<p>If you use Microsoft Teams, you can use the Azure Boards app for Microsoft Teams to create work items and monitor work item activity in your Azure Boards project from your Teams channel.</p>

<p>Add the Azure Boards app to Microsoft Teams</h2></p>
<p>You add the app to your Teams channel in Microsoft Teams.</p>
<p>Visit the App store in Microsoft Teams and search for the Azure Boards app. Upon installing, a welcome message from the app displays as shown in the following image.</p>

<p>Link your Azure Boards project to the Azure Boards app</h2></p>
<p>To use the app, you must first link your Azure Boards project to your Teams channel.</p>
<p>Once the app has been installed in your team, connect and authenticate yourself to Azure Boards. Use <strong>Sign in with different email</strong> if your Microsoft Teams and Azure Boards are in different tenants.</p>

<p>Set up subscriptions</h2></p>
<p>You can create subscriptions to monitor work items at any time using the @azure boards subscriptions command.</p>
<p>Select the desired area path, event that you are interested in, and leverage the associated filters to customize what you get notified on in your Teams channel. To help easily set up subscriptions, your recently accessed area paths are shown in the area path dropdown.</p>

<p>In case the desired area path doesn't appear in the Area path dropdown menu, follow the instructions mentioned in the next section, Add area paths. Area paths added using the @azure boards addAreapath command and area paths for which subscriptions are created in the channel always appear in the Area path dropdown along with recently accessed area paths.</p>
<p>You can add areas that your team works on to the channel so that they are always available for creating work items and subscriptions. This is key mainly for teams with more than 100 area paths in their project.</p>
<p>Use the following command to add area paths from your project to the Teams channel.</p>

<p>Search and share work items using compose extension</h2></p>
<p>To help users search and share work items, the Azure Boards app for Microsoft Teams supports compose extension. You can search for work items by work item ID or by title. For compose extension to work, users must sign in to Azure Boards app either by running @azure boards signin command or by signing into the compose extension directly.</p>

<p>Preview work item URLs</h2></p>
<p>To support collaboration around work items discussed within a channel, the channel displays a preview of work items referenced. When a user pastes the work item URL, a preview is shown similar to that in the following image. This helps to keep work item related conversations relevant and accurate.</p>

<p>Unlink a project from a channel</h2></p>
<p>A Teams channel can only link to one Azure Boards project at a time. To link to a different project, you must first unlink the current project using @azure boards unlink command.</p>
<p>Unlinking a project deletes all the subscriptions along with added area paths from the channel. If the channel has no subscriptions, any user can unlink a project. However if a channel has subscriptions, only project admins can unlink a project from a channel.</p>
<p>To logically link a set of related notifications and also to reduce the space occupied by notifications in a channel, notifications are threaded. All notifications linked to a particular work item are linked together.</p>

<p>To bring your Kanban board or Dashboard into Microsoft Teams, click the '+' ('add new tab') button on the top nav of your team channel. Find the Website icon and add the link to your Azure DevOps board or dashboard.</p>

<p>In a previous blog, we concluded that Conway’s law will prevail and that microservices are essential in a world of Enterprise DevOps. This means that anyone who is serious about DevOps should learn how to define microservices, how to manage them, how to maximize the benefits and how to minimize the issues. It is important to know how to design ideal microservices for different technologies and different use-cases. This blog gives an overview of how microservices will support the business in an optimal way.</p>
<h2><strong>What is a microservices architecture?</strong></h2>
<p>James Lewis and Martin Fowler give us the best definition of microservices architectures:</p>
<p><em>The Microservice architecture style provides an approach to building larger applications as a suite of smaller services (=IT components or Apps), where each service:</em></p>
<p><ul>
<li>Is built around a business capability</li>
<li>Runs its own process</li>
<li>Communicates via a lightweight mechanism, and</li>
<li>Is independently deployable by automated deployment machinery</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>In the end, microservices should promote business flexibility. This is achieved if new feature requests have the maximum probability of impacting only one single microservice, enabling a DevOps team to fix the problem fast, quickly re-test with automation, and re-deploy the microservice.</p>
<h2><strong>What are functional microservices?</strong></h2>
<p>Since most feature requests come from end-users, most microservices will be functionally oriented. Feature requests will usually involve changing GUI, logic, workflow, and data, so designing microservices that have all these parts in the same deployable will minimize the impact of change.</p>

<p>The design will involve much more than technical considerations. We have seen that the business process is usually the best basis for dividing a functional scope into good microservices. This, in turn, means you should involve business owners and process architects to define the architecture.</p>
<h2><strong>Do we still need technical microservices?</strong></h2>
<p>A few microservices will be more technically oriented and callable via clear and stable request-reply interfaces. When a piece of functionality should be the same for many purposes, and when it does not change very often, it can be broken out into a separate more ‘technical’ microservice.</p>
<p>Other microservices can be integration oriented for orchestrating other services, or responsible for connectivity to some other large system and/or external party. A central ESB is often replaced by distributed specialized microservices that can hold their own business data if it makes the service more efficient.</p>
<p>Companies should be open-minded about what a microservice can and should do. The best microservice architecture for one business area is not always ideal for another area. This aligns with DevOps where we mostly delegate design decisions at the team-level.</p>
<p>It’s important not to re-use too much or think that this is SOA version 2.0. We will elaborate more on this important topic in a separate blog coming soon.</p>
<h2><strong>How does a component’s size affect business agility?</strong></h2>
<p>For microservices, most people say that a DevOps team of one to 10 people should own, build, operate and manage approximately one to five microservices. Size is relatively flexible for designing microservices.</p>
<p>For small to relatively large scope, it is not necessary to split things into smaller pieces than the business is asking for. For example, the teams and the architecture can be aligned with the business functions they support, achieving maximum autonomy to evolve easily and generate value.</p>
<p>However, when the scope of the “System” is very large, it will always be better to split the functionality into separate microservices. The internal and external dependencies grow when years of time-critical fixes and short-cuts create unwanted dependencies. It’s hard to change the system, significant regression testing for every release and deployments are costly and risky.</p>

<p>The ideal size of a microservice is related to the number of developers. This means that HPA platforms have an advantage over open source because they can split later, have larger microservices, or have smaller teams.</p>
<h2><strong>What is <u>not</u> a microservice?</strong></h2>
<p>Having promoted a flexible view on microservices it makes sense to compare with what is <u>not</u> a microservice:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Monoliths are not microservices because they are too large. They require development teams of more than 10 people and (usually) have many functionally separate processes in the same deployable. This requires more regression testing and longer release cycles. Dependencies grow with size and over time, and they are not explicit via service calls as they are with microservices architectures.</li>
<li>Layered SOA Architectures where the Business Data is below the ESB are also not microservices. They do not contain required data and functionality for a business function in the same deployable. Instead, almost every business feature stretches across several technically focused “layers” of shared deployable units. According to NGINX: “<em>SOA is built on the concept of a share-as-much-as-possible architecture style, while microservices are built on the concept of a share-as-little-as-possible architecture style.”</em>Microservices should be autonomous and fulfill a business function so they have GUI, logic, workflow and a database to store things when they need to.</li>

<h2><strong>Our view: Common characteristics for microservices</strong></h2>
<p>Microservices fulfill a business function and communicate with each other as part of the regular business process, making them easier to understand for non-technical people; This is a good thing for DevOps and team-decisions. In our view, good microservices should have the following common characteristics:</p>
<p><strong>1. Process oriented</strong></p>
<p>Functional microservices usually implement a phase of the business process or a full business function. The name “service” is misleading. The microservice can be a callable service, but it can also be an app that focuses on end-user functionality.</p>
<p><strong>2. Autonomous and flexible</strong></p>
<p>Microservices should be developed separately, deployed separately and contain their own data. They should be evolving in time and easy to change and re-deploy.</p>
<p><strong>3. Automation and control</strong></p>
<p>Microservices should have good test and deployment automation, error handling, monitoring and alerting, and should allow feedback from users.</p>
<p><strong>4. Right-sized</strong></p>
<p>“Micro” is also somewhat misleading, microservices should not be too small or too large. The service can be relatively large with up to 10 developers. It is smaller than a monolith, but it does not have to be smaller than a normal app. If using a high-productivity platform like Mendix, a microservice can almost be a core system of a medium sized company.</p>
<h2><strong>What will microservices mean for you?</strong></h2>
<p>Microservices, if done correctly, promote business and IT alignment and improve flexibility in the operational processes. With previous paradigms, it has been very difficult to change business processes, so digitization has been very difficult for most incumbents. DevOps and microservices architecture solves this problem by localizing the decisions and the development: The DevOps team is working directly with the business and is autonomous to take decisions. The microservices are developed separately, with minimal dependencies, and they are deployed separately as autonomous units.</p>

<p>Couple of days ago I was trying to provision my Release Definitions variables in my VSTS/TFS projects via PowerShell. As this turned out not to be a trivial Web-Request and as some of the calls I discovered are not yet documented, I decided to share my findings with you.</p>
<p>In the following lines I?ll show you a couple of cmdlets that will allow you to manipulate all of the variables in your Release Definition, those on the definition level, environment specific ones and also variable groups.</p>
<p>For the purpose of adding Release definition, Environment level variables and relating Variable Groups I wrote the following cmdlet:</p>
<p>Don?t get scared by the number of parameters, or apparent complexity of the cmdlet. I?ll quickly explain those parameters, usage and the expected result.</p>
<p>Let?s start with some why?s. As you can see, in the BEGIN block of my cmdlet (which is triggered once per a pipeline invocation) I retrieve the given build definition, in the PROCESS block I add the desired variables (hopefully from the pipeline) then in the END block I persist all of the changes.</p>
<p>If you are unfamiliar with Windows PowerShell Cmdlet Lifecycle, please consult the following article Windows PowerShell: The Advanced Function Lifecycle.</p>
<p>This is intentional, as I want to have a single call to the API for all of the added variables. In this way in the history of the build definition there will be a single entry for all of the variables we added, no matter the number of them. Otherwise, we would persist the changes for each of the variables and our history would be messy.</p>

<p>If structured differently, we may see a history entry on per each variable that we do add. This obviously applies only if you are trying to add multiple variable in one go.</p>
<p>Following would be a simple invocation to add a single variable into one of our environments defined in a release template:</p>
<p>The above command will add a variable named Mario2 with a value 1 in the DEV environment, defined in the definition with id 23. It will also reference the variable group that has id 25.</p>
<p>Following would be the result:</p>

<p>In case you would like to add multiple variables in one go, create an array of PSCustomObject with the following properties:</p>
<p>This will add two variables to the environment called DEV in your Release Definition and two more variables on the Release Definition level. As you can guess, if we omit the environment name, the variables will be added on the Release Definition level. The last variable, var4, is also marked as secret, meaning that once added will not be visible to the user. Also in this case, we will have only a single entry in the change history as a single call to the REST API will be made.</p>
<p>Other options you can specify are:</p>
<p><ul>
<li><strong>Reset</strong> ? By setting this switch only the variables that are not passed in the invocation, but are present on the Release definition, will be removed.</li>
<li><strong>Comment</strong> ? In case you want a custom message to be visualized in the history for this change, you can specify it here.</li>
<li><strong>VariableGroups</strong> ? An integer array indicating id?s of the variable groups you wish to link to the Release definition</li>
</ul>
</p>
<p>In case you are using variable groups you can create those via following cmdlet:</p>
<p>This cmdlet will look for the given group and if it exists it will update it with the values you pass in. In case the variable group (matched by name) doesn?t exist, and if the -Force switch is selected, it will create a new group. Working principle is the same as for Add-EnvironmentVariable cmdlet. At the end, it will return the Variable Group Id that you can use later for Add-EnvironmentVariable cmdlet and reference it.</p>

<h1>An Example Azure DevOps Release Pipeline for PowerShell modules</h1>
<h2>Introduction</h2>
<p>In the previous post I went over an example Azure DevOps Build Pipeline for PowerShell modules. This post will continue from where we left off and discuss the Azure DevOps Release Pipeline for PowerShell modules.</p>
<p>I?ll go over the different stages, and explain how the PowerShell modules are released to multiple internal Artifact feeds.</p>
<h2>Azure DevOps Release Pipeline</h2>
<p>First, let?s look at the example Azure DevOps Release Pipeline for my PowerShell module. My Azure DevOps project visibility is public for all to see, so you shouldn?t be prompted for a login.</p>
<p>The purpose of this Release Pipeline is to take Artifacts from the Build Pipeline, and release them to a stage. Here?s an example release showing deployments to all three stages (Dev, Test, and Prod).</p>

<h3>Artifacts</h3>
<p>In the Release section above you can see the PowerShellPipeline Artifacts appear under the Continuous deployment heading. This shows a Release is triggered every time a Build Pipeline creates those Artifacts.</p>
<h3>Dev Stage</h3>
<p>We now move on to the stages. Note there is a line between Artifacts and the Dev stage, due to a Pre-deployment condition trigger set to After release:</p>

<p>This setting ensures the Dev stage is triggered automatically without user intervention.</p>
<h3>Test Stage</h3>

<h3>Prod Stage</h3>

<p>This gives us the option to manually validate the Dev and Test environments are working as expected before we release to Prod.</p>
<h2>Stage Tasks</h2>
<p style="clear: both">All stages use roughly the same tasks, but let?s take a closer look into Prod: <img style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 5px 0;" src="https://adamrushuk.github.io/assets/images/powershell-release-pipeline/stage-tasks.png" /></p>
<h3>Install NuGet</h3>
<p>The Install NuGet task is self-explanatory, and simply installs the specified NuGet binary version. NuGet is required to publish PowerShell modules to our internal Artifact feed.</p>
<h3>Additional Integration Tests for Prod Environment</h3>
<p>This task is a placeholder for actual test code, just to highlight you <em>could</em> run integration tests at this point if required. This might include provisioning infrastructure, loading data, then running tests and publishing the test results.</p>
<h3>Publish Module to Artifact Feed (prod)</h3>
<p>The final task is responsible for running a PowerShell script called Publish-AzDOArtifactFeed.ps1 , which takes two parameters: AzDOArtifactFeedName and AzDOPat :</p>

<h1>Azure DevOps Processes Part 4: Overview of the Agile Process</h1>
<p>There are two process which are based on the agile methodology within Azure DevOps. The Agile and Scrum processes are similar but there are key differences which I?ve mentioned in my previous blog introducing the Azure DevOps processes. This blog specifically aims to provide an overview of the agile process.</p>
<p>The agile process is based on agile principles and allows users to track user stories and tasks at a more granular level than the Scrum process.</p>
<p>The work items of note which are available as a part of the agile process are:</p>
<p>Epic: Epics within the Agile process are the same as Epics within the Basic and CMMI process. Epics contain the high level process of what is to be delivered. An example of this would be the delivery of different channels e.g phone or chat within a call centre.</p>
<p>Feature: Features are a grouping of functionality that provides business value when delivered. The Feature work item is the same as when used in a CMMI process. E.g telephony integration and call verification features would be required in order to deliver an epic related to the delivery of a telephone channel in a call centre.</p>
<p>User Story: User Stories work items are meant to capture the description of what is expected from the end user. User stories are typically captured in the format: As a [user role], I want [goal] so that [defined reason]. The user story work item also prompts for the acceptance criteria to be defined. The acceptance criteria documented in the user story is extremely important, as testers and developers rely on what is documented here to create test cases and solution designs.</p>
<p style="clear: both"> <img style="float: left; margin: 0 10px 5px 0;" src="https://triciasinclairdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2020/02/image.png" />User Story Work Item</p>
<p>Task: As with the CMMI process, a task defines what needs to be completed in order to complete the user story. An example of a task which could be associated with the above requirement could be to create the credit limit field on the contact record. (Assuming you?re using a CDS database the name, address and date of birth fields should already exist).</p>
<p>Issue: The Issue work item in the agile process has the same purpose as the work item in the CMMI process. It relates to project related problems, allowing a resolution and plan to be available and visible to those within the project that need to have access to the information.</p>
<p>Some of the key fields to be aware of within the agile process are:</p>
<p><ul>
<li>Story Points ? Story Points are associated to user stories to indicates the effort needed to complete the user story. Populating this field allows the velocity to be tracked and enables the standard forecasting functionality.</li>

You typically use a technology like Ansible, Chef, or Puppet to automate the provisioning of software. Your whole Cloud infrastructure (instances, volumes, networking, IPs) can be described in terraform.</p>
<p>In this course you?ll learn how to use terraform to automate your infrastructure. I will first show you the basics of terraform and will then explain how to automate infrastructure on AWS using terraform. You can open an AWS account for free to do the labs.
