<p>Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) have these really handy features that let you define DevOps release pipelines for your applications. To get to it, go to the web portal for your Team Project and click the Releases tab.</p>

<p>Whether you use Releases (aka. ?Release Management?) in TFS/VSTS or whether you use some other tool, one of the trickiest parts is handling usernames, passwords, and database connection strings. Each environment that you deploy to probably has different server names and different passwords. Typically, lots of people have the passwords for the development environment but for the production servers, there are probably just a very limited number of people who have that information.</p>
<p>So how do deal with this? How do you make it so that not everyone can see the values?</p>
<h4>Use Configuration Variables</h4>
<p>The answer is that you should define configuration variables in your TFS/VSTS release definition. These values can be stored at the Release level or at the Environment level. To specify a configuration variable for the Release, click on the configuration tab and then add the variables. (BTW, we?ll handle the encrypted stuff in a moment.)</p>

<p>Once you?ve defined the variables, you can then use these values in the steps (aka. ?activities?) in your release. You reference them using the $(<em>variable-name</em>) format as shown in the following image.</p>

<h4>?But everyone can still see the password!?</h4>
<p>Ok. So you?ve got the values being used as configuration variables. But you still have the problem of the password being visible in cleartext. This is an easy fix but it?s a little tough to see. The answer is actually hidden in plain sight. <em>(BTW, thanks to my friend and fellow MVP, Angela Dugan @OakParkGirl for pointing this out.)</em></p>
<p>Go back to the Configuration tab where you defined the configuration variables for the release.</p>
<p>Hidden to the right of the value is a little lock icon. Click that lock button and save your release definition. Voila! that value is now encrypted. </p>

<p>By the way, this same trick works on TFS Build Variables, too.</p>

<p>I just spent quite a few hours trying to integrate BitBucket and Azure DevOps. We were only able to list repos, and all other operations/selections would not work and would provide a 'Forbidden' error.</p>
<p>We attempted to work around auth issues (MFA enabled on BitBucket), but there doesn't seem to be any way get a private key into Azure DevOps to allow for the jobs to authenticate to build out pipelines.</p>
<p>It doesn't seem to be possible. has anyone had experience with this and found a workaround?</p>

<p>FYI, the resolution to this issue was to whitelist an undocumented public IP address for the region that our Azure DevOps org was in. Overall, i'm not super pleased with the outcome since I'm concerned that IP will change in the future. but at least I now know what to do to fix it.</p>
<p>@Ziggy Where did you white list the IP? I am having this exact issue and it is driving me insane. Going on almost a whole day trying to troubleshoot this problem.</p>
<p>Are you hosting your own BitBucket Server or using Cloud Hosted?</p>

<p>Hey @Marco Crank , we whitelisted it on the Bitbucket Cloud Hosted solution itself under Access Controls for the account.</p>
<p>Just FYI, after much more discovery work, even though I was able to list the buckets and select content, we were still unable to perform a build. A git checkout from Azure DevOps was failing to perform the activity while complaining about whitelisting.</p>
<p>In that case, Microsoft told us to either whitelist the entirety of the Azure CIDR ranges, or move on to self-hosted build agents.</p>

<p>You may have had your fill of Nokia analysis and features, but I'd like to draw your attention to one more - one that's very special. The Finnish daily <em>Helsingin Sanomat</em> has published a report based on 15 interviews with senior staff. It reads like the transcript to an Oscar-winning documentary where the narrative thread is held together entirely by the talking heads.</p>
<p>The report is very long on detail and short on opinionising - and for those of you fascinated by technology and bureaucracy, something quite interesting emerges. What we learn is that the company's current predicament was fated in 2003, when a re-organisation split Nokia's all-conquering mobile phones division into three units. The architect was Jorma Ollila, Nokia's most successful ever CEO, and a popular figure - who steered the company from crisis in 1992 to market leadership in mobile phones - and who as chairman oversaw the ousting of Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo this year.</p>
<p>In Ollila's reshuffle, Nokia made a transition from an agile, highly reactive product-focused company to one that managed a matrix, or portfolio. The phone division was split into three: Multimedia, Enterprise and Phones, and the divisions were encouraged to compete for staff and resources. The first Nokia made very few products to a very high standard. But after the reshuffle, which took effect on 1 January 2004, the in-fighting became entrenched, and the company being increasingly bureaucratic. The results were pure Dilbert material.</p>
<p>For example, have a look at the section which starts here, with "A novel application or feature has been dreamed up that should end up installed in a phone a year from now. This is the beginning of a long day's journey to nowhere."</p>
<p>Innovations produced by the R&D department and designers could no longer be implemented quickly - one example should have taken just a couple of weeks, but instead took months to be incorporated into phones.</p>
<p>Executive managers interviewed note how the result was a large number of indifferent products.</p>
<p>Another consequence was also predictable. It's what political writers call the most morally corrupting effect of bureaucracies: nobody takes responsibility. With the three divisions covering their own backsides, nobody wanted to make the long-term strategic investments necessary to keep platform software up-to-date. This resulted in the Symbian user interface being neglected. Nokia had developed a touch screen UI called Hildon, which became Series 90, starting in 2001 - and that should have been the basis for Nokia's iPhone competitors today. But it was canned in 2005.</p>
<p>"We produced a quite enormous number of rather average products. It would have been smarter to make fewer - and better," says one interviewee.</p>
<p>The masterplan was ripped up by Ollila's successor, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, in 2007, but by then the units had become enormously wealthy fiefdoms, and many of the problems remained. Lots of people could veto a decision, but the leadership required to drive one through was absent. Nokia's product pipeline all but dried up in 2009.</p>

You will become familiar with the nitty gritty of Continuous Integration and Continuous Development with VSTS and Microsoft Azure Apps. You will not only learn how to create App service environments, but also how to compare Azure Web Apps and App Service Environments to deploy web applications in a more secure environment.</p>
<p>Once you have completed Continuous Integration and created the Platform for application deployment, you will learn more about the final stepping stone in achieving end-to-end automation using approval-based Continuous Delivery and Deployment. You will then learn about Continuous Monitoring, using the monitoring and notification options provided by Microsoft Azure and Visual Studio Team Services.</p>

<p>All of the code is organized into folders. Each folder starts with a number followed by the application name. For example, Chapter02.</p>
<p>The code will look like the following:</p>
<p>This book assumes that you are familiar with at least the Java programming language. Knowledge of core Java and JEE is essential if you want to gain better insights from this book. Having a strong understanding of the deployment of a web application in application servers such as Tomcat will help you to understand the flow quickly.</p>
<p>As the application development life cycle will cover a lot of tools in general, it is essential to have some knowledge of repositories, as well as IDE tools such as Eclipse, and build tools such as Ant and Maven. Knowledge of code analysis tools will make your job easier in configuration and integration; however, it is not vital to perform the exercises given in the book. Most of the configuration steps are mentioned clearly.</p>
<p>You will be walked through the steps required to get familiar with VSTS, Microsoft Azure Web Apps, Microsoft Azure App Service Environments, and Microsoft Azure SQL Database.</p>
<p>For Microsoft Azure, you can use a one month trial access. VSTS also comes with a trial account with some restrictions.</p>
