woensdag 3 oktober 2018

DevOps : Testing of a database project in Azure DevOps (Part VI)

Introduction

In my previous blogpost, I've mostly talked about the Microsoft hosted agent and that works great when you want build and release your data warehouse and BI project. The code is checked in, an automatic build is started and the code is released to a release environment. But, what about testing? Testing is one of the key elements of Azure Devops (formerly known as VSTS): build the code, test it and release the code to a new environment. I'm using the terminology VSTS and Azure Devops interchangeably throughout this blogpost as the name change just happened while I was writing this blogpost.

If you want to test your database code with unit testing scripts, there has to be an environment where the testscripts can be run against it. Now as far as I can see now, there are a couple of options here:

Deploy the database code to the localDB instance on the Azure Devops server and run the database tests on the localDB instance.

Deploy the code on an on - premise box and run the test locally. For this setup there must be local agent installation.

Deploy the code to an Azure Database / VM box and run some tests on that database/machine.

I've noticed that as a starter it is a good idea to begin with the first option : Deploy the code to the localDB on the Azure DevOps server. It is possible to deploy and run the test against the localDB on the Azure DevOps server, although it took me while to figure it out. So, this blogpost is a report of my experiments with unit testing and automating this on a localdb instance, in a DevOps environment.

I've used an article by Rahul Mittal on code project for setting up a Unit testing. I've used this example to automate my builds and testing in Azure DevOps.

DBUnitTesting project

The database test project as described in the article on CodeProject describes 7 types of tests on a database. For this blog post, I followed the article in detail and executed the steps. I can recommend doing this too, if you want to know more about this subject.

There are a couple of important steps that are necessary to implement a database test project:

Create a database project in VS2015 or VS2017 (I used VS2017).

Create a testproject in VS2015 or 2017 together with the database project in the solution.

Define the tests in the project.

Execute and test the testproject.

As said before, there are 7 types of test possible:

Counting the number of rows in a table.

Data checksum in order to check whether some data has changed in the table.

Check if the schema has changed.

A performance check if a stored procedure is performing within some time boundaries.

Check if a query or a stored procedure returns an empty resultset.

Check if a query or a stored procedure returns a non-empty empty resultset.

Standard not test option: "inconclusive".

The tests are located in the test explorer where it is possible to run the tests.

If you use the wrong dll you will get the following messages :

I used Visual SourceSafe for source control many many years back. I later used TFS (Team Foundation Server) from the beta version to today's latest version, VSTS which is now Azure DevOps.

Some years back I started playing with "Git", the distributed version control system , when there was no integration in Visual Studio whatsoever.

Today, Microsoft offers TFVC (Team Foundation Version Control) and TFGit as first class citizens in Team Foundation Server or Azure DevOps.

I usually tell developers on teams I help Setup development environments that it is really a matter of preference in certain circumstances.

Now, if your team members are geographically dispersed and you want them to access source code over the internet, you are going to have to use Git or some other distributed source control systems.

But if all your team members are all in the same campus network or can remotely access the Team foundation server, then, it is really a matter of preference (Read Git(TFGit) vs TFVC).

Azure DevOps that was recently launched to replace Visual Studio Team Services, will almost force you to go with the Microsoft implementation of Git (especially if you need to setup public repos).

The steps I am giving below assume that you don't have any IDE integration (or even if you do, the command line option will only make your overall experience more pleasant).

Over the past days, I decided to launch a small but useful intellectual exercise:
Setup a team project in Azure DevOps, Simulate a Scrum agile process, use git for my repos. The project is simply to track all my study session, practice code and tests in preparation for Exam70-487.

I created a sample ASP.NET MVC application in Visual Studio 2017 and pushed my initial code to my Exam70487 repos found here:
https://rogerwamba.visualstudio.com/Exam70487

The first thing after the project is created is to open it in Azure DevOps and click "Clone"

I will also recommend to get the credentials by clicking the "Generate Git credentials" button:

That's it for the Azure DevOps side.

Now, back in your local development machine:
Make sure you install Git for Windows on your computer if not already done:
Download it at https://git-scm.com/downloads
You can safely just pick the default option.

Once you are done, just navigate to the folder where your code is and do this:
Right click anywhere in the folder and select "Git Bash here", you will a window like this:

Type "git init": This will turn your folder into a git-aware workspace or git local repository where you could track your changes
Next, link your local repo to the remote repo in Azure DevOps:
git remote add origin https://rogerwamba.visualstudio.com/Exa ... /Exam70487

Add your files to the local repo:
git add .

Commit your changes to your local repo
git commit -m "Initial Commit"

Measuring code quality (and of course acting on it!) is a vital part of software development that helps you to keep Technical Debt low and the ability to make changes quickly and with quality high.

As business tycoons explain, reducing internal quality slows you down.

In Continuous Delivery, it plays an important role in shipping high-quality software often and fast.

As IT buzzwords change like the wind. You s hould always stay updated with the latest trends that might increase your productivity and improve the process overall. So today let?s speak about the buzz word ?DevOps? along with Code Analysis as a Service because a lot of people are not actually sure is it a movement? A new process or technology? A job title? Or just a way of thinking? Also, we will look at the top DevOps technology, its benefits.

As we spoke about top DevOps technology, the very first name that comes to my mind is Azure DevOps a tool provided by Microsoft to implement the buzz word ?DevOps? into the project workflow and process management.

In a single sentence, Azure DevOps is a suite of offerings in the cloud that you need to build your software product/project from beginning to end.

Azure DevOps, formerly known as Visual Studio Team System (VSTS). It helps you to plan your project, manage source code in repositories like Git, TFVC, Subversion, GitHub and deploys the code through the CI/CD pipeline system to cloud or in on-premise resources. Additionally, it gives a collaborative platform for developers, business users, and test engineers, project managers under one umbrella to real-time tracking of work and quick shipment of the product.

Before, arising the genuine question as below. Lets Start :-)

Pre-Requisite: You must have an Azure DevOps account as we are leveraging here azure-DevOps tool as a DevOps technology.

Let us start with setting up, SonarCloud first. I have already created an organization. Now, let?s start afresh with creating a project.

Azure devops publish artifact - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops publish artifact

[youtube]

Azure devops publish artifact Current news Azure devops publish artifact

How to build, sign and deploy your UWP application using Azure DevOps and App Center

Create your appxupload and distribute it to your users.

In this tutorial I m going to show you how to build and sign your UWP application and distribute it to your users through App Center.

To do that, we need to follow these steps:

Create an UWP certificate (PFX) for your application

Install the PFX file into your build agent

Build and sign your UWP application using Azure DevOps

Publish the appx packages into Azure DevOps or App Center

So let?s start by going to Azure DevOps!

Inside the Pipelines tab create a New pipeline and follow the 4 steps to get the source code from the correct repository. Azure DevOps will automatically create a new azure-pipelines.yml at the root of your project folder. This is where the job definition will be defined and then interpreted by Azure DevOps.

Prepare the certificate

First of all we need to create the PFX certificate and install it to the agent. To do that just follow my previous tutorial about it.

Now we have our certificate installed to our agent and a variables group called uwp-pipeline ready to use. We first need to restore the Nugets associated to our project, to do that just add these two tasks as first steps:

If you correctly follow the previous steps you should have an azure-pipelines.yml looking like this:

I personally like to automatically run my pipeline when the master branch is updated, it?s why I added the trigger option to the script.

Build and sign your UWP application

It?s time to build your UWP application and sign it using your certificate.

First, complete your list of variables as below by adding the solution path, the build platform, the build configuration and the appx Package Directory:

To sign the appx package we need to enable the signature configuration, pass the PFX certificate location, the associated password and finally we need the thumbprint of the certificate. The thumbprint can be found inside the .csproj of your UWP project after choosing the certificate inside Visual Studio.

Add the thumbprint to the variables group and then add the build task like this:

Notice that the variable called mySecureFile correspond to the name we previously setup in the download secure file task. This variable allow us to get the PFX file path installed on the agent. This build task will generate the Appx Packages.

Distibute your application

We first need to add a task to copy our files from the working directory of our agent to the artifact staging directory like this:

Now we have two options:

Publish the entire Appx Packages folder inside Azure DevOps so it will be downloadable

Publish the .appxupload into App Center so it will be easily accessible to your users

Publish your artifact

If you choose the first option just add the publish artifacts task to your pipeline like this:

When you run the pipeline, you will be able to download the Appx Packages. Here is what you should have if you display it inside Azure DevOps:

As you can see in the image above, you have the .appxupload file that can be uploaded to App Center, let?s do that in the next section!

Upload your package to App Center

Now we have our appxupload signed and ready to be sent to our users. My favorite tool for that is App Center, you can share your application with different groups of testers before publish it to a store and that?s really useful.

Let?s continue by setting up the connection between App Center to Azure DevOps. To do this, just follow my tutorial about it and then follow the next steps.

If you followed correcly the previous instructions you can now add your app slug and distribution group ID to the variables group. At this point your uwp-pipeline variables group should look like this:

Finally let?s add the following task to send our .appxupload into App Center like this:

If you run the pipeline now you will see the application in your App Center account:

You can now download it to in your Windows machine and test it!

You will find full source code in this Github repository.

You liked this tutorial ? Leave a star in the associated Github repository !

Azure devops delete organization - Эдуард Кабринский

Cannot delete old build definitions in Azure DevOps

I have been experiencing a problem for quite a while now in my current environment, in that some of our old builds cannot be deleted. When you attempt to do so it results in the following error:

One or more builds associated with the requested pipeline(s) are retained by a release. The pipeline(s) and builds will not be deleted.

Many of our pipelines have undergone a lot of change over time to the degree it is not even obvious anymore why (or indeed where) these builds are being prevented from being dropped. The only thing that is clear is that until they can be, the old build definitions will remain.

I have tried to set the Stop retaining the build setting for all builds associated with a build definition to no avail. The setting just does not seem to want to take in most cases.

I have also tried playing around with build retention policies and even tried tidying up the release pipelines (and releases) themselves. Unfortunately for me, those darn build pipelines do not want to delete.

Today I decided to put some of my recent Powershell and Azure DevOps REST API experiences (see previous posts in this blog) to the test and attempt to get to the bottom of the problem. As it turns out there is a build property called retainedByRelease that is exposed through the REST API which is the reason why a build cannot be removed -resulting in our irritating error.

Using the same technique that I wrote about in Querying Azure DevOps REST API with PowerShell I first decided to try an report on this property. Please refer back to the post above for more explanation on utilizing the REST API, but I realized I would need to make two REST API calls. The first would be to query one or more build definitions and the second would be to query all builds for each build definition. More specifically, with this last call I would report on the retainedByRelease property.

Querying the build definition builds

In the first piece of code we create our authorization token.

Next we set our organization and project variables.

Our first REST API call queries all build definitions within the project.

For brevity I provide only a subset of the results:

As you can see, from the three active build definitions listed, each one has at least one build that is marked for retention by release.

Setting the build retainedByRelease property

Now we have a procedure in place to query the retainedByRelease property, it is just as easy to set it. If you are trying to remove a specific Build Definition (or builds), you can implement a filter in the builddefinitions iterator. So:

Would now become:

In the above example we are filtering on a single build definition, but feel free to use the filter of your choosing.

The final thing we need to do is make a REST API call to update each build returned by this filtered build definition. We can so this as follows by adding the following line inside our build iterator:

You will note the use of -Method Patch within this call rather than -Method Get and the JSON body. The patch method allows us to partially update resources (in this case one field) with the JSON body provided.

Putting it all together

So if we wanted to update the builds of one specific Build Definition called ARM Templates Build we would run the following code:

Now that all your builds for the ARM Templates Build Build Definition are deleted, you should be able to remove this build definition without further error (you do not need to first remove its builds).

Summary

There are certain issues that you might experience in Azure DevOps which seem almost impossible to resolve through the GUI, but yet again the Azure DevOps API can come to our rescue. In this specific example we have easily queried aspects of DevOps through PowerShell, and this time even changed information through it to resolve our problem.

I hope you find this post useful for this rather frustrating problem!

Since we had moved there from a one-bedroom apartment with only two windows and a total of 500 square feet, it felt like a mansion to us. All of a sudden, we went ...
