<p>Team Foundation Server (TFS) is the on-premises Azure DevOps offering. TFS includes Build and Release and can be installed and managed on your own servers.</p>

<p>Continuous Integration (CI) is the practice used by development teams to automate the merging and testing of code. Implementing CI helps to catch bugs early in the development cycle, which makes them less expensive to fix. Automated tests execute as part of the CI process to ensure quality. Artifacts are produced from CI systems and fed to release processes to drive frequent deployments. The Build service in TFS helps you set up and manage CI for your applications.</p>
<p>Continuous Delivery (CD) is a process by which code is built, tested, and deployed to one or more test and production environments. Deploying and testing in multiple environments drives quality. CI systems produce the deployable artifacts including infrastructure and apps. Automated release processes consume these artifacts to release new versions and fixes to existing systems. Monitoring and alerting systems run continually to drive visibility into the entire CD process. The Release service in TFS helps you set up and manage CD for your applications.</p>
<p>Continuous Testing (CT) on-premises or in the cloud is the use of automated build-deploy-test workflows, with a choice of technologies and frameworks, that test your changes continuously in a fast, scalable, and efficient manner.</p>
<h2>Version control systems</h2>
<p>The starting point for configuring CI and CD for your applications is to have your source code in a version control system. TFS supports two forms of version control - Git and Team Foundation Version Control. The Build service integrates with both of these version control systems. Once you have configured CI, any changes you push to your version control repository will be automatically built and validated. You can also manage your source code in Subversion, Bitbucket Cloud, GitHub, or any other Git repository. The Build service integrates with all of these version control systems.</p>
<h2>Application types</h2>
<p>To configure CI, you create a build definition. A build definition is a representation of the automation process that you want to run to build and test your application. The automation process is defined as a collection of tasks. TFS has a number of tasks to build and test your application. For example, tasks exist to build .Net, Java, Node, Android, Xcode, and C++ applications. Similarly, there are tasks to run tests using a number of testing frameworks and services. You can also run command line, PowerShell, or Shell scripts in your automation.</p>
<h2>Deployment targets</h2>
<p>Once you have continuous integration in place, the next step is to create a release definition to automate the deployment of your application to one or more environments. This automation process is again defined as a collection of tasks. TFS supports deploying your application to virtual machines, containers, on-premises and cloud platforms, or PaaS services. You can also publish your mobile application to a store.</p>
<h2>Continuous testing</h2>
<p>Whether your app is on-premises or in the cloud, you can automate build-deploy-test workflows and choose the technologies and frameworks, then test your changes continuously in a fast, scalable, and efficient manner.</p>

<h1>5 Challenges to DevOps Adoption and How to Overcome Them</h1>
<p>Many software and IT Ops teams have adopted DevOps practices into their work cultures to help them evolve into a faster and more innovative version of their former selves.</p>
<p>Companies which haven?t yet adopted DevOps feel the pressure to do so as a result of competition. Pursuing advancement can be uncomfortable because it calls for teams to move out of their comfort zones. Progress comes with challenges at first, but pays off when you stay the course. Let?s look at a few challenges that companies face when they seek to adopt DevOps.</p>
<h4>1. Overcoming the Dev versus Ops mentality</h4>
<p>The DevOps practice is all about integrating teams together and breaking down silos within IT organisations. There is the old DevOps clich? of developers tossing code over an imaginary wall to operations and difference in priorities. Devs trying to innovate and make changes as quickly as possible and operations trying to maintain 100% service levels. The truth is the goals of both teams seem to often counter each other. They need to align the goals and priorities of the teams. Also handovers between different teams are costly, expensive and a source of delay. Integrating different teams is at the heart of DevOps, and is the first hurdle that any company needs to overcome as it adopts DevOps practices.</p>
<p>Further to this integration, some organisations are now moving to a cross functional and product aligned teams rather than managing projects. A broad cross functional team aligns to products, by owning its roadmap, architecture, design, development, run and support requirements. This brings testers and representatives of the business into the development team and a collaborative process. This sounds easy, but for enterprises this is exceedingly difficult, often involving staff restructure, breaking up shared services and reporting lines. With this there is often a political battle about which org unit pays for and therefore is the owner of the product.</p>
<h4>2. Moving from legacy infrastructure to microservices</h4>
<p>Older infrastructure and applications can be problematic, even if it has served the company for years. Remaining on legacy infrastructure can spell stability problems, lack of support and the fact that you will be left behind the swiftly advancing competition. Using Infrastructure-as-code together with microservices is yet another step towards a future of continuous innovation. It modifies the development lifecycle to quickly adapt to changing markets and customer needs. If a company does not stay innovative, it will be replaced quickly by one that offers something more, no matter how popular that company has been. Replacing or modifying older, monolithic apps with newer microservices architecture can open up the floodgates to faster development and quicker innovation.</p>
<p>However, there is a high barrier to entry with microservices. It has its own set of problems than need to be managed. By moving to microservices architecture from a monolith and legacy infrastructure, you need to have the foundations of automation, configuration management and continuous delivery in place to be able to cope with the increased operational workloads that microservices bring.</p>
<h4>3. Too much focus on tools</h4>
<p>With the exciting prospect of adopting DevOps, the flashy new tools in the market can seem like they solve every problem under the sun. However, with the introduction of new tools, you also need to train staff to use them, ensure they meet security requirements, and of course, make sure that the tools are well-integrated with the existing infrastructure. All this can divert you from your key priority - your team. Your team and your org structure and key to DevOps, once you have the correct structure in place the processes of the team will follow. Once the processes are defined then you can determine the tools required to meet the processes. Make sure you focus on your team more than your tools. The people on your team are the most important factor when transitioning to DevOps. If they?re not trained on newly implemented processes and tools, then there will be confusion.</p>
<h4>4. Resistance to change</h4>
<p>The move to DevOps can seem scary to a majority of team members and key stakeholders. Packaging it as an evolution of current development practices rather than a revolution can help that issue. Telling people that they need to change can be seen as a bad reflection on the person receiving the advice. DevOps change doesn?t happen overnight; it must be smooth and gradual. This will allow everyone to embrace the DevOps culture as they slowly become accustomed to it and realise the different ways they can contribute to the development process. It is better to find a small product or full stack slice of an existing application to remodel it into DevOps practices. Once teams can see the benefits working in action, then other teams will organically want to adopt the new ways of working. This will steadily ease the sense of unfamiliarity, and get everyone on board to enter the new world of DevOps.</p>
<h4>5. Dev and Ops toolset clashes</h4>
<p>There also exists the problem of Dev and Ops teams having completely separate toolsets and metrics. As simple as it may seem, it is beneficial to sit both teams down and seek to understand where it makes sense to integrate the tools they use, and unify the metrics they monitor. Some teams may be unwilling to part with legacy tools that are not only technologically inferior but that also slow down the entire infrastructure due to compatibility issues. Make sure the tools that are being implemented are aligned with the goals of the company and do not distract from the main objective: the apps being developed.</p>
<p>Overcoming these basic challenges in the beginning will make the move to DevOps much smoother. Over a period of time, every team member will get used to the feeling of constant change and innovation. Once the Dev, Ops and other teams learn to cooperate, they will determine ways of helping each other out, and collaborating even more closely.</p>
<p>The discomfort of change is better than staying behind the competition and not being innovative.</p>

<p>Last week we covered auto-creating Release when a build completes. This week we are going to cover how to create a release when a build from a pull request completes. This setup would be helpful for verification of changes before the actual make it into a releasable branch. The following posts will help you catch up if you?re new to the series.</p>

<h3>Build Validation Branch Policy</h3>
<p>Before we can have a Release created with a pull request we have to make sure that the pull request process does a build. I?m going to review how to do this quickly, for more info see my Branch Policies post. To do this we are going to head over to the <strong>Repos</strong> section of Azure DevOps. In the <strong>Branches</strong> section on the branch we want a build on a pull request for select the three dots and then click <strong>Branch policies</strong>.</p>

<h3>Release Changes to allow Pull Request Trigger</h3>
<p>Based on how we set up our Release to trigger when a build complete you might think that using the same build to validate a Pull Request would automatically trigger a new Release, but that isn?t the case. In most cases, this is actually a good thing since you wouldn?t want to deploy change before they have been reviewed. In the case we are trying to cover our release is to a QA environment so the requested changes can be verified before they make it into a releasable branch.</p>
<p>To enable a Release to be created from a pull request we need to head over to the <strong>Pipeline > Release</strong> area in Azure DevOps. Once there with the release in question selected click the <strong>Edit</strong> button.</p>

<p>Near the middle of the dialog, we want to <strong>Enable</strong> the <strong>Pull request trigger</strong>. Doing this will also require you to enter <strong>Target Branch Filters</strong> which are the branches that will be allowed to trigger a release when they are a target of a pull request.</p>

<p>Next, we need to enable our sample stage to be deployed for releases based on pull requests. Click the <strong>lightning bolt</strong> on the left side of the stage to edit the pre-deployment conditions.</p>

<p>To show the results I created a new branch with a small change and created a PR into the master branch. From the Pull Request, we can click the <strong>View all checks</strong> button to see the status of the required build.</p>

<p>how the processes of build works in terms of containerized application because in our case it is magneto image which is 1.6GB and building that size of image is taking too much time how we can overcome this?</p>

<p>In my last post I wrote about how I created an Azure DevOps pipeline using Ansible in a more "Terraform" way, however, although I have used Terraform and Azure DevOps quite a bit I realised I didn't really have a template for a pipeline.</p>
<p>Before we look at the pipeline itself I should point out that is uses the the Terraform Azure Pipeline extension by Microsoft DevLabs from the Visual Studio Marketplace, if you are following along with this post please ensure that the extension is installed in your organisation before proceeding.</p>
<p>Now we have that out of the way, and before I breakdown the azure-pipelines.yml file, lets quickly get an overview of what the tasks which are running in the pipeline;</p>

<p>As you can see from the flow of tasks above I am creating the storage account used to store the Terraform state file as part of the pipeline itself rather than doing manually outside of the pipeline. In nearly all of my Azure DevOps pipelines I see the following variable as SUBSCRIPTION_NAME which contains the name of the service connection that should be used to connect to Azure, wherever you see $(SUBSCRIPTION_NAME) in the following tasks that is referring to the service connection.</p>
<p>The azure-pipelines.yml file starts of by defining the trigger, in this case it is triggered each time something is pushed to the master branch:</p>
<p>Next, I define some variables, apart from tf_version which fines which version of Terraform I want to install the rest are to do with the Terraform state file resources which need to be configured before I run Terraform:</p>
<p>Then we decide on the image used for the pipeline run, as you may have guessed, I am using Linux:</p>
<p>Now that the basics for the pipeline are covered I can start to define some tasks, beginning with installing Terraform:</p>
<p>As you can see, I am using the terraformInstaller@0 task from the Terraform DevOps extension along with the $(tf_version) which was defined at the top of the file. Now that Terraform is installed I need to either create the storage account, or if it already exists gather some facts. To do this I am using the AzureCLI@2 task:</p>
<p>As you can see I am running a quite a few commands, these do the following:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Sets an environment variable containing the tags defined in the pipeline variables</li>
<li>Creates a Resource Group and tags it</li>
<li>Creates the Azure Storage Account and tags it</li>
<li>Sets an environment variable containing the Storage Account key</li>
<li>Creates a container in the Azure Storage Account which has just been created using the key gathered in the previous step</li>
<li>Adds the Azure Storage Account key as a pipeline variable so that we can use it in the next task</li>
</ol>
</p>
<p>If the Resource Group, Azure Storage Account and container already exist then we still need the Azure Storage Account key so this task needs to be executed during each pipeline run as the following task needs to interact with the Azure Storage account:</p>
<p>Here I am running terraform init and passing all of the variables which tell Terraform how to configure the AzureRM backend service with the details of the Azure Storage account I configured in the previous task. Once the terraform init has been executed we do not need to pass the AzureRM backend service details again. The final two tasks plan and apply the Terraform configuration:</p>
<p>As you can see I am providing rather than using backendServiceArm I am using environmentServiceNameAzureRM , this means that if I wanted I could store my Terraform state file(s) in a completely separate Azure Subscription from where I am deploying my resources should I want to.</p>
