<p>From conferences to articles and books, the term DevOps has taken the IT world by storm. The buzz is understandable, as many IT groups are looking for a way out of the morass of delayed projects, questionable quality and missed deliveries in which they often find themselves.</p>

<p>It’s clear DevOps has potential to address the challenges IT faces. Organizations that have embraced DevOps – including companies such as Etsy, Netflix, Target, Walmart, Ticketmaster, Amazon and Facebook – have shown that DevOps principles can lead to competitive differentiation by enabling teams to deliver higher quality software at the speed required with customer expectations of 24/7 uptime and instant access. As a result, it’s not a stretch to say DevOps is becoming the industry standard for software development.</p>
<h2>Why DevOps anyway?</h2>
<p>A little more than 100 years ago, the automotive industry was revolutionized by the first moving assembly line. Once industrialization and automation were applied to dramatically reduce the time required to produce an automobile, there simply was no going back. Certainly a few car manufacturers resisted the change, clinging to their existing approach, but the holdouts all eventually adapted or they perished.</p>
<p style="clear: both"><img src="https://www.cloudbees.com/sites/default/files/image2.jpg" /></p>
<p>Companies that have adopted DevOps principles are innovating faster and leaving competitors behind. So what is the DevOps culture and why do we need it? By changing to a DevOps culture, these companies have aligned all stakeholders – from dev and ops teams to management and more – around the common objective of delivering quality software rapidly and reliably.</p>
<p>Today’s technically savvy customers expect immediate access to the benefits of technological innovation and they’ve grown increasingly intolerant of software that is buggy, unstable or not secure. Customer expectations are driving what is known as the continuous economy, in which customers experience a business through its software and how they deliver it using continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD). In this economy, technology is a business enabler and the ability to reliably deliver quality software is critical.</p>
<p>Organizations will need to transition to DevOps soon to remain competitive in the continuous economy – even to stay relevant. This may sound like hyperbole, but an increasing number of companies are finding out the hard way that almost every company is a software company and that DevOps is a common sense way to gain a sustainable, competitive business advantage. In addition, developers will seek employment at companies where they can innovate instead of fight fires all day.</p>
<p>Even companies in industries far afield from software have found that they need to make software companies part of their core business. Take Ford Motor Company. You may not think of trucks as software, but the Ford F-150 truck features more than 150 million lines of code. A lead engineer on the Ford EcoBoost engine team noted that the “secret sauce” in the success of EcoBoost technology is software.</p>
<p>There is no going back. It’s safe to assume that your more successful competitors will be embracing DevOps sometime within the next five years. The question you must answer is, “Where will your organization be in five years?”</p>
<h2>Why you should care about DevOps</h2>
<p>Simply put, companies that have embraced DevOps are better positioned to solidify their position in existing markets and expand into new ones. Indeed, adopting DevOps is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for software development. A quick look at industry examples – think Apple, Netflix, Tesla, Uber, AirBnB and many others – reveals early successes and tremendous potential.</p>
<p>Once DevOps is implemented, companies have seen an increase in satisfaction for development process stakeholders. Because they are applying modern software development practices, these companies are attracting and retaining better talent, who will drive further quality improvements, productivity improvements and ultimately success at the company. When developers no longer perform tedious, rote manual coding tasks and are free to innovate and make a difference, they are happier.</p>
<p>A large financial software company saw a 15 percent improvement in employee satisfaction just weeks after adopting CD in support of DevOps principles. Just as important, a happier and more engaged workforce means increased productivity, lower costs and better software.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, any company that needs to deliver quality software faster needs to care about DevOps and the supporting practice of CD, which enable continuously building, testing and deploying software in frequent, incremental releases.</p>
<p>Companies that fail to embrace DevOps will bleed talent and fall further behind their competition, serving as illustrations of the adapt-or-perish maxim that is as true in the software development world as it is in the natural world. Which company do you want to work at?</p>
<h2>What is the DevOps model?</h2>
<p>There’s been a lot of talk about what DevOps is and is not, but recent consensus is that DevOps is primarily about culture. Organizations that have adopted this culture value collaboration, experimentation and learning. In a DevOps culture, all participants in all phases of the software delivery lifecycle align around a shared goal: the rapid delivery of stable, high-quality software from concept to customer.</p>
<p>Automation of software development, testing and deployment through continuous delivery goes hand-in-hand with DevOps. Automation enables organizations to deliver software more quickly while ensuring operations can have confidence in what is being deployed, and customers get the quality, security and stability they require.</p>
<h2>The DevOps trinity</h2>
<p>At its core, DevOps is being about gaining alignment between all software development lifecycle participants on three planes – people, process and tools – often called the DevOps trinity. In this framework, the software development lifecycle is viewed as having upstream (development) and downstream (operations) halves. The two halves are part of the same software delivery process but in many traditional IT organizations these halves are highly disconnected (Figure 1).</p>

<p>Upstream, the development culture usually prioritizes speed and innovation, whereas downstream the operations culture is tasked with a focus on maintaining quality, stability and uptime. Upstream, development uses point tools to define and build software using agile methods. Downstream, enterprise class tools are the norm for managing the test, release, deployment and operation of the software.</p>
<p>Downstream meetings are much more likely to be filled with talk of Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) and Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) than Kanban and the latest scrum. DevOps is about connecting these worlds and eliminating the chasm that exists between the upstream and the downstream.A look at the “How” of DevOps</p>
<p>Often, discussions on the how of DevOps are too narrowly focused on the technical core of what happens from the time developers commit code to the time software is deployed to a server. In reality, DevOps extends from the initial concept to the customer deployment.</p>
<p>The full DevOps cycle starts with understanding the customer’s needs. Once they are clear, then you create a plan to define a solution, a plan to deliver it and a plan to support it once it moves into operation, where you gather customer feedback and the whole cycle begins again.</p>

<h2>DevOps –fad or here to stay?</h2>
<p>Anyone who’s been in the software industry for any length of time has seen fads come and go. The buzz for software-oriented architectures (SOA) was all the rage a few years ago, but that buzz faded to a whisper. Waterfall methods are fading fast, replaced by agile development. How can you tell if DevOps is just the latest in a line of operational strategies that will fade out?According to a Harvard Business Review survey sponsored by Google, 86 percent of the 654 respondents say that it is important to their company to develop and put new software into production quickly. That leaves 14 percent who do not realize that they need solutions like DevOps. At times like this, it pays to step back, take a breath and take stock of where we are and where we are going. When we do, it becomes clear that DevOps is not a fad; rather it is the way successful organizations are industrializing the delivery of quality software today and will be the new baseline tomorrow and for years to come.</p>
<h2>DevOps today</h2>
<p>When research shows that most companies surveyed are planning to or are already transitioning to DevOps enabled by CD, that speaks to the current popularity of DevOps. In taking a closer look at the companies that have already adopted CD practices and a DevOps culture, many of these companies are the established leaders in their respective industries and hold a dominant market position. Having made substantial, long-term investments in CD and DevOps, they are already seeing impressive benefits. For example:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Amazon, the leader in public cloud infrastructure, now releases on average every second</li>
<li>Etsy, the leading peer-to-peer e-commerce marketplace, went from deployments that took hours to deploying changes 50 times per day</li>
<li>Ticketmaster, the world’s leading ticketing company and one of the world’s top 10 e-commerce sites, deploys to production at the end of every sprint or multiple times per sprint</li>
<li>Netflix, disrupter of the entire cable and TV industry and responsible for about 30 percent of North American internet traffic, deploys thousands of times daily</li>
<li>Nordstrom, a leading fashion specialty retailer with 323 stores in the U.S., increased the pace of releases to monthly from just twice per year</li>
<li>Allstate, the largest publicly held personal lines property and casualty insurer in the U.S. is now delivering new applications in half the time it took to deploy a single new feature</li>
<li>Coca Cola, the world’s third most valuable brand, has accelerated project delivery as much as 50 percent and cut defects in production by about half</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>While some organizations have resisted making a DevOps transition – either due to confusion about what DevOps entails, concerns that it may just be a passing fad or a simple aversion to change – other organizations have jumped in with both feet.</p>
<p>The organizations who’ve made the jump are eager to reap the benefits being realized by competitors and other companies that have already transitioned to a continuous delivery and a DevOps culture. These companies are differentiating themselves and delivering higher quality software faster by aligning development and operations across the DevOps trinity – people and culture, process and practice, and tools and technology. Better alignment across these three planes enables organizations to improve time to production, drive business value and reduce IT costs.</p>

<h1>Azure DevOps (formerly Visual Studio Team Services)</h1>

<p>Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) -- rebranded as Azure DevOps in 2018 -- is an Azure cloud-hosted extension of Microsoft's Team Foundation Server (TFS) -- now called Azure DvOps -- that assist development teams with special tools and services for software programmers, analysts and testers as well as IT project or team managers. Visual Studio is a software development environment built on the .NET framework that is designed for managing projects and development work in a variety of languages including Visual C# .NET, Visual C++ .NET, Visual Basic .NET, Visual J# and ASP.NET.</p>
<p>VSTS includes software development, collaboration, measurement and reporting tools that fall broadly into server-side and client-side applications. On the server-side, this involves TFS for data storage and collaboration management -- including source control, work item tracking and reporting services. TFS also includes a build server that developers may use to generate releases from specific elements stored in its source control services. Visual Studio's code analysis, test tools and code coverage elements may be used to validate any build before it is deemed fit for release.</p>
<p>In September 2018, Visual Studio Team Services announced its rebranding as Azure DevOps. All prior VSTS users were upgraded to the new Azure DevOps platform; no DevOps functionalities from VSTS were lost. The change from VSTS to Azure DevOps is expected to improve experiences for all users.</p>
<p>The primary difference between VSTS and Azure DevOps is the fact that the newer Azure DevOps allows users to choose which services they would like to employ, from the collection of:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Azure Boards - This service tracks the team's work with Kanbanboards, backlogs, customized reporting and team dashboards.</li>
<li>Azure Pipeline - The Azure continuous integration/continuous delivery Pipeline is a free service that can accommodate up to ten parallel jobs in any open source It also offers file transforms and variable substitutions that are available for web app files as well as XML and JSON files.</li>
<li>Azure Repos - A private Gitrepository that provides functionality like collaborative pull requests and advanced file management.</li>
<li>Azure Test Plans - A completely inclusive planned and exploratory testing solution.</li>
<li>Azure Artifacts - This service generates package feed for Apache Maven, npm and NuGet packages from public or private sources.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>While using all five services provides users with an integrated suite that provides end to end DevOps functionalities for large enterprises, the ability to pick which services to employ also provides flexibility to organizations that don't need the full suite. For example, if an Azure DevOps user is hosting their code in a Git repository found in GitHub, then they can choose to only utilize the Azure Pipeline service for building and deploying.</p>
<p>The rest of this definition will focus on the updated Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps is used primarily by four job positions:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Analysts</li>
<li>Software testers</li>
<li>Programmers</li>
<li>IT project/team managers</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p><strong>Analysts</strong> use the tools and services offered by Azure DevOps to input and document work items. Azure DevOps allows them to create and choose the complexity of their documentation, create templates that make processes simpler, faster and more consistent and record everything in HTML format, with image and other files included.</p>
<p><strong>Software testers</strong> can enter test scripts through Azure DevOps as well as control acceptance tests. Furthermore, advanced reporting is offered that allows them to track all tests done over time.</p>
<p><strong>Programmers</strong> utilize Azure DevOps for integrated unit testing, source control and automated builds. While Azure DevOps cannot be used as a development environment, it easily interfaces with the Microsoft Visual Studio, allowing programmers to feasibly develop with the tools provided by Azure DevOps.</p>
<p><strong>IT project/team managers</strong> use Azure DevOps to monitor their team's performance and progress. Large projects can be divided into smaller iterations, work items can be scheduled and tasks can be assigned to team members through Azure DevOps. Team members also find it easier to update their progress through Azure DevOps, thus further helping project/team managers track the group's and an employee's progress and performance. Furthermore, it can be used to automatically produce reports, such as product backlogs, burndown charts and Kanban boards.</p>
<p>All five Azure DevOps services are open and extensible and can be used with all varieties of applications, regardless of the framework, platform or cloud. Built-in cloud-hosted agents are provided for Windows, Mac OS and Linux and workflows are enabled for native container support and Kubernetes deployment options, virtual machines and serverless environments.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps can be integrated with the Azure DevOps Server -- formerly the Team Foundation Server (TFS) -- the on-premise version of Azure DevOps. This is done through an Azure DevOps Client API that exposes the Azure DevOps Server functions. These include a Team Explorer for browsing and managing items in team projects and a Source Control Explorer that provides Version control and check-in/check-out functions. Azure DevOps can use the Team Build Services rather than its own built-in build services, and the same reporting integrated development environment (IDE) that enables inspection and analysis of Azure DevOps elements may be applied to the Azure DevOps Server and its contents as well.</p>
<p>Azure DevOps can also be integrated with Microsoft Power BI. With Azure DevOps, users can create and customize dashboards as well as access reports located within the product itself. These abilities offer easy access to Azure DevOps Analytics and enable data-driven decision. Integration with Power BI allows Azure DevOps users to pull data from Azure DevOps Analytics, generate reports and customize the reports to fit their needs.</p>
<p>There's also a Team Test Load Agent, licensed separately from Azure DevOps and Azure DevOps Server, that is designed to support automated load testing on Web or Windows based applications. Load test results reside in an Azure DevOps Server data warehouse, and may be linked to particular builds in order to track performance testing across the development and deployment cycles.</p>
<p>Benefits of Azure DevOps include:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Feasible collaboration between distributed teams - In the Azure DevOps extension, programmers have the ability to write code anywhere and in any form; it does not have to be written in .Net. The Git integration also makes it easier to track the progress of a product that is being designed by a multi-team collaboration.</li>
<li>Decreased maintenance costs - Since Azure DevOps is a cloud-based platform, it has much lower, ongoing maintenance costs than on-premise services, such as Azure DevOps Server. Furthermore, subscribers to Azure DevOps do not need to factor in the cost of maintaining servers and upgrade cycles. An active subscription is all that is needed to have constant access to the latest version of Azure DevOps.</li>
<li>Up-to-date DevOps features - Azure DevOps is a beneficial environment for teams that utilize Agile Software Development or DevOps. The automated build and release features with quality assurance greatly increase the efficiency of every participating employee and can also reduce errors associated with manually performing the processes.</li>
<li>Improved stakeholder environment - Business stakeholders have the capability of logging onto the Azure DevOps platform from anywhere to add project requirements, check the status or enter bug reports. Increased stakeholder involvement can improve project success rates.</li>
<li>Uncontained use of Azure DevOps services - The variety of Azure DevOps services are included in all active Visual Studio subscriptions. Subscribers can use the services in every Azure DevOps organization in which they are a member, regardless of whether or not the user created the organization or were added by someone else.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Both Azure DevOps and Azure DevOps Server provide users with integrated and collaborative environments that support continuous integration, Git and Agile tools to plan and track work. The primary difference between the two options is that Azure DevOps is available as a service on the cloud while Azure DevOps Server is installed directly on a user's premise.</p>
<p>Another difference is that three options are available for scoping and scaling data in Azure DevOps Server -- deployment, team projects collections and team projects -- while only two are provided in Azure DevOps -- accounts and team projects. The accounts option in Azure DevOps operates similarly to the team projects collection option in Azure DevOps Server.</p>
<p>Furthermore, while Azure DevOps Server usually connects to an intranet server and is authenticated with Azure AD credentials. Use of the intranet means Azure DevOps Server can only be utilized on the server's premises. In contrast, Azure DevOps connects to the public internet and can be used anywhere by logging-in with a Microsoft account, Azure AD or personal access tokens (PATs) -- alternate passwords specifically for Azure DevOps.</p>
<p>Other differences include:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Azure DevOps Server requires timely server maintenance and upgrades while the cloud-based Azure DevOps does not require users to maintain or upgrade any servers.</li>
<li>Azure DevOps Server functionality would be unavailable during a power failure or crash, but Azure DevOps can continue to be used.</li>
<li>Azure DevOps Server does not offer a SharePoint integration feature but Azure DevOps does.</li>
<li>Azure DevOps Server cannot perform load testing whereas Azure DevOps can perform load testing on the cloud.</li>
<li>Azure DevOps Server does not provide a SQL reporting service feature, but Azure DevOps does.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>Some benefits of using Azure DevOps instead of Azure DevOps Server include:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>easier setup;</li>
<li>can be used immediately;</li>
<li>can connect to the Azure DevOps server from anywhere;</li>
<li>the operating system doesn't require management; and</li>
<li>the hardware doesn't require updating.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>The primary difference between GitHub and Azure DevOps is that GitHub focuses on open source projects while Azure DevOps focuses on more closed source projects. However, both services try to make it accessible for users to switch back and forth between public and private development modes. Furthermore, while GitHub offers both private and public repositories, it does not provide an integrated build server, but Azure DevOps does. Therefore, Azure DevOps can also be used as a continuous integration platform for GitHub.</p>
<p>Both GitHub and Azure DevOps are focused on Git with an emphasis on the various aspects of a collaborative software development process. Both services provide comprehensive and feature-rich platforms used to share and track code and build software with continuous integration and continuous delivery. Azure DevOps offers a variety of tools and services that facilitate project creation, development, testing and management. Similarly, GitHub offers team-based software development tools, including project issue tracking, code review and various social features.</p>
<p>GitHub offers superior community support when compared to Azure DevOps; it was designed to be community-based and highly social. While Azure DevOps offers a community of Microsoft developers and open source proponents, it is nowhere near as large or supportive as the GitHub community.</p>

<p>In this article I will be sharing the good practices in working with YAML based pipelines using an example of Blazor app and publishing it Azure App Service.</p>
<p>If you have already started using Azure Devops, you surely would have come across Pipelines service in it. Azure Pipelines will enable you to orchestrate CI/CD in more defined and standardized manner. Azure Pipelines supports two types<br />1. Classic Pipelines<br />2. YAML Pipelines</p>
<p>Let us explore the YAML ones. Basically you can write the entire CI/CD in one single YAML pipeline which is convenient for apps with not much of third party tools integration. Another good way is to split the entire pipeline into small YAML files or templates for items such as Variables, Build and Deploy stages. By doing this the actual pipeline will be quite neat and readable.</p>
<p>Below is the structure of the YAML Pipelines</p>

<p>We will inspect each yaml file in detail</p>
<p>1. Standard-CI-CD-Pipeline.yaml</strong> ? This is</em> the main yaml file. We will refer other templates from here.</em> <br />The list items in trigger section enables the triggering criteria ? Master/Release branch changes.</em> <br />Variables are read from templates which is another yaml file in the same directory. Same goes for build and deployment templates. Please note that we are also passing variables read from the variables template to the build and deployment template using the parameters value.</em></p>
<p>2. template-variables.yaml</strong> ? Common variables for the build and deployment templates are read from this yaml file.</em></p>
<p>3. template-build.yaml ?</strong> This is the template for building the project solution. Sample shown is for a .net core app</em>. You may customize according to the type of programming language used for the project.</em> The parameters that is send from the main yaml file are received here and consumed in the subsequent steps. You may also edit the parameters here as well.</em></p>
<p>4. template-deployment.yaml ?</strong> This is the deployment yaml file. Since I am publishing the app to Azure App Service, I</em> have customized the yaml specifically.</em> <br />Please note on the highlighted area, since we are tapping multi-stage pipelines which involves CI and CD together ; referring artifacts should be done in the same way as shown below.</em></p>
<p>Approvals on the multi-stage pipelines</strong></p>
<p>Compared to Azure Classic Pipelines, approvals on multi-stage pipelines are handled in a different way. Azure DevOps provides a new feature called Environment</strong> under Pipelines which can recreate the approvals workflow. To enable it please follow the below steps</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Create Environment under Pipelines. Lets say Production</li>
<li>Click the 3 dots on the right end ? and select Manage Approvals and checks and the enter the email IDs?</li>
</ol>

<p>In the deployment template yaml file include this below step as show in the screenshot</p>
<p>If you configured everything correctly and after executing the multi-stage pipeline, you can see something like below in Azure Devops ??</p>
