<p>Templating is a powerful but risky tool to accelerate Pipeline Development. Why is it risky? Well, imagine you have 10 Pipelines depending on 1 template. You want to add a feature to that template, but how do you test it? The only way to test a Pipeline is … well run it. Make a change to a template, hit Run and hope for the best.</p>
<h2>? A change to a template might work for 1 pipeline but not for the other.</h2>
<p>Once you got a pipeline running without any errors (yay), after you made the template change, you still have to validate all other pipelines that are depending on this template.</p>
<p>? A c h ange to a template won’t trigger the depended pipelines.</strong></p>
<p>In fact it’s quite frustrating if a pipeline suddenly fails, and you can’t find any changes in the commit history, and only to find out somebody changed the referenced template.</p>
<p>Update</strong>: apparently you can have pipeline trigger on changes in the linked repositories</p>
<p>?? Follow this article for how to remediate these risks.</p>
<h1>Templates and Parameters</h1>
<p>Template parameters are the essence of a template. Using parameters you can re-use templates in different pipelines, and in different projects.</p>
<p>?? Unlike Classic UI Task Groups</strong>, YAML Templates can be used across Devops Projects! To achieve this, store the templates in a separate git repo, and link it by declaring it in the repositories : section</p>
<h2>versus Variables</h2>
<p>Here is nice detailed explanation of the inner workings of Variables in Azure Devops Pipelines. It says that it only focuses on YAML Templates, but the overall concepts like precedence</strong> still apply on the classic UI style pipelines.</p>
<p>Now Parameters do only exist in YAML Templates, and like Variables they are settable by the User.</p>
<p>Here is a ??Gotcha</strong>: Unlike variables, parameters are only set once</strong>, at the beginning of the build run. Parameters are used to dynamically construct the entire Pipeline based on custom logic. Once it is set, it cannot be changed during runtime. Variables, on the other hand, can change during the pipeline run, for example you can have the deployPath variable change in each Stage.</p>
<p>Another ??Gotcha</strong> is that you can’t simple reference to a Parameter in an inline script like a Variable, you’ll have to use a clunky format expression</strong> to get the value in the script as a normal variable:</p>
<p>??You can pass a Variable as a Template parameter</p>
<p>? But remember the value of the Variable has to be set before the Pipeline run (so it has to be declared in the variables: section).</p>
<p>?Also take note that pipeline variables (the one you set in the UI) cannot be used to pass as Parameters.</p>
<h1>One Template to rule them all</h1>
<p>Actually don’t do this. Avoid big bang templates, like with any code.</p>
<p>You can leverage Nested Templates to keep keep templates small and modular. Group logical connected tasks together. Then create a higher level templates using several smaller templates. This way you can keep your changes more isolated.</p>
<p>?? When nesting, use the relative path of the caller template</strong> instead of the usual syntax — template: name@repo</p>
<h1>Release/Deployment Pipelines</h1>
<p>In Classic UI Pipelines</strong> we had a separate menu item Pipelines</em> — Releases</em> in the sidebar. With YAML Templates, this is not the case anymore. CI and CD are all located in Pipelines</em>.</p>
<p>Because of this, you can’t reuse existing Deployment Groups. To have a similar functionality using YAML</strong>, you need to create Environments in each Project. And if you want to target a VM inside that Environment, you have to register it first.</p>
<p>As a result there will be an agent installed on the VM specifically for that Azure Devops project/Environment.</p>
<p>??You have to do this for every Environment, for every Project, which is very tedious when doing this manually.</p>
<p>Also if your VM is hosting multiple products, you might end up with a lot of agents listeners (they don’t take that much resources when idle, but still something to consider)</p>
<p>?? The Azure Devops team recently added manual Approvals to Environments, which was a dealbreaker for me when YAML templates didn’t have it at first. Other pre-stage checks like Azure Functions, Business Hours etc.. are also available by now, but post-deployment gates are still not available.</p>
<h1>Key Vault Integration</h1>
<p>Now let’s talk about Variables and Variable Groups.</p>
<p>It’s a good thing that Azure Devops supports Secrets out-of-the-box in Variable Groups. Here are some lacking features:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>You can’t view a Secret once set</li>
<li>You can’t clone a Secret</li>
<li>When somebody makes a change, it’s not audited</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>You can integrate an Azure Key Vault</strong> to solve the above issues. It’s quite cheap if you only use it for this purpose.</p>
<p>I can’t explain it better how to setup one as here.</p>
<h1>Testable Scripts</h1>
<p>I started convert inline scripts into standalone scripts, because the logic was getting more complicated and running pipelines as a debugging tool can waste a lot of time. Remember I said the only way to test a Pipeline is to run it? Well having portions of logic converted as stand alone scripts will allow you the test them separately, and in a local environment.</p>
<p>So I converted these inline script logic as actual script files (mostly .ps1 ) stored in the same Azure Repo</strong> where the YAML Templates are residing.</p>
<p>To use these scripts in a Pipeline you need to checkout the linked repo in the main pipeline like so:</p>
<p>Then call the script as any other script:</p>
<p>? A nice feature about this is that you can now pass $<< parameters.MyParam >> as a script argument when using a template, as with an inline script you would have to use the format expression</strong> first @</p>

<h1>Java project management in VS Code</h1>
<p>This document will give you an overview of how to manage your Java project in Visual Studio Code.</p>
<p>If you run into any issues when using the features below, you can contact us by clicking the <strong>Report an issue</strong> button below.</p>
<h2>Project management</h2>
<p>Managing a project in VS Code requires the Project Manager for Java extension. The extension helps manage class paths and dependencies, and create new projects, packages, and classes.</p>
<h3>Project view</h3>
<p>Project view helps you view your project and its dependencies, and provides entry points for project management tasks. You can switch between a hierarchy view and flat view.</p>

<h3>Create a project</h3>
<p>You can create a project or source only workload by clicking the <strong>+</strong> sign on project view, or through the command: <strong>Java: Create Java Project.</strong> . During creation, VS Code will facilitate installing required extension(s) per your project type, if the extension(s) weren't installed.</p>

<h3>Import a project or module</h3>
<p>A project or module is imported to a workspace through <strong>File</strong> > <strong>Open Folder</strong> or <strong>File</strong> > <strong>Open Workspace</strong> menu. VS Code for Java will detect your project type automatically. As a tip, you can run the command <strong>Java: Import Java projects in workspace</strong> to reimport a project and alert the language server that there were changes to the project, without reloading your window.</p>
<h3>Add a dependency</h3>
<p>For Maven project, you can add a dependency by clicking the <strong>+</strong> sign next to <strong>Maven Dependencies</strong> node in project view.</p>

<h3>Add a JAR</h3>
<p>JAR file(s) can be added by clicking the <strong>+</strong> sign next to <strong>Referenced Libraries</strong> node in project view.</p>

<h3>Export to JAR</h3>
<p>You can export your build to JAR by clicking the <strong>?</strong> sign on project view or run command: <strong>Java: Export Jar.</strong> .</p>

<h2>Configure JDK</h2>
<p>As Java evolves, it's common that developers work with multiple versions of JDK. To correctly configure your environment and project, you have to know two configurations, java.configuration.runtimes and java.home . The former specifies options for your project's execution environment; the latter specifies your language server's execution environment.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Note</strong>: Although the Java language server requires JDK version 11 or above to run, this is <strong>NOT</strong> a requirement to your project's runtime.</p></blockquote>
<h3>JDK for projects</h3>
<p>VS Code will detect the runtime required for your project and choose the appropriate configuration from java.configuration.runtimes .</p>
<p>Runtime names must be one of: "J2SE-1.5", "JavaSE-1.6", "JavaSE-1.7", "JavaSE-1.8", "JavaSE-9", "JavaSE-10", "JavaSE-11", "JavaSE-12", "JavaSE-13", "JavaSE-14". We will update the list with each supported release of the JDK.</p>
<h3>JDK for source only</h3>
<p>If you only work with source files and don't use a build tool, VS Code will apply an appropriate runtime using the default configuration of java.configuration.runtimes . If a default isn't specified, VS Code will use the runtime used by the language server, which is determined by the order shown below:</p>

<h2>Library configuration</h2>
<p>Behind the scene, there's a setting java.project.referencedLibaries in settings.json . Below are details on how to customize this setting.</p>
<p><strong>Include libraries</strong></p>
<p>The libraries to reference are described using a set of glob patterns.</p>
<p>The settings above will add all .jar files in workspace's library folder along with foo.jar from a specified absolute path to the project's external dependencies.</p>
<p>The referenced libraries are then watched by VS Code, and the project will be refreshed if there is a change to any of these dependent files.</p>
<p>By default, VS Code will reference all JAR files in workspace's lib directory using the glob pattern lib/**/*.jar .</p>
<p><strong>Exclude some libraries</strong></p>
<p>If you want to exclude some libraries from the project, you can expand java.project.referencedLibraries to use include/exclude fields and add an exclude glob pattern:</p>
<p>In the example above, any binary JAR files in the library/sources folder are ignored as the project's external dependencies.</p>
<p><strong>Attach source jars</strong></p>
<p>By default, a referenced <binary>.jar will try to search <binary>-sources.jar under the same directory, and attach it as source if one match is found.</p>
<p>If you want to manually specify a JAR file as a source attachment, you can provide a key-value map in the sources field:</p>
<p>In this way, bar-src.jar is attached to bar.jar as its source.</p>
<p>In case VS Code throws an error for a classpath issue, try setting your classpath manually by either setting the CLASSPATH environment variable or editing the .classpath file with the path to the JAR file:</p>
<p>In some rare cases, you may need to clean the Java workspace by executing the <strong>Java: Clean the java language server workspace</strong> command from the Command Palette ( ??P (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+P ) ) to let the language server rebuild your dependencies.</p>
<h2>Lightweight Mode</h2>
<p>VS Code for Java supports two modes, lightweight and standard. With lightweight mode, only source files and JDK are resolved by the language server; with standard mode, imported dependencies are resolved and the project is built by the language server. Lightweight mode works best when you need a super quick-to-start and lightweight environment to work with your source files, for example, reading source code, navigating among source code and JDK, viewing outline and Javadoc, and detecting and fixing syntax errors. Also, code completion is supported within the scope of source files and JDK.</p>
<p>Lightweight mode doesn't resolve imported dependencies nor build the project, so it does not support running, debugging, refactoring, linting, or detecting semantic errors. For these features to be available, you need to switch your workspace from lightweight mode to standard mode.</p>
<p>You can control which mode to launch with by configuring java.server.launchMode with the options below:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Hybrid (default) - Firstly, a workspace is opened with lightweight mode. You will be asked whether to switch to standard mode if your workspace contains unresolved Java projects. If you choose <strong>Later</strong>, it will stay in lightweight mode. You can click the server mode icon on the Status bar to manually switch to standard mode.</li>
<li>Standard - A workspace is opened with standard mode.</li>
<li>LightWeight - A workspace is opened with lightweight mode. You can click the server mode icon on the Status bar to manually switch to standard mode.</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>The Status bar indicates which mode the current workspace is in using different icons.</p>

<h2>Build Status</h2>
<p>When you edit Java source code in Visual Studio Code, the Java language server is building your workspace to provide you with the necessary language features. You can see the detailed build task status and watch what is happening behind the scene by clicking the language server Status bar icon in the lower right.</p>

<p>Contacted by the HR person, then, after a preliminary phone discussion invited for an in-person interview. Talked to the resource manager and two other people who were connected by remote voice call. Had a glance at the office, went on my way.</p>
<p>Primary impression from the interview process: Good amenities and overall technical level, but an aggressively sterile work environment - minimal human touch (no personal items at the workplace), all decisions passed from top to bottom, projects are varied but not always viable. An excellent, top of the line body shop.</p>
