<p>If you are using the Enterprise or Datacenter edition of SQL Server and you want to restore the collection and configuration databases to a Standard edition of SQL Server, then before you make the backup, you must turn off SQL Server compression by following the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base article.</p>

<p>If you're not an administrator for Azure DevOps, a member of the SQL Server System Administrators group, and (if your deployment uses SharePoint Products) a member of the Farm Administrators group, get those permissions now.</p>
<p>In addition, the Azure DevOps service account (TFSService) must have SQL Server Perform Back Up and Create Maintenance Plan permissions set to Allow on each instance of SQL Server that hosts the databases that you want to back up, and Full Control on the network share, folder, or storage device where the backups will be kept.</p>

Even with open source projects like MSBump, there are certain flaws. Typically, such a requirement happens on a CI/CD server. Let's take a look at how to easily handle it with Azure DevOps.</p>
<h6>About Versioning in .NET Core Applications</h6>

<p>We're going to control <strong>Version</strong> field this time.</p>

<p>Use <strong>dotnet build</strong> to compile your application into dll files, and this version will be shown in the property window.</p>

<p>Based on this, we can control the build number for a .NET Core application on build servers.</p>
<h6>Why Not Use MSBump</h6>
<p>You may heard of a project: Msbump, which can also be used to change the version number at compile time. However, it modifies the <strong>csproj</strong> file at compile time and is a code change. The traditional. NET FX compilation system does not change the code. This is unacceptable to me because it is a kind of uncontrollable factor. It's not a good practice to check in the csproj file that just changed the version number. And instead of generating the version number based on the timestamp, MSBump by default, generates the version by the current version string in the project file. So in a development team, everyone could have inconsistent version of the same csproj file. So I decided to give up MSBump and try to use Microsoft's own technology to solve it's own problem.</p>
<h6>Automatically Generate Version Numbers</h6>
<p>In a fully automated CI environment, it is not possible for us to manually specify a version number each time. I need a rule and a method to generate it automatically.</p>
<p>The rules I personally use is: <strong>[Major].[Minor].[Number of days from January 1, 2000].[Lucky Number]</strong></p>
<p>I use PowerShell to calculate the number of days from 1/1/2000.</p>

<h6>Configure Azure DevOps</h6>
<p>We basically need to tell Azure DevOps to calculate the version number, and use <strong>/p:Version</strong> parameter to build our project.</p>

<p>Add a variable named <strong>buildNumber</strong> in the build definition.</p>

Even with open source projects like MSBump, there are certain flaws. Typically, such a requirement happens on a CI/CD server. Let's take a look at how to easily handle it with Azure DevOps.</p>
<h6>About Versioning in .NET Core Applications</h6>

<p>We're going to control <strong>Version</strong> field this time.</p>

<p>Use <strong>dotnet build</strong> to compile your application into dll files, and this version will be shown in the property window.</p>
<p style="clear: both"><img src="https://edi.wang/uploads/img-261cadbf-daf2-4d90-a6c2-9a82a63e6091.png" /></p>
<p>But actually, the <strong>build</strong> command can have a parameter that sets a specific version number, like this:</p>

<p>Based on this, we can control the build number for a .NET Core application on build servers.</p>
<h6>Why Not Use MSBump</h6>
<p>You may heard of a project: Msbump, which can also be used to change the version number at compile time. However, it modifies the <strong>csproj</strong> file at compile time and is a code change. The traditional. NET FX compilation system does not change the code. This is unacceptable to me because it is a kind of uncontrollable factor. It's not a good practice to check in the csproj file that just changed the version number. And instead of generating the version number based on the timestamp, MSBump by default, generates the version by the current version string in the project file. So in a development team, everyone could have inconsistent version of the same csproj file. So I decided to give up MSBump and try to use Microsoft's own technology to solve it's own problem.</p>
<h6>Automatically Generate Version Numbers</h6>
<p>In a fully automated CI environment, it is not possible for us to manually specify a version number each time. I need a rule and a method to generate it automatically.</p>
<p>The rules I personally use is: <strong>[Major].[Minor].[Number of days from January 1, 2000].[Lucky Number]</strong></p>
<p>I use PowerShell to calculate the number of days from 1/1/2000.</p>

<h6>Configure Azure DevOps</h6>
<p>We basically need to tell Azure DevOps to calculate the version number, and use <strong>/p:Version</strong> parameter to build our project.</p>
<p><strong>Environment variables</strong></p>
<p>Add a variable named <strong>buildNumber</strong> in the build definition.</p>

<p><strong>PowerShell Task</strong></p>
<p>Add a <strong>PowerShell Task</strong> and put it as the <strong>first</strong> step in the build pipeline. This PowerShell Task need to calculate the version number and assign it to <strong>buildNumber</strong> variable</p>

<p>To set value to a variable in Azure DevOps pipeline, use <strong>Write-Host</strong> as:</p>

<p>Choose <strong>Inline</strong> and copy this script to the textarea.</p>

<h2>Step 1.</strong> We need to install GITLAB extension plugin.</h2>
<p>Note:</strong> But above plugin will only allow to access repos which are available over Internet not the self hosted on private network.</p>

<p>Most important point is that agent should be deployed where it can connects to private network. It could be either in VM in Azure or in VM on-premise. Agent needs to have opened connection on port 443 to Internet.</p>

<p>Part of the source code management is to be able to quickly determine the difference between your branch and the main development branch. Usually this happens to be the master but this can quickly change if you are following feature based development or trunk based development. VSTS has the concept of the compare branch where it would provide the number of commits ahead or behind data for all other branches. This helps one in quickly determining the related information by just taking a glance at the branch page.</p>
<p>To set a different branch as the compare branch, select the branch in the reference and click on the three dot icon:</p>

<p>Team Foundation Server (TFS) and Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) have these really handy features that let you define DevOps release pipelines for your applications. To get to it, go to the web portal for your Team Project and click the Releases tab.</p>

<p>Whether you use Releases (aka. ?Release Management?) in TFS/VSTS or whether you use some other tool, one of the trickiest parts is handling usernames, passwords, and database connection strings. Each environment that you deploy to probably has different server names and different passwords. Typically, lots of people have the passwords for the development environment but for the production servers, there are probably just a very limited number of people who have that information.</p>
<p>So how do deal with this? How do you make it so that not everyone can see the values?</p>
<h4>Use Configuration Variables</h4>
<p>The answer is that you should define configuration variables in your TFS/VSTS release definition. These values can be stored at the Release level or at the Environment level. To specify a configuration variable for the Release, click on the configuration tab and then add the variables. (BTW, we?ll handle the encrypted stuff in a moment.)</p>

<p>Once you?ve defined the variables, you can then use these values in the steps (aka. ?activities?) in your release. You reference them using the $(<em>variable-name</em>) format as shown in the following image.</p>

<h4>?But everyone can still see the password!?</h4>
<p>Ok. So you?ve got the values being used as configuration variables. But you still have the problem of the password being visible in cleartext. This is an easy fix but it?s a little tough to see. The answer is actually hidden in plain sight. <em>(BTW, thanks to my friend and fellow MVP, Angela Dugan @OakParkGirl for pointing this out.)</em></p>
<p>Go back to the Configuration tab where you defined the configuration variables for the release.</p>
<p>Hidden to the right of the value is a little lock icon. Click that lock button and save your release definition. Voila! that value is now encrypted. </p>
