Azure devops pluralsight Today's news stories Azure devops pluralsight

Azure DevOps (VSTS) setup

Overview

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to connect your Microsoft Azure DevOps to Flow.

Before you get started

Before you get started, please make sure that your system is supported. You are supported if:

You use git repos (TFVC repos are not supported and are not expected to be supported)

Permission requirements

To use all integration services such as repos, pull requests, tickets and webhooks, two conditions must be met. First, please review the personal access token scopes outlined below. And second, the service account needs to be a Project Collection Administrator at the organizational level.

If webhooks are not needed, the permission required to establish a connection and import repos is View instance-level information at the user level, and the user needs to be added to the reader group at the project level.

Azure DevOps configuration

Step 1: In order to connect your Azure DevOps account, you will need to first create a new integration. Starting on your Flow home page, go to the top navigation bar and click Settings. Using the left navigation under Integrations, click Integrations.

Step 2: Click the Add Integration button in the top right hand corner of your integrations screen.

Step 3: On the following page click Azure DevOps .

Step 4: On this page you will need to input the following information:

Email - Email associated with the service account.

Tip: This field is case sensitive. Use the exact email format seen in your Azure user profile.

Personal Access Token (see below)

Base URL - https://dev.azure.com/

IaaS vs. PaaS: The best choice for a DevOps environment

Article 1 of 2

PaaS or IaaS? That is the question

Along with many other advantages of microservices-based applications, small code base, scalability, simple deployment and more, come additional options in technology stacks. That gives DevOps teams the option to choose more flexible cloud platforms for development and deployment that fit business needs as well as DevOps environment, team size and skill levels. But selecting the right cloud services platform -- usually between IaaS and PaaS -- on which to deploy a microservices architecture and develop microservices is not so easy.

In this buyer's handbook, veteran IT journalist Darryl Taft explores the rationale for choosing infrastructure as a service and platform as a service. Essentially, it's a know-thyself exercise, Taft explains, because either choice comes with its own requirements for in-house expertise, customization and lifecycle management.

With IaaS, the organization gets the big package of infrastructure services, including hosted network, server, storage and development tools. The pros and cons of IaaS for microservices development and deployment are the same: The organization has to use IaaS and sometimes third-party tools to build its own DevOps platform. The big questions here are: Does the DevOps team have the skills and, more important, the time to build? And would the broader customization options of build your own be valuable?

That's not to say customization isn't possible with most PaaS offerings, but the key value of PaaS is its packaged and integrated one-stop toolkit. The need for speed is a top driver for choosing PaaS, which comes with automated development, deployment, provisioning, security and other application lifecycle management tools. While a build-your-own IaaS development platform requires maintenance by the in-house DevOps team, the PaaS user gets updates and maintenance services from the provider.

When deciding between IaaS and PaaS, we offer expert advice on which option best suits your DevOps environment.

Vsts custom conditions News headlines Vsts custom conditions

Vsts custom conditions

I've been working with Azure DevOps quite a lot recently (having used its predecessors for many years) and I'm constantly amazed by features I never knew existed or which I vaguely knew existed but hadn't fully appreciated. In this blog post series I'm attempting to shine a light on some of these hidden gems for the benefit of others. The full list of posts is here and if you have any suggestions for other posts please leave a comment!

Imagine this scenario: you have a code branch on which you want to run an all-singing, all-dancing build packed full of tasks, and another branch where you only want to run a subset of those tasks. Cloning the build and stripping out unwanted tasks to create a second build is the answer, right? Not necessarily! It turns out that most tasks can be set to run conditionally, according to criteria that you specify.

To configure this feature (I'm illustrating using visual tasks but there is a YAML equivalent) open the task and head over to Control Options. For Run this task select Custom conditions and then enter your conditions in Custom condition:

In the build task example above the task will only run if the build is succeeding and the build is running against the master branch. For any other branches it will be skipped.

To understand the full capabilities of this fantastic feature you should take a look at the Conditions overview page and then the Expressions page which has a full guide to the conditions syntax. I'll blog soon about a specific scenario where this feature is just exactly what is needed to avoid creating a second build and the potential maintenance issue that causes.

Continuous development - Эдуард Кабринский

Continuous development

[youtube]

Continuous development Top news Continuous development

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Continuing professional development, or CPD, is the ongoing process of developing, maintaining and documenting your professional skills.

These skills may be gained formally, through courses or training, or informally, on the job or by watching others.

Some professions use the term 'continuing professional development' formally, and require a certain amount of development activity to be carried out and documented each year as a condition of maintaining your membership of, or registration with, a professional body, or a licence to operate in that field.

In other areas, CPD is used more informally. A commitment to learning and improving is, however, generally expected of anyone in a professional capacity.

What is a profession?

A profession, broadly speaking, is a career area for which you need a professional qualification. Traditionally, the professions included law, medicine (including dentistry and other allied professions), accountancy, the civil service and similar. More recently, many other professions have emerged, including HR, marketing, sales and IT, all of which have recognised professional qualifications.

Professional qualifications are a requirement to operate in some professions, such as medicine or dentistry. While it is not absolutely required to hold an HR qualification to work in HR, for example, anyone wishing to make a career in that area is strongly encouraged to obtain qualifications to demonstrate their commitment.

The Continuing Professional Development Cycle

The process of CPD is designed to help you identify and act on your own development needs.

The Continuous Professional Development Cycle (see figure) shows that professional development is, like much other learning, best thought of as a circular series of activities. The process moves from identifying your development needs through planning and then carrying out your learning activities, to reflecting on your learning, and then applying it and sharing it with others.

Perhaps the most important thing about CPD is that it is personal.

Each individual is expected to identify their own needs, organise their own training, and learn for themselves. Part of being a professional is taking responsibility for your own skills and recognising when they need to improve.

1. Identifying Your Needs

There are a number of ways in which you can identify development needs.

For example, you can carry out a skills audit. You may receive feedback from colleagues or your line manager about an area in which you are weaker. Alternatively, you may have an interest in a particular area and want to develop your knowledge.

Once you have identified your key areas for development, you then need to plan your activities.

2. Planning and Carrying Out Development Activities

Development activities may be either:

Formal, such as training courses or particular qualifications. These are often, though not always, provided by an external provider, and may carry a cost. Your employer may have a limit on what they are prepared to pay, so you may need to consider self-funding or alternatives such as online resources that are cheaper or even free.

Informal learning, including side-by-side learning, video training (for example, for doctors in particular surgical techniques), shadowing, mentoring, coaching or reading on the subject.

There is a growing recognition that continuing professional development is both essential and potentially expensive. Especially in developing countries, professionals are using the internet to share teaching content for free, or at very low cost. You may find that an imaginative approach to seeking out development activities pays off.

3. Reflecting on Your Learning

Reflecting on what you have learned is a vital part of continuing professional development. Learning does not emerge only from activities that you designated as ?development?, and you may find that you are learning at least as much from your day-to-day activities.

It is a good idea to keep a ?learning log? or diary. Make a habit of writing in it at least once a week, if not each day (if you leave it any longer, you probably won?t remember). For each event or activity that you find useful, make a note of:

The situation;

What you learned;

What you will do differently as a result.

This diary can be used to assess your progress against your development goals.

For any formal or informal but designated development activity, you should record the activity, what you found useful or not useful about it, and what you have learned. In each case, make sure that you are clear about how it will change what you do in future (how you apply your learning).

You may find our page on Reflective Practice helpful in developing good habits in this area.

4. Applying Your Learning

Going on training courses or watching videos is only the start. You then have to apply what you have learned to your own job. This can be quite a clumsy process, especially at first. The competence theory of learning sets out that we move through four stages when we learn:

Unconscious incompetence РІ?? not knowing what we don?t know;

Conscious incompetence РІ?? knowing where we need to develop and watching other people do it, but still unable to do it ourselves with any skill;

Conscious competence РІ?? being able to do something reasonably well, provided we concentrate; and

Unconscious competence РІ?? being able to do something almost instinctively, without needing to focus on it.

There is more about this cycle in our page on Coaching.

When you have done some training or other development activity, you will probably be somewhere between conscious incompetence and conscious competence, depending on how much you have been able to practise.

You therefore need to spend time applying your learning and practising to move to a stage of unconscious competence.

5. Sharing Your Learning with Others

Some commentators add a fifth stage to the competence cycle РІ?? being able to teach others. It is certainly true that being able to articulate and share your learning is an important part of making sure that you have fully internalised it.

It is a good idea to get into the habit of discussing your learning with your colleagues on a regular basis. Sharing each other's learning can be a really good development tool, and can help you identify new areas for development, or ideas for other development activities, as well as helping to refine what you have learnt in your mind.

Recording Your Development

An important part of continuing professional development is being able to demonstrate it, especially if your membership of a professional body depends on it.

You should therefore keep a folder or portfolio of all your development activities, drawing on your learning diary. The aim of this is to be able to show how your skills and knowledge have developed over a period.

You should therefore:

Keep a note of your development needs and goals, and make a regular (quarterly, six-monthly or annual) assessment of your progress against them;

Record any training courses attended, with a copy of any certificates or qualifications obtained. Keep a record of the date, provider, aims of the training, and your thoughts on what you learned from it;

Make a note of any shadowing, video-assisted training or similar. In each case, record the provider, the aims, and your thoughts about what you learned;

For any coaching or mentoring sessions, make a note of the date, the person you were with, what you discussed, and what you intend to do differently as a result;

For any reading and other informal development that you do, make a note of the book or website, and what you have learned and will do differently as a result;

If you are involved in any critical incidents, or make particular mistakes from which you learn, record the details of the incident, what you learned, and what you will do differently as a result.

And finallyРІ??

Continuing professional development is an ongoing process, as well as a cycle. You are likely to continue to learn throughout your professional life.

It is therefore a good idea to develop a process for it that works for you at an early stage of your career.

OpenAPI Document Tools

Microsoft

The OpenAPI Document Tools extension for Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) adds a task to auto-generate OpenAPI documents at build time based on your source code + API annotations.

Features

Build Task: Create OpenAPI documents

Teams may leverage this task to auto-generate an OpenAPI document based on Visual Studio XML annotations and assemblies resulting from a build.

To get started annotating your APIs in source code, please read the following wiki articles:

C# comment tag reference: A tag-by-tag guide for documenting source code

C# comment samples: Samples showing how-to annotate source code

Advanced features: An overview & how-to guide of advanced, optional features to control built document's content

Windows Agents

A special note when running this task on a Windows agent. If your service assemblies target framework .NET Core, then PowerShell Core must be used at task runtime. The task will attempt to use PowerShell Core by default, but falls back to using PowerShell unless the Advanced option to disable this behavior is configured. In the event PowerShell is used in conjunction with .NET Core target framework assemblies, you will see errors generating the OpenAPI document related to type load exceptions.

Task Input

Task Output

The following files will be written to your build location in UTF-8 encoding and without a byte order mark (BOM). Please see OpenAPI.NET.CSharpAnnotations for a definition of terms variant and title.

An OpenAPI document per variant.

A metadata document per variant. These metadata files map 1:1 with an OpenAPI document above as hinted by their names.

A file containing OpenAPI document generation errors. Note, this document will not exist unless there is at least one error as a result of generation.

Release Task: Publish OpenAPI documents

Teams may leverage this task to publish OpenAPI documents to VSTS Git source control.

The task will create an intermediate branch containing your target OpenAPI document adds/edits and a corresponding pull request to merge them into a target branch. The task does not push directly into the target branch for two reasons: (1) branch policies may be in place preventing direct pushes, and (2) promotes reviews of changes before they're merged.

An access token with vso.code_manage scope will be required, so the task may create a private branch, push changes, and create a pull request in your repository.

The OpenAPI document file names committed are based on the Title within the document's Info object and have an extension reflecting the content's format (JSON or YAML).

Supported OpenAPI document sources:

C# Annotations Generator - Use this option in conjunction with the build task documented above. Note, the release task must be configured to download artifacts, so it has access to the OpenAPI documents from your build output.

Git Source Control - Use this option to fetch an OpenAPI document committed to a Git repository.

Web Service API - Use this option to fetch an OpenAPI document from a web service GET endpoint. For example, if your document is produced by Swashbuckle. We recommend configuring this task to execute after your service has been deployed, in order to keep documentation up-to-date with your live service.

Task Input

Azure devops cherry pick - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Azure devops cherry pick

[youtube]

Azure devops cherry pick Newspaper headlines today Azure devops cherry pick

Improving Azure DevOps cherry-picking

One of the more powerful git commands is the cherry-pick command. This command takes one or more existing commits and applies each commit?s changes as a new commit on a different branch. This can be an extremely powerful component of many git workflows such as the Azure DevOps team?s Release Flow. To highlight a common use-case for it, let?s talk about hot-fixing release branches.

In this scenario, we have a master branch that devs contribute to. When a release is ready, a release branch is created based off the latest commit in master and a deployment goes out to end users. After people begin using this newly released version, your team starts to get flooded with new bug reports ? now it?s time for a hotfix!

As the dev tasked with fixing the bug, you create a hotfix branch (based off the head of the release branch) and commit the necessary changes (commits A and B in Figure 1) to that branch. After you?re satisfied that you have addressed the issue, you then open a pull request (PR) back into the release branch. The next step is to ensure that the next release doesn?t contain the bug ? this is exactly when cherry-picking can help. So, you cherry-pick the hotfix commit(s) to a branch based off the head of master and open a PR into master.

Current Azure Repos cherry-pick support

This workflow is so common that Azure DevOps has a built-in capability to cherry-pick a PR?s commits to a new topic branch directly from a browser. However, this can be cumbersome if you need to apply commits to multiple branches at once while also opening new PRs.

For example, inside Microsoft, it is very common for product teams to cherry-pick changes into multiple branches at the same time. For example, the Office team has multiple versions at various stages of deployment at any given time, meaning there are multiple release branches to hotfix.

With the current mechanism, you would have to cherry-pick to each new topic branch and then open a PR from the topic branch into the target branch ? for every branch that needed the hotfix. Therefore, we built this extension to help Microsoft product teams, such as Office, and we wanted to share it with everyone!

Multi-cherry-pick extension

In order to provide an easy way to cherry-pick a PR?s commits to multiple branches at once, we added a new context menu item that sits right below the current cherry-pick menu item.

For each branch selected, a new topic branch will be created with the applied changes. If the Pull request option is selected, a pull request will be opened to the target branch.

Getting started

Install the extension from the marketplace into your Azure DevOps organization.

Navigate to your pull request.

Select the context menu (?)

Select Multi-cherry-pick.

Add as many cherry-pick targets as you would like.

After you click Complete, a summary page will appear with links to branches and PRs created from the tool.

This makes it much simpler to support workflows where multiple (or even just one) destinations need to have commits applied.

Note: because this extension is open source, you can file feature requests, suggestions, and issues at GitHub.

Lastly, please leave us a review in the marketplace; we?d absolutely love to hear your feedback.
