Configure Laravel properly for CI/CD

Just a quick note before: if you are afraid to step into some unknown world, just remember what iIsay — you can never know how easy it can be for you to adapt to it and how much joy you can get from it.

The most struggle I had with for a long long time was setting up CI/CD properly for Laravel, and I’m not joking. For the newcomers, there are so many barriers that you must get over to reach the fruit of automation that you have to google every single problem you encounter until you ran into a GitHub issue which is closed with an “nvm, fixed it”.

I am going to teach you about CI/CD, how to properly set up CI/CD for your Laravel projects and how to perform good unit tests and, as a bonus: how to configure the CI/CD to allow browser tests with Laravel Dusk!

CI/CD the short way

So, at the very beginning of the programming, people were just passing around archived zip files with the source code from dev to dev and it was a total mess until Git came along and fixed the source control ideology. This happened with CI/CD. In the beginning, people were manually testing their code without having any idea if something is broken (because I can tell you — if you don’t have tests, your app might be broken somewhere). So automated tests came along and eased the work of manually testing — you just tell a virtual machine in the cloud (in newer versions there are Docker containers spin up in a Kubernetes cluster) to start a pipeline (a set of steps): run PHP, Ruby or whatever and do a precise list of commands, like running a MySQL instance and seeding it with fake data for testing, and mark the tests as passed if there are no commands that return a non-zero exit code (I’m going to tell you about this soon).

CI/CD is an acronym for Continous Integration and Continous Deployment. Basically, you write code, the code gets on a VM in the cloud and with that precise list of commands, you either get a result that your code is good or bad, and it jumps in the second step (CD) which gets on the server (gets deployed) without your users even noticing it (or they can notice if you opt-in for non-zero downtime deployments).

So, in the shell, any kind of command which returns a non-zero exit code is treated as good. Otherwise, it might fail the build or might be a risky build. For example, this command returns a zero exit code:

This returns a non-zero exit code (because in this case, my-inexistent-cli is a non-existent command):

Setting up CI/CD in Laravel

So, Laravel has a built-in, clean way, to write tests using PHPUnit or Dusk, but there’s a lack of the means of setting up a configuration for this thing. I’ll tell you how to properly set up CI/CD for two major providers: GitlabCI, CircleCI. I had to give up on TravisCI since it’s good for Open Source, like Laravel packages, but it does not seem to suite the second part, the Continous Deployment part well.

Gitlab CI

If you plan to use this for your private projects, 2k build minutes are enough for, let’s say, a maximum of two people per project? You can run around 400 builds (with 5 mins each) each month for free. What I have noticed is that it is slow, especially when running the script to install Chromium for Dusk Tests. I will give you two versions, one with PHPUnit and one with both PHPUnit and Dusk, just so you can make an idea.

Some people will complain: “ehhhh, you could have used a version of PHP which comes with Apache” but seriously — as long as Laravel has a built-in method of staring a web server, there’s no need of additional seconds to my build, also, it can be done properly in Dusk due to built-in nature.

This should stay in your .gitlab-ci.yml inside your root project. Next time you’ll push your app to the branch, check the CI/CD from the left menu in your repository. A new pipeline should start.

So, Gitlab CI relies on containers, so in case you want MySQL instead of MariaDB, feel free to change it to mysql:[your_version] , for example: mysql:5.7 . Also, if you don’t compile assets with npm , it’s useless to install and run prod .

Also, I use Ed Bizarro’s Gitlab Pipeline images for testing — feel free to change the PHP version to something appropriate.

For this test, this kind of .env.testing is needed to make it run:

So, for tests with Dusk we need some more settings:

For this, an extra env.dusk.testing is required:

CircleCI

CircleCI offers 1k minutes for your testing and deployment joy. It proved to be fast — compared to Gitlab CI; it cut off one whole minute (from 3 mins to 2 mins, with the same basic build) since they run on optimized CPUs.

For CircleCI I use the same configuration of .env files, but a different configuration. This time, you’ll have a folder called .circleci , and inside should be a config.yml :

This configuration relies on restoring the cache before running composer update or npm update and saving the node_modules and vendor folders into the cache for later use.

Service containers

So, as I told you from the beginning, you can start a CI/CD pipeline in small steps, with an env file and a YAML file. You just declare commands, that can either run in the background or separately, like service containers.

Service containers are declared in your config and allow you to set up basic things, like Redis, MySQL or MongoDB. All of these are based on Docker containers. You can search for containers for your services on Docker Hub. For example, you can find an image for MongoDB and use it in your pipeline:

This is how it would look like in the Gitlab CI configuration:

You can open up containers with services and set them up environment variables. Make sure that you access them using the image name as the host. For example, the mariadb container won’t be accessed with 127.0.0.1 , but with the string mariadb . Make sure that when you set this in your env file, it is this way.

A thing to notice is that I did not set up a container for Redis because in tests you want to receive a response in sync, so you can test them from one end to another in a perfect flowing way — imagine how it would be if you would start a job, and it won’t process completely when your tests would start asserting some model that should have been written in the database — for this kind of tests, use the Mocking feature.

From the Azure DevOps Services CLI

You can now manage your pull requests and other resources from the command line with azure-devops. Azure Repos and Azure DevOps Server, formerly Team Foundation Server 2017 Update 2 or later, support pull requests by using the command line.

For a list of commands to create and manage pull requests, see Manage pull requests.

For more information about working with the Azure DevOps Services CLI, see Get started with CLI.

Draft pull requests

Draft pull requests were added in the Azure DevOps Server 2019.1 update.

Sometimes you may want to create a pull request but you aren't ready to send it to the entire team for review. A draft pull request indicates that a pull request is a work in progress. You don't have to resort to title prefixes such as WIP or DO NOT MERGE. When the pull request is ready for review, you can publish it, and begin or resume the full review process.

Draft pull request differences

Draft pull requests have the following differences from published pull requests:

Build validation policies are enabled but not run automatically. They can be manually queued by selecting the . menu beside the build in the pull request.

Voting is disabled while in draft mode.

Required reviewers aren't automatically added.

Notifications are sent while in draft mode, but only to reviewers that you explicitly add to the draft pull request.

Draft pull requests are displayed in the pull requests list with a special badge.

Create a draft pull request

To create a draft pull request, choose Create as draft when creating the pull request.

If you start your pull request title with WIP, Create as draft is selected as the default.

Publish a draft pull request

When you're ready to have the pull request reviewed and completed, you can publish it.

When you publish a pull request, required reviewers are assigned and notified, policies are evaluated, and voting begins.

Mark as draft

To mark an active pull request as a draft, choose Mark as draft. Marking a pull request as draft resets all votes. If your pull request has any votes, you'll be asked to confirm.

Add detail to your pull request

Link work items and describe the changes in the branch to make it easier for others to see what problem your changes solve. Change the pull request title, add a detailed description, add reviewers, link work items, and make comments to explain your changes. When you're ready to create the pull request and have your changes reviewed, select Create.

Don't worry if you don't have all of the work items, reviewers, or details ready when you create your pull request. You can add them now when you create the pull request. You can also add or update all of these items after you create the pull request.

Help reviewers using pull request labels

Sometimes it's important to communicate extra information about a pull request to the reviewers. Maybe the pull request is still a work in progress, or it's a hotfix for an upcoming release. You can append some extra text in the title, perhaps a "[WIP]" prefix or "DO NOT MERGE". Labels now provide a way to tag pull requests with extra information. Use tags to communicate important details and help organize pull requests.

To add a label when creating a pull request, choose Add label. After you create a pull request, you can manage its labels in the Labels section.

In a future release, we'll make labels even more useful by making it easier to filter pull requests using labels.

Add and remove reviewers

Add reviewers to your pull request:

Keep these fields up to date so reviewers know what the changes in the pull request are trying to accomplish.

Review a pull request

The Overview tab shows the current state of the pull request at a glance. Review the title, description, and discussion to understand proposed changes and see issues brought up by other reviewers.

Starting with Visual Studio 2017 Update 6, you can check out the source branch from a pull request directly from Pull Requests in Team Explorer. Right-click the pull request and choose Checkout Source Branch.

Browse code changes

Select Files to view the changes made to the source branch next to the target branch of the pull request.

When viewing the difference for a single selected file, there is a size limit of 5 MB for the file. To view and diff files larger than 5 MB, you can download the file and view it using a local diff tool. When viewing the difference for a collection of files in the Files view, the size limit for each file is 0.5 MB for performance reasons.

Review previous versions of the code from the All updates drop-down list. Every time Azure Repos updates the branch, it adds a new version to the list and on the Updates tab.

The diff view updates as you select different changes. It shows the differences between the files in the selected and previous version in the pull request. Catch up with a pull request after being away from it by stepping through changes made since your last review.

Browse a list of changes from the author using Updates.

You can select and view changes made in commits on the branch in Commits.

Leave comments

Add comments to the pull request to make suggestions, reply to previous comments, and point out problems with the proposed changes. Comment inline in the Files tab in your pull request by selecting the comment button. Leave feedback not tied to a specific code change by commenting in Overview. Reply directly to the author or other reviewers by using @username and reference work items using #workitemID in your comments. You can also reference other pull requests using !pullrequestID .

Update comment status to let reviewers know what you are doing to address the concerns brought up in their review. New comments start in Active status. Select Resolve or Reply & resolve to update comments in the conversation.

Additional options are available in the comment resolution drop-down list.

Active: Comment is still under review.

Pending: The issue in this comment will be addressed, but isn't fixed yet.

Resolved: The issue brought up in this comment has been fixed.

Won't Fix: The suggestion in the comment is noted, but won't make changes in this pull request to address it.

Closed: Discussion for this comment is closed.

Vote on the changes

Use the button at the upper right to vote on the changes in a pull request. The default option is Approve, but you can select other options from the drop-down list:

Approve: Agree with the proposed changes in the pull request as-is.

Approve with suggestions: Agree with the pull request, but provide optional suggestions to improve the code.

Wait for author: Don't approve the changes, and ask the author to review your comments. The author should let you know to review the code again after they address your concerns.

Reject: The changes aren't acceptable. If you vote this way, leave a comment in the pull request to explain why.

Reset feedback: Choose Reset feedback to remove your vote.

The number of required approvals in a pull request can be set from the branch policy for the branch. A pull request that meets the required number of approvals can be completed. Even if other reviewers reject the changes, the pull request is completed.

When you configure the Require a minimum number of reviewers branch policy, select Reset code reviewer votes when there are new changes to reset votes when you push new changes.

Best practice: At least two reviewers should review and approve the changes in a significant pull request.

Update code in response to feedback

Update your code in response to comments. Then create a new commit with the changes and push the updates to the branch in your Git repo. You can make quick updates to your branch directly from the Files tab in Code on the web.

Change the target branch of a pull request

For most teams, nearly all pull requests target the same branch, such as master or develop . You may need to target a different branch, but it's easy to forget to change the target branch from the default. To change the target branch of an active pull request, see Change the target branch of a pull request.

Complete the pull request

Select Complete in the upper right of the pull request view to complete your pull request after the reviewers approve of the changes.

Complete: Complete the pull request now and merge the changes to the target branch.

Set auto-complete: If you have branch policies, you can choose Set auto-complete to configure the pull request to close once it meets all branch policies.

Abandon: Close the pull request without merging the changes.

In Complete pull request, enter the message for the merge commit and update the pull request description.

Select any of the following options:

Complete linked work items after merging to complete any linked work items.

Delete
after merging to delete the source branch from the pull request.

Squash changes when merging to squash merge your pull request.

Override branch policies and enable merge to force a branch to merge even if it doesn't satisfy all branch policies. This option is only available if you have Exempt from policy enforcement permissions.

Select Complete merge.

Linked work items are also updated showing the pull request completion.

Complete automatically

Select Set auto-complete from the Complete drop-down list to complete the pull request and merge the changes as soon as it meets all branch policies. When the conditions satisfy branch policies, the pull request is completed. You receive an email notification. If there's a conflict or an error completing the pull request, email notifies you of the issue.

Once you set auto-complete, the pull request displays a banner. Select Cancel auto-complete to turn off auto-complete and return the pull request to an active state. Starting with TFS 2018 Update 2, the banner displays the outstanding list of policy criteria.

The Auto-complete option is available in Azure Repos and TFS 2017 and higher. It is only present when you have branch policies that must be satisfied. If you don't see Auto-complete, you don't have any branch policies. For more information, see Branch policies.

Abandon your changes

Select Abandon from the drop-down on the Complete button to abandon your changes. You can still view the abandoned pull request. It stays linked to work items.

Reactivate an abandoned pull request at any time. Select the pull request from the Abandoned tab in the Pull Request view.

Receiving notification of pull request updates

Subscribe to email alerts to get notified for changes to your pull requests.

By default, you are subscribed to several common pull request notifications. For a complete list of default notification subscriptions, see Out-of-the-box (OOB) or default subscriptions

Go to your project and select Project settings > Notifications to view your notification settings.

Choose New subscription to subscribe to additional notifications.

To edit a notification, select . for the notification and choose View to edit the subscription.

To opt-out of a notification, set the State to Off.

Select the settings button while you have your project open to bring up the project administration page.

Select the Notifications tab to view your notification settings, and choose New subscription to subscribe to additional notifications.

To edit a notification, select . for the notification and choose View to edit the subscription.

To opt-out of a notification, set the State to Off.

Revert a pull request

To undo the changes in a pull request, follow these steps:

Open the completed pull request and select Revert. When you revert a pull request in this way, you create a new branch with changes that undo the pull request for an existing target branch in your repo.

In Target branch, select the branch where you want to undo the pull request changes.

In Topic branch name, select a new branch where the reverted changes are created, then select Revert.

Select Create pull request to merge the newly created branch in a second pull request to complete the revert.

The branch created during this revert has a single commit that reverts the file changes in the pull request. The branch doesn't contain a reverted commit for each of the commits merged in the original pull request.

Cherry-pick a pull request

To copy changes made in a pull request to another branch in your repo, follow these steps:

In a completed pull request, select Cherry-pick, or for an active pull request, select Cherry-pick from the . menu. Cherry-picking a pull request in this way creates a new branch with the copied changes. Merge into a target branch in a second pull request.

In Target branch, enter the branch you want to merge the copied changes.

In Topic branch name, enter a new branch to contain the copied changes, then select Cherry-pick.

Select Create pull request to merge the topic branch into the target branch to complete the cherry-pick.

Set a new default branch

This step requires Edit Policies permissions on your Git repo.

Configure your Git repo to use a different default branch to merge code into when your team creates new pull requests. You can use a branch other than master for new changes or change your main line of development in your repo.

Navigate to your repository and select Branches.

Select the desired new default branch. You need at least two branches in order to change the default. If there's only one, it will already be the default branch. In that case, you must create a second one in order to change the default.

Select the . beside the desired branch and choose Set as default branch.

Once you've set the new default branch, you may delete the previous one if desired.

Select the settings button in your project open to open the project administration page.

Select Version Control.

Select your Git repository. Your branches are displayed under your repo.

Select the . next to the branch you want to set as default, then select Set as default branch.

Once you've set the new default branch, you may delete the previous one if desired.

There are other aspects you should consider before making this change. Learn about them in the topic on changing your default branch.

Эдуард Кабринский - Azure pipelines self hosted - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure pipelines self hosted

[youtube]

Azure pipelines self hosted Breaking news english Azure pipelines self hosted

Clean builds with self-hosted Azure Pipelines and GitHub Actions

posted on Jun 22, 2020

NOTE: I will reference Azure Pipelines going forward, but this applies to GitHub Actions as well, unless specifically stated otherwise.

The problem

Running builds on Microsoft-hosted Azure Pipelines is very reproducible because every build get's a pristine environment in a disposable VM.

When creating a self-hosted VM, there is no guidance on having this behavior preserved. The docs instead guide you through installing the agent on an existing/mutable operating system.

The solution

What we need to do is something like this:

Create a disposable environment.

Start the agent in the environment.

Process exactly one job.

Stop the agent.

Dispose of the environment.

Loop back to step 1

Disposable environments.

There are multiple methods to create disposable environments.

Docker

Pros:

Simple to create image.

Quick environment create/destroy.

Cons:

Docker-in-Docker is tough.

You can mount the Docker socket into your container, but you introduce shared state between builds.

Mounting paths are problematic when using Docker-in-Docker.

Packer/Vagrant

Pros:

Better isolation of builds.

Using Docker in your builds is idiomatic.

Cons:

A new tool to learn (at least in my case), Packer.

Microsoft has shared their scripts for provisioning their Microsoft-hosted agents, but work is needed to support anything that isn't run in Azure (qemu, VMWare, etc).

Docker was suitable for my case, so that is what I'll focus on.

The implementation

When running the self-hosted agent locally, there is a hidden gem available, the --once flag.

This flag will configure the agent to listen for exactly one job, process it, and shutdown immediately.

So now, let's get our agent configured to run in a Docker container. Luckily, the Microsoft docs have this covered here. BUT, there are some slight modifications we must make to allow us to utilize the --once flag.

When you have successfully files mentioned above setup locally and patched, let's build our image.

Now we can startup the image to process exactly one build.

Ok, great, now how do I configure this to run in a loop?

/etc/default/dockeragent.service

/lib/systemd/system/dockeragent.service

Once these files are in place, enable the systemd unit.

Now your builds will start on boot and run over and over in a pristine/clean environment!

This process is similar to GitHub Actions because their runner is a fork of the Azure runner. They support running in a Docker agent with the --once flag.

Microsoft today announced Azure DevOps, the successor of Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS, formerly Visual Studio Online) and Azure DevOps Server, the successor of Team Foundation Server (TFS). The included services ?span the breadth of the development lifecycle to help developers ship software faster and with higher quality,? the company promises.

The rebranding is not exactly a surprise, given that VSTS is essentially a cloud service backed by Microsoft Azure. Each Azure DevOps service is open and extensible, designed to work with any type of application, regardless of the framework, platform, or cloud. Azure DevOps supports both public and private cloud configurations.

As for pricing, Azure DevOps is free for open source projects and small projects (up to five users). For larger teams, the cost ranges from $30 per month (10 users) to $6,150 per month (1,000 users).

Above: A developer using all Azure DevOps services together from the vantage point of Azure Boards.

Azure DevOps includes:

Azure Pipelines: CI/CD that works with any language, platform, and cloud. Connect to GitHub or any Git repository and deploy continuously. Azure Pipelines is also now available in the GitHub Marketplace.

Azure Boards: Powerful work tracking with Kanban boards, backlogs, team dashboards, and custom reporting.

Azure Artifacts: Maven, npm, and NuGet package feeds from public and private sources.

Azure Repos: Unlimited cloud-hosted private Git repos for your project. Collaborative pull requests, advanced file management, and more.

Azure Test Plans: All in one planned and exploratory testing solution.

It?s worth noting that Azure Pipelines offers free CI/CD with unlimited minutes and 10 parallel jobs for every open source project. Many of the top open source projects are already using Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, including Atom, Cpython, Pipenv, Tox, Visual Studio Code, and TypeScript.

Above: Azure Pipelines used independently to build a GitHub repo.

Microsoft says its ?millions? of VSTS users will be upgraded into Azure DevOps projects automatically, and promises they will not lose any functionally. Instead, VSTS will gain more choice and control since Azure DevOps services ?work great together.? That said, URLs will be changed from abc.visualstudio.com to dev.azure.com/abc, and redirects from visualstudio.com URLs will be supported to avoid broken links.

VSTS users will also receive an updated user experience, which Microsoft will continue to iterate on based on feedback from the preview. New users will get the update today, and it will be enabled by default for existing users ?in the coming months.?

Users of TFS, the on-premises counterpart of VSTS, will continue to receive updates based on features live in Azure DevOps. Starting with the next version of TFS, the product will be called Azure DevOps Server and will receive the normal cadence of updates (new features have typically been added to VSTS first and then migrated to the on-premises TFS version as updates at approximately three-month intervals).

In Azure DevOps Pipeline (the web based build system) you can call GitVersion either using the Command Line build step or install an extension / custom build step. The custom build step requires a one-time setup to import the GitVersion task into your TFS or Azure DevOps Pipeline instance.

Executing GitVersion

Using GitVersion with the MSBuild Task NuGet Package

Add the GitVersionTask NuGet package to your projects.

See MSBuild Task for further instructions how to use the MS Build Task.

Using GitVersion with the Command Line build step

Make sure to have GitVersion.exe under version control. There exists also a Chocolatey package for installing GitVersion.exe on build agents.

Add a Command Line build step to your build definition. You'll probably want to drag the task to be at or near the top to ensure it executes before your other build steps.

Set the Tool parameter to

\GitVersion.exe .

Set the Arguments parameter to /output buildserver /nofetch .

If you want the GitVersionTask to update AssemblyInfo files add updateAssemblyInfo true to the Arguments parameter.

If you want to update the build number you need to send a logging command to TFS.

Using the custom GitVersion build step

Installing

Installing the extension

For Visual Studio Team Service or TFS 2015 Update 2 or higher it is recommended to install the GitVersion extension:

Manually installing/updating the custom build step

If you run TFS 2015 RTM or Update 1 or don't want to install the GitVersion extension you can install the build task manually:

Install the tfx command line tool as shown here.

For TFS 2015 On-Prem configure Basic Authentication in TFS as shown here.

Download the GitVersion TFS build task from the latest release on the GitVersion releases page and unzip.

Run tfx login as shown here.

From the directory outside of where you unzipped the task, run tfx build tasks upload --task-path .\GitVersionVsixTask --overwrite where GitVersionVsixTask is the directory containing the files.

It should successfully install.

Using the GitVersion custom build step

From a TFS build definition, select "Add a Step" and then in the Build category, choose GitVersion and click Add. You'll probably want to drag the task to be at or near the top to ensure it executes before your other build steps.

If you want the GitVersionTask to update AssemblyInfo files, check the box in the task configuration. For advanced usage, you can pass additional options to the GitVersion exe in the Additional arguments section.

The Azure DevOps Pipeline build step can update your build number with GitVersion variables. See below for details.

Using Pipelines yaml

Add the following yaml task and variable to your azure-pipelines.yml file:

You can now use the GitVersion.SemVer environment variable in any subsequent tasks to refer to the semantic version number for your build. For example, you can build your dotnet core application with a semantic version number like so:

Running inside TFS

Using the GitVersion Variables

GitVersion passes variables in the form of GitVersion.* (Eg: GitVersion.Major ) to TFS Build and also writes GITVERSION.* (Eg: GITVERSION.MAJOR ) environment variables that are available for any subsequent build step.

To use these variables you can just refer to them using the standard variable syntax. For instance $(GitVersion.NuGetVersion) in your nuget pack task to set the version number. Since update 1 there are no known limitations.

See Variables for an overview of available variables.

Using GitVersion variables in build name

To use GitVersion's variables in the build name, just add them in the form $(GITVERSION_FullSemVer) into the Build definition's build number string. Then just ensure GitVersion is called with /output buildserver and it will replace those variables with the calculated version. The TFS GitVersion Build Step (above) handles this too, so if you're already using that, there's nothing extra to configure.

If GitVersion does not find any substitutions it will just default to using FullSemVer

If you currently use $(rev:.r) in your build number, that won't work correctly if you use GitVersion variables as well due to the delayed expansion of the GitVersion vars. Instead, you might be able to use $(GitVersion_BuildMetaData) to achieve a similar result. See Variables for more info on the variables. .
