Continuous development approach - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Continuous development approach

[youtube]

Continuous development approach Top news headlines Continuous development approach

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Continuing professional development, or CPD, is the ongoing process of developing, maintaining and documenting your professional skills.

These skills may be gained formally, through courses or training, or informally, on the job or by watching others.

Some professions use the term 'continuing professional development' formally, and require a certain amount of development activity to be carried out and documented each year as a condition of maintaining your membership of, or registration with, a professional body, or a licence to operate in that field.

In other areas, CPD is used more informally. A commitment to learning and improving is, however, generally expected of anyone in a professional capacity.

What is a profession?

A profession, broadly speaking, is a career area for which you need a professional qualification. Traditionally, the professions included law, medicine (including dentistry and other allied professions), accountancy, the civil service and similar. More recently, many other professions have emerged, including HR, marketing, sales and IT, all of which have recognised professional qualifications.

Professional qualifications are a requirement to operate in some professions, such as medicine or dentistry. While it is not absolutely required to hold an HR qualification to work in HR, for example, anyone wishing to make a career in that area is strongly encouraged to obtain qualifications to demonstrate their commitment.

The Continuing Professional Development Cycle

The process of CPD is designed to help you identify and act on your own development needs.

The Continuous Professional Development Cycle (see figure) shows that professional development is, like much other learning, best thought of as a circular series of activities. The process moves from identifying your development needs through planning and then carrying out your learning activities, to reflecting on your learning, and then applying it and sharing it with others.

Perhaps the most important thing about CPD is that it is personal.

Each individual is expected to identify their own needs, organise their own training, and learn for themselves. Part of being a professional is taking responsibility for your own skills and recognising when they need to improve.

1. Identifying Your Needs

There are a number of ways in which you can identify development needs.

For example, you can carry out a skills audit. You may receive feedback from colleagues or your line manager about an area in which you are weaker. Alternatively, you may have an interest in a particular area and want to develop your knowledge.

Once you have identified your key areas for development, you then need to plan your activities.

2. Planning and Carrying Out Development Activities

Development activities may be either:

Formal, such as training courses or particular qualifications. These are often, though not always, provided by an external provider, and may carry a cost. Your employer may have a limit on what they are prepared to pay, so you may need to consider self-funding or alternatives such as online resources that are cheaper or even free.

Informal learning, including side-by-side learning, video training (for example, for doctors in particular surgical techniques), shadowing, mentoring, coaching or reading on the subject.

There is a growing recognition that continuing professional development is both essential and potentially expensive. Especially in developing countries, professionals are using the internet to share teaching content for free, or at very low cost. You may find that an imaginative approach to seeking out development activities pays off.

3. Reflecting on Your Learning

Reflecting on what you have learned is a vital part of continuing professional development. Learning does not emerge only from activities that you designated as ?development?, and you may find that you are learning at least as much from your day-to-day activities.

It is a good idea to keep a ?learning log? or diary. Make a habit of writing in it at least once a week, if not each day (if you leave it any longer, you probably won?t remember). For each event or activity that you find useful, make a note of:

The situation;

What you learned;

What you will do differently as a result.

This diary can be used to assess your progress against your development goals.

For any formal or informal but designated development activity, you should record the activity, what you found useful or not useful about it, and what you have learned. In each case, make sure that you are clear about how it will change what you do in future (how you apply your learning).

You may find our page on Reflective Practice helpful in developing good habits in this area.

4. Applying Your Learning

Going on training courses or watching videos is only the start. You then have to apply what you have learned to your own job. This can be quite a clumsy process, especially at first. The competence theory of learning sets out that we move through four stages when we learn:

Unconscious incompetence РІ?? not knowing what we don?t know;

Conscious incompetence РІ?? knowing where we need to develop and watching other people do it, but still unable to do it ourselves with any skill;

Conscious competence РІ?? being able to do something reasonably well, provided we concentrate; and

Unconscious competence РІ?? being able to do something almost instinctively, without needing to focus on it.

There is more about this cycle in our page on Coaching.

When you have done some training or other development activity, you will probably be somewhere between conscious incompetence and conscious competence, depending on how much you have been able to practise.

You therefore need to spend time applying your learning and practising to move to a stage of unconscious competence.

5. Sharing Your Learning with Others

Some commentators add a fifth stage to the competence cycle РІ?? being able to teach others. It is certainly true that being able to articulate and share your learning is an important part of making sure that you have fully internalised it.

It is a good idea to get into the habit of discussing your learning with your colleagues on a regular basis. Sharing each other's learning can be a really good development tool, and can help you identify new areas for development, or ideas for other development activities, as well as helping to refine what you have learnt in your mind.

Recording Your Development

An important part of continuing professional development is being able to demonstrate it, especially if your membership of a professional body depends on it.

You should therefore keep a folder or portfolio of all your development activities, drawing on your learning diary. The aim of this is to be able to show how your skills and knowledge have developed over a period.

You should therefore:

Keep a note of your development needs and goals, and make a regular (quarterly, six-monthly or annual) assessment of your progress against them;

Record any training courses attended, with a copy of any certificates or qualifications obtained. Keep a record of the date, provider, aims of the training, and your thoughts on what you learned from it;

Make a note of any shadowing, video-assisted training or similar. In each case, record the provider, the aims, and your thoughts about what you learned;

For any coaching or mentoring sessions, make a note of the date, the person you were with, what you discussed, and what you intend to do differently as a result;

For any reading and other informal development that you do, make a note of the book or website, and what you have learned and will do differently as a result;

If you are involved in any critical incidents, or make particular mistakes from which you learn, record the details of the incident, what you learned, and what you will do differently as a result.

And finallyРІ??

Continuing professional development is an ongoing process, as well as a cycle. You are likely to continue to learn throughout your professional life.

It is therefore a good idea to develop a process for it that works for you at an early stage of your career.

Azure pipelines kubernetes - Kabrinskiy Eduard

Deploy Pull Requests to Kubernetes for Review with Azure DevOps

When a Pull Request got created, you might want to try out the changes in a testing environment. Here is how to optionally deploy Azure DevOps Pull Requests to a dedicated Kubernetes namespace with a single click.

What we need

To achieve automatic deployments of Pull Requests in Azure DevOps, we need a few things beside the obvious ones like a Kubernetes Cluster and your application as a Container with a Helm Chart or deployment definition.

Azure DevOps Service Connections for Azure, Kubernetes and a Container Registry (taken as given)

Azure Pipeline to build the app and deploy it

An optional Build Trigger to kick off the pipeline

Create an Azure Pipeline for Build and Deploy

We will setup Azure DevOps, to offer running an additional Build Validation Branch Policy whenever a Pull Request to a specific branch got opened. These build validations come as Azure Pipelines.

Once the pipeline definition is written, we can create a new Azure Pipeline from it by checking the deploy-pr.azure-pipelines.yaml file in to our repository and creating a new Azure Pipeline in Azure DevOps by selecting an existing YAML file.

Create a new Pipeline in Azure DevOps from an existing YAML file

Now that the pipeline is created, we can add it to the optional steps that can be kicked off from a Pull Request check.

Add the pipeline as a Pull Request Check

In the Branches section of the Repos submenu in Azure DevOps, we can add Policies to each branch by clicking the menu icon next to a branch and selecting the Branch policies option.

Here we can setup requirements for Pull Request that are being made against the selected branch. Beside policies for reviewers and status checks, we can also setup Build Validations, which are Azure Pipelines that run to validate the changes. Some of them can be required and run automatically, while others can be optional and only run on a user's request. The latter is exactly what we need.

Add a Build Validation policy for the Pull Request Pipeline we created earlier and declare its trigger to manual and its requirement to optional.

Create a new optional and manual Build Validation policy for the Azure Pipeline that builds and deploys the Pull Request

Now, if someone creates a new Pull Request targeting the branch you just setup the new policy for, the reviewer can chose to deploy the changes to a dedicated Kubernetes namespace for detailed review, just by kicking off the newly created pipeline.

Running the pipeline that builds and deploys the changes is a bit hidden. In the Pull Request view, click the View all checks button to see a list of all Build Validation pipelines that can be run for this Pull Request. Here you will find the optional one, that we just created. Once you click the Queue button, your pipeline will be executed.

Deploy a Pull Request by queueing the optional pipeline hidden in the Checks

Optional: Post a link to the app to the Pull Request comments

Personally, I like not just silently deploying a Pull Request but also posing an internal link for reviewing automatically to the Pull Request's comments. I use the Create Pull Request Comment Task from the Azure DevOps Marketplace for that but of course you need to make sure, that your Helm Chart is built in a way, that it creates a route in your Ingress Controller for the newly deployed testing version of your app.

Gotchas

One thing that bothers me about that solution is the fact that I have to delete the deployment manually after merging the Pull Request. Currently, there is no Trigger in Azure DevOps to run a pipeline after merging. Fingers crossed, that Azure DevOps brings a native "Deploy Pull Requests to Kubernetes" feature one day, which includes that.

?? Advertisement Block: I will buy myself a pizza every time I make enough money with these ads to do so. So please feed a hungry developer and consider disabling your Ad Blocker.

Sonarqube azure devops - Эдуард Кабринский

Sonarqube azure devops

[youtube]

Sonarqube azure devops Newspaper headlines today Sonarqube azure devops

Use pull request decoration in Azure DevOps with SonarCloud

Some time ago I wrote about how to fail your Azure Pipeline, if your SonarQube quality gate fails. I often get the request how you can do the same thing with SonarCloud. But it?s much better to use pull request decoration. This is really an awesome feature. You get the SonarQube Errors directly in the pull request and the quality gate is evaluated.

The configuration is a bit tricky and the options are pretty hard to find. And this only works in SonarCloud or with the SonarQube Developer Edition! I switched completely to SonarCloud ? this is much more convenient.

I asume that you already have a build with the prepare, run and publish tasks configured. Note that there is a different extension for SonarCloud then for SonarQube. Add and configure the tasks accordingly and run the build with the analysis.

Now got to the project in SonarCloud. Go to ?Generell Settings?, ?Pull Requests?. Select VSTS and enter a Personal Access Token for Azure DevOps that SonarCloud uses to connect to Azure DevOps.

Now run the build again. If the analysis is complete got the the branch policy in your Azure Repo. If you now add a new Status Policy you will find in the drop down a policy called ?SonarCloud/quality gate?. Select it and save the policy.

That?s it! Now create a pull request and enjoy the SonarCloud decoration. The Status Policy will fail the PR if the SonarCloud Quality Gate fails.

Out with the old, in with the new! With the rename of Visual Studio Team Services Build and Release Management to Azure DevOps Pipelines all of the underlying libraries are being renamed too.

In order to stay up to date and receive the latest updates you'll need to make a few small changes to your existing build tasks:

Update your vss-extension.json

The categories in the Marketplace have changed to reflect the new names of the Hubs in Azure DevOps.Your tasks must be updated to reflect this change:

Change the category of your extension in your extension manifest from it's old name to the new names: Azure Repos , Azure Boards , Azure Pipelines , Azure Test Plans , and Azure Artifacts .

Remove your dependency on vsts-task-lib

The vsts-task-lib has been renamed to azure-pipelines-task-lib and you'll need to update your package.json to pickup this new library:

Or manually update your package.json :

Update your typescript files to import the new library

And now that you have a new module you depend on, you'll need to import it in your typescript files:

After changing your import / require statements, all the existing functions should remain operational, unless you're upgrading from a very old version of the vsts-task-lib .

Update to the latest version of tfx-cli

If you're using the old version of tfx-cli it will balk at the new extension categories. The easiest way to fix that is to update to the latest version of tfx-cli , but if you're stuck on an older version for whatever reason, suppress local validation to get your extension published:

And if you're using the Azure DevOps Tasks for Extensions you'll have to make sure you're on 1.2.8 or you'll have to enable this feature:

Use Bypass local validation if you're on an older version of the Azure DevOps Extension Tasks.

I've just upgraded my first task, the Snyk Task, and you can see all the changes here. I've done a bit of refactoring in this release as well and the old name has mostly been eradicated. The only thing I'll be stuck with is the Extension ID, all of my extensions have vsts in their ID and there is no way to get rid of that without breaking all my users.

Azure task - Eduard Kabrinskiy

Azure task

[youtube]

Azure task Headline news Azure task

Create Azure DevOps Task using Powershell

Azure DevOps(ADO) is a Microsoft product that provides version control, reporting, requirements management, project management, automated builds, lab management, testing and release management capabilities. It covers the entire application life-cycle, and enables DevOps capabilities.

Today I am going to share a script block to create ADO Work Item, specially Task using Powershell. My initial goal was to create Azure DevOps Tasks based on certain feeds from our ITSM system. While ITSM system is our main system to manage and document all activities, Development and Engineering teams use Azure DevOps to manage and track all their activities using Work Items in Azure DevOps(ADO). So, we need to create an automation to create a record in ADO corresponding to the ITSM Ticket.

There are several ways to setup this automation. You can use Connectors, Azure Logic App etc.

Here, I am going to create an ADO Task from an Incident Ticket created in the ITSM system. Check my previous blog on how to create ServiceNow Incident using Powershell. So, I am here not going to explain how to get Incident details from ITSM system.

For now, let?s consider following fields to be documented or added in the ADO task we will create.

Incident Number

Incident identifier, example INC123456

Requester

Requester id or name who entered/requested the incident

Short Description

Short description of the issue/incident

Description

Detailed description of the issue/incident

Category

Category of the incident,example, Infrastructure

Sub-Category

Sub-Category of the incident for the given category,example, Windows Server

Impact

Impact or priority of the issue/incident. It could be any number between 1 and 4. Where 1 being highest priority; 4 being lowest

You may have different field requirements.Feel free to update based on your requirements.

Here is the mapping between Incident field data and what we will populate in the ADO Task.

Title

Incident Number & Short Description

Comment

Incident Number, Requester, Category, Sub-Category, Description

Priority

Impact

Tag

Category,Sub-Category

Before we start, as prerequisite, we need a Personal Access Token(PAT) with correct set of permissions to authenticate and authorize on the ADO API. You may use SSH Key or an alternate method to generate credentials.

To generate a PAT, click on the user icon on the right-side top corner of the ADO website as shown in the picture and click on the ellipse and then click on ?User settings? :

Now, within User settings, select Personal Access Tokens from the list as shown in the screenshot :

In the next screen, click on New Token to generate a new Token. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the PAT creation process. Make sure to copy the PAT in safe place as you will not be able to retrieve it once the window is closed. For permission, make sure, you select all required permissions you need to perform the task.

Finally, we are now ready to start writing the script. Let?s define the ADO Task REST API URL and also generate the Authorization Header using the PAT generated in previous step. The ADO API URL uses your ADO Organization name and the Project name as part to construct the URL path.

Now, let?s create the main script block to create ADO Task. I am assuming you already collected all required ITSM Incident information to use while updating Task details.

Once the script runs successfully, you will receive response like below :

Now, check in Azure DevOps. You should see a Task has been created in the Project name you provided :

Microsoft provides a list of documentations on different REST API actions you can perform on Azure DevOps:

Make sure you have selected the correct version of the API.
