACID-based data and transactional integrity, and these qualities couldn’t be fudged by promising ‘eventual consistency’. NoSQL databases were fine for the type of data for which they were developed but were dangerous for transactional operations. Some spectacular Bitcoin Exchange collapses convinced even the NoSQL die-hards that transactionality was required for any commercial activity.</p>
<p>Microservice architectures, developed from the ideas of service-oriented architectures, also offered the hope of avoiding the need for an enterprise-scale RDBMS to manage the transactional integrity of business processes. Such architectures were seen to make even fast-evolving applications dependent on an institutionally-oriented operational culture. Here again, the problems of managing distributed transactions reliably had been grossly underestimated. However, where transactionality isn’t an issue, this architecture can cut down on interdependencies and therefore make development easier.</p>
<p>The most promising solution to this problem of how to accommodate fast-developing applications that need to deploy continuous changes to a changing market, is to understand the nature of the data involved. This makes it possible to use Graph databases, document databases and other specialized database systems for unstructured or semi-structured data, relational databases for transaction processing, and OLAP/Cubes for business intelligence. In other words, a heterogeneous data platform is adopted, rather than a single platform.</p>
<h1>Is there such a thing as a ‘Devops’ tool?</h1>
<p>Before DevOps, there has a temptation in the past for some of the major players in the industry to take the opportunity of a change or initiative in approach to software development to tie users into an all-encompassing solution to the entire application delivery process. The Godzilla IDE. This would include the obvious components such as build servers, source control system, bug tracking, provisioning and so on. Rather than try to integrate existing applications, behemoths were created that solved the problem of integration and communication by not having to communicate at all, as theirs was the only necessary application.</p>
<p>Ordinary people working in IT were even less inclined to buy that dream than senior management. Over the past two decades, software tools have become more specialised and component-oriented. Delivery and Ops people demanded that software had to work together, not only on Windows or Linux, but across platforms. A delivery team and operations team needed to be able to pick and choose from a whole range of specialist tools and had to rely on them working together in a CLI-based ‘toolchain’ that was then able to automate an entire process such as building, testing, packaging, releasing, configuring and monitoring. For network intercommunication, components can expose their services as Representional State Transfer (RESTful) services. The accent is on simplicity and ensuring that tools that support development processes they can, where necessary, conform to the demands of the toolchain. The groundswell of DevOps became concerned with solving problems with tool-chains, often open-source, where each tool, of specialised purpose, could take their input from the previous tool in the chain and pass it on to the next. It meant that tools needed to co-habit, rather than dominate. Microsoft were late into this change in the way of managing processes, but with a fairly clear field and little need for backward-compatibility, were able to introduce a scripting technology that was not only able to provide the toolchain, but to allow objects rather than documents to be passed. Not only was it close to the old Command-line batch scripts, but also took inspiration from Bash scripts. Windows DevOps tools tend to be PowerShell-aware, or even shipped as PowerShell CmdLets, but they can be useful participants with a Command-line Interface (CLI)</p>
<h1>Can a relational database be Agile?</h1>
<p>The short answer is yes, but it requires some compromises in the way that data is accessed from front-end applications. Agile relational database techniques are well-established but rarely practiced.</p>
<p>Rapid deployments need to be as risk-free as possible. By default, a new release exposes the latest functionality to all users immediately. However, if it is possible to preserve the functionality of the original interface intact and expose the new functionality only to a few users whilst allowing immediate rollback, then this risk can usually be reduced to the point that it doesn’t affect the business significantly.</p>
<p>Where the delivery team are working on the deployment alongside the Ops team, it becomes easier to manage an operation that requires a lot of knowledge of the system.</p>
<p>Databases have a particular problem with this approach: the need to be certain of preserving all the changes to data in a controlled delivery. It requires that the database is designed in a particular way to achieve this, and relies on the same discipline in insulating the actual database base tables from the application(s) behind a defined interface at the database level, in much the way you would between application modules. Base tables do not represent a satisfactory interface!</p>
<p>There are some features in the SQL Standard that lend themselves to this type of Agile development such as Feature Toggles and feature routers. Some aspects of SQL Server are especially useful, such as table-valued functions and synonyms. It is perfectly possible to expose different versions of the database to different users whilst keeping the underlying data up-to-date, and to change the version of the database exposed to a particular user merely by changing the users’ windows group.</p>
<p>This sort of release needs a lot of testing, and defensive development. It is best to use feature-switching techniques that can be controlled simply by making changes to user access, so schema-based security is ideal. The downside to this is that schema-based access requires considerable re-engineering of an existing database. Feature-switching via code changes are ill-advised. The worst mistakes come from switching features via global toggle variables, especially if they are recycled.</p>
<h1>Summary</h1>
<p>There has always been a gap between good practice and organization, and the conventional structure of the average IT department. In terms of the lifecycle of the application and database, organizational convention often dictates a strange wall of non-communication, sometimes even non-cooperation between the delivery activity and operations. This has never been sanctified or condoned by any known methodology and gets in the way of delivering updates to an application or database.</p>
<p>To be sure, a delivery team is focused on their project, whereas an operational team has a wide-ranging responsibility for the whole range of current applications, databases and processes, and the way they interact. They are very different perspectives. This means that cooperation and the exchange of ideas and techniques is valuable but the two teams can only merge into a single team in the unusual case where an organization has just one application that requires operational support.</p>
<p>DevOps is an initiative that comes from frustration felt with an organizational system that has evolved in an adaptive way. It stems from individual professional people caught up in the resulting confusion. It makes it easier to introduce many of the techniques that underlie the best DLM practices, especially the delivery pipeline and database provisioning, and it focuses on part of the database lifecycle. It is not concerned with the entire sweep of DLM, and has little to say about governance or the operational support of databases that are no longer being actively developed in-house.</p>
<p>It has, however, been a very positive influence in making it possible to take part of the database lifecycle, the delivery pipeline, and encourage both good practices and new initiatives in reducing the time it takes to deliver change.</p>

<h1>What is Agile?</h1>

<p>Agile is a term used to describe approaches to software development emphasizing incremental delivery, team collaboration, continual planning, and continual learning. The term “Agile” was coined in 2001 in the Agile Manifesto. The manifesto set out to establish principles to guide a better approach to software development. At its core, the manifesto declares 4 value statements representing the foundation of the agile movement. As written, the manifesto states…</p>
<p>We have come to value:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Individuals and interactions over processes and tools</li>
<li>Working software over comprehensive documentation</li>
<li>Customer collaboration over contract negotiation</li>
<li>Responding to change over following a plan</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>This does not imply the items on the right side of these statements arenРІР‚в„ўt important or needed; rather,Р’ items on the left are simply more valued.</p>
<h2>Agile methods and practices</h2>
<p>It’s important to understand that agile is not a “thing” … you don’t “do Agile”. Rather, agile is a mindset. A mindset that drives an approach to software development. There’s not one approach here that works for all situations, rather the term “Agile” has come to represent a variety of methods and practices that align with the value statements in the manifesto.</p>
<p>Agile methods (often called frameworks) are comprehensive approaches to phases of the software development lifecycle –  planning, execution, and delivery. They prescribe a method for accomplishing work, with clear guidance and principles.</p>
<p>Scrum is the most common agile framework (and the one most people start with). Agile practices on the other hand, are techniques applied during phases of the software development lifecycle. Planning Poker for example, is a collaborative estimation practice designed to encourage team members to share their understanding of what “done” means. The process is quite fun, and has proven to help foster teamwork and better estimates. Continuous Integration (also known as CI) is a common agile engineering practice where code changes are integrated into the main branch frequently. An automated build verifies changes, leading to a reduction in integration debt and a continually shippable main branch. These practices (like all agile practices) carry the “Agile” label, because they are consistent with the principles in the agile manifesto.</p>
<h2>What agile isnРІР‚в„ўt</h2>
<p>As agile has gained popularity, many stereotypes and/or misinterpretations have cast a negative shadow regarding its effectiveness. It’s easy to say “<em>Yes, we’re doing Agile</em>”, without any accountability. Considering this, let’s look at a few things that Agile isn’t.</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Agile is not cowboy coding. Agile should not be confused with a “we’ll figure it out as we go” approach to software development. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Agile requires both a Definition of Done and value delivered to customers in every sprint. While Agile values autonomy for individuals and teams; Agile emphasizes aligned autonomy, ensuring the delivery of increased value through increased autonomy.</li>
<li>Agile is not without rigor and planning. On the contrary, Agile methodologies and practices typically emphasize discipline in planning. The key is continual planning throughout the project, not just planning up front.Р’ Continual planningР’ ensures the team can learn from the work theyРІР‚в„ўre executing, thus maximizing planning ROI (return on investment).</li>
</ul>

<li>Agile is not an excuse for the lack of a roadmap. This one has probably done the most harm to the agile movement overall. Organizations and teams following an Agile approach absolutely know where they’re going… and the results they want to achieve. Recognizing change as a part of the process (an agile approach) is different from pivoting in a new direction every week, sprint, or month.</li>
<li>Agile is not development without specifications. It’s necessary in any project to keep your team aligned on “why” and “how” work will happen. An agile approach to specs includes ensuring specs are “right-sized”, and reflect appropriately how the team will sequence and deliver work.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Why agile?</h2>
<p>So why would anyone consider an agile approach? It’s clear the rules of engagement around building software have fundamentally changed in the last 10-15 years. Many of the activities look similar, but the landscape and environments where we apply them are noticeably different. Consider for a moment what it’s like to purchase software today… when compared to the early 2000’s. When was the last time you drove to the store to buy software? Consider how you collect feedback from the customers using your products. How did we understand what people thought about our software before social media? Finally, think about how often you desire to update and improve the software you’re delivering. Delivering updates once a year doesn’t sound like a recipe for winning. Forrester’s Diego Lo Guidice and Dave West said it best in paper titled <em>Transforming Application Delivery</em> (February of 2011).</p>

<p>The rules have changed, and organizations around the world are now adapting their approach to software development accordingly. Agile methods and practices don’t promise to solve every problem. But they do promise to establish a culture and environment where solutions emerge… through collaboration, continual planning and learning, and a desire to ship high quality software more often.</p>

<h1>Run Python test with Azure DevOps pipeline</h1>
<p>The beauty of Azure DevOps is it support to many technologies and all of major language.s I have a simple git repository where I?m experimenting Python code, in that repository I have several directories like 020_xxxx 010_yyy where I?m playing with Python code.</p>
<p>Each folder contains some code and some unit tests written in Pytest, <strong>my goal is creating an Azure Pipeline that can automatically run all pytest for me automatically each time I push some code to the repository.</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>Even if Phyton is a script languages, it has several Unit Testing frameworks that can be used to verify that the code you wrote works as expected</p></blockquote>
<p>Creating a build in Azure DevOps is really simple, just create a build that points to a yaml file in your repository that contains the definition.</p>
<p>This is a real simple yaml buid definition where I?m simply requiring the usage of python 3.x, then install some packages with pip and finally a series of pytest tests run for each folder. As you can see I specified also the trigger to automatically build all branches typical of GitFlow naming convention.</p>
<p><strong>The trick to have the result of the tests published directly in your build result is using a Pytest option to create a result file with JUNIT xml file format</strong>; once you have test result as a JUNIT xml files you can use standard PublishTestResults task to publish results in the build.</p>
<p>After the build completed you can simply looks at the output, if everything is ok the build is Green.</p>

<p><strong>The build will run all python tests in all of my source code folder,</strong> thanks to Pytest that does everything for you, both discovering and run all tests in the folder.</p>
<p>If code does not compile, unit test will fail and you have a failing build.</p>

<p>The problem with this approach is that the build stops at the very first error, so if an error happens in 010 directory my 020 directory will not be tested because at the very first failed test the execution of the build stopped.</p>
<p>This condition is usually too strict, for unit testing it is usually a better approach to configure the build to continue even if run test failed. <strong>To accomplish this, just add <em>continueOnError: true</em> after each bash task used to run tests.</strong> With continueOnError equal to true, the build will continue and if some of the test task fails, the build is marked as Partially Failed, and from the summary you can easily check the run that generates the error.</p>

<p>The reason why I choose to launch a different Pytest run for each folder and upload each result with a different task is to have separate run in build result.</p>

<p>Even if this will force me to add two task for each folder (one for the run and the other for the publish) this approach will give me a different result for each folder so I can immediately understand where is the error.</p>

<p>Hi, <br />I was reading your article (http://www.codewrecks.com/blog/index.ph ... -pipeline/) and tried to implement the yaml-file in my build-pipeline, but it gives me errors: the pipeline run is complaining that the working directory does not exist, which is correct. <p>To avoid creating unnecessary build definition, it is <strong>a best practice to allow for parameter overriding in every task that can be executed from a build</strong>. I?ve dealt on how to parametrize tests to use a different connection string when tests are executed during the build and I?ve used Environment variables for a lot of reasons.</p>
<p>Environment variables are not source controlled, this allows every developer to override settings in own machine without disturbing other developers. If I do not have a MongoDb in my machine I can simply choose to use some other instance in my network.</p>
<p style="clear: both"><img src="http://www.codewrecks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/image_thumb-16.png" /></p>

<p>Noone in the team is affected by this settings, and <strong>everyone has the freedom of changing this value to whatever he/she like</strong>. This is important because you can have different version of MongoDb installed in your network, with various different configuration (MMapV1 or Wired Tiger) and you want the freedom to choose the instance you want to use.</p>
<p>Another interesting aspect of Environment variables, is that <strong>they can be set during a VSTS/TFS build directly from build definition</strong>. This is possible because Variables defined for a build were set as environment variables when the build runs.</p>

<p>If you allow this value to be allowed at Queue Time, you can set the value when you manually queue a build.</p>

<p>If you look at Figure 3, you can verify that I?m able to change the value at queue time, but also, I can simply press ?Add variable? to add any variable, even if it is not included in build definition. In this specific situation I can trigger a build and have my tests run against a specific MongoDb instance.</p>
<p>Remember that the value specified in the build definition <strong>overrides any value that is set on environment variables on build machine.</strong> This imply that, once you set a value in the Build definition, you are not able to change the value for a specific build agent.</p>
<p>It you want to be able to choose a different value for each build agent machine you can simply avoid setting the value on the Variables tab and instead define the variable on each build machine to have a different value for each agent. Another alternate approach is using two Environment variables, Es: TEST_MONGODB and TEST_MONGODB_OVERRIDE, and configure your tests to use TEST_MONGODB_OVERRIDE if present, if not present use TEST_MONGODB. This allows you to use TEST_MONGODB on build definition, but if you set TEST_MONGODB_OVERRIDE for a specific test agent, that agent will use that value.</p>
<p><strong>Another interesting aspect of Environment Variable is that they are included in agent capabilities, as you can see</strong> from Figure 4.</p>

<p>This is an important aspect because if you want that variable to be set in the agent, you can avoid to include in Variables tab, and <strong>you can require this build to be run on an agent that has TEST_MONGODB environment variable specified</strong>.</p>

<p>Setting the demands is not always necessary, in my example if the TEST_MONGODB variable is not definied, tests are executed against local MongDb instance. It is always a good strategy to use a reasonable default if some setting is not present in Environment Variables.</p>

<h1>How to Setup Packer Pipelines With Azure DevOps</h1>

<p>In previous posts, we have covered how to get started using Packer for a VMware environment. We also reviewed how to configure our packer builds to automatically run windows updates so that we have templates that are running the latest and greatest OS patches every time (I cannot tell you how much time this saves on patching). Now, we want to take it a step further. Let?s add what we?ve created into an Azure DevOps pipeline. Here are a few of the many benefits we will get from running our Packer build in a pipeline versus a scheduled task on a server:</p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>Build Success/Failure analytics</strong> ? Azure DevOps provides built-in metrics and reporting on build failures. Every time our build fails we can configure an email notification letting us know this happened. We could do the same in a scheduled task, however, it would require a lot more elbow grease.</li>
<li><strong>Source Code Integration</strong> ? We now get direct integration with our source code to our packer build. Azure DevOps lets us pull the code straight from the repo and execute it. This allows us to make changes and test our packer build configuration with much more speed, especially if we start using Continuous Integration with our pipeline which allows us to deploy our packer config as soon as a change is made to source control.</li>
<li><strong>Agile Packer Build Workflows</strong> ? Integrating our Packer build into a pipeline will elevate us to new levels of automation. We can perform tasks on build failures like create a ticket in our company ticketing system to have an engineer look at it. We can even add another stage after the build is successful where we test building a server with the template and scan it with a vulnerability scanner like OpenVAS, Nessus, or Nexpose. The possibilities of what we could do are endless which is why pipelines are so powerful and widely talked about today.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<h2>Setting Up Azure DevOps On-Prem Agent</h2>
<p>In order for us to be able to run Azure Pipelines on-premises, we will need to build a server or container and install the Azure DevOps Agent on it. This server will allow us to perform tasks on-premises which we will need in order to deploy our packer build for our VMware environment. I have a post that already contains the instructions on how to set this up on a Windows Server, just follow the instructions under the ?Setting up Azure DevOps Agent? section. You will need a Windows Server that is able to ping your VCenter server.</p>
<p>We will also need to install packer, the VSphere-ISO plugin, and the Windows Update provisioner by placing all three executables in a folder. In my example, I place them into C:\Packer. You can find the location to download each one in my previous two Packer posts linked at the beginning of this article:</p>

<h1># Deploying Apostrophe in the Cloud with Heroku</h1>
<p>There are many cloud hosting services, but they all present the same challenges. Separate servers often don't share a single filesystem. The database usually needs its own scalable cloud hosting. And performing tasks like minifying assets is often best done in your development environment, minimizing what has to be done in production.</p>
<blockquote><p>"The cloud" isn't always the easiest solution to your problem. Take a look at our Linode HOWTO for a quicker way that is suitable for all but the highest-traffic sites.</p></blockquote>
<h2># Deploying Apostrophe to Heroku</h2>
<p>is a great starting point for cloud hosting because it is simple to set up, but all of the cloud's challenges come into play. What we learn by deploying to Heroku can be applied equally to Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure and other cloud hosting services.</p>
<p>So for this how-to, we'll stick to free services from Amazon Web Services, Heroku and MongoDB Atlas, a MongoDB cloud hosting service from the creators of MongoDB. But keep in mind you can choose paid plans as well with much higher capacity and performance. Everything we've done here is designed to scale smoothly to those paid offerings.</p>
<h2># Before you begin</h2>
<p>First, build an Apostrophe site! See the getting started tutorial.</p>
<p>Make sure you commit it to a git repository. git is a big part of how Heroku deploys websites.</p>
<h2># First steps with Heroku</h2>
<p>Next, create an account at heroku.com</p>
<p>Then create a Heroku app, choosing any app name and runtime location (US, Europe, etc.) you wish.</p>
<p>Now, following the instructions on the Heroku site, install the Heroku CLI</p>
<p>if you haven't already.</p>
<p>To enable deployment, add Heroku as a "git remote" to which your code can be pushed:</p>
<p>Now we're almost ready to deploy. But, we need a database.</p>
<p>Heroku runs our node app, but it doesn't run MongoDB for us. So let's go to MongoDB Atlas</p>
<p>After you sign up, click "Build a New Cluster." Pick "AWS" as your cloud provider and the same region you chose for Beanstalk. Do not shard your cluster, sharding is not appropriate for CMS work.</p>
<p>We recommend you give your cluster the same name as your project.</p>
<p>You will need to set up an administrative MongoDB user for your cluster. These will be part of your MongoDB database connection credentials. <strong>Be sure to set a secure, separate username and password,</strong> do not use your Atlas login credentials.</p>
<h3># IP address whitelisting</h3>
<p>MongoDB Atlas requires us to whitelist the IP addresses that should be allowed to talk to the database. <strong>Yes, it is secured by an encrypted password,</strong> but this still helps cut down on potential DOS attacks.</p>
<p>This is a problem with Heroku because it may connect from many IP addresses.</p>
<p>If you are buying a larger Atlas plan you may be able to use the "VPC Peering" option, the details of which are beyond the scope of this HOWTO. Otherwise, just click "Allow Access from Anywhere" or, if you don't see that option, use this IP address range:</p>
<h3># Telling Heroku about your database</h3>
<p>You will need to set an environment variable in Heroku so that your dynos understand where the datbase is. There's a UI for this, but the command line is much easier in the long run:</p>
<p>We use the single quotes to avoid problems with most special characters in the URI. If you used the ' character in the URI, you'll need to escape that with \' .</p>
<p>From here, you can test your site locally. This is typically done with:</p>
<p>You should be able to view your website at the designated local port.</p>
<p>You can also test it <em>without</em> Heroku, on your local machine, by setting the environment variable just for one local run of your site:</p>
<p>Press Control-C after you successfully test the site. Startup may take an extra moment because of the remote connection to MongoDB.</p>
<blockquote><p>At a small scale, "the cloud" is always slower than a single-server configuration. When things have to talk to each other, running them farther apart doesn't speed things up. However, after you reach a certain scale, a single server is impractical. And of course a single server is a single point of failure.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>If you do not run node app with the environment variable set correctly, it'll seem to work because it will connect to your own mongodb. You can shut down your local mongodb server temporarily if you want to be really, really sure.</p></blockquote>
<ol>
<li>Your database exists now on MongoDB, but it contains no users, so you won't be able to log in. Let's use the command line to connect again to fix that:</li>
</ol>
<p><em>This is the same user-creation command you saw in our getting-started tutorial.</em> We're just talking to a different database.</p>
<blockquote><p>You could also create your database locally and then copy it to MongoDB using the mongodump and mongorestore commands.</p></blockquote>
<h2># Storing files with Amazon S3</h2>
<p><strong>If you try to deploy now it might seem to work. but don't be fooled!</strong> If you upload images, and then redeploy later, or even just wait a day or so. forget it. They are gone forever. That's because, with Heroku, local files are "written on water." What's more, on any given page load you might not even hit the same dyno where the files were uploaded. And similar issues will break your static assets, like CSS and JS.</p>
<p>So we need to use Amazon S3 for persistent storage of both uploads and static assets.</p>
<p>. Create an account if you haven't already. <em>You may have to provide a credit card but as of this writing, you can complete this how-to using their free service tier.</em></p>
<p>From the Amazon Web Services control panel, click on S3. Then click "Create Bucket."</p>
<p>Choose a bucket name (the same as your app is nice but not mandatory) and a region (we recommend you not use "US Standard" because it does not have read-after-write semantics). Then click "Create."</p>
<p>Now test it <em>without</em> Heroku, on your local machine, by setting the environment variables just for one run of your site (the trailing \ characters are there to allow us to break one command line over multiple lines for readability in the bash shell):</p>
<p><strong>Regarding the APOS_S3_REGION setting:</strong> you'll need to look this up in the AWS regions table</p>
<p>(it's halfway down the page, "Amazon API Gateway"). Use the value in the "Region" column corresponding to the "Region Name" you chose.</p>
<p>Upload an image to your site, then right-click it and inspect the image URL. It should be on an Amazon S3 server at this point, <strong>not localhost</strong>.</p>
<blockquote><p>"What if I want to use an S3-compatible service that isn't run by Amazon?" You can set the APOS_S3_ENDPOINT variable to a complete hostname. If you do, you should <em>not</em> set APOS_S3_REGION .</p></blockquote>
<h3># Adding the S3 variables to Heroku</h3>
<p>Just use heroku config:set again:</p>
<h2># Minifying assets</h2>
<p>The site can work with Heroku at this point, but <em>performance will be poor because CSS and JavaScript files are not "minified"</em> (combined to save space). We need to generate minified files in our dev environment in such a way that Heroku can access them after deployment.</p>
<p>Apostrophe generates minified files with the apostrophe:generation task. For simple single-server deployments we usually just run apostrophe:generation in production, but this doesn't work for Heroku because every "dyno" in Heroku gets its own, temporary local files and we want every dyno to see copies of the same exact assets. You'll encounter the same issue with most other cloud hosting services.</p>
<p>So we'll build an "asset bundle" and store it temporarily in the database, where all dynos will be able to see it.</p>
<p>To do that, first, <strong>you must set APOS_BUNDLE=1</strong> in your Heroku environment settings:</p>
<p>And, you need to turn on minification of assets:</p>
<blockquote><p>IMPORTANT: the APOS_MINIFY environment variable is OVERRIDDEN by any setting you may have made for the minify option when configuring the apostrophe-assets module. If you want to use the environment variable, DO NOT also set the option in your code.</p></blockquote>
<p>Third, you must create a <strong>release tasks script</strong> in your project, and a <strong>Heroku Procfile</strong> telling Heroku to run it.</p>
<p>Here is a sample Procfile , which should be in the home directory of your project:</p>
<p>And in the ./scripts subdirectory of your project, here is a sample heroku-release-tasks script:</p>
<p>Be sure to make that script executable before committing it in your project:</p>
<p>This script will take care of <em>both</em> static asset generation and database migrations just before Heroku starts launching dynos with the latest version of your code.</p>
<p>With these things in place, Apostrophe will minify assets and copy them to its database just before it launches dynos. Each dyno will be able to see the asset bundle and copy its contents to its temporary filesystem, so everyone sees the same files.</p>
<blockquote><p>"Why does Apostrophe need to unpack assets each time a dyno starts up?" Remember, every dyno in Heroku gets its own completely temporary and separate set of local files. Heroku deploys from git, but we don't want to use minified files all the time in dev. In dev we also benefit from using live symbolic links to the asset folders of modules; but in production we want copies, for speed. The bundle strategy lets us keep the production assets in git without actually cluttering up the dev environment.</p></blockquote>
<p>We're ready to deploy to Heroku!</p>
<h2># Deploying to Heroku</h2>
<p>Everything is in readiness! <strong>Commit your code changes,</strong> then type:</p>
<p>To push your latest code from your active git branch up to heroku. Heroku will then start installing your dependencies via npm install , and you'll see the progress right in the output of the git push heroku command.</p>
<p>At the end you'll see a message like this:</p>
<h2># If it doesn't work</h2>
<p><strong>If your deployment fails,</strong> type heroku logs to see what went wrong.</p>
<p><strong>If your images don't "stick" between restarts,</strong> you probably skipped the Amazon S3 steps.</p>
<p><strong>If you get no CSS and JavaScript</strong>, you probably configured the APOS_MINIFY and APOS_BUNDLE variables but never created the Procfile or the release tasks script. Also check the heroku logs for errors from the release tasks script.</p>
<h3># Fonts, other assets, and CORS errors in the browser console</h3>
<p>To ensure there are no CORS (Cross-Origin Resource) errors, visit your amazon S3 bucket settings to adjust the CORS configuration:</p>

<p>Verify the value of AllowedOrigin . It should match the heroku url and/or the production URL of your project:</p>
<h2># Efficient asset delivery</h2>
<p>In this setup, images are delivered efficiently via S3, and everyone can see all of the assets. And so are static assets like CSS and JS. Those are copied to S3 during the release task. Old assets are cleaned up one hour after each new deployment, allowing a very generous period of time for any old Heroku dynos to shut down automatically.</p>

<p><strong><em>In this article we will move ahead and will discuss how to create Personal Access Token</em></strong> (PAT). We need PATs for authenticating Azure DevOps. In one of the upcoming article we need to discuss ? calling REST APIs programmatically where we need Personal Access Token for authenticating DevOps.</p>

<p><strong>What is Personal Access Token (PAT)</strong> :</p>

<li>Personal Access Token (PAT) is <strong>mechanism to authenticate Azure DevOps</strong></li>
<li>PAT is the <strong>alternative for using Password to authenticate Azure DevOps</strong></li>
<li>We will generate <strong>PAT for accessing specific resource (scope) like WorkItems, builds, activities and so on</strong></li>
<li><strong>PATs are used for accessing REST APIs</strong></li>

<p><strong>When to use Personal Access Token (PAT) to authenticate Azure DevOps / Scenario where PATs can be used for authentication</strong> :</p>
<p><ul>
<li>When we need to call Azure DevOps REST APIs programmatically</li>
<li>If sometime we works with third party tools which don?t support Microsoft or Azure AD account, and we don?t want to share our credentials with this third party software then we have an option of using PATs</li>
<li>For smaller projects again PAT is the robust solution</li>

<p> <strong>Creating a PAT</strong> :</p>

<li>To create PAT we need to navigate to tokens page ? <strong>https://dev.azure.com/ /_usersSettings/tokens</strong>, here we have <em>https://dev.azure.com/prashamsabadra/_usersSettings/tokens</em></li>
<li>We will navigate to tokens page by going to <strong><em>User Settings >> Personal access tokens</em></strong> as shown in below Fig :</li>

<li>We will be navigated to Personal Access Tokens home page ? <strong>https://dev.azure.com/ /_usersSettings/tokens</strong>, following figure shows the home page of Personal Access Tokens home page</li>

<li>On the PAT home page we have an <strong>option to create new token</strong> as shown in below Fig</li>

<li>We have various options on ?<strong>Create a new personal access token</strong>? such as <ul>
<li>Name of token</li>
<li>Expiration (UTC)</li>
<li>Scopes</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Expiration</strong> (UTC) : defines the <strong>lifespan of PAT</strong><ul>
<li>We have 4 options for Expiration (UTC) as shown in below Fig</li>
<li>In last option ?<strong>Custom defined</strong>?, we can specify expiration date till 1 year.</li>
<li><strong>We can not set expiration for PAT beyond 1 year</strong></li>

<h1>How to connect TFS in Visual Studio code</h1>
<p>I'm new to VS code. So far it seems very nice and much lighter than VS. How could I connect my existing TFS server to VS code (my TFS must stay on premises - company requirements). I read that this can be done but so far I've seen only examples for Git or TFVC.</p>
<h2>3 Answers 3</h2>
<p>Just as Daniel said " Git and TFVC are the two source control options in TFS ". Fortunately both are supported for now in VS Code.</p>
<p>You need to install the Azure Repos Extension for <strong>Visual Studio Code</strong>. The process of installing is pretty straight forward.</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Search for <strong>Azure Repos</strong> in VS Code and select to install the one by Microsoft</li>
<li>Open <strong>File</strong> -><strong>Preferences</strong> -><strong>Settings</strong></ol></p>
<p>Add the following lines to your <strong>user settings</strong></p>
<p>If you have VS 2015 installed on your machine, your path to Team Foundation tool (tf.exe) may look like this:</p>
<p>Open a local folder (repository), From <strong>View</strong> -> <strong>Command Pallette</strong> . type <strong>team signin</strong></p>
<p>Provide <strong>user name</strong> --> <strong>Enter</strong> --> Provide <strong>password</strong> to connect to TFS.</p>

<p>Note that Server Workspaces are not supported:</p>

<p>I know I'm a little late to the party, but I did want to throw some interjections. (I would have commented but not enough reputation points yet, so, here's a full answer).</p>
<p>This requires the latest version of VS Code, Azure Repo Extention, and Git to be installed.</p>
<p>Anyone looking to use the new VS Code (or using the preview like myself), when you go to the Settings (Still File -> Preferences -> Settings or CTRL+, ) you'll be looking under User Settings -> Extensions -> Azure Repos.</p>

<p>Then under Tfvc: <strong>Location</strong> you can paste the location of the executable.</p>

<p>After adding the location, I closed my VS Code (not sure if this was needed) and went my git repo to copy the git URL.</p>

<p>After that, went back into VS Code went to the Command Palette (View -> Command Palette or CTRL+Shift+P) typed Git: Clone pasted my repo:</p>

<p>Selected the location for the repo to be stored. Next was an error that popped up. I proceeded to follow this video which walked me through clicking on the Team button with the exclamation mark on the bottom of your VS Code Screen</p>

<p>Then chose the new method of authentication</p>

<p>Copy by using CTRL+C and then press enter. Your browser will launch a page where you'll enter the code you copied (CTRL+V).</p>
