<p>Agile coaching has several facets. The Agile coach helps the organization and teams to a higher ?performance level?. In other words, work more efficiently and effectively with better results!</p>
<p>In many organizations, the Scrum Masters are the Agile coaches, but not everywhere Scrum is used as an Agile framework. There are many hybrid situations in practice. For example with Agile project management, Less, SAFe or DevOps, where both Scrum Masters and Agile coaches walk around. And then the question arises, what?s the difference? What exactly does the Agile (DevOps) coach do? And how do you become a good Agile coach?</p>
<h1>The difference between the Agile Coach and the Scrum Master.</h1>
<p>Where the Scrum Master is part of the Scrum Team and looks outside from within the team, the Agile coach has the perspective from the outside in. An Agile coach is not part of the Agile team and does not take up development tasks. One of the goals of the Agile coach is to make the team autonomous and high performing, in collaboration with the Scrum Master, if there is one, and then to distance themselves.</p>
<h1>The tasks of the Agile (DevOps) coach.</h1>
<p>We can divide the execution of the coaching activities into different types of tasks. The Agile coach is a Trainer, Mentor, Consultant, Facilitator, but especially Coach. The Coach is enthusiastic about the Agile way of working and is happy to communicate that. He / she shows a lot of energy and that is pick up by others. The Agile coach works at different levels in the organization and thus supports not only the Agile teams, but also the roles and functions around them. <p>Azure Pipelines can be used to build images for any repository containing a Dockerfile. Building of both Linux and Windows containers is possible based on the agent platform used for the build.</p>

<h3>Get the code</h3>
<p>Fork the following repository containing a sample application and a Dockerfile:</p>
<h3>Create pipeline with build step</h3>
<p>Sign in to your Azure DevOps organization and navigate to your project.</p>
<p>Go to <strong>Pipelines</strong>, and then select <strong>New Pipeline</strong>.</p>
<p>Select <strong>GitHub</strong> as the location of your source code and select your repository.</p>
<p>You might be redirected to GitHub to sign in. If so, enter your GitHub credentials. You might be redirected to GitHub to install the Azure Pipelines app. If so, select <strong>Approve and install</strong>.</p>
<p>Select <strong>Starter pipeline</strong>. In the Review tab, replace the contents of azure-pipelines.yml with the following snippet -</p>

<h2>Windows container images</h2>
<p>Windows container images can be built using either Microsoft hosted Windows agents or Windows platform based self-hosted agents (all Microsoft hosted Windows platform-based agents are shipped with Moby engine and client needed for Docker builds). Learn more about the Windows agent options available with Microsoft hosted agents.</p>
<p>Linux container images can be built using Microsoft hosted Ubuntu-16.04 agents or Linux platform based self-hosted agents. Currently the Microsoft hosted MacOS agents can't be used to build container images as Moby engine needed for building the images is not pre-installed on these agents.</p>
<h2>BuildKit</h2>
<p>BuildKit introduces build improvements in the areas of performance, storage management, feature functionality, and security. To enable BuildKit based docker builds, set the DOCKER_BUILDKIT variable as shown in the following snippet:</p>
<p>BuildKit is not currently supported on Windows hosts.</p>
<h2>Pre-cached images on hosted agents</h2>
<p>Some commonly used images are pre-cached on the Microsoft-hosted agents to avoiding long time intervals spent in pulling these images from container registry for every job. Images such as microsoft/dotnet-framework , microsoft/aspnet , microsoft/windowsservercore , microsoft/nanoserver , and microsoft/aspnetcore-build are pre-cached on Windows agents while jekyll/builder and mcr.microsoft.com/azure-pipelines/node8-typescript are pre-cached on Linux agents. The list of pre-cached images is available in the release notes of azure-pipelines-image-generation repository.</p>
<h2>Self-hosted agents</h2>
<p>Docker needs to be installed on self-hosted agent machines prior to runs that try to build container images. To address this issue, a step corresponding to Docker installer task can be placed in the pipeline definition prior to the step related to Docker task.</p>
<h2>Script-based docker builds</h2>
<p>Note that it is also possible to build (or any Docker command) images by running docker on script as shown below:</p>
<p>The above command results in an equivalent image in terms of content as the one built by using the Docker task. The Docker task itself internally calls docker binary on script, but also stitches together a few more commands to provide a few additional benefits as described in the Docker task's documentation.</p>
<h3>Is reutilizing layer caching during builds possible on Azure Pipelines?</h3>
<p>In the current design of Microsoft-hosted agents, every job is dispatched to a newly provisioned virtual machine (based on the image generated from azure-pipelines-image-generation repository templates). These virtual machines are cleaned up after the job reaches completion, not persisted and thus not reusable for subsequent jobs. The ephemeral nature of virtual machines prevents the reuse of cached Docker layers.</p>
<p>However, Docker layer caching is possible using self-hosted agents as the ephemeral lifespan problem is not applicable for these agents.</p>
<h3>How to build Linux container images for architectures other than x64?</h3>
<p>When you use Microsoft-hosted Linux agents, you create Linux container images for the x64 architecture. To create images for other architectures (for example, x86, ARM, and so on), you can use a machine emulator such as QEMU. The following steps illustrate how to create an ARM container image:</p>
<p><ol>
<li>Author your Dockerfile so that an Intel binary of QEMU exists in the base image. For example, the raspbian image already has this.</li>

<h2>PowerShell for DevOps Automation</h2>
<p>Automating build and deployment processes is a central pillar of DevOps. When multiple builds are being deployed from Dev to Test to Production everyday it?s vital to automate as much as possible. This can be achieved by using scripts to create workflows that link together the tools used for development, provisioning, and configuration management with the infrastructure platforms. In environments based on the Microsoft platform the PowerShell automation and scripting platform is the Microsoft recommended solution. This includes a powerful command line scripting language that is built on top of the full .NET framework. PowerShell has full access to .NET objects and also to the Window Server management interfaces. It can be used to fully manage the Microsoft platform for Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, Systems Centre and more, plus any Azure or Office 365 components in the Cloud. In September 2015 the latest PowerShell version 3 was released for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2, allowing these operating systems to be managed via PowerShell alongside the current Windows Server 2012 products.</p>
<p>PowerShell has been so successful and useful as a management scripting tool on the Microsoft platform that many other non Microsoft toolsets have added support for it. The main DevOps toolsets all support it, namely:</p>
<p>Here at Kemp Technologies we have also seen the value of PowerShell and have developed a pool of PowerShell cmdlets within our PowerShell for Kemp LoadMaster module. Using this allows LoadMaster provisioning to be part of an automated DevOps deployment workflow.</p>
<p>PowerShell has also been adopted by VMware as the scripting language for their PowerCLI management product. PowerCLI allows the VMware product suite to be managed with PowerShell scripts. Thus making the provision of vSphere and vCloud Air hosted servers possible from PowerShell based automation workflows.</p>

<p>@mr-sam I was able to reproduce this issue in my Azure DevOps account. I'm looking into what the issue may be. I was able to successfully authenticate by generating a personal access token, which can be done from Security > Personal Access Tokens under your Azure DevOps account.</p>

<p>Microsoft recommends using personal access tokens instead of basic authentication. I've tested that flow out a few times with my Azure DevOps account and confirmed it works without issue, so I'll work on getting a PR out to update our existing documentation about this.</p>

<h1>Azure DevOps: Update release variables across stages</h1>
<p>In Azure DevOps I needed to determine a variable in one deployment stage, and use it in another. I remember finding and implementing this solution before but couldn?t figure out how I did things, so this post is for me to find it easier next time ??.</p>
<p>For example, in a stage I want to set a variable with the name ReleaseVariableName to a value. Searching online points you to an example on how to do this with for example the PowerShell command below. You first create a variable in the variable tab and then set/overwrite its value:</p>
<h4>Note that you don?t necessarily need to create variable, Azure DevOps does that for you. But it helps in figuring out what is happening later on.</h4>

<h2>The issue</h2>
<p>Testing the code above will prove that this works, but that the variable values are reset in a new Agent Job or another Stage. This stems from the fact that each job or stage can be run on a different Agent (and even in parallel) and that the values are not synced across.</p>
<h1>The fix: use the REST API for Azure DevOps</h1>
<p>The only way I found to update the variable value is to use the REST API for Azure DevOps, find the current release we?re in and then overwrite the variable value there. Then the next Stage / Job will pick up the new value and you can continue.</p>
<h5>Do note that this updated value will not be available with this in the <em>same stage</em> as you?re updating it in! Handle that separately.</h5>
<p><em>Note</em>: you will need to set the Job you are running this in to have access to the OAuth Access Token:</p>

<p>Good to note that you need Manage Releases with the service you are running the deployment pipeline with, otherwise you will run into an error like this:</p>

<p>There is a new update for Azure DevOps on its way to make this even easier as noted by the Azure DevOps team here. You can see that the initial issues was created in 2017 and the solution is rolling out in 2020 ??.</p>
<h1>Update for yaml pipelines</h1>
<p>After reading this blog post, Sebastian Sch?tze new about another way to fix this issue in a yaml pipeline: you have the option there to upload an artefact from the pipeline that can be downloaded in any subsequent stage/job.</p>

<h1>Continuous integration vs. continuous delivery vs. continuous deployment</h1>
<p>We will see in this article what these three practices mean and what's required to use them.</p>
<p>CI and CD are two acronyms frequently used in modern development practices and DevOps. CI stands for continuous integration, a fundamental DevOps best practice where developers frequently merge code changes into a central repository where automated builds and tests run. But CD can either mean continuous delivery or continuous deployment.</p>
<h2>What are the differences between CI, CD, and CD?</h2>
<h3>Continuous integration</h3>
<p>Developers practicing continuous integration merge their changes back to the main branch as often as possible. The developer's changes are validated by creating a build and running automated tests against the build. By doing so, you avoid integration challenges that can happen when waiting for release day to merge changes into the release branch.</p>
<p>Continuous integration puts a great emphasis on testing automation to check that the application is not broken whenever new commits are integrated into the main branch.</p>
<h3>Continuous delivery</h3>
<p>Continuous delivery is an extension of continuous integration since it automatically deploys all code changes to a testing and/or production environment after the build stage.</p>
<p>This means that on top of automated testing, you have an automated release process and you can deploy your application any time by clicking a button.</p>
<p>In theory, with continuous delivery, you can decide to release daily, weekly, fortnightly, or whatever suits your business requirements. However, if you truly want to get the benefits of continuous delivery, you should deploy to production as early as possible to make sure that you release small batches that are easy to troubleshoot in case of a problem.</p>
<h3>Continuous deployment</h3>
<p>Continuous deployment goes one step further than continuous delivery. With this practice, every change that passes all stages of your production pipeline is released to your customers. There's no human intervention, and only a failed test will prevent a new change to be deployed to production.</p>
<p>Continuous deployment is an excellent way to accelerate the feedback loop with your customers and take pressure off the team as there isn't a <em>Release Day</em> anymore. Developers can focus on building software, and they see their work go live minutes after they've finished working on it.</p>
<h3>How the practices relate to each other</h3>
<p>To put it simply continuous integration is part of both continuous delivery and continuous deployment. And continuous deployment is like continuous delivery, except that releases happen automatically.</p>
