Pipeline Resource Distribution

This build pipeline extension provides a way to distribute one or more JSON files representing Task Groups , Variable Groups and Service Connections to one or more team projects in the same organisation.

Description

The extension is called Distribution-Pipelines because, the Task Groups, Variable Groups and Service Connections (JSON files) which it is designed to distribute, contain tasks that together represent standard, compliant build pipelines. The current version of the extension will distribute any valid task group. See Related Topics for Task Groups, Variable Groups and Service Connections details. The build pipeline extension allows one or more teams to manage and maintain JSON definitions, which other projects in the same organisation can consume.

Add these tasks to a Build Pipeline and link the pipeline to a repo which contains one or more JSON file definitions - reprsenting task groups, variable groups and service connections. The extension requires a personal access token (PAT) of a user with the rights to add and update the resource definitions, as well as setting access control permissions of task groups in all or any team projects in the current organisation. The user should not be a member of any team project. For more details read the section Security.

Use a Hosted Agent to run the Agent Job.

Azure DevOps Details

Is Azure DevOps Cloud

This additional option recently added to support Azure DevOps Server i.e. Version 12 of extension. This option would be available in version V3 of Service connection, V8 of task groups and V3 of variable groups.

By default the option in checked to target Azure DevOps cloud only

To target Azure DevOps Server, uncheck option, this would display textbox 'Azure DevOps On-premises Url'. Enther the on-premises url. For example: https://dev.mycompany.azure.com/DefaultCollection/

A Personal Access Token (PAT) with the correct scopes for creating and updating Taskgroups, Variablegroups and Serviceconnection across this organisation. The default value is the process variable $(Maintain.Pipelines.Pat) . Define it, and assign a PAT. The process variable must be a secret variable. It is recommended to select All Scopes when creating the PAT.

Run Type

SourceType

There are two options:

Files - See the Files option

Folder - See the Folder option

Team Projects To Target

There are three options:

Specific team projects - See the Projects option

All team projects except - See the Projects to Exclude option

All team projects - to distribute the selected task groups, variable groups and service connection to all team projects in this organisation

Commit Message

The reason for the change. This would normally be the last commit message. The default value is $(Build.SourceVersionMessage)

Projects

These are the specific team projects to which the selected task group(s), variable group(s) and Service connection(s) will be distributed. If providing multiple teams, use a comma (,) to separate each project name.

Projects to Exclude

To exclude one or more Azure DevOps Team Projects from the run use this option. If providing multiple teams, use a comma (,) to separate each and quote the names if they contain spaces.

Folder

This is the name of a single directory. Only valid JSON files in this folder will be included in the run. A task group is deemed to be valid if it conforms to the task group, variable group and service connection specification.

Files

One or more JSON files containing a valid taskgroup, variablegroup and serviceconnection definition. If the files are not in the same directory as the script they must be fully qualified. If providing multiple files, use a comma (,) to separate each.

Deny Contributor Edit Permission

The optional permission parameter used to Deny the Contributor role Edit permission on distributed task groups

Advanced Settings

Increase Verbosity

The extension is quite verbose and logs relevant progress information. If necessary, or preferred, increase verbosity to include addition progress and status information in the logs

Request Throttle

While updating the access control list (ACL) of the team project Contributor group the extension sometimes encounters a situation where the ACL can't be loaded for the current task group. The extension will retry upto 4 times, pasuing each time for the number of seconds specified here. The default wait time is 5 seconds.

Compliancy Notes

Variable group(s) are variables used in pipeline hence distribute them first.

Service connections are mentioned in task groups in order to communicate with external system like SonarQube, Splunk etc. hence distribute them before task group distribution.

After successful distribution of variable groups and service connection, distribute task groups.

With respect to task groups we have introduced a new attribute isMinorChange . Valid values are false and true . Add this attribute to the Task group JSON file. When you patch or introduce a minor change to the task group, use "isMinorChange": "true" . If the change is a major change use "isMinorChange": "false" . A minor change will not increment the Task group version. A major change will create a new task group version. If you forget to add this attribute, all task group changes, whether major, minor or patch will result in a major change, i.e. a new task group version.

Security

The access control of each task group distributed by the extension is updated. The Contributor role is denied edit permission. Consequently a distributed task group is set to read-only in the target team project. This is by design. Centrally designed and maintained pipelines can be shared with one or more team projects. Responsibility for maintaining the task group(s) remains with originating team project.

The user of the Personal Access Token used by the extension should not be a member of the Contributor role in the target team project. Subsequent distributions of the task group will fail once the edit permission is deny if they are a member of the contributor group.

Кабринский Эдуард - Azure devops service hooks - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops service hooks

[youtube]

Azure devops service hooks Local news Azure devops service hooks

Datadog Service Hooks Integration for Azure DevOps

Datadog

Datadog is the essential monitoring platform for cloud infrastructure, applications, and logs. We bring together data from servers, containers, databases, and third-party services to make your stack entirely observable. These capabilities help DevOps teams communicate, troubleshoot performance issues, and ensure customers are getting the best user experience with a single monitoring tool.

How It Works:

This integration allows you to configure service hooks from Azure DevOps events. These are ingested into Datadog as new events that can be used for correlation, troubleshooting, and alerting. We also use them to create metrics in Datadog so you can track and alert on the number of different events types over time, as well as how long builds and work items take to complete.

Correlate your Azure DevOps events with monitoring data from the rest of your environment for improved visibility into how your developer operations are impacting application performance.

Use the Out-of-the-box dashboard for an overview of what's happening in Azure DevOps.

See builds and releases in context with performance data.

Create monitors to get notified on critical issues.

Share what you saw, write what you did.

And with 350+ integrations, including dozens of the most popular Azure and Microsoft services, you can have full visibility into your entire stack in one platform.

Other Resources:

In addition to this integration, we also have the Datadog Monitors as Deployment Gates extension that enables you to stop problematic deployments in their tracks automatically.

For more information about using Datadog and Azure DevOps together, check out our blog and documentation.

Question

We are moving our Azure DevOps organization from a free subscription to a paid subscription. I used a free AAD for the users. Unfortunately I cannot see the DevOps organization in the free AAD to disconnect it.

We need to disconnect from the old AAD and connect to the new AAD bound to our Windows AD.

It is not necessary to migrate the users. I will disconnect their old credentials from the security groups, and connect the new ones.

Can we simply connect the DevOps organization to the new AAD?

All replies

So, it seems that the new DevOps has been created in a new Subscription with a new Azure AD Tenant. If that be the case, you will have to create all your users and groups in the new tenant once again - i.e. if you do not want to associate the DevOps Subscription to your old free Azure AD Tenant.

One thing to consider here is that - if you have a paid Azure Subscription, does not necessarily mean that you have a paid Azure AD Tenant as well. Every subscription comes with a free Azure AD Tenant, unless you opt for the Basic or Premium paid tenant as well.

Now, if you have the Basic or Premium Tenant, you would have to re-create the users and the groups to the new tenant.

However, if the tenant with the DevOps Subscription is a free tenant in itself - I would suggest you to associate the Subscription to the old tenant. Refer - To associate an existing subscription to your Azure AD directory

Recurring Schedules in Azure DevOps Release Pipelines ? Artifacts and Stages

We had a recent forum question about Azure DevOps Release Pipelines that prompted me to look a bit into how schedules work in ?classic? release pipelines.

While Microsoft has documentation on scheduling options, I found that there are multiple places where one can set a schedule. It wasn?t completely clear to me how these schedules interacted, so I did a bit of testing.

Here is a quick summary of what I found.

How changes flow from version control to the database

In the use case in question?

The team is refreshing the database for an environment each night

There is often work in progress in the database which is not ready to deploy, and they don?t want to lose it or have to manually apply it each day

Their process is to check these changes into a branch in source control

The team would like to automate the deployment of these changes to the environment each morning, after the database has been replaced

With a CI/CD solution like SQL Change Automation for SQL Server or Redgate Change Automation for Oracle, the flow of changes from version control to deployment in Azure DevOps is to:

Build and optionally test the code in the branch and output a build artifact

Run a task in a release pipeline taking the updated build artifact as an input which creates a release artifact against the target database

This is useful in case the team wants to review the history of exactly what was in the deployment at any time

Run a task in a release pipeline to deploy the release artifact to the target database

In this case, the desired behavior is to run the release pipeline steps on a predictable timed schedule.

But where exactly do you configure the schedule?

Azure DevOps Release Pipelines Schedules: Artifact and Stages

When you work in the ?Classic? editor for a ?release? pipeline in Azure DevOps, it is possible to set a schedule in the ?Artifact? area, and it is also possible to set a schedule on the triggers for each stage.

It wasn?t 100% obvious to me how these schedules related.

After some experimentation, I have found two main things:

1) If you want the deployment to regularly kick off at a given time, you definitely want to set a schedule on the Artifact

In other words, if you set a schedule on a Stage and don?t set a schedule on the artifact, the Stage won?t run. You need a schedule on the Artifact area to kick off picking up the build artifact to start the process.

There is a helpful option on the artifact schedule to ?Only schedule releases if the source or pipeline has changed.?

2) You don?t have to set a schedule on the Stage

If you set a schedule in the Artifact area, you are free to leave the schedule blank on Stages if you would like.

In other words, each stage has a set of pre-deployment conditions, and the schedule is one of those pre-deployment conditions. You will only reach the Stage if the release itself is triggered in the first place ? so the schedule on the Stage is only ever considered after the schedule on the Artifact has been met.

Is this intuitive?

After experimenting with this, I don?t find the behavior surprising or wrong.

However, I did need to do some tests to understand the behavior, so I wouldn?t say the ?Classic? pipeline is fully intuitive in terms of scheduling. Hopefully this helps someone else out there with the same questions I had.

Azure artifacts pricing - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure artifacts pricing

[youtube]

Azure artifacts pricing Latest breaking news Azure artifacts pricing

Pay-per-GB pricing and more Azure Artifacts updates

Azure Artifacts is the one place for all of the packages, binaries, tools, and scripts your software team needs. It?s part of Azure DevOps, a suite of tools that helps teams plan, build, and ship software. For Microsoft Build 2019, we?re excited to announce some long-requested changes to the service.

Until now, a separate, additional license was required for anyone using Azure Artifacts, beyond the Azure DevOps Basic license. We heard your feedback that this was inflexible, hard to manage, and often not cost-effective, and we?ve removed it. Now, Azure Artifacts charges only for the storage you use, so that every user in your organization can access and share packages.

Every organization gets 2 GB of free storage. Additional storage usage is charged according to tiered rates starting at $2 per GB and decreasing to $0.25 per GB. Full details can be found on our pricing page.

We?ve had support for Python packages, as well as our own Universal Packages, in public preview for some time. As of now, both are generally available and ready for all of your production workloads.

If you?re developing an open source project using a public Azure Repo or a repo on GitHub, you might want to share nightly or pre-release versions of your packages with your project team. Azure Artifacts public feeds will enable you to do just that, backed by the same scale and reliability guarantees as the private feeds you use for internal development. Interested in joining the preview? Get in touch (@alexmullans on Twitter).

With Azure Artifacts, your teams can manage all of their artifacts in one place, with easy-to-configure permissions that help you share packages across the entire organization, or just with people you choose. Azure Artifacts hosts common package types:

Maven (for Java development)

npm (for Node.js and JavaScript development)

NuGet (for .NET, C#, etc. development)

Python

If none of those are what you need, Azure Artifacts provides Universal Packages, an easy-to-use and lightweight package format that can take any file or set of files and version them as a single entity. Universal Packages are fast, using deduplication to minimize the amount of content you upload to the service.

Azure Artifacts is also a symbol server. Publishing your symbols to Azure Artifacts enables engineers in the next room or on the next continent to easily debug the packages you share.

Artifacts are most commonly used as part of DevOps processes and pipelines, so we?ve naturally integrated Azure Artifacts with Azure Pipelines. It?s easy to consume and publish packages to Azure Artifacts in your builds and releases.

We?re excited for you to try Azure Artifacts. If you?ve got questions, comments, or feature suggestions, get in touch on Twitter (@alexmullans) or leave a comment.

Devops delete repository - Эдуард Кабринский

Devops delete repository

Devops delete repository Headline news Devops delete repository

How to structure DevOps related code and configs in a code repository?

We've been growing as a company, our products are expanding and our DevOps related activities and efforts are growing as well - we've switched from Bamboo to a more flexible and configurable Jenkins, using deployment pipelines and other plugins; switched to Ansible and starting to use Docker here and there internally.

All of these things require some level of coding or configuration - Ansible scripts and configs, Jenkins groovy scripts, Dockerfiles and YAML configs.

For now, we've created a separate "ops" repository with high-level directories for jenkins , ansible , docker and other (which is a terrible name, but for now all "other" DevOps automation things are there).

Our approach does not feel right and might not scale, but what are the best practices and recommendations to keep DevOps-related code in a code repository or repositories?

4 Answers 4

The current organisation of the code and configuration you describe is structured by the technical solutions involved. This is a bad design that will add a lot of overhead in our maintenance activities and will add a lot of traps in our way as well. Instead, that organisation should be structured around the artefacts we are deploying.

The reason for this is that we want to consider artefacts (e.g. a docker image or a software package) as the objects of the following verbs:

to consider a minimal set of automated tasks we want to perform. If we want to change something about how the test verb is implemented, it is easy to visit the folder corresponding to that artefact in the appropriate repository and then discover the jenkins-specific automation items that needs to be updated. Instead, if the automation recipes are structured around technical solutions, then we need to figure out of the blue that jenkins is involved in the test procedures and find there the artefact related automation items. In complex situations, the organisation around technical solutions makes updates very hard, because we have to know a priori all the technical solutions involved in some service to update them accordingly.

For instance a repository containing the code for a website and a micro-service ?a? could have the following sub-directories dedicated to operations:

each having three scripts called build , test and deploy . Now that the organisation of automation items has somehow been clarified, let's turn our attention to configuration.

The main conditions and requirements about the configuration organisation are set by the deploy verb when applied on a service-like artefact. The deploy verb should have the following parameters:

the version of the artefact to deploy,

the deployment target of the artefact, which describes the concrete environment where the deployed artefact will run (e.g. a cluster and endpoints it should talk to)

the credentials it should use to connect to other endpoints (e.g. databases)

the runtime configuration of (like how long cache entries should live, etc.)

From the operational perspective, this breakdown of the parametrisation matches the natural degrees of freedom of the deployment problem ? aside from the credentials that could be bundled with the runtime configuration, but it is better to separate them to avoid spreading them carelessly.
