Devops Made Easy

In the previous article, we saw the Urban Code Deploy server installation on Ubuntu 18.04. Here is its link. https://devopsmadeeasy.com/urban-code-d ... ntu-18-04/
In this post we will see the Urban Code Deploy agent installation on Ubuntu 18.04 and for that we are going to use the same machine on which we have installed UCD server earlier.

Following are the 3 steps that we are going to perform in this post:

Step1: Start UCD server and access the UCD web UI console

Before we start UCD agent installation, we have to make sure that UCD server is up and running. If the UCD server is not yet started, use the below commands to start the UCD server.

Verify whether the UCD server java process is up and http, https ports are listening.

Access the UCD console using http://publicip:8080 and be on the dashboard.

Step2: Download the UCD agent installation zip file

In order to download the UCD agent installation zip file, click on the icon present at the top right side of UCD console and go to ?Tools?. Now we have 3 different tools zip files available to download and install. As we would like to install ?UCD agent?, right click on ?UrbanCode Deploy Agent?(1st tool) and click on ?Copy Link Location? as shown in the below slide(2nd image).

Now after copying the link location, I?m using wget command to download the UCD agent zip file as shown below. If you are getting any SSL error while downloading the zip file, add ?no-check-certificate to wget command and download the zip file.

Unzip the downloaded zip file using the command unzip ucd-agent.zip

Step3: UCD agent installation

After unzipping, a folder with the name ucd-agent-install will get created on the server. Similar to install-server.sh script which we have used to install and configure UCD server, to install and configure a ucd agent we have a script install-agent.sh. Let us run this script and install UCD agent on the server.

Similar to UCD server installation, we will use all the defaults while installing UCD agent and you can see the below video to install UCD agent with the defaults. After agent is installed successfully, we have to start the agent using the below commands and ensure that agent process has been started as seen in the video.

Let us validate whether the agent is successfully added to UCD server by logging into UCD console. Go to Resources ? Agents and check whether the agent is online. If the agent that was added is online then our installation and configuration is successful.

Concluding this article, we have completed Urban Code Agent installation on Ubuntu 18.04 and we will deploy a sample application using Urban Code Deploy in the next article. Here is its link https://devopsmadeeasy.com/deploy-sampl ... de-deploy/

Hope you are able to follow the steps mentioned in the article and installed the Urban Code Deploy agent successfully on ubuntu machine.

Service connection azure devops - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Service connection azure devops

[youtube]

Service connection azure devops Top news today Service connection azure devops

Update Azure Active Directory Service Principal credentials

For some reason it?s not straight-forward to create new credentials for an existing Service Principal account in Azure Active Directory using PowerShell.

I?m using PowerShell, because I?m not an Azure AD admin in my current organization, but as a developer, I am able to create and manage service principal accounts. This is extremely convenient, because we use them for automated deployments to Azure.

We started using Azure DevOps release management about a year ago, and thus I recently encountered the first credential expiration of a service principal that was used by Azure DevOps to deploy resources to Azure. This makes sense, because service principal credential lifetime defaults to one year.

A deployment which worked earlier today just failed with the error message

AADSTS7000222: The provided client secret keys are expired.

Checking the Service connection in Azure DevOps showed the same error:

Verify Connection failed because the client secret keys are expired

OK, so just create new credentials, and then update the Service Connection in Azure DevOps.

But that?s not as easy as I would like it to be.

Luckily, finding the Service Principal is easy. The Service Connection window in Azure DevOps (the screenshot above) contains the Service Principal?s ?Application ID?. Now, it?s not called that in the screenshot, because the Application ID, Client ID, and many other names mean the same thing when talking about Azure AD.

But take the ?Service principal client ID? from the above window, and run this PowerShell command:

That returns the details about the ServicePrincipals credentials:

Alright, so it expired a few days ago. Then let?s create a new one.

First get the Service Principal into a PowerShell object:

$sp = Get-AzADServicePrincipal -ApplicationId d33bc064-f562-4a7c-99db-643aca6a86c0

Then create new credentials:

$newcredential = New-AzADSpCredential -ServicePrincipalObject $sp

This creates a new password for the service principal, but you?ll never know the password, because it?s secret.

And the above command to list the credentials shows that a new credential has been created:

So $newcredential contains the new password, but since it?s secret how do you get to it?

There?s a reason that the .NET SecureString type is unpopular with the security community. You can get to it with two lines of .NET code. And with PowerShell you can just write them at the prompt:

At this point, $UnsecureSecret contains the clear-text password.

Paste the password into the Update Service Connection window in Azure DevOps, hit the Verify link, and then save it.

Now you have updated the Service Principal credentials that your Azure DevOps Service Connection uses.

Get the Application ID from the ?Update Service Connection? window?s ?Service principal client ID? field.

Run this in a PowerShell prompt where you have the Az module and you are signed in to Azure:

Output $UnsecureSecret and copy/paste it to the ?Service Princpal Key? field in Azure DevOps

Hi! Can't find any category for DevOps, Pipelines or anything similar (please fix this, it's horrible that there is no category for such a big product? If I'm just blind, I apologize for that.), so I put it under this category, move if it is wrong.

I'm using Pipelines in DevOps Services and I'm trying to figure out how much it will cost and what limitations that apply to me.

I only have 1 release pipeline, it consists of 1 job with 3 tasks, the entire job runs on a Deployment Group that contains a number of physical machines with the "azagent" installed on it (insert link to deployment group docs). All of these machines are on physical machines I own, not VMs on azure. All the pipeline does is fetch artifacts from TeamCity and then run IIS deployments and nuget package installation on the machines.

Now I've tried to read this: (insert link to parallel jobs docs) to understand exactly what applies in my scenario but can't really confirm since I can't see my actual usage anywhere. It says that deployment group jobs do not consume parallel jobs.

Now Pipelines obviously needs to coordinate the deployments by communicating with the agents on the machines, but does this use up any of the resources that have a time limit or cost related to them? Is all this considered to run on "self-hosted"? I'm still unsure since it says my 1 free Microsoft-hosted has used 0/1800 minutes (fair enough) but it also doesn't show any active jobs on my included self-hosted job when I run a deployment. Hence my confusion.

Does this mean that I can run as many deployment jobs as I wish in parallel, to as many agents as I want in my deployment groups, for free?

Azure devops npm - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops npm

[youtube]

Azure devops npm Latest news update Azure devops npm

Azure devops npm

by Caleb Smith • July 25, 2019

A few months back, I decided to put together an internal Vue UI kit that I could reuse for some of our client projects. We learned that we almost always used the same components with the same templating style, so it made sense to create our own package to keep it easy and reusable. We ran into a few problems:

It was tough to find solid examples of setting up and connecting to a private NPM package (specifically for Azure DevOps).

There were a lot of different ways to initialize our UI kit in Vue ? it was tough to find a way that was simple for our purposes.

In this post, we are going to look at setting up your first private NPM package on Azure DevOps and how to use it in your project. We are going to make a few assumptions:

Your NPM package is pretty simple and self-contained for the sake of simplicity.

You already have an Azure DevOps account setup.

This is not your first Vue or JS project with NPM.

Note: You can setup a private NPM and consume it other package registries, including GitHub and NPM itself. Most of these instructions will still apply.

Initializing Your Package

If you do not have NPM initialized, let?s start there with the npm init command. Be sure to follow the instructions through this process as this is what will be saved to the registry. I recommend using a low version for your first release. You should now have a package.json file that looks like the below.

Let?s tweak it just a little bit by removing the scripts object, adding in an author, change the main to a new spot, and add a files array. I also like to the contributors ? even if it?s only an internal package. It?s nice to recognize who has had a hand in creating something you will use everyday. Azure DevOps will also add this info and pull in the profile of users in your system, if they can be found. You should now have something like the below.

We prefer to namespace all of our internal packages using a common prefix, like ?@devsquared?. This makes it easy to keep tabs of custom integrations and it keeps everything together in your package.json file.

The files array is a lot of folders and files that you want to include in your NPM publish. It?s common to have a bunch of documents, build files, config files, etc. in your development environment. Most of the time you do not need to share those and they just add more space to final package ? keep it as lean as you can while also delivering everything that you will need for development in your other projects.

Preparing Azure DevOps

Azure DevOps refers to their NPM/Nuget registries as ?artifacts? and are shared across every project ? from a UI standpoint. My recommendation would be create a new project for your NPM packages, since you will want to add this to your Git repositories anyway. On the left-side nav, you will see an option for Artifacts ? click on that and then ?Create a New Feed? in the toolbar. Go ahead and name your feed (I.E. ? ORGANIZATION NPM) and click Create.

Next, click on Connect to Feed in the toolbar, then click on NPM. You should now see a screen like below.

Connect to Feed -> NPM

I have found it easiest to handle authentication with the NPM Feed through the .npmrc file, but there are also ways to handle authentication as a Windows user and as CI build server. You can read up on more information through the official documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ ... bs=windows

In your NPM package folder, we will add a new file called .npmrc that will look similar to below. You can find this information by clicking on ?Generate npm credentials? in the Connect to Feed modal.

Publishing to Azure DevOps

We have our code ready to be pushed to the Registry! Going forward ? we will make our first release, and all future updates, using the command npm publish . You will need to make sure that all publishes going forward have a different version number ? NPM will throw an error in case you forget.

Using Your New NPM Package

Your NPM package is now live and privately available as long as you are authenticated. For this demo, we will continue using the same .npmrc file above in our existing project to pull in our package, but you can also continue using any authentication setup mentioned in the Microsoft Documentation.

In our existing project, we will add our .npmrc file at the root level. Next, just install your package like any other NPM package: npm install @devsquared/calebs-demo --save . If you are not authenticated, you will receive an error that the package was not found.

If we import/require the package in our existing project (IE ? import from '@devsquared/calebs-demo' ), it will start off by using the entry JS file, which we marked above as src/index.js . This would be the equivalent of importing the file directly (IE ? import from './src/index.js' ). It?s highly recommended that all of the code in your NPM package go through this single file to keep it altogether and simple to use.

Wrap-up

You are now good to go to start using your first private NPM package! There is a lot more that you can do with packages in Azure DevOps, like delete old versions, mark packages as deprecated, or even see how often your packages are being downloaded and used across the organization.

Next, we will look at creating a Vue-specific NPM package that is ready to be consumed by any existing application.

Azure devops branch policies - Кабринский Эдуард

Azure devops branch policies

[youtube]

Azure devops branch policies Current news Azure devops branch policies

Azure DevOps and cross-repo branch policies

In the webcast we had this Monday for Microsoft Western Europe about using Azure DevOps for managing Dynamics 365 Business Central projects, when talking about the best practice to set policies for your branches, there was an interesting question: can I create cross-repositories branch policies? Also programmatically? I?ve partially answered the question and this post aims to be a more complete answer.

In an Azure DevOps repository you can create different branches and for every branch you can set a branch policy. This is extremely recommended for protecting your branches and in my opinion it?s a must to do always.

To create a policy for a particular branch, select your branch and then go to the Branch policies menu:

Here you can set different policies that will be applied to the branch, like reviewers, approvers, build policy and so on:

I?ve to admit that this is my preferred way of work ??

But what about creating a cross-repo policy, that will be automatically applied to all branches for your project?

You can do that by going to Project settings in Azure DevOps and then select Cross-repo policies (under Repos):

Here you can add a branch protection. You can select to protect the default branch of each repository or to protect current and future branches matching a specified pattern. For example, by inserting * I?m creating a policy for all the branches in my project:

By applying a name-based pattern you can for example create a branch protections for all master branches in the project, anotherpolicy for all develop branches in the project and another one for all release/* branches. Quite useful isn?t it?

But what about setting Azure DevOps policies programmatically? Here it was my missing response. I?ve suggested using the Azure DevOps APIs but after a bit of consulting with the Azure community now I know that there?s a more easy way: using the Azure CLI.

With the Azure CLI you can use the az repos policy command (and its options) to create branch policies. How to do that?

First, I?ve installed (or updated) the Azure CLI with this Powershell command:

Then I?ve added the azure-devops extension:

Then, I?ve select the organization and the project where I want to work (setted as default):

Now I list the IDs and names of the repositories that I have in my project:

As you can see, I have two repos here:

Then, for each repos ID I set the policy by using the az repos policy command. For the various option to set, please refer to this link. As an example, here I?m creating a policy for requiring a minimum of 1 approver in the master branch of each repo:

The policy is created:

In this way you can programmatically create policies for each repo in your organization very quickly. New thing learned ??

In the webcast we had this Monday for Microsoft Western Europe about using Azure DevOps for managing Dynamics 365 Business Central projects, when talking about the best practice to set policies for your branches, there was an interesting question: can I create cross-repositories branch policies? Also programmatically? I've partially answered the question and this post…

Azure DevOps Repos with Sourcetree ? Adding working authentication

How to fix authentication in Sourcetree with Azure Repos

You will try, and think you are not successful, but you are really near from it ! follow with me:

I am using SourceTree for Windows version 3.2.6

1- Tools -> Options -> Authentication

2- Remove all Visual Studio (or DevOps). Click Ok.

3- Close SouceTree completely. I closed Visual Studio as well, just in case !

3.5 ? I switched to DevOps format from Organization settings in DevOps website. So, if you want to follow exactly what I did, do it. Currently it is possible to return back to old format xxx.visualstudio.com. It is your decision !

4- Open SourceTree, go again to Tools -> Options -> Authentication.

6- Prepare your new Personal Access Token, then click ?Refresh Personal Access Token? button. Ensure you have this token saved somewhere TEMPORARILY because we will need it.

7- Enter your email as username, and the just generated PAT as password.

It will tell you it failed, do not worry it did not !

8- Click Ok then Close SourceTree Completely.

9- Remove the password cache file called ?passwd? in ?C:\Users\<YOUR_USER_NAME>\AppData\Local\Atlassian\SourceTree?.

10- Open sourcetree again. You can go again to Authentication of SourceTree and see your account has actually been added !

11- Ensure that your repository setting of your git is correctly formatted (https://dev.azure.com/YourOrgName/Project/_git/??)

12- You will notice a new password window shows up asking for password, Enter the same Token which you used it earlier. Note that this password will be cached. You might get the same window when you Fetch anther repository. That is why we saved the token temporarily.

13- Fetch your repos, it should work now. Congratulations !

14- Do not forget to remove the TEMPORARILY saved token (if you saved it somewhere) which can be stolen and used to access your account. I mean that copy-pasted token.

Vsts cherry pick - Эдуард Кабринский

Vsts cherry pick

[youtube]

Vsts cherry pick Breaking news Vsts cherry pick

Git Cherry Pick

git cherry-pick is a powerful command that enables arbitrary Git commits to be picked by reference and appended to the current working HEAD. Cherry picking is the act of picking a commit from a branch and applying it to another. git cherry-pick can be useful for undoing changes. For example, say a commit is accidently made to the wrong branch. You can switch to the correct branch and cherry-pick the commit to where it should belong.

When to use git cherry pick

git cherry-pick is a useful tool but not always a best practice. Cherry picking can cause duplicate commits and many scenarios where cherry picking would work, traditional merges are preferred instead. With that said git cherry-pick is a handy tool for a few scenarios.

Team collaboration.

Often times a team will find individual members working in or around the same code. Maybe a new product feature has a backend and frontend component. There may be some shared code between to two product sectors. Maybe the backend developer creates a data structure that the frontend will also need to utilize. The frontend developer could use git cherry-pick to pick the commit in which this hypothetical data structure was created. This pick would enable the frontend developer to continue progress on their side of the project.

Bug hotfixes

When a bug is discovered it is important to deliver a fix to end users as quickly as possible. For an example scenario, say a developer has started work on a new feature. During that new feature development they identify a pre-existing bug. The developer creates an explicit commit patching this bug. This new patch commit can be cherry-picked directly to the master branch to fix the bug before it effects more users.

Undoing changes and restoring lost commits

Sometimes a feature branch may go stale and not get merged into master . Sometimes a pull request might get closed without merging. Git never loses those commits and through commands like git log and git reflog they can be found and cherry picked back to life.

How to use git cherry pick

To demonstrate how to use git cherry-pick let us assume we have a repository with the following branch state:

git cherry-pick usage is straight forward and can be executed like:

In this example commit Sha is a commit reference. You can find a commit reference by using git log . In this example we have constructed lets say we wanted to use commit `f` in master . First we ensure that we are working on the master branch.

Then we execute the cherry-pick with the following command:

Once executed our Git history will look like:

The f commit has been successfully picked into the feature branch

Examples of git cherry pick

git cherry pick can also be passed some execution options.

Passing the -edit option will cause git to prompt for a commit message before applying the cherry-pick operation

The --no-commit option will execute the cherry pick but instead of making a new commit it will move the contents of the target commit into the working directory of the current branch.

The --signoff option will add a 'signoff' signature line to the end of the cherry-pick commit message

In addition to these helpful options git cherry-pick also accepts a variety of merge strategy options. Learn more about these options at the git merge strategies documentation.

Additionally, git cherry-pick also accepts option input for merge conflict resolution, this includes options: --abort --continue and --quit this options are covered more in depth with regards to git merge and git rebase.

Summary

Cherry picking is a powerful and convenient command that is incredibly useful in a few scenarios. Cherry picking should not be misused in place of git merge or git rebase. The git log command is required to help find commits to cherry pick.
