<h1>Implement Azure Infra using Terraform and Pipelines</h1>
<p>Continuous integration and delivery is part of DevOps processes, and currently part of most software projects. In my previous blog post, I had a review of the problem and why infrastructure as code (IaC) matters. The analysis included the architecture diagram and the Azure components. In this blog post as the continuation, you can read and learn how to Implement Azure Infra using Terraform and Pipelines to be part of your CI/CD in Azure DevOps. This blog post includes a complete technical guide.</p>
<h2>Terraform</h2>
<p>Terraform is Infrastructure as code to manage and develop cloud components. The tool is not only for specific cloud ecosystem; therefore, it is popular among developer working in different ecosystems. Terraform uses various providers, and in Microsoft cloud case, it uses Azure provisioner (azurerm) to create, modify and delete Azure resources. As explained in the previous blog post, you need the Terraform CLI installed on the environment and Azure account to deploy your resources. To verify the installation, you can write “terraform –version” in the shell terminal to view the installed version of the CLI.</p>
<p>Terraform uses declarative state model. The developer writes the desired state of wanted infrastructure and Terraform will take care of the rest to achieve the results. The workspace consists of one or many .terraform files. The folder on the environment also includes hidden settings and plugins files. The basic Azure provider block with subscription and resource block selection looks like this in main.tf file.</p>
<p>The provider needs to authenticate to Azure before being able to provision the infrastructure. At the moment there is four authentication models:</p>
<h2>Azure DevOps Pipelines Structure</h2>
<p>The pipeline definition is defined in the YAML file, which includes one or many stages of the CI/CD process. It’s worth mentioning that currently, Azure pipelines do not support all YAML features. This blog post is not about the YAML and to read more please refer to “Learn YAML in Y minutes“. In the structure of the YAML build file, the stage is the top level of a specific process and includes one or many Jobs with again has one or many jobs. Here is an example of the pipeline structure:</p>
<h2>Terraform + Azure DevOps Pipelines</h2>
<p>Now we have the basic understanding to Implement Azure infra using Terraform and Azure DevOps Pipelines. With the knowledge of Terraform definition files and also the YAML file, it is time to jump to the implementation. In my Github InfraProvisioning code repository root folder, there are three folders and the azure-pipelies.yml file. The YML file is the build definition file which has references to the subfolders which includes the job and step definitions for a stage. The stages in the YAML file refers to the validate, plan and apply steps require in Terraform to provision model.</p>
<p>Each stage in the azure-pipelies.yml file refers to sub .yml files which are:</p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>jobs/terraform/validate.yml:</strong> the step will download the latest version of the terraform, installs it and validates the installation.</li>
<li><strong>jobs/terraform/plan.yml:</strong> this step gets the existing infrastructure definition and compares it to the changes, generates the modified infrastructure plan and publish the plan for the next stage.</li>
<li><strong>jobs/terraform/apply.yml:</strong> will get the plan file, extract it, apply changes and save the output back to the storage account for the next run and comparison.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>One more thing, in my previous blog post, I explained how Terraform would use blob storage to save the state files. Include the following job in your build definition if you want to create those initial Azure resources automatically. You can comment the step out once you have the required blob storage. After creating the storage account, create a new blob folder inside the storage account and also create a new secret. You will need these values later when adding all variables to the Azure DevOps environment.</p>
<h2>Settings in Azure DevOps</h2>
<p>Most of the environment variables like Azure Resource Manager values are defined in the Group Variables in the Library section under Pipelines on the left navigation. The idea is to have as many environments as necessary in different subscriptions. If you inspect the apply.yml file, you can find the following variables:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>ARM_CLIENT_ID: $(ARM_CLIENT_ID)</li>
<li>ARM_CLIENT_SECRET: $(ARM_CLIENT_SECRET)</li>
<li>ARM_TENANT_ID: $(ARM_TENANT_ID)</li>
<li>ARM_SUBSCRIPTION_ID: $(ARM_SUBSCRIPTION_ID)</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>To implement Azure infra using Terraform and Pipelines, we need to create an application in Azure Active Directory so Azure DevOps can access our resources in Azure. Follow the following steps to create the application:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Navigate to Azure Portal and choose your Active Directory from the navigation.</li>
<li>Under the AAD, choose <strong>Application Registration</strong> and create a new application. You can name it TerraformAzureDevOps.</li>
<li>From the main page of the application, copy the Application ID and the Tenant Id. We will need these values later.</li>
<li>Choose <strong>Certificates & secrets</strong> from the navigation and create a new secret. Copy this value before changing the view because you will see it once.</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p>Back in the Azure DevOps, and under Library section we have to create the following Variable Groups with the following variables:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>ARM_CLIENT_ID: [The application ID we created in the AAD]</li>
<li>ARM_CLIENT_SECRET: [The secret from the AAD]</li>
<li>ARM_SUBSCRIPTION_ID: [The Subscription ID from Azure]</li>
<li>TERRAFORM_BACKEND_KEY: [The secret from the storage account created using the create-terraform-backend.sh script ]</li>
<li>TERRAFORM_BACKEND_NAME: [The name of the blob folder created using the create-terraform-backend.sh script]</li>
<li>WORKSPACE: [Your choice of name, e.g. Dev]</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p><ul>
<li>ARM_TENANT_ID: [The AAD Id]</li>
<li>TERRAFORM_VERSION: 0.12.18</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Under each variable group the “<strong>Allow access to all pipelines</strong>” should be on!</p>
<h2>Implement Azure infra Modifications</h2>
<p>As you get the build definition up and running in your Azure DevOps environment all you have to do in the future is to edit the <strong>terraform/main.tf</strong> file to manage your Azure infrastructure.</p>
<p>Implement Azure infra using Terraform and Pipelines will help you to save a lot of time and money, not to mention it will also improve the quality, maintainability and the security of the environment.</p>

<p>A crucial feature of DevOps is to give the developer fast feedback if their code changes work. This can be done by automatically building code and running tests every time changes are checked-in. Today, I will show how to create a CI pipeline (continuous integration) for ASP .NET Core.</p>
<h2>Create a .NET Core CI Pipeline in Azure DevOps</h2>
<p>Over the series of my last posts, I created two ASP .NET Core microservices. In this post, I create a CI pipeline to build all projects and run all unit tests in the repository. You can find the code of the demo on Github.</p>
<p>In your Azure DevOps project, go to Pipelines and click Create Pipeline.</p>

<p>In the next window, select where you have your code stored. I select GitHub for this Demo. Usually, I have my code directly in Azure DevOps, then I would select Azure Repos Git. On the bottom, you can see “Use the classic editor”. This opens the old task-based editor. You shouldn’t use this anymore since the new standard is to use YML pipelines. This enables you to have your pipeline in your source control.</p>

<h3>Authorize Github</h3>
<p>Since the code is on GitHub, I have to authorize Azure Pipelines to access my repositories. If the code was on an Azure Repos, this step wouldn’t be necessary.</p>

<p>After authorizing Azure Pipelines for GitHub, all your repositories will be displayed. Search and select for the repository, you want to make the CI pipeline for. In my case, I select the MicroserviceDemo repository.</p>

<p>On the next window, I have to approve to install Azure Pipelines in my Github repository. This allows Azure DevOps to access the repository and write to the code. This is necessary because the CI pipeline will be added to the source control. Again, this is not necessary when you have your code in Azure DevOps.</p>

<h3>Select a Template</h3>
<p>On the next step, select a template for your CI pipeline. Azure DevOps offers many templates like Docker, Kubernetes, PHP, or Node.js. Since my application is a .NET Core microservice, I select the ASP.NET Core template.</p>

<p>That’s it. The template created a simple CI pipeline and you can use it to build your .NET Core solution. In the next section, I will go into more detail about the functionality and add more steps.</p>

<h2>Add more steps to the CI Pipeline</h2>
<p>Before we add more steps to the CI pipeline, let’s have a look at what the template created.</p>
<h3>Analyze the CI Pipeline from the Template</h3>
<p>Above the .yml editor, you can see the path to the pipeline yml file in your source control. I recommend having a pipelines folder of the root folder of your solution. In my case, it is WolfgangOfner/MicroserviceDemo/CustomerApi/pipelines/NetCore-CI-azure-pipeline.yml (and also one for the OrderApi but the principle is the same). It is a good practice to name the file to describe what they do. You can find the finished pipeline on Github or a bit further down.</p>
<p>The lines 1 through 14 configure the pipeline. The trigger section defines that the pipeline is automatically triggered when something changes on the master branch inside the CustomerApi folder. This means that this pipeline does not run when you change something on the OrderApi project. The pool section defines that the pipeline is executed on an ubuntu agent and the variables section lets you define variables for the pipeline. By default, only the buildConfiguration is set to Release.</p>
<p>On line 16 starts the first build step that executes a dotnet build in sets the configuration to Release by using the previously defined buildConfiguration variable. Additionally, a display name is set to identify the step easier in the logs.</p>
<p>The .yml editor can be a pain and overwhelming, especially when you are starting with pipelines. Once you are used to it, it is way better than the old one though.</p>
<h3>Add more steps to the CI Pipeline</h3>
<p>I plan to add several new steps to restore NuGet packages, build the solution, run tests, and publish the solution. The publish step should only be run when the pipeline was triggered by the master branch.</p>
<p>I remove the build script and select the .NET Core task on the right side. I select restore as command and **/CustomerApi*.csproj as the path to the projects to restore each project starting with CustomerApi. Then click Add, to add the task to your pipeline. Make sure that your cursor is at the beginning of the next line under steps.</p>

<p>I repeat the process of adding new .NET Core tasks but I use build to build all projects, test to run all projects that have Test at the end of the project name, and then publish the CustomerApi project. Since I already built and restored the test projects, you can see that I use the –no-restore and –no-build arguments for them. The whole pipeline looks as follows:</p>

<h3>Run Tasks only when the Master Branch triggered the build</h3>
<p>Currently, the publish task runs always, even if I don’t want to create a release. It would be more efficient to run this task only when the build was triggered by the master branch. To do that, I add a custom condition to the publish task. I want to run the publish only when the previous steps succeeded and when the build was not triggered by a pull request. I do this with the following code:</p>
<p>Adding a second pipeline for the OrderApi works exactly the same except that instead of CustomerApi, you use OrderApi.</p>
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
<p>CI pipelines help developers to get fast feedback about their code changes. These pipelines can build code and run tests every time something changed. In my next post, I will show how to add code coverage to the results to get even more information about the code changes, and then I will show how to run your code with every pull request. Later, I will extend the pipeline to build and create Docker images and also to deploy them to Kubernetes.</p>
