Azure devops and github - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure devops and github

[youtube]

Azure devops and github Current news stories Azure devops and github

Trigger GitHub actions with Azure DevOps Pipelines

DDDPerth?s website team are in the midst of a site refresh. There are many goals guiding the refresh but a significant one was gaining insight, and improving, our performance and accessibility.

A convenient method to gather these metrics is an automated step within the CD process. There?s a few services to choose from but we opted for Lighthouse-CI. It has a GitHub Action, making setup quick and easy, and Lighthouse scores provided the desired metrics. With that settled, how would this work in our pipeline?

From GitHub?s documentation:

You can use this endpoint to trigger a webhook event called repository_dispatch when you want activity that happens outside of GitHub to trigger a GitHub Actions workflow or GitHub App webhook.

Perfect. The POST endpoint is /repos/:owner/:repo/dispatches . Replacing :owner and :repo for your GitHub username and repository name. The endpoint requires an event_type string parameter, this is the name of the event. There?s also an optional client_payload JSON object parameter if you want to send extra information. Say for configurable Actions.

Configure the action

The repo?s actions will live in the workflows directory and have a YAML configuration file. Setting the on attribute to repository_dispatch enables the action to be triggered when the repository dispatch event endpoint is called.

With the on event defined it?s possible to test at this point by hitting that endpoint in an application like Postman. If successful you should see the Action in the repo?s workflow run page.

Azure DevOps

DDDPerth?s build pipelines are in Azure DevOps but if you?re able to call a REST endpoint then you?ll be able to achieve the same in other systems.

Calling a rest endpoint in Azure

Navigate to your build tasks and, if you don?t yet have an agentless job, you?ll need to add one. Select the three dots and choose ?Add an agentless job?.

Azure DevOps task interface. Drop down menu showing three options. The last being Add an agentless job

Add a task to your agentless job, choosing ?Invoke REST API?.

Configure REST API task

We need to authenticate to the GitHub API. A good way to do this is creating a generic service connection for the GitHub API (https://api.github.com/).

The account that has at least write access to the repository is the username. The password will be a personal access token you create. Read through GitHub?s documentation for personal access tokens. The scope, or permission, of the token needs to be public_repo .

The remaining settings set the method to POST, the content-type header as application/json and the body to have the required event_type parameter.

Invoke REST API interface showing DDDPerth's setup for calling GitHub dispatch event endpoint

With this task in your pipeline it will now trigger the GitHub action each time the task runs. In the case of DDDPerth that means Lighthouse-ci tests are run during each deployment.

Add GitHub action

Action?s on event: on: [repository_dispatch]

Agentless Job in Azure DevOps build task

Invoke REST API task

GitHub Access Token with scope public_repo

POST https://api.github.com/repos/:owner/:repo/dispatches

Content-Type: ?application/json?

Body:

Thanks

I did not go into this with experience of Azure DevOps. So thanks to my DDDPerth teammates, Rob Moore and Mo Zaatar for pairing with me on the Azure side. And to those that gave valuable input when I asked on Twitter, Amy Kapers and Edward Thomson.

Software Delivery

Learn to better software delivery process with the help of agile engineering practices like continuous delivery, test driven development, behavior driven development, continuous integration, deployment automation among others

Tag Archives: continuous software development

How do you better your software delivery process?

Do you feel that you could get more value from your outsourced IT teams? Are you dissatisfied with the factory models of IT outsourced teams? Do you struggle with time to market, lack of visibility and software quality issues?

If you do, this video is a must watch. Recently a survey published by a leading global consulting firm indicated that more than 80% of the delivery organizations in India resort only to stand up meetings as their form of agile. How about your teams?

While true agile development can add tremendous value to your business, the real possibilities are not yet exploited. The factory models of IT outsourcing is a blocker to keeping up with your changing business needs. Many firms are unaware about the alternates to these code factories.

There are only very few organizations who can execute the whole spectrum of agile successfully all the way to continuous delivery on your outsourced projects to ensure business success. And, there are fewer who could provide agile offshore delivery at scale with repeated success.

With this video, we have explained how new engineering practices like continuous delivery could help you align your IT to business, build software faster with assured quality via transparent development and early feedback.

Explore the value of continuous delivery: Move from a code factory to an agile pit stop

Watch this 5 minute video that provides you the insights into how the new continuous delivery practices at offshore benefits your project. A series of videos will follow, so please watch this space for more.

At the end of this video, you will gain:

A right perspective of agile away from the wide spread notion as a project management method.

The differences between traditional and agile in terms of engineering practices.

How you could save the projects at offshore by embracing continuous delivery.

How you could fundamentally re-engineer the way you build software to deliver tremendous business value ? moving away from a code factory to an agile pit stop.

Vsts git repository - Эдуард Кабринский

Vsts git repository

Vsts git repository Today's news headlines in english Vsts git repository

Connect to git repository in TFS or Visual Studio Online

I have created a git repository at team foundation services, and I want to connect to it, but I don't know its URL and annoyingly can't find it.

I created my local repo and dit my initial commit

Now I wonder what remote I should set. I named my repo myproject.mysubproject on the foundation services website.

I tried https://mysubdomain.visualstudio.com/my ... subproject and https://mysubdomain.visualstudio.com/my ... roject.git , but for both, no cigar, and I'm pretty much out of ideas now. Does anyone know where I will be able to find the repo?

Edit: As a side note: I'm not working from visual studio, nor do I want to for this project (but I will for other projects)

2 Answers 2

If you go to the web UI, under the "code" hub, if it's empty repo, the clone url will be there. If it's not empty there is an icon to the right (double paper icon) that will drop down with the clone url.

The url will be in the form .

Also note that it's the same URL that's in your web browser if you browse to that projects code hub.

However, note in the last release, we added multiple repos per project. For the initial repo, the repo name matches the project so project name isn't required in the url. For additional repos, projectName may be required:

But once again, using the web UI is the easiest way to get the url.

Once you have that url you can simply run git clone [url]

For authentication, VSO recently added PAT tokens. You can use any username and the PAT token as the password. See more here This is not available for on-prem TFS yet.

You can also use Alternate Credentials: see more here

Using Git submodules in (private) Azure DevOps repositories

I often use Git Submodules in my repositories, it?s a handy way to have external source code in your repo, without having to worry much about the external updates and source management (you can just checkout, pull etc as every normal git repo).

Often the external sources are hosted in public GitHub repos, without any need to authenticate.
You create .gitmodules file look like:?

And with a few more command you are ready to go.

Lastly I wanted to use submodules between my private Azure DevOps repositories in the same Azure DevOps Project.
So I added the submodule with its full path, like:

But during the runs of my YAML Multi-Staged Pipelines (I love them!) I was getting the following error:

After reading the Azure DevOps documentation I noticed this sentence: ?Added by using a URL relative to the main repository?
So I changed the path of the submodule relative to the main repository, like:

After this change, everything was working fine!

Azure devops build artifacts - Эдуард Кабринский

Azure devops build artifacts

[youtube]

Azure devops build artifacts News update Azure devops build artifacts

Overview of artifacts in Azure Pipelines

In Microsoft Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2018 and previous versions, build and release pipelines are called definitions, runs are called builds, service connections are called service endpoints, stages are called environments, and jobs are called phases.

You can publish and consume many different types of packages and artifacts with Azure Pipelines. Your continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline can publish specific package types to their respective package repositories (NuGet, npm, Python, and so on). Or you can use build artifacts and pipeline artifacts to help store build outputs and intermediate files between build steps. You can then add onto, build, test, or even deploy those artifacts.

Aside from being published, Build and Release artifacts will be available as long as that Build or Release is retained unless otherwise specified. For more information on retaining Build and Release artifacts, see the Retention Policy documentation.

Supported artifact types

The following table describes supported artifact types in Azure Pipelines.

Supported artifact types

Description

Build artifacts

Build artifacts are the files that you want your build to produce. Build artifacts can be nearly anything that your team needs to test or deploy your app. For example, you've got .dll and .exe executable files and a .PDB symbols file of a .NET or C++ Windows app.

Pipeline artifacts

You can use pipeline artifacts to help store build outputs and move intermediate files between jobs in your pipeline. Pipeline artifacts are tied to the pipeline that they're created in. You can use them within the pipeline and download them from the build, as long as the build is retained. Pipeline artifacts are the new generation of build artifacts. They take advantage of existing services to dramatically reduce the time it takes to store outputs in your pipelines. Only available in Azure DevOps Services.

Maven

You can publish Maven artifacts to Azure Artifacts feeds or Maven repositories.

npm

You can publish npm packages to Azure Artifacts or npm registries.

NuGet

You can publish NuGet packages to Azure Artifacts, other NuGet services (like NuGet.org), or internal NuGet repositories.

PyPI

You can publish Python packages to Azure Artifacts or PyPI repositories.

Symbols

Symbol files contain debugging information for compiled executables. You can publish symbols to symbol servers. Symbol servers enable debuggers to automatically retrieve the correct symbol files without knowing specific product, package, or build information.

Universal

Universal Packages store one or more files together in a single unit that has a name and version. Unlike pipeline artifacts that reside in the pipeline, Universal Packages reside within a feed in Azure Artifacts.

Build and Release artifacts will be available as long as that Build or Release run is retained, unless you specify how long to retain the artifacts. For more information on retaining Build and Release artifacts, see the Retention Policy documentation.

Defining Agile Operations and DevOps

I recently read a great blog post by Scott Wilson that was talking about the definitions of Agile Operations, DevOps, and related terms. (Read the comments too, there?s some good discussion.) From what I?ve heard so far, there are a bunch of semi-related terms people are using around this whole ?new thing of ours.?

The first is DevOps, which has two totally different frequently used definitions.

1. Developers and Ops working closely together ? the ?hugs and collaboration? definition

2. Operations folks uptaking development best practices and writing code for system automation

The second is Agile Operations, which also has different meanings.

1. Same as DevOps, whichever definition of that I?m using

2. Using agile principles to run operations ? process techniques, like iterative development or even kanban/TPS kinds of process stuff. Often with a goal of ?faster!?

3. Using automation ? version control, automatic provisioning/control/monitoring. Sometimes called ?Infrastructure Automation? or similar.

This leads to some confusion, as most of these specific elements can be implemented in isolation. For example, I think the discussion at OpsCamp about ?Is DevOps an antipattern? was predicated on an assumption that DevOps meant only DevOps definition #2, ?ops guys trying to be developers,? and made the discussion somewhat odd to people with other assumed definitions.

I have a proposed set of definitions. To explain it, let?s look at Agile Development and see how it?s defined.

Agile development, according to wikipedia and the agile manifesto, consists of a couple different ?levels? of thing. To sum up the wikipedia breakdown,

Agile Principles ? like ?business/users and developers working together.? These are the core values that inform agile, like collaboration, people over process, software over documentation, and responding to change over planning.

Agile Methods ? specific process types. Iterations, Lean, XP, Scrum. ?As opposed to waterfall.?

Agile Practices ? techniques often found in conjunction with agile development, not linked to a given method flavor, like test driven development, continuous integration, etc.

I believe the different parts of Agile Operations that people are talking about map directly to these three levels.

Agile Operations Principles includes things like dev/ops collaboration (DevOps definition 1 above); things like James Turnbull?s 4-part model seem to be spot on examples of trying to define this arena.

Agile Operations Methods includes process you use to conduct operations ? iterations, kanban, stuff you?d read in Visible Ops; Agile Operations definition #2 above.

Agile Operations Practices includes specific techniques like automated build/provisioning, monitoring, anything you?d have a ?toolchain? for. This contains DevOps definition #2 and Agile Operations definition #3 above.

I think it?s helpful to break them up along the same lines as agile development, however, because in the end some of those levels should merge once developers understand ops is part of system development too? There shouldn?t be a separate ?user/dev collaboration? and ?dev/ops collaboration,? in a properly mature model it should become a ?user/dev/ops collaboration,? for example.

I think the dev2ops guys? ?People over Process over Tools? diagram mirrors this about exactly ? the people being one of the important agile principles, process being a large part of the methods, and tools being used to empower the practices.

What I like about that diagram, and why I want to bring this all back to the Agile Manifesto discussion, is that the risk of having various sub-definitions increases the risk that people will implement the processes or tools without the principles in mind, which is definitely an antipattern. The Agile guys would tell you that iterations without collaboration is likely to not work out real well.

And it happens in agile development too ? there are some teams here at my company that have adopted the methods and/or tools of agile but not its principles, and the results are suboptimal.

Therefore I propose that ?Agile Operations? is an umbrella term for all these things, and we keep in mind the principles/methods/practices differentiation.

If we want to call the principles ?devops? for short and some of the practices ?infrastructure automation? for short I think that would be fine? Although dev/ops collaboration is ONE of the important principles ? but probably not the entirety; and infrastructure automation is one of the important practices, but there are probably others.
